hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films uh and talk about them and mostly they're from our archive but as you can see i'm not in my archive right now um i have my assistants uh slaving away there but i am elsewhere uh and what we're going to watch today are actually 30 35 millimeter films um i was i'm working with a person right now uh who has access to a lot of national archives films and this what we're going to watch today are a lot of newsreels from around basically from the 40s some of them during world war ii and some of them just after world war ii there's some universal news reels in there but there's also this company called united news reels incorporated and that was a company that was kind of set up by several different newsreel companies to work with the office of war of war information regarding um all the information about what was happening during the world war ii as far as the battles but also what was happening on the home front and it was basically propaganda but um really some fascinating stuff here so uh that's what we're gonna watch today i'm not gonna interrupt uh i'm gonna let let it flow for a while uh so there's lots of cheery narration lots of uh super like patriotic music to make you feel good about what you're watching um and yeah that's that's what a good news reel does so let's watch this and enjoy radiant vigorous dwight d eisenhower is a man in any cloth be it that of soldier educator or statesman born and reared in modest surroundings his first memories could be those of a hundred million other americans many many of us could feel at home in ike's boyhood room could show similar family tin types and duplicate this record of happy school days while a world whose liberty he saved may be thankful he chose west point to start his career a career that flowered in victory over rommel in the deserts of north africa the first major allied triumph in world war ii after a nightmare of defeats sharing the laurels of this moment with britain's gallant montgomery general eisenhower displayed the understanding that brought about his selection to lead the crusade in europe ike becomes the architect of victory in europe the inspiring figure that conceived and executed d-day and the following campaign that swept the forces of hitler to total defeat the united nations will gratefully remember tedder montgomery spots bradley delott crear and many others but all these agree with me in the selection of the truly heroic figure of this war he is g.i joe paris made him the man of the hour and in london the sorely tired populist acclaimed him churchill's trust was vindicated his own people took him to heart his radiant assurance his pleasing modesty new york simply can't do this to our kansas farmer boy and keep its reputation for sophistication battle weary gis in florida thought it natural when he came among them for a checkup that found him hail and hearty and even as you and i ike shared with mrs eisenhower the satisfaction of becoming grandparents feeling nothing is greater than the simple fact a child is born eisenhower's for another generation to keep the smiths jones and brown's company they are the children of his only son a leader in civilian life as president at columbia i championed the cause of freedom in today's struggle no free man no free institution can be neutral all must be joined in a common profession that of democratic citizenship but the threat of communist aggressions again called on general eisenhower's genius for getting things done and in one short year as supreme commander of shape he did what no statesman before him could ever do from norway to greece and turkey he made allies of old enemies made the dream of the united states of europe a realizable fact we here at shape representatives of many nations work day by day constantly with these intricate and difficult problems we require faith self-confidence devotion tenacity always tenacity at home meanwhile his own people clamored for his leadership shocked by disclosures of corruption they now called on ike to return in demonstrations unique in politics and in primary elections they issued a clear-cut call that could not be denied senator lodge carried the message and ike now assured that the foundation for european solidarity was well set said goodbye to the organization that remains a lasting monument to his skill for handling critical situations so entering the presidential race he again parts company with old comrades comrades in arms and my friends the uniform services of the united states are far too deeply embedded in my heart for me ever to say a final goodbye i hope you will allow me to say until we meet again the boy who went forth to battle returns to abilene kansas and the scenes of his childhood the most notable figure of his time ladies and gentlemen i believe we can have peace with honor reasonable security with national solvency i believe in the future of the united states of america the republican national convention at chicago recognized the voice of the people and made ike the leader of still another crusade i take up this task therefore in a spirit of deep obligation mindful of his burdens and of his decisive importance i accept your summons i will lead this crusade biv whacking beside campfires develops many skills a useful one being how to throw together a breakfast for visitors to his vacation retreat major john eisenhower follows in the footsteps of his father as he leaves to serve his country in korea his parents a wife and three children will miss him but he's the good soldier the women must weep a man who knows responsibility and how best to shoulder it we give you dwight david eisenhower a soldier learns as a nation must learn that integrity backed by strength is the only sure way to lasting peace our country's destiny to my mind is to serve mankind through leadership in the arts of peace if we believe in our own system if we allow no taint of false doctrine to confuse it if we practice what we preach if we provide upright leadership we can help to show the world the folly of war with all the strength i can command and the devotion i hold for my country i pledge myself to this objective so in the old state department building in washington a president is set for the eisenhower administration as the washington press corps arrives to meet the president for the first of his weekly conferences there are 234 of the elite of american journalism present to hear the chief executive's opening statement on farm prices secret foreign agreements russian possession of the atom bomb balancing of the budget and excess profits taxes out of the 34-minute conference eleven minutes are devoted to a rapid fire series of questions and answers questions which the president answers frankly and without evasion next on the white house agenda is the arrival of governor adlai stevenson defeated democratic candidate for an informal discussion with the president of his forthcoming round the world tour the president promises to aid governor stevenson in his trip to trouble spots of the world and then invites his former rival to the bipartisan congressional luncheon held weekly at the white house this is democracy in action the worst blaze in years rages along baltimore's waterfront fanned by 40 mile an hour winds into an 18 alarm fire years hundreds of feet from the start of the blaze are ignited and floating embers impede fire boats on the job two-thirds of the city's fire department is called out before the blaze is quenched and the toll reckoned up no lives are lost but damages are heavy five piers destroyed three industrial plants and one million feet of board lumber in a storage shed the cost of the blaze is estimated at two million dollars a severe blow to the city's waterfront industry this is the grim aftermath of a transport plane crash in the gulf of mexico which took the lives of 46 persons rescue vessels collect belongings of passengers and crew members salvaged from the sea the airliner presumably caught in a cyclone plummeted into the water a short distance from the alabama coast and was located in 90 feet of water 11 bodies were recovered as they floated free of the plane the transport was on a flight from tampa to new orleans over the gulf when disaster struck 41 passengers and five crew members perished as the plane disintegrated struck the water with terrific force and tragic results the volcanic outburst of carnival spirit climaxes new orleans mardi gras with a rex parade as thousands throng the downtown streets practically anything goes as the spirit of revelry reaches its height in this case boy meets girl fit for a sultan's palace they are the can-cans can and do everybody's feeling bully for the rex parade which had its origin in 1872 the glowworm blows his top another reveler gets a lift from the proceedings hemlines will be higher but him likes them lower run for the hills men annie's here and she's having a barrel of fun everybody is what the well-dressed young man and i mean young man will wear this coming summer is of such import as to warrant this small fry influx at essex house in new york city our young man from 12 on down has finally come into his own fashion wise his female counterpart has recognized his sartorial importance to the extent of passing judgment on forthcoming fashions for an embryo best well-dressed chips and twigs is the name of the makers of these high styles for low boys dressers all with a junior fashion committee taking secret notes on their opinions of the clothes of course long pants short pants no matter what the cut the young ladies scan all the offerings and finally will decide just what their young sense of fashion prefers in a little man most gals do this after they're married or at least after they acquire a bow so the four fashion judges here really got the jump on their sisters how brother feels is anybody's guess the opinions of the judges will be publicized at some later date opinions of the young men vary this one wants out in his own fashion randy turpin the british middleweight title holder and former world champ continues his fight a month campaign this month it's in leicester england against the south japan no military secret the news but where has the japs puzzled today on islands that once held promise of paradise u.s blue jackets go about the grim business of war ferrying fighter planes ashore scout planes and bombers concealed and camouflaged amid the palms of the island moving in with plenty of aviation gasoline oil and supplies all the necessary equipment for invasion or defense wading waist deep in tropical waters they chart a base for seaplanes ashore giant tractors blaze clearings among the ponds here come the big guns and they're soon made ready for action patrolling the strongholds from which the united nations plan their offensive against japan women in the war u.s navy nurses line up for inspection in their new summer uniforms every day new legions are being called to active duty afloat and ashore ready to follow the fleet to any battlefront these traditional angels of mercy no but one code service to humanity women as always the heroes of all wars in washington the commander of the newly formed women's army auxiliary corps begins her duties a housewife and mother she will direct an army of 250 000 women women who will work behind the lines relieving more men for combat duty in the field the first call for volunteers brings thousands to recruiting stations upon passing rigid examinations they will undergo intensive training live like regular soldiers under strict army regulations american women signing up to fight shoulder to shoulder with their men the commander at the capitol for the first time in history the army now has an authorized army of women in mountain country a woman's motorcycle corps takes to the field trained as dispatch riders they carry messages and first aid equipment to lonely outposts women of america serving on the home front the greatest lineup of champions to take the field since the last olympic games features the american athletic union track meet at new york city finish of the 110 meter dash and the winner is san francisco's harold davis in classic greek style america's champion heaving the 16-pound shot put nearly 60 feet here they go in the 110 meter high hurdles sports playing an important part in the physical training program for america's youth watch the youngster nearest the camera a university student he wins the title in 14 seconds and here's the pole vaulter they all talk about warmer dam only man ever to leap higher than 15 feet champion of the world par excellence the u.s post office inaugurates a fast new mail service for soldiers and sailors overseas letters written on special forms four by five inches when folded are stamped and posted like regular mail each letter passed by the sensor is photographed on small rolls of 16 millimeter microfilm a 100 foot roll of film can carry 1500 individual letters quite a saving in cargo space when you realize that 150 000 letters that ordinarily fill 22 sacks will on microfilm take just one bag on arrival the letters are enlarged to readable size good news for servicemen overseas filmed under fire these are the first pictures of america's great naval victory in the pacific army navy and marine planes cooperating with the fleet surprise a [ __ ] invasion force sent to capture strategic midway island stepping stone to hawaii and the north american continent u.s planes roaring to the attack amid a reign of anti-aircraft fire below a blazing enemy cruiser fatally hit maneuvering to get away dazed by the unexpected sea and air assault the japs seek desperately to escape the toll 18 japanese ships cruisers carriers and destroyers crippled like this or sent to the bottom a blow more than equal to the defeat japan suffered in the battle of the coral sea back in port admiral nimitz who directed the action bestows medals for deeds of valor they fought the strangest naval battle in history a battle in which the ships were hundreds of miles apart the stories told by these hero pilots may rewrite all textbooks on naval warfare they proved again and again that warplanes can blast battleships and transports in one epic engagement these men upset the balance of power in the pacific the lesson is learned today american plants speed production of more and more giant bombers for bombers like these played a devastating role not only in winning the battles of midway and the coral sea but they're carrying their messages home to the nazis operating day and night on a 24-hour mass production schedule america giving wings to the greatest armada of fighting ships the world has ever known and here are more men ready to fly them midshipmen saluting the color girl as families of naval cadets come to see their sons made officers of the fleet and the fleet air arm today they march in their final review the cream of america's young manhood their lives dedicated to uphold the tradition of the navy inside the historic hall of the old academy they receive their wartime commissions a year early four ships and planes are waiting new fighting men ready to man america's all ocean navy henderson airfield on guadalcanal is the most hotly contested strip of land in the south pacific new runways built by american soldiers with captured japanese equipment are inspected by the marine commanders their cobras fighter planes are constantly on patrol for five months the japs have tried to win back this vital outpost but their transports bombed and beached lie wrecked on the sands of the solomon islands general van der grift and general bogle push forward into the jungle directing the campaign that has killed nearly 7 000 japs on guadalcanal alone the japs call guadalcanal death island supporting the infantry the marines big amphibious tanks bring up supplies over any road or through no roads at all offshore an american freighter battles an oil fire just as she was preparing to land her cargo calmly the marines fight the flames all supplies are saved and the ship will sail again the earliest americans american indians show their true patriots when a troop train pauses here on its way through the far west they bring baskets of home-cooked foodstuffs for the men in uniform they're proud of their honor roll 700 indian boys from one small county are serving with america's armed forces in their workshops navajo women famous for their handicraft make gifts and games for red cross packages from this primitive home a navajo chief has sent three sons to the army american indians loyal to their country the air transport of tomorrow becomes the reality of today the constellation america's newest land-based cargo plane is ready for her first flight beneath her wings a p-38 fighter plane looks like a toy miniature built to fly at 35 000 feet in the stratosphere the big ship is said to be faster than a [ __ ] zero fighter plane four powerful engines lift the sky giant along a plane that can cross the american continent or the atlantic ocean in eight hours with a full load forerunner of a mighty fleet on the pacific coast a new steel mill is completed at the kaiser shipyard mr kaiser is the man who builds ten thousand ton liberty ships in four days the giant blast furnace begins to operate for the first time no longer will they have to transport materials all the way from the big eastern steel mills now they'll make steel plates for steel ships right on the spot american motorcycle dispatch riders train on forces just as difficult as they will find soon in action in africa in alaska in the south pacific or on the continent of europe for following these tests they're off to battlefronts around the world signal flares off the coast of africa united states reinforcements beating off a german attack as the americans land under fire on land they take nazi prisoners many of them valuable flyers in garing's lift papa sent out of the country in transports they go to prison camps their days of raiding over the first skirmish between united states and german tanks proved the superiority of american equipment over the nazis famous mark fours and men and equipment are arriving every day to drive the axis out of africa a treaty restoring to china full sovereignty over her own soil is signed by chinese ambassador dr wade dalming and the american secretary of state cordell hull the pact ends united states occupation of so-called treaty ports and marks the beginning of a new era in the far east in china america is giving chiang kai-shek all aid possible giant transport planes speed chinese troops to far-flung battlefronts troop movements that formerly took months now men are hurled across mountains in a matter of hours american planes and american equipment helping china beat the [ __ ] in the united states capital at washington the new american congress chosen and elected by the people of every state the symbols to hear president roosevelt bring a message of hope and courage to free men everywhere the axis powers knew that they must win the war in 1942 or eventually lose everything i do not need to tell you that our enemies did not win the war in 1942 i cannot tell you when or where the united nations are going to strike a next in europe but we are going to strike and strike hard i cannot tell you whether we are going to hit them in norway or through the low countries or in france or through sardinia or sicily or through the balkans or through poland or at several points simultaneously but as we face that continuing task we may know that the state of this nation is good the heart of this nation is sound the spirit of this nation is strong the faith of this nation is eternal at an army air force base in arizona women mechanics learn to service the big bombers receive expert instruction in every phase of aircraft maintenance a plane named in their honor gets a thorough going over by the air wax as they're called from motor to tail assembly the girls make ready the giant battleships of the air 65 000 strong they relieve men for combat duty today the wax are serving with the armed forces in every major theater of war the first contingent to arrive in australia gets a real welcome reporting for duty half a world away from home these united states army women are making a vital contribution to the cause of the united nations at a bomber plant in seattle workers write their names on a flying fortress the 5 000 ship of its type turned out by this one plant since america entered the war many other plants are also building these ships five thousand since pearl harbor a graphic indication of the vast bomber production of the united states already this completely autographed ship is an action over germany somewhere in england army signal corps cameramen await the order to go into action with general eisenhower's forces of liberation aboard ship navy cameramen are stationed to photograph the part the fleet will play in the coming action these are some of the men whose courage and daring make possible many of the thrilling films you see in united newsreel some are on leave from their studios others are on active duty as members of the armed forces all are ready to record the picture story of the war's greatest drama in washington dc two american air races held a reunion with their families captain john godfrey shown here with mother and father shot down 29 nazi planes captain don gentilly's score of 30 nazi ships downed makes him the leading american ace of the european theater home for captain gentilly is piqua ohio population 20 000. piqua is a typical small american city a service flag hangs in the window for don and here is his welcome home sister edith is so happy she can only hug her brother for joy father and mother gentilly patriotic americans of italian ancestry are justly proud of their son for he wears a distinguished service cross awarded him by general eisenhower right now it's mother's turn the most important welcome of all from the air the shattered town of casino was little more than a name on a map after six months of savage battle for this key bastion on the road to rome now allied bombers strike deep behind nazi lines confusing the enemy's transport and foreshadowing a new allied drive north of rome bombs hit two important bridges the heaviest allied barrage of the war precedes a dawn attack british motorized forces plunged forward in the final battle for casino with vital aid from french and polish troops they have encircled casino cutting it off from the main german armies the whole casino sector is spotted with bomb and shell craters testifying to the fury of the action in this embattled area the first prisoners streamed to the rear bull-shaped helmets identify them as parachutists so-called green devils members of the german first parachute division along italy's west coast near gaiita where the bulk of the fifth army has been suddenly shifted a second phase of the campaign flares into action driving through minterno santa maria infante and terminoli u.s infantry moves toward a junction with forces 60 miles away at anzio castle 40 between casino and the sea is captured by french units in the most important action in which these men of fighting france have yet participated they have made a brilliant record these are italian refugees freed from nazi-held areas in their faces is graphically written to grim effects of fascist rule and years of war american and allied troops do what they can to aid them prisoners are taken by the thousands more than 12 000 were captured in the first two weeks numbed and shocked by the fury of the allied attack they show plainly the strain of battle these nazis bear unmistakably the mark of utter defeat swiftly along the ancient via casalina the surge of allied power rolls north whether the nazis retreat further or choose to stand and fight the enemy has taken his worst defeat in the entire italian campaign it was not entirely bloodless german and italian forces had been fighting in spain general franco had revolted against the republican government he invited and received german and italian aid the duly elected government received some russian aid the democracies evolved a formula of non-intervention but it is broadside here was opportunity for a dress rehearsal for full-scale war an excellent chance to test new weapons and tactics the spaniards were the guinea pigs men women and children it was a long war ended finally by hunger hitler was not content with austria at munich he had said his theory of race and blood demanded the incorporation of all german-speaking peoples into the reich there were those in england france and the united states who did not think this an unreasonable demand hitler called upon czechoslovakia to surrender the sudetenland that part of czechoslovakia heavily populated by germans france was bound by treaty to the republic created under the old austrian empire france and soviet russia were linked in a defensive pact great britain's destiny was linked with that of france so hitler prime minister chamberlain of great britain mussolini premier dalladiere france met in munich and because the democracies of europe were hungry for peace removed a thorn from hitler's side the czech army and the little maginot line europe breathed the sigh of relief mussolini's people were jubilant they wanted peace hitler rolled into the sudetenland his people were jubilant here was the miracle man they said a man who conquered with words this was a new kind of war a delightful war bands and flowers and parades a smiling war a lovely war not a shot fired not a man hurt nor a woman nor a child war was a holiday hitler told his people he was content he wanted no more territory he guaranteed the integrity of the mutilated czechoslovak republic thereupon he paused to rest and then marched into prague the republic was destroyed the democracies had lost a valuable ally italy's reward was albania again bloodless slight resistance now europe realized the hunger of the aggressors could not be appeased on april 14 1939 president roosevelt appealed to hitler and mussolini for a 10-year guarantee of peace and hitler mocked as he called the role of his future victims eastland robbing sweden denmark netherlands berlin hospital ireland country portugal spain istanbul luxembourg hitler had signed a treaty of friendship with poland he had given poland a slice of czech territory and now it was poland's turn to ascend the sacrificial altar the democracies had pledged themselves to come to the aid of poland and then hitler executed what seemed at the time a master political stroke having come to power as the savior of germany from communism having gained support in certain circles of the democracies as the slayer of the red dragon having built his entire system of alliances upon a worldwide anti-communist crusade hitler sent his foreign minister von ribentrope to moscow maxime litvinov's policy of collective security had been scrapped at munich now russia and germany signed a treaty of friendship hitler's propaganda machine hummed for even in a dictatorship masses of men and women must be prepared for war but poland stood firm great britain stood firm hitler didn't declare war on september 1st 1939 he struck without warning which is the way of the aggressor you will soon see hitler's own photographic record of the blitz in poland the formula is simple enough first choose your victim an army still living in the past few planes fewer tanks outmoded guns and outmoded tactics choose an army relying upon courage rather than machines then mass your bombers load with your biggest bomb strike strike without warning destroy his inadequate air force on the ground blast those who escape out of the air strike again with your bombers wave after wave again and again strike at the railroads or then the victim cannot mobilize it cannot move men and supplies its armies are isolated strike on the sea so the executive committee of the united nations conference at san francisco secretary statinius presiding considers resolutions for the world security organization as europe's war ends molotov of russia prime minister king of canada evan of australia and anthony eaton of great britain join in the session victory in europe re-emphasizes the task of building an effective world organization dedicated to that task the united nations chief delegates rise for a moment of meditation north of san francisco at the huge boeing aircraft plant in seattle washington american workers also stay on the job hearing the good news of germany's surrender these men and women completed an extra b-29 super fortress they cheer the great bomber on its way to blast japan from now on the only target for united states military might the home front gets behind the seventh warbond drive symbolized in this statue of the raising of the flag over iwo jima the same flag that flew over iwo jima now goes up in new york with victory in europe all new york's lights go on again and broadway once again becomes the great white way for the first time since pearl harbor the dome of the united states capital in washington is illuminated signaling the unconditional surrender of germany lighted 2 is the statue of liberty familiar to millions of immigrants travelers and returning servicemen with liberty as a symbol the war against japanese aggression and brutality now goes forward with new vigor and undivided power a four-year-old chinese boy war orphaned is found by american soldiers members of the 14th air force in china lost from among the thousands who fled japanese offensives tired and hungry he is still wary of strangers but a village elder persuades the little fellow to go along with the americans the soldiers adopt him with permission of their commanding officer a captain can be stern but here he's won over completely by the little boy he's in the army now and the first thing a recruit gets is a ban it doesn't take long for him to learn the military life as company mascot he rates the title of assistant first sergeant this unit of flying tiger fame gives him the name of little flying tiger joe mess call he pitches in with a will and in company review little flying tiger joe is a model soldier forward march as the column moves up little joe brings up the rear proud of his new life in the army and proud of his american friends wounded veterans of okinawa are carried off the hospital ship uss comfort at a pacific base as the comfort reaches port despite damage caused by a japanese plane attack one side of the mercy ship is smashed 29 helpless wounded men are killed by the fnatic japanese pilot the unarmed plainly marked hospital ship was brilliantly lighted when attacked although wounded the victims survived the fierce battle for okinawa island now they are buried in a common ceremony completing her first airplane trip four hours and 15 minutes from her home in missouri mrs martha truman arrives in washington to join her son president harry s truman this is the first time she has seen him since he assumed the nation's highest office at the white house the president's mother poses for pictures with the truman family after the president had designated the day as one of victory prayers throughout the land with mrs truman and their daughter mary the president also makes the day one of reunion for the nation's first family near hamburg germany general sir bernard montgomery receives german surrender offers from general admiral hans von friederberg affecting northern germany and denmark the germans as always seek to divide the allies offering surrender of three armies to britain and america but not to russia currently refused by montgomery they have one alternative the unconditional surrender of all their northern forces among themselves the germans discussed the unyielding allied terms before returning to their own lives 25 hours later they return these historic pictures record their unconditional surrender of one million german troops von friedeberg signs the instrument of surrender followed by german general kinsel montgomery signs fighting is now ended in northern germany and denmark two days later colonel general alfred yodel nazi chief of staff arrives at general eisenhower's schoolhouse headquarters in rounds france to surrender all remaining german forces to the allies general walter bedell smith eisenhower's chief of staff gives the germans the surrender terms they are unconditional like those of alexander in italy and montgomery and north germany general yodel with admiral friederberg at his left and major general philum octania's right signs the surrender documents represents the red army the delegates of the four powers russia britain france and the united states now signed general yodel represents admiral dernetz who assumed control after the fall of berlin after conditional last words he delivers germany's armies to the victorious allies the allied delegates listen in silence the war in europe ends as roosevelt churchill and stalin had promised to tehran and yalda in smashing defeat and unconditional surrender general eisenhower received the historic surrender pens this is the glorious hour the war against germany is won to all the forces of the united nations a thankful world says well done yeah that was great i mean the the newsreel narrator tone um it's almost like i wish i had an app that would read all my emails like that guy so i'd be enthusiastic about
