hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show uh we're not at the archive today but we hopefully will be there uh tomorrow or the next day and we'll be watching some more 16 millimeter films from that archive in the meantime uh i am still thinking about the time back in the day this was easily 13 years ago where we digitized 10 000 tv commercials for duke university's ad views project they basically got all the films from benton and bowles which was an agency and so there's all these like thousands and thousands and thousands of commercials that we digitized and what would happen is we would get a big deal of stuff so it'd be like an hour's worth of 10 second 30 second minute long commercials for whatever product so we did 13 hours of crest commercials we did pampers we did the history of sugar bear which i uh showed and talked about with the found footage festival a couple years ago just a wide variety of different things and one of the things that would happen is if you spent a day or two digitizing the same product your brain kind of turns to mush and you have to find out what the product is and so at some point i switched to crest for a while for about a year and we uh i got what was that coffee it was really horrible you ban you banned coffee there was a bunch of ads for u-ban coffee and i found it and uh i had an intern at the time that we were digitizing and we did a bunch of grape nuts commercials and my interns like what's grape nuts and i'm like oh my god so the next day over that night i went to the grocery store and found grape nuts um and we had it the next day and it was not great it was really um i guess we didn't know because it didn't say anywhere in the box that i saw that you have to let it sit in either hot water or in milk for a period of time otherwise it's super crunchy and it scrapes the roof of your mouth so we didn't let it sit along so we basically had milk poured it over and we were chewing it and it was like excruciatingly loud and it would just scrape the roof of my mouth and my assistant was at the time was like why do they call it grape nuts because we looked at the ingredients and it was just you know flour yeast salt and that was about it and so we did some research and we're not sure why it's called grape nuts it has a nutty flavor as you'll see in the ads that you're about to see but um there's not really a an explanation where the grape comes from and what's interesting about this is we get to see how vegetables is selling this product which is um you know it's how healthy it is and how natural it is and you know there's no added anything to it and they did eventually add i think some vitamins to it they enriched it so that they could get some people with food stamps can buy it but um it is you know it is very basic stuff and i have met some die hard grape nuts fans um and they chided me for not letting it soak long enough i'm like i don't sell this product this next thing we're going to see is kind of interesting this is a short little documentary about the whole campaign with yule gibbons joel gibbons if you look him up on uh wikipedia you'll see that he he wrote some books about you know eating things from nature and natural eating and they're all stalking the whatever is the title so um this is kind of talking about how they're co-opting his appearance and actually brought him to national attention and um a bunch of jokes about him thanks to johnny carson and others um and you know this is how they were selling this really kind of bland zero so enjoy these are high bush cranberries sorry [Music] these are high bush cranberries no good 15. these are wild all for god's sake [Music] a good share of the commercials you see on television begin life here on the island of manhattan the creative product of thousands of people at the more than 200 advertising agencies headquartered in new york city one of these agencies with offices on the top eight floors of 909 third avenue is benton and bowles whose copywriters art directors and producers one day recently were busy doing what they do every day making television commercials what kind of a due date do we have on this kenny uh we have 10 working days i think that's a fair amount of time i think so yeah the strategy attachment sure is right i'll keep in touch try kenny well this is the strategy that the account team briefed us on just recently it's a new one and i think it gives us a chance to do something that's really fresh and original in the serial category really george we've been uh thinking about this ever since our visit to the factory battle creek i was gonna say one of the things that was was pretty interesting about our trip was that we found out that grape nuts is actually baked like bread it's made from natural ingredients and based on that i think we can come up with some pretty interesting executions we have as milford said some pretty solid ideas already well it sounds like you're off to a good start okay we're ready so let's get to it yep first big job of the copywriter art director team to come up with an idea a way of talking to people about grape nuts that's informative interesting and different just had a thought you mentioned bake like bread one thing we could do is uh a baker you know like that natural food expert talking about terrific even if you took the thing back a couple steps and used the wheat farmer who is certainly an expert on natural foods he would be a terrific spokesman that we were looking at the other day his name is joel gibbons uh he's studied natural foods all his life and he's written several books on the subject i think it'd be very good i think he mentioned in this article uh cranberries didn't he yeah perhaps we could base our commercial on on something like that wild cranberry should be what if we had say a scene uh in in the snow and he says something like well i'm gathering part of my breakfast and you don't see anything but snow until you get to a close-up of the cranberry and then we could go to an inside uh scene where he's putting the cranberries on the grape nuts we're gonna have him starting out in the snow picking wild cranberries if you can believe that well that's once they have the idea the art director and assistant lay out a storyboard how do you see it how about if we have them up in the mountain things yeah sort of a western type of setting a few trees standing here in the foreground when do you think you'd be able to have uh all of us together have this board together uh tomorrow uh say four well can we get it a little a little quicker than that we're kind of in a hurry for 3 30. okay okay the storyboard is a blueprint of the commercial showing key scenes in a series of still pictures i call grape nuts my back to nature's cereal and of course next turtle selling the idea to bnb's top creative man do you think that a lot of people will know who uh gibbons is we we think that a lot of people will he's written several books and sold over half okay so the last thing we're going to watch is uh uh really kind of interesting because these were not meant to be shown um they were for internal use one of them is a i believe it's called an animatic and it's basically like an ant barely animated storyboard for a potential uh commercial and you you you can see this what this commercial was and what they were trying to do which is trying to get this sense of wholesomeness of back to nature spirituality it's kind of interesting and then the final thing we're gonna watch is uh one of these um you can't call it man on the street but it's one of these you know people sitting at a table uh talking about how much they love grape nuts and i think that this this goes way too long and it's not a commercial i think they just love what this woman said about the whole eating experience and how you have to eat grape nuts it's pretty funny so enjoy people are getting back to natural foods the amish never left them natural flavor and goodness is what they're used to so we asked this amish family to try vitamin fortified post grape nuts they were pleased grape nuts was made from natural grains they liked its wholesome wheat and barley it's naturally sweet nut-like taste but hilde yoder said it all when it's like a taste of nature in a box it's really noisy it starts out noisy and if you only chew it in one side you don't get the stereophonic effect and i think it's better if you chew it on both sides so you have a sense of balance and maybe a little thing but early in the morning we all need to be balanced and so chewing on both sides gives a sense of balance to the noise and the noise diminishes the more you chew the less noisy it gets it's really interesting how did you first know that they were crunchy my tongue said this is a hard object sitting on it and my teeth said we're meeting with hard objects but they're getting softer and and then my salivary glands are saying send out more juice because you've got to get these things down because they're a little dry and then when everything's all working tongue teeth and juice going you can chew and eat them and uh the brain says yes you just consumed something crunchy and that's what i say okay prove to me by you're eating it how crunchy it is oh if it's crunch i don't know if amy vanderbilt would approve you hear that it's really loud can't you hear that i mean when you're in here it's really loud now you hear any crunching going on it's like things are grinding in here i have to grind it must be hard if it's hard it's crunchy but now it's soft it's all over did you okay so i didn't even show you the black and white i had like four hours of greatness commercials so i picked out the ones that were color in color i pulled out all the grape nuts flakes commercials i think hopefully one didn't sneak in so that's a whole totally different campaign different product uh more palatable cereal i think um but yeah so we got it we did a deep dive into grape nuts you're welcome um if you like what you saw or even if you are mildly
