some may be lost through enemy action that can't be helped but we must recognize another loss hazard one which can be controlled it is the action of so-called friendly hands helping themselves to relatively small amounts of equipment and supplies these hands have gone over to the enemy reducing our vital stores of materiel just as ruthlessly as our enemy would where security measures are lacks or inadequate the security officer of an installation may count on receiving a steady stream of pilferage reports any system for the prevention of pilferage depends primarily upon the efficiency and discipline of the personnel assigned to carry out the general security plan there are three fundamental principles in every security setup first attitude a man guarding government property is in a position of special responsibility his attitude toward the trust placed in him must be right second control of persons entering or leaving an installation must be constant third use all the security devices available they are provided to discourage and to detect pilfering the strict enforcement of all security regulations acts as a damper to temptation the badge of a familiar person may be rescinded without the guard's knowledge therefore where the pass is a badge it must always be visible a badge tells you at a glance that the wearer is authorized to be in the installation badges and other types of passes are issued by the provo marshal a permanent pass will generally carry a photograph of the bearer a record of all passes issued is on file in the provo marshal's office security personnel should be familiar with every type of pass issued including those given to visitors and persons authorized to enter restricted areas all visitors must state their business before they are admitted to an installation upon presenting satisfactory proofs that they are authorized to enter they are registered and issued a temporary pass the register will be a record of each visitor's signature personal address or business address purpose of visit time of entrance and later time of departure the return of every temporary pass is an extremely vital requirement in the prevention of pilferage permit no visitor to leave without returning his or her past another basic measure against pilferage is the examination of all packages brought into or taken out of the installation store wrapped parcels lunch pails and similar items must not be overlooked examine everything a check room established at the entrance to the installation eliminates the frequent annoyances and delays involved in the inspection of packages when an unannounced spot check is ordered do the job thoroughly but not offensively this is an excellent means of catching the more clever pilfers off their guard no single security measure can cover all the dodges that a sharp pilferer can dream up the main gate of this post has a special gadget called an inspector scope in a second it shows any metal object that might be inside a package placed on the ledge the package is examined by the concealed machine and its operator when a questionable item is revealed a signal notifies the military policeman on duty who detains the suspect until he can be taken away for questioning traffic control while designed for overall security is another definite barrier against pilferage military policemen in their booths should be able easily to observe the approach of both incoming and outgoing vehicles pedestrians must be required to pass through entrances and exits provided for them separating the flow of pedestrians from the vehicular traffic simplifies the inspection of passes and packages for the best control of vehicular traffic at all times maintain a single line at the checkpoint but don't imagine that these or any other checking methods by themselves will automatically wipe out all pilferage and don't expect the fence alone to keep trespassers out or pilfered articles in when patrolling the perimeter of an installation do not permit any loiterers near the fence many a package containing valuable government property has been tossed over offense to a confederate or to be picked up later check the more vulnerable points each time around an observation tower takes care of potential weak spots in the perimeter fence the additional height allows the guard to clearly observe multiple activity or to keep an eye on unusual terrain features when any gate is not in use make sure that it is locked securely locked steel cribs and locked chests afford the maximum security against pilferage but they must nevertheless be guarded a communication system is an essential part of every good security plan it's there to be used roving patrols are most effective when radios keep them in contact with their headquarters alarm systems are of two kinds the silent alarm this is only a demonstration has an obvious advantage over the bell alarm with this system the thief or trespasser has no way of knowing he has been detected here is another technique which can sometimes be used to establish the guilt of a pilfer this powder invisible to the eye is easily seen under an ultraviolet ray a pilfer with this on his hands has no alibi in a well-organized storage area the storage arrangement will be such as to afford the guard long wide lanes of observation where this principle has been disregarded guards should notify their immediate superior light should be so placed that guards can observe without being seen above all a good system requires aggressive and alert guards men who like to catch criminals a guard who knows his job and realizes his responsibility plays the most important part in the prevention of pilferage study this case this warehouse contains precision equipment tempting and small enough to be easily filtered because this is critical equipment the security program has been adjusted to existing circumstances an extra guard patrols the sensitive area at all times an experienced guard conducts himself in a business-like manner and because he knows his business he continually varies his route and time schedule if trouble comes his way he's ready anyone may be a pilfer this type is known as the casual pilferer he is yielding to a more or less sudden temptation later he'll find out what he's stolen how valuable the article is and what he can do with it if anything he gets a kick out of putting one over on the guards [Music] an alert guard is more than a match for a pilfer notice that he acts quickly and firmly observed that the pilferer has become remorseful he usually does offering a wide variety of excuses for his unusual act never be influenced by the statements of a pilfer stick to business call for help and keep your prisoner covered assistance arrives quickly when the security system is sound the corporal of the guard clearly informs the suspect that he is apprehended and under custody before searching him for concealed weapons and evidence of his crime because of the very nature of the act the pilferer generally conceals the stolen article on his person it is not part of a guard's duty to thoroughly investigate a pilfering incident that's up to specially trained military police investigators but it is a guard's duty to protect evidence that may be used later in the formal investigation and prosecution of the case in this case to protect the evidence the guard stations himself near the box that was broken into and stays there until relieved then working with the non-commissioned officer he completes the job by writing out a clear and accurate report of exactly what happened the report is forwarded to the security officer first then next to the provo marshal and finally to the commander of the installation he reads every report because he is responsible for the overall security of the installation the commander will have special orders issued through the provo marshal whenever unusual conditions arise the security guard commander passes along the special orders together with all other security orders of the post commander a typical example of a special order is one which directs the attention of guards to sensitive locations such orders are posted and also given verbally to the men who will carry them out keep your eyes and ears open for anything unusual and report it immediately now the special orders for post six that includes warehouses four five and six have been posted i'm going to read them to you just be sure that they're understood one this post includes the area of the parade ground warehouses four five and six and the area between a and c avenue two check all locks and windows on this post twice during the period of duty three report once an hour from this post using the field telephone you know your general orders your all-experienced guards do a good job that's all details change after instructions are issued non-commissioned officers take over as supervisors they are responsible for the performance of the guards under them non-commissioned officers attend to the posting of the relief and inspect the guard at frequent intervals as part of their administrative duties the non-commissioned officers take care of reports and prepare special instructions here's a short story about casual pilferers who happened to get away with it once so they decided to try their hand at systematic filtering because it's night one of the more experienced military policemen is on duty at the main gate even though this truck driver is a frequent visitor he doesn't enter until his identification and pass are checked [Music] so far there is nothing unusual late visitors on this post however are unusual any act or happening which is unusual calls for prompt attention it may be just a pleasant distraction or it may mean trouble [Music] what's the trouble miss something real often happens me and my girlfriend can't get into a house well what do you mean well there's a man hanging around her corner we're afraid to go down the street you think you could come with us for a minute i'll be glad to help you when i'm through with my tour of duty but it's urgent this man is hanging around shall i call for some help no never mind you're not my cues you mps despite his courtesy the military policeman is suspicious this interruption off the routine calls for caution what's this all about within the installation one of the guards is patrolling his post trying doors checking windows interested in everything within his sight or hearing [Music] as the familiar truck approaches the guard gives it only a casual look nothing unusual about this truck unless it were to stop where it shouldn't uh oh that's it what did is that all you got oh did we get this much just once a week we'd be doing all okay let's get going mp's looking at a shot tonight they don't have to cover yourself meanwhile losing no time the guard calls the corporal of the guard who alerts the main gate main gate private hurst speed okay will do [Music] wait a minute hold up the conspiracy to commit systematic filtering fails any outbreak of pilferage in these critical times must be regarded as a very grave danger both to our armed forces and to our national security [Music] the security measures shown apply to all situations whether overseas or in this country when the facilities required are not available they must be improvised pilfering can be prevented but it demands an energetic security force carefully organized there must be teamwork common sense initiative know-how judgment that anticipates the dodges of the pilfer consistently and it must always be born in mind that a basic mission of any security force is to prevent pilferage to make it just too tough for the would-be pilferer to get started hello everybody welcome um i'm skip alzheimer we just saw two films uh because the depots and warehouse film ended quicker than i thought so i figured i would show the elizabeth city potato festival 1951 wonderful parade um on saturday at one o'clock eastern standard time we'll be doing what we call home movie day normally we do this in person at a library or archive or gallery space and it's usually in mid october but given kovid um and given my um loving to a challenge we're doing it virtually um and you can check us out on youtube facebook or twitch or wherever you're checking us out and what we did is we had people bring by uh drop off their uh home movies and home videos and we've been digitizing them and we're going to put together a little show and a little presentation and people will be able we'll be there to answer questions there will be a movie day bingo it's really a lot of fun um we've been doing a home movie day for 18 years uh and i've already done two home movie days this year before covet kicked in i did one in new york city and then did one in in durham north carolina and normally we do it like i said around october and that's where most other folks are doing it and we'll probably be doing it virtually a lot of them will be internationally um and so this is kind of part of that deal of like i love taking these films that are kind of locked away in people's closets and under their beds and bringing them out and kind of showing them because they show a little bit of our culture um but so we saw potato festival footage uh before that we saw depots and warehouses i don't think that's the complete title but it got clipped but it's obviously about pilfering um and the friendly hands that pilfered so it's pretty awesome uh yeah alright this next film is another military film it talks about the b1b um which was a big deal um back in the 80s so here it is b1b in the late 1950s strategic thinking ran to high altitude airplanes for survival we designed our airplanes that way the b-52 was designed to operate up to 50 000 feet for reconnaissance there was the u2 there was in development the xb70 with its 2000 mile per hour speed and a ceiling of over 70 000 feet invincible we thought then came the gary power shoot down in 1960 and the u2 brought down over cuba during the missile crisis of 1962 high altitude penetration was no longer the way to go we therefore modified the b-52s with new avionics and developed low-level tactics and at the same time we launched a high-priority study labeled advanced manned strategic aircraft this study concluded that to defeat the soviet radar and surface-to-air missile threats our bombers would have to fly fast and at extremely low altitudes out of this study in the late 60s came the b1 or more precisely the b1a which first flew in late 1974 [Music] while the procurement of the b1a and its introduction into the strategic force was cancelled in 1977 four of these airplanes were built and a flight test program continued this advanced strategic system has achieved an outstanding flight test record of nearly 2 000 hours demonstrating the systems and concepts which comprise its superior capabilities in 1982 when the b1 program was regenerated by the president and the congress it inherited an extensive amount of test data which provided the technical impetus for the development of the b1b [Music] the b1b with all its improvements is scheduled to be in full force of 100 aircraft by 1988. in view of our strategic missiles and submarine capabilities why do we need a manned bomber and why the b-1b our nation's posture of deterrence has long relied on what we call the triad of strategic weapons the intercontinental ballistic missiles one thousand of them in hardened shelters provide an adversary with an enormous problem to neutralize our submarine force securely hidden under the sea provides sea launched ballistic missiles which further complicate the enemy's defensive problem the manned bomber which can employ a variety of tactics under positive control offers the most flexible of the three elements of the triad together these forces dilute the soviet's defensive efforts they cannot concentrate their resources on one or two predictable systems but must always consider the third and less predictable system the manned bomber is highly versatile it flies daily it can be seen by citizens of this country who are reassured by its presence it can be seen by potential adversaries when used as a diplomatic tool to demonstrate national resolve this is plattsburgh air force base in new york the airplane is the medium range fb111 periodically the strategic air command exercises its forces to train its crews of course but also to give visibility to our strategic forces bombers can be dispersed to satellite bases and postured as a very visible increase in national readiness in times of crisis and most effectively the manned bomber can be launched under positive control airborne on the way to a target but recallable at the last minute through an elaborate command and control system what you've seen done here by the fb 111 can be done in spades by the b1 [Applause] designed for fast alert response the time from claxenhorn to being airborne is a very few minutes the first crew member to the aircraft starts the auxiliary power units systems are powered up by the time the four-man crew is at its stations fewer ground support personnel are required to get the system launched it's reactive [Music] the b1a has provided answers to a lot of questions in its flight tests it has flown new offensive and defensive avionics systems [Music] design features are being incorporated which will improve its prime asset penetrability [Music] a variety of electronic countermeasures will make it possible to defeat the enemy's efforts to acquire and track this airplane [Music] other systems are designed to defeat other threats such as infrared seekers its low-level high-speed performance provides great problems for an enemy's defenses it is a capable penetrator [Music] phased array radar technology is used in both its defensive electronic countermeasures and its combined attack and terrain following radar systems much of the technology has derived from the highly successful f-16 phased array radar system the alq-161 defensive avionics system was originally designed for the b1a the protracted flight test program has resulted in improvements which make it much more effective than anticipated in the early stages of development its reprogrammable design will permit quick adaptation to changing threats one of the most significant improvements from the b1a to the b1b will be its improved capability to penetrate soviet defenses the great reduction of the radar cross section of the airplane by using radar absorbing materials and reducing reflective surfaces particularly the engine inlet area coupled with additional physical and electronic changes in the radar signature of the b1b the airplane is much more difficult to detect on radar the b1b radar image is 10 times smaller than that of the b1a which was already much smaller than the b52 graphically it looks like this the b52 signature the b1b add to this cross-section the terrain masking provided by the low-level flight system traveling fast just under the speed of sound and you can see why the b-1b is called a penetrator what can the b1 deliver in the way of munitions here is another area of superiority its maximum gross weight will be 477 thousand pounds 125 000 of that will be deliverable payload 75 000 pounds in its weapons bays and an additional 50 000 pounds on external hardpoints under the fuselage [Music] the three weapons bays can accommodate eight gravity nuclear bombs each or three rotary launchers for the short-range attack missile sram the bulkhead between the forward weapons bays can be moved to accommodate the longer air-launched cruise missile eight of them on a rotary launcher the b-1b will carry external stores in fact alcans can be carried on fuselage hard points with the aft weapons bays still available for gravity bombs or sram [Music] what a challenge to an enemy's area and terminal defenses extensive testing on the b1a airframe has provided confidence in the accuracy and dependability of the offensive avionics and the separation qualities of the ordnance plan we learned to give flexibility to our strategic bombers when we use the b-52 as a conventional bomber in vietnam with effective results the b-1b can carry clips of 28 mark 82 500-pound bombs in each of its three weapons bays that's a total of 84 weapons internally how jimmy doolittle could have used the b-1 when he planned his 30 seconds over tokyo it took a carrier task force supporting 16 b-25s with 80 crew members to carry some 64 500 pound bombs that's 20 fewer bombs than the internal load of one b-1b [Music] with all its technology the b-1b is not an inexpensive plane to build however one b-1b with a crew of four could have departed the continental united states dropped its 84 bombs and been back in the states non-stop for supper we've come a long way in less than half a century the b-1b has a global range with aerial refueling coupled with its accurate navigation system and large weapons loads the b1b is suited to the maritime support mission such as reconnaissance of strategic shipping lanes and the air laying of mines this versatile and long-range airplane is on the front burner now with component testing on the available b1a airframes the air force has compressed the time needed to achieve operational capability the new assembly plant at palmdale california will achieve a schedule of one airplane per week when it reaches peak production this will permit the first sac unit to obtain initial operational capability in late 1986 all 100 planes are to be in the inventory by 1988 [Music] the air force acting as the prime contractor in the development of the b1b coordinates the contribution of four associate contractors rockwell for airframe and final assembly general electric for engines boeing for offensive avionics and ail a division of eaton for defensive systems there are also some 5 200 subcontractors and suppliers in 48 states contributing to the effort in all some 60 000 jobs are directly related to the [Music] b-1b this is the b-1b not exceptionally different in appearance from what we've seen already in this film note the engine intake the most obvious of all the variances one which permits the great reduction in the airplane's radar cross section there are windows in the rear crew area one on each side it has individual ejection seats rather than the crew capsule system of the b1a this is truly an advanced manned strategic aircraft that embodies the product of years of test and development it is a long-range strategic nuclear delivery aircraft with tremendous penetration capability also it is designed to handle conventional operations in support of theater commanders rapidly and with great survivability with sophisticated navigational systems and long range and endurance the plane is able to fill the maritime support role but most important is its visibility as a tool of national policy and resolve to show the colors and to convince friend and foe alike that this nation is ready and equipped to fulfill its obligation to defend freedom anywhere on this globe [Music] um so that is a promotional film for the b-1b um which was a very expensive plane and so i'm sure that the air force commissioned this to show it to uh senators and people that were approving budgets saying that you know this is why we need this aircraft it's worth it um so it's an interesting army i mean i'm sorry it's air force it was made by this company called goal productions i i have several gold productions films that um some of them are military related and some of them are just weird promotional films the tire rigging demo came from that badge from the gold productions badge so maybe they had a uh tire rigging that they use for some military stuff but there's more of those to come i will show some of those there's some pretty great ones um that i found over the years um yeah so speaking of aeronautics uh and promotion for budget uh nasa would do that with their aeronautics and space report and uh they would do it monthly or quarterly or um yearly depending on what was going on and depending on what they were trying to get uh budgeting for and this one is from 1965 uh and i still think that they're doing them they're basically these little video news releases that they often release uh to the press and the press will then sometimes take the blip and talk about it uh and you know nasa is not just about space it's a lot about aeronautics and about um airplane technology which is super important so here it is 1965. from kitty hawk to cape kennedy nasa the national aeronautics and space administration presents aeronautics and space report this is astronaut edward white as he stepped from the gemini iv craft into space he and james mcdivitt then flew on for four days completing our longest space trip yet next gemini 5 with veteran astronaut gordon cooper assigned as command pilot cooper's 22 orbit mission ended project mercury now he will be involved in an even longer flight than mcdivits and white's gemini 5 is planned for seven days 112 orbits sharing the piloting duties will be charles pete conrad like all the mercury and germany pilots before him astronaut conrad spends much of his time in training while in orbit the two men will conduct a variety of experiments these include a checkout of computer and radar equipment to be used on the first rendezvous and docking maneuvers and from a vantage point similar to this they will take pictures of cloud cover and selected parts of the earth gemini 5 is the second long duration mission and the third in a series of manned space flights which are preparing the way for future journeys to the moon rockets satellites research planes spacecraft products of the emerging space age many of these objects are now on display at the new york world's fair and are assembled in one location the u.s space park they constitute the largest collection of space hardware outside cape kennedy there's an atlas rocket like those that boosted mercury astronauts into orbit the aurora 7 spacecraft in which scott carpenter flew three times around the world a two-man gemini spaceship and full-size titan ii booster a replica of ranger the lunar photographer and an actual scale mock-up of a portion of the giant saturn moon rocket in addition mariner tyros x-15 these and many more pieces of hardware for this country's peaceful exploration of space are on view for visitors touring the u.s space park when astronauts return from deep space missions their spacecraft will slam into the earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds to safeguard the men during this critical friction period nasa developed protective devices called heat shields shape combined with the right materials provide the best protection as the shield burns melts and charge the intense heat is diverted from the spacecraft ground-based wind tunnels and simulators gave many of the needed answers to the problem of re-entry heating but to resolve the uncertainties a flight test program was required used for the experiment was a blunt shape two feet in diameter and weighing 200 pounds called project fire it was managed by nasa's langley research center an atlas rocket boosted the fire package along a sub-orbital flight path on the downhill side of its trajectory some 187 miles up a rocket engine ignited to ram the fire package back through the earth's atmosphere its speed over 25 000 miles per hour as it burned its way toward earth instruments send information on heating intensity to ground stations ships and planes near ascension island in the south atlantic project fire confirmed that future manned craft can be designed to withstand the searing heat of re-entry after missions far out in space this has been an aeronautics and space report presented by nasa the national aeronautics and space administration yeah so a little news blip of what was going on uh was newsworthy um and you can it's pretty great you get to see i've digitized some nasa footage for different folks for nasa for um local university for myself individuals and it's it's interesting to see like you know the the different advances and how each different space center was working on something uh different projects at different times so i'm hoping we've talked about over the over the last several months the um hal smith who was a voice actor on many of the films that we have he was on verge star um there's so many others that he did voice acting before and i feel like he shows up in this this next film i could be totally wrong but my gut is there was a whole series of these made by the alfred higgins um company and he i believe he is a um i'm doing some color correction as i'm talking to you uh runs a fix-it shop and he rhymes so here we go this is the common sense game just the sound volume the film will then be ready for correct projection [Music] uh [Music] really go i don't know i'm not supposed to go up there go ahead it's not high i dare you i better not chicken no i'm not prove it [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] my word you're a toy not a bird hi mr rock damn what happened to your arm i can see you've done it hard i heard it fly my glider can you fix it your arm i would only do you harm no my glider oh tell me how you broke your plane weren't you playing safe and sane uh billy dared me to go up on the roof i had to do it to show him i wasn't shaking hmm you may have proved you were brave within your heart but he must have thought you were not too smart why because you didn't use your head no matter what he might have said you should always think and not be dense so the game to play is common sense common sense what does that mean it means thinking thinking hard before you do things that could be bad for you it means not letting somebody talk you into things you know you should not do gee that might be hard to remember oh not so just remember the simple rule use your common sense [Music] be cool not a fool be cool not a fool the best way is not to let someone talk you into doing things you know you should not do gee i don't know well you know ted clark he felt the same but he showed he could play the common sense game at the park it happened one fine day where ted went to run and play you can play here with the other boys and girls while i'm at the store but don't leave the park okay mom [Music] his mother had told ted that he must not leave the park no matter what but later his friend trish wanted him to leave to see her new goldfish [Music] but wait his friend had asked him to break a rule but if he did he'd be a fool so each time he started to go straight ahead a little voice inside him said don't let someone talk you into doing something you know isn't right use your common sense be cool not a fool [Music] at last ted said no he was no fool his friends understood he couldn't break the rule [Music] so when people try to talk you into being a fool the game to play is play it cool what if somebody tries to talk you out of doing something you know is right they do that's true did something like that happen to you it happened to my friend trash really she was at the park with ted they were going to join a kickball game a little boy was climbing to the top of the swings trish knew the little boy might get hurt so she wanted to tell the playground director ted said no it was none of their business and they had their own game to play he tried to talk her out of doing something she knew is right she started to go [Music] then changed her mind [Applause] she didn't want to make ted late for the kickboxing but she knows she should go if she did tell the playground director ted would be angry with her then she thought don't let someone talk you out of doing something you know it's right [Music] be cool not a fool so trish did what she knew was right [Music] and the little boy got saved but what could have been a bad ball that's right what a delight being cool not a fool also means not letting people talk you out of doing what you know is right i know another thing that took common sense to be cool and not a fool what's that well billy and mary were walking past an old building [Music] billy picked up some rocks he told mary to throw one at the window at first mary thought it would be fun [Applause] but she stopped because she knew it was wrong to break things that belonged to other people [Applause] that's when billy tried to talk her into throwing the rock anyway be cool not a fool don't let someone talk you into doing something you know isn't right use your common sense [Music] and you know when mary wouldn't do what she knew was wrong billy decided not to do it either and so you see and this i say common sense can be used in every way it can be used when you do what you know is right and it can be used when you're learning to do something that might give you a fight the thing to remember is think use your common sense then you'll always be cool and not a fool [Music] well i wish i had another chance where i wouldn't hurt my arm i bet i can be cool and not a fool well we can find out if i use this hourglass to turn back time to make it pass an hourglass how does it work the sand going to the bottom from the top measures time which does not stop here shake it up and maybe you'll find it will go backward for a reverse of time [Music] you did it and backward you go for a second chance in the common sense show why don't you sail it off there dave you'd really go i don't know i'm not supposed to go up there go ahead it's not high i dare ya i better not [Music] oh my god then prove it that wouldn't be very smart i'd better use my common sense i'm not going up there why aren't you not me that's it be cool and not a fool yeah let's find a safer place than this i'm so very glad you came because now you know the common sense not a fool so what i want to know is when was it important for kids to be cool like where was that point where suddenly that's something that a a kid should aspire to is that's cool i want to be cool i mean being a fool of course that's that's been around for a long time uh and you know not wanting to be one certainly something but to be cool when did that take place because this film came out in 79. um the other thing is that uh life-size frog prince in the background i hadn't noticed that before but november 14 1990 30 years ago i think uh we determined that 1992 was probably the end of making educational films on film that video had taken over by that point but it's interesting 1990s they're talking about software because that is what i consider to be the next teaching machine was you went from glass slides to film strips to motion pictures motion pictures with sound uh video dvds um then there was a little period where there were um cd-roms that were educational that were software related but then software kind of took over for a while and uh now i think it's the web certainly zoom um anyways oh where are we okay um the sex home i i got this in the first batch of films i got so many years ago almost 30 years ago um when i got 500 films for 50 bucks and this one is a lulu and again this is one of those films that made me think like you know what these are funny but they actually kind of teach you something about our culture um beyond what they were trying to teach so um this one is psychological differences between the sexes enjoy [Music] so [Music] so [Music] everyone is aware that the differences between the sexes go beyond obvious physical factors for example there is the difference in muscular strength automatically the man will do any heavy work that needs to be done both the girl and boy understand that he is better equipped for such work than she is they also realize that there is a difference in the roles which society expects them to play and so she will be sympathetic if he is hurt but she realizes as well as he does that men aren't expected to fuss over a little pain the way a woman might [Music] seldom do such mutually acknowledged differences lead to problems but many misunderstandings might be avoided if young couples were aware that there are other ways in which the sexes differ psychological and emotional ways which may be subtle but are nevertheless important in any man-woman relationship [Music] for instance jane doesn't know that she has a different attitude toward people than jim has she hasn't been going with him long enough for her way to clash with his but to understand her way you should see it in action not long ago jane had a problem involving a friend who frankly didn't bathe as often as she should this is how jane handled it hi gwen hi james oh uh gwen yeah last time we had a gym i ran out of deodorant i was going to borrow some from you and i saw you didn't have any in your basket either so since i had to get some for myself i got some for you okay supposed to be real good but you have to use it every day after your shower all right i'll try indirectly and subtly using a roundabout method jane tries to get her point across in a woman's way and if she hadn't gotten it across this time she'd have tried something else equally indirect but the last method she would think of would be a direct or blunt way that might hurt gwen's feelings now let's see how a similar problem might be handled by jim yeah if he thinks he's going to overlook the rule about taking a shower this time the treatment i'm for that here in this school's as much ours as it is his he's polluting it and that's going to come to a screeching halt i have to sit beside him in history next door hi fellas well i practice that hook shot so long i don't have time to take a shower [Music] next time you have to be told to take a shower we may be forced to get a little [Music] rough direct action that's the man's approach the one jim and other men understand even the fellow whose feelings are most directly involved there's another difference between the sexes which can be used to illustrate the gulfs that must be bridged before a girl and boy really understand each other and that difference lies in their temperaments you ready for a surprise okay dessert first set your eyes [Music] i bet you didn't even know i knew today was your birthday gosh no thanks what's the matter oh nothing i just sort of thought you might want to save it was a souvenir of the first time we celebrated your birthday together oh oh oh yeah sure in general women place much more importance on romantic symbols men on the other hand generally have to work at being romantic remembering birthdays and anniversaries surprising their wives and sweethearts with little gifts we know that jane is romantic and sensitive to other people's feelings well she is equally sensitive about herself touchy is the word man might use when it comes to interpreting a harmless remark is one that is directed personally toward her jane what do you think of that new girl susan what's her name mccarty i don't know i don't know her very well yet why oh i was just wondering if she was going to fit in you know yeah yeah i guess i do a little she seems sort of standoffish except for the table wow how she eats stuffing it ain't smacking making all kinds of noise you think she'd know better okay gwen i can take a hint by making noise eating why don't you just say so jane personalizes comments immediately saying to herself am i like that and since she is human and quite likely to be like that she assumes the comment was really meant for her even though such a thought was far from gwen's mind and how about jim is he likely to be different from jane in this matter of applying general comments to himself let's see as far as i'm concerned toliver's out i don't want him on a double date particularly the awards banquet we're not slated to get any awards but oliver will he's a whiz so what he's a slob his clothes look like he spilled half his dinner on him what i've been saying toliver's out men usually do not take general comments personally that's tolliver to a t jim says and it never occurs to him that general remarks may have been aimed at him and of course they were not when jim direct in dealing with others is paired off with jane with her typically female qualities of being indirect romantic and subjective life may not always be the picnic it is at the moment and that's why i have to be home by six big family get together all the grandparents invited over boy my mom's really making a big production out of my birthday and uh just as soon spent the evening with you there'll be other evenings your mother will be disappointed if you're late why don't you come with me we can call your mother from my house but jim i can't i'm not dressed for a party you look swell to me come on the gym i haven't been invited what would your mother think what do you mean you haven't been invited i invited you i can't just walk in on her at the last minute she'd have table arrangements to do over again everything she won't care come on jim i can't she will too care if someone comes in who isn't expected besides i don't have time to get ready and i can't let your folks see me like this on a special occasion what's so special i've had lots of birthdays what's special is not really the occasion so much as it is what people will think girls must be continuously aware oppression their actions or appearance might create things a fellow can get by with won't do for his girl men should be aware that this attitude of society creates problems for women and indirectly for the men who love them if we could go with jane and jim into the future supposing that their attraction to each other develops into love and they are married we could see how misunderstandings based on the differences between the sexes might affect them say i saw bill noble as i was leaving the office he wants to look at those plans i've been working on here at home he and bill are going out tonight and he said they'd come by and get them oh no i've ironed all day the house is a mess relax they're only going to be here a minute relax when you're always pulling some horrible surprise on me oh jim why can't you give me enough notice to get ready when you invite people over i didn't invite jim didn't invite them but he or any man is inviting trouble when he ignores the importance to a woman of what people will think to look at the other side of the coin jane is inviting unnecessary problems by ignoring some facts about men from what you know of a man's reaction to the indirect approach see if you think jim is going to be able to fathom what jane is driving at him dear i noticed a new kind of electric shaver downtown supposed to be twice as fast as using a razor you could zip right over your beard before breakfast thought i might get you one oh i wouldn't be interested jane i want a close shave i don't care how long it takes so gym honey if it saved enough time so that you could shave before breakfast wouldn't that coffee get bitter this morning besides i barely got time to shave oh man well does getting along with members of your own sex help you understand the opposite sex did experience with other fellows give jim a hint that when a woman is just chattering she may be trying to tell him something trying to say i wish you'd shave before breakfast did getting along with other girls helped jane understand that when jim pushed away the coffee all he meant was i don't like the coffee not i don't like you but to get back to the picnic and jim's bewilderment because jane won't go with him to a birthday dinner because of the way she looks when it's his birthday to get back to jane's reaction to the masculine surprise that's been sprung on her a misunderstanding exists here because each persists in expecting a reaction from the other that one should expect only from someone of his own sex just don't understand the way you're acting no he's even talking to you james wrong there the way to avoid the difficulties that can arise from the differences between the sexes is to face up to these differences and to talk them over and as for other differences that may exist well you'll know that you've probably discovered one anytime you feel like saying to a boyfriend or girlfriend oh women oh man such exasperating moments usually come up because young people have never tried to face up to some of the psychological and emotional differences between the sexes so what about you what examples from your own experience illustrate other differences in masculine and feminine attitudes or behaviors now is the time to talk over these differences between the sexes to begin to go your half of the way toward the difficult business of understanding someone different from yourself so surprisingly that film is trying to be progressive and trying to talk about um what could be potentially causing problems with communication um and all that i think they needed to do was to say it's not necessarily gender but it's how that individual was raised and in most cases girls were raised this way during this time period and in most cases boys were raised this way in this time period it's not because of x and y chromosomes it is how they were culturally treated and you know that's what i would hope they would say but this film it's an interesting film because who why does the school care whether or not couples get together this was actually part of what was shown in a family life class and if you actually um went to some colleges there was a home ec degree or a family life degree that you would get and you would learn how to have a family how to run a family both physically but also dealing with the emotions and dealing with all that other stuff and so this is what that curriculum is from they probably also would have maybe taught it in high school but um it's fascinating it's really kind of an interesting film and infuriating in so many ways all right uh one last film to show before uh i go and uh digitize some home movies for saturday's upcoming home movie day event uh somebody asked um if i would take stuff from outside the local area we're pretty much full filled up for this upcoming event but we might do something in the future and you know the difficulty is sending stuff to us and you know how do we negotiate that right now it's easy for people to drop stuff off at the archive and then get it back to them um but there's a cost associated with this with shipping stuff so we have to kind of figure that out but and we'll see how this works out um but maybe in the future maybe in the late fall or winter um we'll be doing something like this again and and we'll expand the boundaries before we do it all right so anyways this film animated it's called hopscotch hmm hmm [Laughter] hmm [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] teddy hmm [Music] [Music] baby [Music] [Music] baby boom um [Music] um um um oh um [Music] wow [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh no one's doing it i have to follow everyone here says wow um what's that uh um beep [Music] later so that has a real john and faith hubley feel to it um the animation looks a little bit like it um and so you had two pretty good voice actors there june 4a uh and i can't remember the other one's name but they they're just going by and then they're not actually doing any lines but they're talented nonetheless uh so i tried to look up the animators names to see what else they did uh it looks like they used to work for upa um which was a big animation company that did um mr magoo among other cartoons and both um spencer peel and alan zazlov um work there in the 40s late 40s um so uh yeah interesting film i like films like that that are don't have necessarily uh they they work on an international market because you you don't have to translate um and so i see a lot of czech films that don't have people
