come on guys let's go come on you guys we'll get them this time for sure yes it's them those sneaky symptoms of sickness we all know so well a runny nose a headache and sneezing all the signs of the common cold let's go who are these enemies you've probably guessed they are germs which cause colds and flew the invisible [Music] invaders these sneaky cold and flu germs are always ready to attack our body [Music] [Music] but fortunately in our body we have defenders which protect us against such germs [Music] when cold germs invade the body [Applause] [Music] white blood cells and antibodies rush to the body's defense [Music] our bodies are used to fighting off germs this is normal and natural but sometimes too many germs gang up on the body [Applause] [Music] hey [Applause] while the germs invading our body are winning we become sick but what are these germs which cause us to get colds and flu while most germs are microscopic one-celled forms of life such as bacteria the germs which cause colds and flu are many many times smaller [Music] the various cold and flu invaders belong to the group of tiniest germs called viruses how small are they [Music] well if you put seven hundred thousand cold viruses in a row they would be only one centimeter long yet each individual virus is a harmful speck of trouble viruses are on the borderline of life neither living nor non-living unlike regular living things viruses can't move by themselves digest food or grow but they are filled with life-forming chemicals yet they cannot reproduce more viruses by themselves so they must attack living cells and force them to do the work how do they do this well once in the body a virus can't overpower just any cell each type of virus can only attach itself to the one type of cell which has a matching part to its own surface [Music] once the virus breaks into the cell the real mischief begins it releases its chemicals to enslave the cell the invading virus takes over the cell's machinery and forces it to reproduce more viruses in about 20 minutes the cell has copied the virus hundreds of times [Music] such rapid growth often causes the cell to burst releasing the mass of new viruses and the cell is left behind to die the hundreds of new viruses now go on to destroy more cells and multiply again and again if the spreading viruses manage to kill enough cells we become sick which illness we get and where we feel bad depends on the type and location of the cells killed cold viruses for example attack the lining of our nose and throat this causes a runny nose sneezing and other cold symptoms flu also known as influenza is a different illness caused by another group of viruses as with colds flu affects the breathing system but without so many sniffles and sneezes instead it comes on suddenly with chills and makes you feel sore all over and weak oh i don't feel too good me neither what should we do let's go home the best thing for colds or flu are to stay at home and take bed rest aspirin and plenty of liquids bed rest helps the body to save its energy for fighting off the illness here's some aspirin aspirin reduces fever and helps the aches and soreness to go away here's your juice craig plenty of liquids put back the body liquids drained out by the illness it is important that you take proper care of yourself otherwise a simple cold or the flu could turn into pneumonia a more serious chest illness when you have a cold or the flu be fair to others but these illnesses are so easy to pass on sneezing can spray tiny particles containing cold viruses clear across a room so cover your sneezes and coughs to keep from sending these invisible invaders to others and use paper tissues that can be thrown away it may surprise you that many colds are spread by the hands cold viruses can be passed to the hands from a sniffly nose then anything touched gets some of these germs the germs are left behind for other people to pick up without knowing it so when you have a cold you should wash your hands more often than usual when you are well you will want to guard against getting sick again eat properly and get plenty of rest to keep up your body defenses against germs and keep that twinkle in your eyes really good eggs try some no also it is not wise to share eating or drinking utensils but this may help germs spread hi guys can you come with us and take flu shots if the doctor thinks they're necessary you may be surprised to learn that common colds are not caused by cold or wet weather colds can only be caused by cold viruses part of the reason there are more colds in winter is because people are closer together in enclosed areas this allows cold viruses to be shared more easily you need to give your body all the help you can because the body has to work hard to defeat germ invaders and keep you well how does the body do this well when cold viruses or other germs have taken over the body it calls for reinforcements if the virus is new to the body new weapons are specifically built to combat these invading strangers these weapons are new antibodies [Music] and prevent the viruses from invading more of the body the new antibodies are made to fit only the new invaders each locks onto an invading germ and keeps it from doing any further harm then certain white blood cells destroy the trapped invaders [Music] [Applause] usually the antibodies and the white blood cells fight until the invading germs are defeated and the infection is wiped out once antibodies are made for a particular germ they remain ready to defend the body if those germs ever invade again so if you want to strengthen your chances of getting fewer colds flus and other illnesses always keep up your defenses remember we are always surrounded by germs they better not let their defenses down or boy we're gonna get them and man are they gonna be [Music] [Music] sick hello i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um some people pointed out in the comments that this film was awesome i concur um really it tickles a couple of different things in my brain one is having a bunch of kids dressed in armor and having a giant castle-like structure and they are playing fake war um definitely captured my interest as that was a current theme it was a prominent theme when i was a kid the other thing is really the interesting way that it explains the concepts of viruses and bacteria and how your immune system tries to fight them i showed this at a medical film symposium screening with another film collector who showed absolutely horrifying films provided the kids stuff and he provided the stuff that was meant for doctors and somebody passed out during one of his films um anyways uh a lot of people have been asking to uh see this and um so i acquired a bunch of i collect old educational films if you didn't know by now uh and um i just made a deal with a company that owns coronet films which is one of the big educational film companies and so um a couple of weeks ago i got 13 pallets of films and been slowly going through them it's gonna take two years at least to go through them uh and what i found in there and i'm still like again i'm digging um there's a lot of materials that were what are called a b roll materials that were edited uh so that they could be printed with a soundtrack to make a negative that that would be the master and so uh they don't have any soundtrack um i also have found a lot of just kind of what they call stock library stuff so it's just like random shots that they just held on to then i also found a bunch of shots that were for a very specific films and i tried to show you one hygiene for girls on my telecini but the splices were very problematic so i had to repair them and i actually scanned them on my scanner and so i have a file that i'm going to show you um let me edit the text here so this is raw footage i mean you can tell that there's like slates there's you know flubs um there's no audio so it's silent so here's hygiene for girls enjoy so i'm going to interject a little bit here um the film is silent and one of the ways you can tell visually that it's silent is that you see uh perfs uh on both sides and um traditionally when you have a film print you have optical uh sound on the right side and this doesn't have any anything there sometimes you can be fooled and there can be a magnetic stripe that is actually beyond the right purple but that was not the case here um this was shot i mean a lot of these coronet films weren't shot with sync sound so they basically weren't recording dialogue uh so this there was no sound recorded when she's putting deodorant on her pits but um a lot of times that sound was recorded on magnetic tape and then it was synced later and i haven't run across any of those any of those tapes or those films at this point there's a makeshift slate i haven't seen the original version of this film but the actress in this is in more dates for k um plays the girl who spends every minute of her classroom time trying to secure dates so you're listening to me click and type um yeah at some point i hope to find the actual print of this to see what was used and what wasn't and is this real and there's two reels of this uh so this is what was originally from the camera so they shot on kodachrome and so this is the crispest the most crisp most focused least run uh material there's a little bit of dirt on it but there's no scratches because it has never really been through a projector which is why this is this collection is really fascinating for me because visually it's beautiful oops somebody um either didn't move the lens it's not a thumb because i think you'd have to work pretty hard to get the thumb it could also be that they're doing a special effect here that they'll do a super imposition with something else cornet made a bunch of films i was just looking to see i'm trying to figure out actually how many coordinate films were made and in one year in the 60s i think they made 680 films in one year or in one decade so that's like sixty eight films a year which is more than one a week um and um if you read mental hygiene by ken smith he kind of anecdotally talks about how they were they had two sound stages that they were actively shooting back and forth back and forth back and forth i mean it was very much an assembly line um which is why some people view these as kind of really stale and stodgy because there wasn't the scripts were very um you know they just cranked them out uh in films made by a company like centron made far less films but they tend to have a little bit more heart um although you know you might ask like how much heart does a multiplication film need um but i would say that you know cornet and encyclopedia britannica were the most they made the most educational films i think and so one of the things to kind of think about i'm just going to keep talking because this film is silent one of the things can i think about is like why why would you need to show a hygiene film in school um what's the point of that and and basically the point is that um you're trying to um essentially uh educate kids who have not gotten a decent education from home for whatever reason and you're trying to say like hey because i know that stinky kids make stinky adults and stinky adults don't work really well in the um in the social machine and um so this is trying to get the heads up and say like hey girls you need to you know clean yourself um i mean i showed uh hygiene for boys um which was a sev it was a 1960s film and it basically was making the same excuse of like look you need to wash your fits um not think at your face wash your hair brush your teeth and then use the analogy of working on a car uh behind me you can hear that wearing sound i'm rewinding so we can set up the next film you [Music] so a lot of times there were cornet sets oh i think we're done there i'm gonna continue talking as i set up this film uh there were coronet sets uh usually classrooms bedrooms hallways and classrooms schools um maybe living rooms but i think that bathroom set is so elaborate that i feel like they probably shut that on location and i've certainly talked to people who have appeared in educational films and talked about how a film company came to their school or in one case came to their house and actually shot at their house all right so i hope that was educational i don't know i mean it is av geeks so we do geek out about av so you know what you came in for um so uh i can't remember what this next film is oh yeah so this next film uh i showed another one in this series it features uh it's like a little narrative vignette that deals with some sort of emotional um subject this one features a young larry wilcox uh and another guy who looks familiar whose name i can't remember um it's not uh eric estrada though he looks eric estrada-esque um but then after we watch it then vote bridges uh sips some coffee and talks to us about what we just saw so here is but jack was a good driver now i shall help them yes for a moment of prayer oh lord be taken to thy hand thy brother jack for safe keeping amen this concludes the service [Music] hey ed hey look if you need to get there before me how about waiting outside okay so we going together okay i guess i guess we really have to go on [Music] well we said we were now expecting us yeah especially jack's mom you see the way she looked at me like i could say something this somehow make it all right come on bob no really i mean what do you [Music] well but you saw him what a nice guy he was yeah i don't know look i can't handle this sort of thing come on bob it's just a condolence call like last year when mrs keller died and went to visit her sister yeah yeah i remember jack was with us his arm was still in the sling hey hey ed look look didn't it seem to you like jack was always getting hurt i mean like twisting his ankle and spraining in his wrist well sure but jack was an athlete man yeah but how about the way he was pushing himself i mean he drove himself so hard like like winning wasn't enough like it didn't satisfy him anyway that's the way it was before hey bob what are you trying to say yeah jack was a good driver he knew that little car and he knew the road so so what happened in the middle of a sunny day there was no rain no fog there's no reason he should have went off that road oh come on that curves a death trap he was going too fast i measured the skid marks jack never went too fast he went off that road because he changed his mind he changed his mind about what look at it at the last second our friend jack copped out he put on the brakes you're crazy no i don't think so ed look uh i've been thinking about this a lot the past few days if you're trying to say that jack that that wasn't an accident you're crazy there's no proof if that's what you mean besides where's the note what note was the no don't people always even note i don't know i don't think so but maybe there was a node maybe they just haven't found it yet maybe his mom or somebody did find it and decided not to let anybody know bob you got to get these ideas out of your head right now before we go over there now don't worry like even if i was sure about something i wouldn't tell them what's that house what do you mean well i was only there once but everything was so neat and clean and cold his mom brought me on a coke and you know it's like like i was afraid to put it on the coffee table like it might make a mark and this old man came in and he asked jack about his schoolwork he was polite and all that but it was like he was interviewing him for a job like there were strangers jack and i never talked about it but i never went back there again so what look my father's like that too and my mother's always running around cleaning up that doesn't mean i'm gonna drive off a cliff how do you know oh come on bob oh really i mean how do you know what it takes to cure yourself listen haven't you ever been uh i'm kind of depressed maybe the thought just sort of popped into your mind no well maybe once or twice but not seriously it's more like i might be walking down the street i might think about robbing a bank or something but i know i'm not going to do it but what the hell are we talking about anyway you know to listen to you think everybody was going to commit suicide you got nothing but death in your mind and look i really think you did it and i think you're letting your imagination go wild what do you got some skid marks his mom was a good housekeeper and his father asked him about his grades now what is that it was more than that i mean jack had changed a lot in the past few months look you were with him didn't you notice it was sure he's getting quieter moodier but jack was always into himself anyway i figured he was studying more know his grades were down he just flunked his bio midterm did he tell you that no he didn't exactly tell me but i brought back some records and the exam was down in a stack big fat f you know jack always aced any kind of science did you mention it no you know i figured i figured if you want to talk about it would have brought it out i guess i figured wrong you know i think i think maybe you might have put that exam paper in there on purpose like maybe he wanted me to ask him about it oh great what are we supposed to do read his mind psych him out make like a shrink come off it and we're his best friends i mean we should have been able to see something was wrong and put it all together and what i don't know asked him about it or told somebody anything he did something else too remember that nikon i've been trying to buy from him for the past year last saturday he came over he didn't even call he just just dropped in he handed it to me and said i could have it for nothing so i asked him why he put me on he said no asking why he said why not i asked him if maybe he was losing interest in photography he said yeah yeah among other things was trying to tell me something i was too damn stupid to tune in what do you think i uh i think we should have compared notes yeah what's the matter saturday night uh jack patty and julie and i went to a drive-in it was a comedy and everybody laughed except for jack you wanted to turn the sound down because he said it was only funny if he couldn't hear what they were saying well later we went over to my house and had a couple of beers and we started talking about school and what we wanted to be and jack said he didn't want to be anything and then he said uh he sometimes felt like killing himself and i guess i i figured that anybody that talks about killing themselves isn't gonna do it and i told him i said you're talking that way because you're loaded and then i actually laughed at him hey look there's no way for you to know i mean like you said i was just guessing maybe everything we said was true or maybe it really was an accident yeah i guess hey come on we're running late hey bob yeah if you get that ahead of me wait up okay yeah okay [Music] so [Music] what do you say to people when someone dies and especially when you have reason to think that he or she may have committed suicide one thing we wanted to get at in the film was not what you say but rather what you feel when someone close to you has chosen to end his or her life does that grief differ from what you feel when there's no question of suicide some degree of regret is often a part of grief somehow we might have treated the person better we might have been more appreciative more sensitive to his or her needs for bob and ed though it's not just a vague sense of regret but rather a heavy feeling of guilt now put yourself in their place a friend has died in an accident but now a number of things your friend did and said in the days just before his death seem in hindsight like clues like disguised cries for help from someone considering suicide would you have recognized the clues suppose at the time bob had recognized jack's behavior as suicidal what could he have done what should he have done asked jack outright if that's what he was thinking about brought it out in the open even at the risk of looking like a fool or offending him gone to someone else with his apprehensions if so to whom a parent a teacher suppose your friend actually said he was considering suicide would you take it seriously or would you figure that he was just grandstanding or letting off pressure and that those who talk don't do it the truth is many who talk about killing themselves go on and do it how common is it to think about suicide ed admits he has once or twice but he knew he wouldn't actually do it how does a person know when to worry about such thoughts it's not always easy to know to what extent death was intentional can there be degrees of intention what about the sick person who won't seek medical help do activities that involve a deliberate flirtation with death like grand prix racing bullfighting skydiving have a sort of suicidal element in them suicide's a heavy subject many people would rather not discuss it and you might wonder why we bring it up well suicide is a leading cause of death in our society particularly among teenagers to us that seem reason enough so scott columbia that's who it is thanks people uh in the um comments for uh mentioning that um and he was in a bunch of stuff himself caddyshack um i i didn't look at the imdb because people mentioned some other things but i'm sure somebody saw that was like you know larry's good but we only we need somebody who's a partner who's brunette maybe you know of italian descent um yeah that's that's the team that's what made chips so um also kind of a public service announcement type of thing uh if you are you know depression is a real thing and uh if you are feeling lonely uh and feel like suicide is a thing but to consider uh please reach out there's you're not alone there's a lot of people that feel this way especially nowadays but uh depression is a real thing it's a medical condition it is not because you're not emotionally strong because your parents were hard on you it is bad brave brain chemistry so please reach out i would hate to lose any of you please know that you are loved by somebody um and reach out if you need help there's nothing wrong with that all right um so i mistakenly said that the film uh it's uh nice to have a wolf around the house it's so nice to have a wolf around the house was made by the same people that made the point i was very very wrong but i did find another film that uh the filmmakers made called louis james hate school and this is a really great film uh first time i showed it to a bunch of people they loved it and requested to see it again when i did a best of show so here's louis james [Music] what a wonderful time in a child's life learning about places people and things learning new ideas learning to get along with each other learning to work together and to play together school days wonderful days and unless your name happens to be louis g louis james hated school in fact louis james hated school so much that one day at recess no more pencils no more books no more cafeteria cooks louis james skipped school so much that he never learned to read or spell like his friends who needs to learn those dumb things i'm gonna get a job today and make a lot of money i'll be so busy i won't need to read books and spell stuff and so louis james headed for town to find a job he looked for the employment agency where the man gave out jobs but because he couldn't read he made a mistake right away this must be the place are you the man who gives out jobs no i'm the man who sells groceries can't you read said the grocer the guy you're looking for is down the street two doors i knew that why louis james i was just checking on you and so louie james went to see mr clinker the head job person ah you say you want a job huh you bet i do mr clinker i want a job in the worst way louis james waited patiently while mr clinker shuffled through a pile of papers can you read and spell young man does a bear growl in the woods of course i can read and spell those are two of my best things louie james lied again here's a good one abc skywriting company needs a pilot to fly the plane and write smoke messages in the air it's a snap said louis here i james louie james didn't have an easy time his boss was in the plane with him and he was getting worried all right kid don't you see that sign it says to go up or back [Music] [Music] oh there's no co-pilot oh dear your job is to write eat crispy cookies oh [Music] yes that's not how you spell eat crispy cookies louie james boss was getting madder and madder until finally you are fired whoever heard of a skyrider who can't smell who wants a dumb job like that anyway who wants to be able to spell crispy crispy cookies uh flying doesn't seem to agree with me is there something else i can do something without spelling it's such a bore mr clinker looked through his files here's one someone to drive an ambulance an ambulance driver that's great lights washing siren on baby now that's for me uh-huh try not to make so much noise and uh good luck [Music] get me to the hospital as quickly as you can young man i hurt i uh don't know the way just follow the signs you ding dong you can read can't you and one other thing young man turn on the siren how read the direction right there it says pull to turn on siren the lever check the gas use as louis james drove down the street he saw there were signs at every corner but he could not tell what they said sorry but i can't read what whoever heard of an ambulance driver who couldn't read get out of bribe myself and she did [Music] so you can't read a spell huh hello who wants to drive a dumb ambulance anyway it's up to you driving ambulances is sick i suggest you go back to school and forget about a job for not oh no yet i hate school i'll never go back just get me a job with no reading or spelling there aren't many of those around there must be something i can do yeah give this one a shot what uh is it [Music] night watchman in a haunted house i don't like this place a lot it's eerie it's even icy nosy and throaty i don't care for it a bit i think there's something very strange going on here probably a tale that is yet to be told [Music] [Music] have you got something else something a little less scary there you go chief you can be a taster in a spinach factory yeah i'm not too crazy about spin it and go back to school i like spinach a lot better than school [Music] at least i thought i did makes your teeth green [Music] try this one snake snuggler in a sideshow what does a snake snuggler do whatever the snake wants him to do [Music] i hate that song play something else i don't know anything else you mean you don't read music either leave your resume at the desk next louis james got a job in a zoo as a tooth and fang brusher yeah but he didn't like it too much i gotta get a toothbrush with a longer handle wasn't the job any good uh yeah the job was good but their breath was bad he tried a lot of other jobs 11 321 11 322 i hate this job eleventh i lost count one he was a pee picker a pickle pattern and a prune peeler until finally louie james said i quit i quit i quit louie james ran all the way back through town i'll see you in a few years mr clinker i'm going back to school you're a smart boy louie james a smart boy good luck here [Music] uh how do you spell cat and no no wait a minute hold on hold up uh c a t cat all his old classmates gathered around louis james and asked the same question over and over where the heck have you been hanging out just hanging out [Music] [Music] wonderful i think i'll go to the library hi miss hawkins i'm back remember me [Music] luigi [Music] mmm so you know it has a similar vibe to uh so um it's so wonderful to have a or so nice to have a wolf around the house um very much enjoy it uh and it's funny you know it's funny for kids and it's funny for adults too and that's that's a good sign for an educational film i think and it does you know have a message which is um stay in school learn how to read and then you won't have to be stuck with a crappy job although a snake snuggler sounds fascinating to me um and i'm sure it sounded fascinating to some kids and also being a sky writer is also very fascinating all right uh time for another film and let me just say uh thank you so much for uh the coffee people have been donating coffee as a way to say thank you to av geeks and um i needed it today last night we had crazy flooding and so the basement here got a little wet and so my wife and i had to uh shop back until the wee hours um none of the equipment or films were endangered um but it just i don't know big pain um so coffee helps with times like that and so thank you so much for your coffee and for your attention all right uh this next film uh let me just go ahead and switch over that is what we call depending on who's describing it it's either a leader lady or a china girl or there's also leader lads and this is something that's put at the beginning of a film for the lab to kind of process to make sure the colors are right and you can tell that the colors are a little off because the film is faded a little bit this film is called the cow and the sprite enjoy in ireland there once was a happy sprite named jonio grimm now people can't see his price except when he wants them to of course johnny wants us to see him as happy as they can be for my happiness look at the sky now and the tree ah it's a beautiful day and the grass this is green is oh well i'm a sprite what's this why it's a grey glitter button oh what unlucky straight i am and how happy i am to find it it's the very thing i was needing to sew on my coat and here it is a big bright button oh it's the surly cow now the silly cow was another stripe a fearsome creature who frightened some people whenever she lets them see her [Music] good morning what have you got to be so happy about i found a button see where in the grass it's a pretty button i want it you're welcome to it huh if it'll make you happy of course it will i want the button put it down here did you say my friend there now i have the button and you have nothing so you can't be happy anymore oh yes i can i can enjoy the things around me that's good yes it is because you won't get the button back no say no more i don't need to have anything to make me happy oh go jump over the moon you do too no i don't you do i don't need a thing to make me happy you do too i don't you do i don't you do i do ah you do too it appears we do not see eye to eye in this matter no we don't you show me you just show me someone who's happy without having anything and i'll where where oh move now you take granny she doesn't have a button to her name but she's happy with nothing oh she is [Music] happy with nothing is she then let's give her something she might like a fine big ham and after she's had it a while we'll see how happy she'll be without it all right shall i change myself into a harm no i'll do it [Music] now that's a very good license here she comes well she can't see me i'm a sprite percy me what's that ah the sweet venon roses she doesn't even notice you how could she see me off at the side of the road she saw the roses well fetch her back all this magic for nothing mercy me i must be looking at the road or i'd be treading on the wii sprites well what's this a flying big ham lying in the middle of the road and who do you belong to there isn't a body inside and you couldn't have fallen out of the sky still it looks all right and since no one's here it must be mine it's happy i am to be finding this ham and i just wrap it up in the shawl and take it home with me friend cow it's me that made her happy let's see how she feels without it i'll change myself into a lump of lead and oh then she'll cry will you do that now well this is the great way to this ham hey look what's this a lump of lead wonder how do you do i'm sure and isn't this a fine thing to have a love for that i can sell it for a fine price it's happy i am to be having this lump and dead you see she makes the best of what she has so she's happy maybe but if she didn't have even the lads how about an old soul she couldn't sell that then she cried you don't know the likes of granny i'll turn myself into an old stone oh will you do that now ah it's warm for this time of day but it's happy i am that i got this all for this hunk of lead well now what's this an old grass stone my eyes are playing me tricks i thought you were a piece of that but what a fine thing this is but i was just needing a stone about this size to hold open my door [Music] ooh she must be crazy oh she's white she can be happy without having a thing then i'll be myself and give her a price will you do that now ah you did no she won't have a thing it won't matter the particles oh this stone weighs more than the lead but how fine size it is for holding open me door it's the surly coal now isn't that fine most folks never see a sprite at all so i'm happy i am to be having the sight of a stripe and mercy me there's no stone there at all now watch this you see she doesn't have a thing i'm watching but then i won't have to be dragging it behind me it's all in the bed you see huh wait a second oh wait till she sees the door ah there's a gap and hole in me very best charles from dragonit along the road that's the fine thing i must say now she'll cry what why the hole came right in the middle i can throw it over me head and wear it for the coat now wasn't that clever and it's happy i am to be having a new thing to wear you see people can be happy by enjoying whatever is around them well i said i'd jump over the moon [Music] what do you know she made it i guess you're right you don't have to have a thing to be happy it's a grand thing to know could we be traveling this road together i think we could i'll give you a ride thank you kindly oh i'm as happy as i can be for my happiness depends on me a coronet fantasy um more like what we call nightmare fodder um i think that this is one of those films that can go either way where a kid's gonna appreciate it or it's gonna be horrified by the sprite devil puppet um i i think that there's when i've shown films with marionettes there's a level of uh there's certain people that are really scared of them and there's a lot of anxiety about them um so there you go account is bright um uh so one of the films that i showed as a backup during one of the backup shows that i had put together when i was at the beach uh that didn't get shown but then it got accidentally shown and then it got accidentally shown again some people missed it but there's been a request for uh one of the films it's a silent film but it's it's uh still a pretty amazing film i'm gonna go ahead and start it and set it up and all that stuff um if i can find it here it is um this is the ohio power company event party even though i missed my um didn't do it right in the description um so this is silent this is basically hell movie footage um and um so it's set up on a tripod and it's people uh going into some sort of hall um and this is similar to there are some itinerant films where people would be shown exiting a school or a factory or whatever as a way of um basically trying to get as many faces on the screen as possible so that when the filmmaker returned and booked a theater like those people that were in that movie would show up and watch it especially if their kid was in it um so this is definitely documenting people coming to some sort of party i got this film in a um it was a batch of films on ebay and it just said basically box of films from about electricity and so um and that was back in the early days and so i i got it and pretty inexpensively and in it was uh electric heating electric heating goes to school which i've shown which is basically an ad for um adding electric heating to your school versus a boiler and um then one called helicopter erect it's called erecting power um pylons that one i haven't digitized yet and it's basically a helicopter like helping to erect these giant um high tension lines towers but this one by far is the most amazing and i've shown it a lot when i can i actually did a home movie day in albania and it was difficult because i we weren't really clear on how to tell people in albania what home movies were and so i had a bunch of stuff that i was just showing and eventually people got it um because we just didn't know how to translate the con the term or the concept of home movies mostly because albania was kind of its own little communist country okay now it's going to get a little interesting here um so albania didn't most people didn't have home movie equipment and shot didn't shoot home movies unless they were very rich of course the secret police did shoot a bunch of home movie footage for surveillance purposes but the average citizen there was no kodak dealer there was no person that was selling cameras so but anyways i showed this there and it was a hit and people started understanding what it was wanting and then somebody brought home video that they had shot of the streets of albania um so this seems very generic as far as you know here's a bunch of people going into this hall is this an event what is this and there's certainly a reason i'm showing this there is a payoff an unbelievable payoff all right i'm going to leave it to you to try to figure out in the comments what the hell is going on and everybody has a fine dinner after that traumatic experience has dinner so i'm guessing that this was some sort of hazing event or some sort of congratulations for serving this many years or something um there was no documentation with it beyond what was written on the can which was ohio power company that party 1950. um so there you go that's that's why i like watching uh home movies that's why i participate in home movie day every year uh and we're doing home movie day virtually on september 12th and i'm getting people locally to bring home movies to the av geeks archive we'll digitize them and then show them remotely so there you go oh yeah bohemian grove somebody commented probably very similar to that goofiness another initiation hazing thing i've seen is when there are films that were shot by people in the navy when they go over the equator there is a ritual a ludicrous ritual involving dressing up as neptune and drag and these things and the people that have gone across the equator for the first time they have to go through some sort of elaborate absurd ritual that my dad went through actually when he was on the forest hall all right um thanks again everybody for tuning
