so so so so so do so so so so so so so so so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films um why is it so dark what's going on yeah that's what you want you tune in to watch me uh show old 16 millimeter films and then complain about the webcam and light that's that's our life here uh anyways uh i'm hoping that that um our argentine funk rock band doesn't uh slash reggae band doesn't um take us down for footage that is clearly ours like they did yesterday when we were watching super hippie but um we're gonna start off uh today's show with what we call a trigger film uh this film is intentionally designed to trigger conversation uh and the idea is to you know to trigger come up with something that's provocative so you discuss whatever the classwork is so i have a whole series of trigger films but this one is working with older people enjoy [Music] as you enter the senior citizen center office the secretary mrs brownlee greet you just a minute please senior citizen center yes mr allison what was that speak a little more slowly huh have you tried to talk with him about it yes well i think you've done everything you can what he said what i see i understand look mr allison i'm really busy now to talk to you about this later yes pardon oh yes i understand what you're going through i'm sorry but i really have to go okay yes mr allison i really have to hang up now goodbye are those reservations ready yet no i'm afraid not i'll bring them back to you in a few minutes okay that was mr allison on the phone his calls are what i wanted to talk to you about i don't know what i'm going to do he calls me about once an hour about something usually it's nothing important i know he just needs attention he's so lonely since his wife passed away you know she's the one who had a heart attack last month i understand his loneliness but i have my job to do how can i get my work done when he's constantly calling me ruth wanted those reservation sheets just now and they would have been ready if mr allison had been called three times already this morning what can i do [Applause] oh i gotta return some medicaid [Music] oh medicaid says my income is too high i can't believe it here i can't pay my bills and i have to spend so much for medicine each month and you know how i watch my money [Music] i spend every penny carefully to make it go as far as possible but there just isn't enough money oh yes the food stamps help but what i really need is some help of my payment of my medicine how can i afford my prescription every month i just can't believe they've refused me i felt sure when you helped me make out the form that i really get some help i've got to have the medicine that's all there is to it the doctor says i have to have it i have to have that medication [Music] maybe if i were married and i could fill out that other form show them a different way of my income that would be better but you know they're just against a single people i'll do is do it today you were visiting mrs white for the first time she was referred to you as a possible client by her pastor he thought she might need some of the community services with which you have contact yes if you've come to take me to that nursing home you can just forget it i told my son i wasn't gonna go to any nursing home not as long as i had the strength god gave me my son said i had to go to the nursing home because of my arthritis and my spells but i'm not going people just go there and die but i'm not ready to give up yet i don't want to go and live among a lot of old dying people oh it may not be easy for me living here alone but i'm not gonna give it up to go to any nursing home you you can just tell my son i'm not going today you are visiting the nutrition site in your community where older people gather for meals this is a fairly new site so you try to drop in for lunch two or three times a week to see how things are going aggie my sister visited me last night you should have seen her beautiful dress a kind of blueprint agatha are you going to sign up for crafts this afternoon no oh you're gonna miss a good one francis brought in some new material for the quilt and i just love to work on the quilt don't you don't you this is agatha bentley's birthday and we have a cake let's sing happy birthday to agatha happy birthday to you happy birthday to you happy birthday dear happy birthday to you i don't feel too bad from surgery can you stay a few minutes have a seat the pain is nearly all gone now i feel so helpless sitting here i'm not used to having people wait on me only i could get out and walk around i'd like to do things for myself come in hi oh i'm sorry i didn't know you had company this is chris williams from the office on aging chris this is anna glenco one of my neighbors how do you do i was just going by and thought i'd come to see what you wanted i'm on my way to the grocery oh some bread i guess and maybe some tomato juice fine you can pay me later nice meeting you chris bye it's nice savannah to come by and offer to pick things up for me at the grocery i don't know what i do with out friends like her and you i don't know how i can stand just sitting here months on end there's nothing for me to do i call them but they don't have a van available they don't have a van with a lift or a ramp they've called all over the county but there just is not a van available i don't know what to do sometimes i feel like giving up hey sorry i had to walk away and get a hard drive that i was running checksums on and um anyways uh so i have another one of those uh and i have quite a few i've shown library trigger films which are people that work in libraries uh they're ones for police officers but they are i don't know in this current climate i don't feel like i should so i should show them um but um really fascinating stuff this is the gets at the root of of you know what an educational film is about is all right it's open-ended um let's watch this and let's discuss based on what we've learned so far so um triggering was the point all right uh next film we got set up is uh what made sami speed and i looked in my database of what i've shown and i haven't shown this one yet this is a sid davis film to davis if you remember is was based in santa monica area of uh southern california and was a started off as an amateur kind of filmmaker and kind of built a company and it feels like he made the same film over and over and over again which is about the the dangerous stranger and so there's lots of variations on that but this one uh veers into um driver safety and what's interesting is he would reuse uh his scripts a lot uh he would also rarely have uh people talking on camera because that was more expensive and more difficult oh wait you can't hear me can you guys hear me yeah you can hear me um and um so this is very similar to another film that he made that was for kids called a bicycle clown and it's using the same kind of ideas although the results here are more dire uh so here's what made sammy speak enjoy [Music] [Music] under this ambulance sheet lie sam robertson age 17. his parents proudly called him son his girl affectionately called him robbie his little brother admiringly called him sammy but the nickname in which he took the greatest pride was the one he'd earned among his high school friends speedy and that's what killed him why did this have to happen what were the reasons for sammy's persistent speeding what were the causes and events that led up to this tragic ending these are vital questions i'm a juvenile officer and i decided to find out my first call was made upon sammy's family i talked with his father a well-liked and respected resident of his community when i told him what i wanted mr robertson at once consented to give me the history of sammy's driving at first sammy's father had resisted his son's request for permission to use the family car the issue had become quite a conflict between them until finally mr robertson reluctantly gave in on condition that sam buy his own gas and oil this to teach him the value of money it was a sound and sensible obligation and he also earnestly admonished sam to drive carefully and heed all the traffic rules but mr robertson's own driving habits left much to be desired and although he was a skillful driver many small collisions were avoided only by the alertness of the other drivers perhaps it was while watching his own father drive that sam first got the unfortunate idea that a good driver can take chances and mr robertson said that sam had been before me only once on a speeding charge i remembered the incident well sam admitted going too fast and was willing to take his punishment but his father was quite outraged at the fact that the police haul in good clean-cut kids for driving a little fast especially when they're good drivers while the streets are filled with thieves and murders it was a standpoint all too often encountered how much did it contribute to sammy's own attitude toward speeding and i recall that sammy's little brother billy with fierce pride had said to me sammy can drive better and faster than anyone billy was convinced that it was the other drivers that were the bad ones for sammy never had any trouble [Music] it was clear to me that this obvious hero worship from his younger brother must have been important to sammy perhaps making him take more reckless chances and drive even faster my next stop was the high school sammy had attended i talked to several of sami's teachers soon after sammy had enrolled in the school he'd become popular with the other students they all agreed with the opinion voice by one of his teachers who said that sammy seemed to be a conscientious and responsible youngster a good student not brilliant but intelligent and showing good common sense in his work i made it a point to talk to some of sami's friends in his attempt to become accepted and looked up to by a schoolmate sammy had tried to impress them with his driving he sure could handle a car at any speed they told me but in spite of this most of them wouldn't ride with him [Music] and once sammy had earned his friend's admiration he thought his reputation for fast driving had to be kept up even as girl wendy admitted that she thought is speeding manly and courageous and now she felt ashamed and guilty as she told me of the thrilling sense of power she had shared with sammy speeding if only she had realized when they told me that recently one of sammy's close friends had been in a wreck and might be permanently crippled but sammy's attitude seemed to have been the usual it can't happen to me and his own reckless speeding continued he took more chances than ever almost defiantly now [Music] and i was told how sammy was scornful of cautious drivers and always told woman driver jokes [Music] i learned how sammy used to boast of his recipe for beating a rap if stopped by a patrolman for a traffic violation his trick was always to be extra courteous and polite act real remorseful and say yes officer all the time it often worked sammy had actually been stopped several times and let go with a warning [Music] i went to see sammy's coach and found him on the field he told me that only a few days ago sammy had tried out for first base [Music] but he hadn't been able to make perhaps sammy had wanted to make up for this failure in some other way through his speeding which resulted in his death from the doctor who had given sammy a recent physical examination i learned that he was in tip-top shape he felt that the cause of sammy's collision had been nothing physical his reflexes were sound his eyes were perfect his heart was strong why did it happen then not because of slow reaction time but because of reckless speeding and perhaps an attitude sammy worked a part-time job after school and his employer told me that he had found him to be a dependable boy friendly and courteous and he never knew him to drink a smoke he also told me that the day before sammy's unfortunate mishap he had asked for a raise a request which it had been necessary to deny sammy had been disappointed unduly so he felt and he thought the boy probably needed the extra money to meet his expenses with the car then the following day saturday sammy had picked up his girl to go for a ride [Music] [Music] do [Music] oh though there was not just one reason for sammy's feeding but many and they had brought us both here sammy's early difficulties with his father over permission to use the car might have caused his mind to look upon it as a symbol of adult power and superiority and speeding became a way of exercising this power and his own father's driving example and attitude might have given him the dangerous notion that it's all right for a good driver to take chances the admiration his speeding earned him from his little brother and the popularity with his friends at school must have been necessary and important for sammy and subconsciously he must have wanted to make up in this way for other small failures and disappointments sammy speeding then was an emotional outlet and a tragically ill-starred one for it was a compensation for feeling of insecurity and inferiority unhealthy thrill-seeking immature defiance of authority and a lack of a sense of responsibility as well as misguided attempts to show superiority these then were some of the reasons for sami speeding there may have been others if there were he took them with him it's our good friend the uh crash sound effect that was used in um was it called transfusion the nervous nervous uh song um so it shows up a lot we hear it a lot uh so much so that it's it's even though it sounds kind of uh tragic in the uh how it's used is now kind of funny because we keep hearing it over and over again all right so behind me behind me i have a film scanner and i have a film set up it's by family films which were the people that did these kind of sitcoms well not really sitcoms they're more just kind of dramas uh about uh christian values in the family and um so i have not transferred this uh and it's very vinegared so it's gonna kind of wave a little bit but um we'll give it a shot we'll see if it works so here is uh where is it i don't want to win enjoy hold on the tension thing i'm trying to get it to be tense and then also frame it correctly i think i got it right [Music] i'm home honey oh hello dear hiya hi honey where's chuck oh he's over at jimmy's house he should be home soon how'd you pay the gas electric billion when marketing yes dear hey mom mom there's gonna be a soapbox derby and i can be in it hi dad all right all i have to do is build my own racer like this one look jimmy's gonna enter and i'm gonna too can i dad can i well i don't see why not dear sponsored locally by dawson motor company or this mr dawson he's your church school teacher isn't he yeah she gonna show you how to build this car of course not he can't according to the rules in the book nobody's to help me i gotta build the whole thing myself it's whoever builds the best car that wins best one wins eh well then we'll just have to build the best one what do you mean we i just told you i got to build the whole thing myself the rules say so well there's no law against getting a little advice from your dad is he especially when your dad has to foot the bill you figured how much this is going to cost yet son the book says i'm not allowed to spend more than ten dollars ten dollars you can't build much of anything for ten dollars well that's besides the wheels and the axles we buy those from mr dawson's place well that still doesn't leave much for the rest of the body that is if you're aiming for a winner tell you what we do let's see if we can rustle up in the garage yeah rex now just a minute you two supper will be on the table in a few minutes so suppose you both wash up right now okay mom i'm sure this big engineering project can wait till after supper i thought a soapbox racer was simple do you mean to say it takes all this to build one yeah and a lot of other stuff too i already spent more than eight dollars and i still don't have the body yet or the pain or anything i'll never make it i still need a piece of plywood like this here oh no you don't now this is the wood your father bought to make me a spice cupboard he's been promising to get at it for weeks i'll let him have it honey i can always buy another piece oh all right say wait a minute how much you gonna charge me for it the rules say i gotta keep count of how much everything cost well suppose we say um 50 cents that sound fair enough to you oh boy [Music] that's what you get for making a racer out of my cupboard come on boy let's go to work huh car shall have a wheelbase of 40 inches [Music] here hey let me see that book again just as i thought not less than 40 inches but you can have more lots more mind spread them out you think i should sure you'll get more speed might be the difference between winning and not i'll get the square [Music] now put in the cotter pin [Music] i'll bend the end over like i showed you on the other ones yeah dad i know ah boy it is fun yeah watch it son you're drilling out of the slant [Applause] [Music] job charles lunch is ready you go ahead and son out put these tools away and be right in [Music] totally let the driller on a slant [Music] dad you're not supposed to touch that well i was just gonna straighten it out a little i oh what's a little hole anyway i i just started it you can finish it after lunch boy this is complicated you got the steering figured out yeah yeah and the bulkheads too i'm working on the brakes now how do you do it so fast well i just did that's all you can ask your dad about the steering you know it isn't against the rules to get advice yeah i know but i don't want to this is a private project how about your dad she's been hanging around much yeah sure you know how it is with grown-ups you're telling me i had to tell my dad to stay away first thing you know i'd start taking over then i'd get disqualified this is a lot of work but it'll be worth it though when we go zooming down those hills launch up yeah yeah sure [Music] hi chuck hello mr dawson something i can do for you it's about the soapbox derby mr dawson what about it having troubles well i guess so it's about the rules something you don't understand here oh i understand them all right it's just well i was wondering if someone broke the rules and wasn't found out and went ahead and won that wouldn't be fair would it no no of course it wouldn't you see chuck winning a game or a race isn't too important but playing the game according to the rules that's the important thing it's the same thing we talked about a couple of weeks ago in sunday school if you can't obey the rules then you can't win not really now can you no i guess not let's put it this way what good would it do anybody to win a game or a race if he didn't do it honestly the fellow would be cheating himself out of the greatest victory of all the real fun in winning is knowing that you've done it fairly and squarely now do you get me well i think so but what if one of the fellas was stuck on something and i told him how i did mine would that be against the rules no no not any real rules that i know of of course so if he let you help him build his racer then that would be cheating just the same as though he spent more than the ten dollars for material thanks mr dawson i just wanted to make sure about the rules bye chuck i'll be waiting to see that racer bye mr dawson i'm home oh it can't be that time already why i haven't even thought of starting supper oh relax honey i just had to come home from the plant early wasn't anything doing so i thought maybe chuck and i could get a couple extra hours in on this racer before dark dear aren't you taking a little too much interest in this project well since when can a father take too much interest in his son that's what dads are for give him the benefit of his experience keep him from making mistakes but dear have you thought that you might be keeping him from something else like what the satisfaction of doing something for himself well he is doing something for himself well i've hardly touched that right sir my only this morning i had an idea that if chuck would take the plywood please don't waste that talk on me you know i'm beginning to think i'll be glad when that racer's finished so things can get back to normal around here tell chuck i'm in the garage [Music] oh there you are i was just about to phone over timmy's house house until your dad got home early he's waiting for you in the garage well how's jimmy coming along with his racer he's still working on the steering i tried to tell him how i did mine but i couldn't i couldn't remember how it went together i just did what dad told me to do well isn't it nice that you have dad to help you but he's not supposed to the rules say i have to do it myself and dad won't let me he just won't let me [Music] well what do you think now all chuck has to do is finish sanding her and paint her and she's ready to go he turned out to be quite a builder didn't he what's the matter something wrong yes there is with this racer oh what do you mean why it's perfect i bet this can beat them all but it isn't mine what do you mean it isn't yours dad i didn't really build it oh what are you talking about of course you build it i know you were trying to help me win that but i don't want to win not that way if i enter the car in the race now it wouldn't be fair you mean you're not going to enter the race i'm sorry dad but i can't but i still can have a lot of fun playing with it mom is it okay if i take it over and show it to jimmy of course dear give me a push will you dad i want to see how far i can close i can't get over it my own boy having to straighten me out i'm supposed to set an example what happens 11 year old boy hits me right between the eyes i'm stupid can a guy be [Music] somewhere in here it says a little child shall lead them whoever said it must have had me in mind [Music] i'm mighty proud of that boy of mine especially the kind of a christian he's growing up to be we parents are supposed to teach our youngsters by setting a good example i guess that's where i sort of let my enthusiasm get the better of me but there are times when we can learn plenty from our children especially when it comes to putting into practice our faith in christ the savior that's why i'm proud of the way chuck did the right thing about his racer you can be sure you won't catch me slipping again well i i hope what are you going to do with you um you know if this was a real sitcom maybe a late 60s early 70s so chuck would make his dad stop helping him and then his dad would go to the next door neighbor's kid whose dad is an alcoholic or isn't isn't there too busy for his kid he would help him make something that would beat his own son's racer that's where the the drama and the comedy come in um yeah so i have a couple of these uh and they feature character actors that sometimes show up on television uh in movies and um yeah it's like leave it to beaver but somebody's reading the bible at the end all right um here's another film i don't i looked in our uh spreadsheet of films that i've shown and i don't think i've shown this one so here's a roller skate safely enjoy [Applause] [Music] everybody [Music] [Music] oh [Music] roller skating the sport of the 80s with a long and colorful history behind it you can trace its beginning all the way back to 18th century belgium it became a marvelous form of exercise and fun for boys and girls and men and women of all ages and the sport quickly spread to countries all over the world the first skate wheels were wooden later metal but in the early 1970s roller skating really came into its own with the invention of the urethane wheel originally devised for skateboards the wheels were quickly adapted to roller skates and the sport enjoyed a rebirth of popularity with young and old alike by the time the 1980s rolled around there were babysitting roller skaters stunt skaters club skaters and music-minded skaters wheels [Music] because more and more people are discovering the sport every day there are certain aspects of it you should know to help you skate safely and really enjoy it if you're in the market to rent or buy skates well you won't have far to look roller skating has become big business [Music] skates come in a variety of styles designs and colors prices range from around twenty dollars into the hundreds of dollars the less expensive skates will probably be less durable and could be less safe experienced skaters say that boot skates give the best support so choose yours carefully [Music] most amateur and recreational skaters are not aware of the importance of safety gear and this has caused an alarming number of injuries the experienced skater and members of skate clubs are very aware of this and never skate without the proper protective equipment [Music] the biggest danger comes from the unexpected fall in most falls it's the risk that's most vulnerable the wrist guard is a must in preventing serious fractures or breaks wrist fractures account for most of the 100 000 roller skating injuries reported each year knee pads and elbow pads will help prevent fractures and skin burns the same holds true for gloves and for the more daring stunt skaters helmets are a must [Music] uh [Music] [ __ ] the most experienced skater knows that routine maintenance and safety checks are very important it doesn't take a lot of time and can help prevent serious injuries this is billy burke an expert skater instructor and director of the national skate patrol of california okay we're going to talk about tying our skates right now when we look at our skates the first thing we want to look at is the toes towards the toes you want the laces a little bit loose but firm now right up in the instep here that's the most important you want that quite firm and then as you go up towards the uh the top of the skate then it's kind of loose you notice the way i have no dangling laces that's very important too now let's look at the toe stop toe stop there's really not that much to it you just make a simple adjustment to take it off or put it on but if you want a little bit extra life to your toe stop you can rotate it uh the next thing we're going to look at is our wheels if you got them too loose you're going to have a a lousy ride it's not going to be smooth at all if you got them too tight they're not going to spin so what you do you loosen them up until they spin freely without any side play test them i spin them great no problem at all next i'm going to make adjustment on my trucks if need be how do i know that i'm going to put it between my knees and i'm going to rock them back and forth if they move from side to side quite easily then maybe they're a little bit too loose if they don't move at all they're definitely too tight and you won't be able to steer them so what i want to do i want to take my tool right now and i want to move it counterclockwise here i'm making them a little bit looser and i'm going to test them again what i'm going to do here is just make one final adjustment maybe a turn and a half couple of turns to the right test them one more time perfect what i want to do now is i want to give my skate a once over i'm gonna recheck my kingpin i'm gonna check my wheels i'm gonna check my toe stops and if everything is right then i'm ready to go on the road [Music] once you're sure your skates are in proper condition you should be equally sure of your skating skills you're just starting out you may want to take some lessons from an experienced instructor one of the most important things a student needs to know when he gets out there and skates is how to stop first i'm going to show a toe stop probably the easiest most basic stop of all okay i want to start by actually resting my weight on the back toe stop i like all my students to know that when they do a toe stop that their foot should slightly point out if it points straight down it's going to bump on the pavement notice the way my toe is very slightly pointed out and there's quite a lot of pressure on that back toe stop okay the next stop is the t stop this is a little bit more sophisticated but a far better stop and i require all my students to learn that within the first few weeks now what i'm going to show is the fall okay notice the way i flex my knees students they never learn to bend their knees in the first few weeks because they're so stiff if you can teach people the importance of bending their knees and being flexible a lot of injuries will be reduced now that fall right there the most important part of it was tucking the elbows in being relaxed and getting as close to the ground as possible and of course the safety equipment goes along with that now here's some of my students they're going to try this this should be fun a lot of them picked it up quickly they're a little bit nervous the thing that she didn't do there is she didn't really get into the fall you've got to roll you must roll if you don't roll what's going to happen is you're going to take up all the impact of the ground if i can get my students to roll they're not going to get hurt [Music] where you skate can be as important as how you skate parks with smooth skating lanes are your best bet [Music] skating around slower moving pedestrians can cut down on your fun and mobility it could also result in possible injury to you or a pedestrian [Music] in most places skaters have equal rights with pedestrians to sidewalk space but since skaters obviously move faster they need to exercise more responsibility courtesy and common sense while there are some establishments that allow skates to be worn inside be aware of off-limit areas [Music] and remember skaters are bound by the same regulations as pedestrians when crossing at intersections [Music] be aware that alcohol and drugs do not mix with any sport skating included loss of coordination and control at high speed is dangerous business [Music] have fun but stay alert use common sense think of your skates as sporting equipment and skating as the sport it is a sport great enough to be considered for olympic competition [Music] so [Applause] well think you might like to try roller skating [Music] if so then keep these basics in mind know your equipment keep it in good running order take a tip from experienced skaters wear the proper protective gear every time you skate knee pads elbow pads and especially wrist guards pick a good smooth safe place to skate away from automobile and pedestrian traffic [Music] know the limitations of your equipment and your ability exceeding either one could result in serious injury then go ahead and enjoy yourself in the fastest growing sport in the world [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] that was great uh we'll see what youtube says about who
