[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so the people of ancient palestine the land of the bible lived mostly in cities or towns the jerusalem of today gives us a good clue as to what cities of biblical times might have looked like they were surrounded by immense stone walls and could be entered only through massive well-guarded gates [Music] towns were smaller than cities and we're without the benefit of great walls to protect them against enemy attack bethlehem the birthplace of our savior is a good example of other towns often were no more than a small group of houses and mud huts many of them can still be seen today there was yet another type of living place the tent called the house of hair which was home to the wandering nomadic people in the land of the bible today much of the life and customs followed by the dwellers of cities towns and houses of hair has remained practically unchanged since biblical times [Music] the love of bright clothing seems to be a characteristic of people who live in a drab background and the people of the bible lands are no exception throughout the centuries each town has retained its own particular style and possibly no other is more beautiful than that worn by the women of ramallah [Music] in other towns two such colorful garments are a common sight at the well for it has always been the meeting place for women here they go about their important daily chore of providing water for their families [Music] of all the natural resources in the land of the bible none has ever been more precious than water simply because it is so scarce the biblical farmer returning home from his fields witnessed a scene much like this one his women folk preparing vegetables for the evening meal chatting possibly talking over the news they heard that afternoon at the well beans lentils cucumbers squash peas lettuce onions all were grown in the biblical garden and are still being raised today man in palestine has been farming and cultivating his land for almost 10 000 years [Music] during the spring months the reaping of the grain begins the farmer grabs a handful of grain then cuts it with a sickle and implements so ancient it dates back to prehistoric times once the grain is cut it must be taken to the threshing floor and most of the time camels are used for the carrying at times the loads they bear are so great they present the comical appearance of huge bundles of grain walking about on legs [Music] the threshing floor is usually a large level area where the ground is quite hard the threshing board is generally about four feet long and on the underside sharp stones are embedded in the wood it is the action of the board along with the feet of the animals that loosens the kernels around and around they go in biblical times children considered it great fun to ride the board and thousands of years later children of the bible land still enjoy it standing on the sidelines is a substitute waiting to get into action and a spectator a little too young to join in the fun after the boys and the donkeys are finished the farmer begins winnowing the grain [Music] as he tosses bunches into the air the breeze blows away the straw or chaff letting the heavier kernels of grain fall back to the floor later on it is swept up and put into baskets from either wheat or barley bread is made and there are several favorite ways of baking it with one the dough is placed on hot stones in a small [Music] oven but the nomad women prepare it in another manner bread has always been a basic necessity for human existence in the bible lands and christ used it as a symbol when he emphasized our need for bread for the soul as well as bread for the body perhaps nothing has changed so little as the life led by the nomad it remains much as it was during the days of the patriarchs [Music] tents woven from goat's hair very similar to those we see today were made by paul for tent making was his profession [Music] the nomad is continually on the move leading his flocks in a never-ending search for grazing lands and water [Music] one of the ancient and interesting customs of these desert wanderers is their hospitality towards strangers a place to sleep food and drink no traveler arriving in their midst need ask for these coffee is the beverage served by the nomad of today after the coffee beans have been roasted in an iron skillet called a mamasa they are then ground into a powder this is done in a receptacle known as a june [Music] and each man has his own distinctly different rhythmic grinding action [Music] the nomad would lay down his life to defend a guest nowhere else in the world could a weary traveler be safer [Music] the products of the potter are as important to the people today as they were during biblical times [Music] excavations in the bible lands have unearthed countless examples of the potter's art some of these pieces date back thousands of years [Music] strange that one of the world's oldest crafts has changed so little during the passage of the centuries [Music] [Music] although most homes are fashioned from either stone or bricks made of clay the carpenter supplies the doors window frames roof beams and the simple furniture jesus was known to the people of nazareth as the carpenter and in his little shop jesus probably sat on the ground and went about his work much as these men are doing [Music] [Applause] [Music] although the roles of potter and carpenter are performed by men women too have their age-old handicrafts one of these is the weaving of colorful baskets and mats and the material used to make these household items comes from the dense thickets growing along the banks of the jordan river [Music] perhaps nothing else reminds us so much of biblical times and the life of our savior as the waters of the sea of galilee and the fishing nets being dried and mended along its shores most of our lord's disciples came from this region and four of them peter andrew james and john were fishermen today there are few fishing boats on the sea compared to jesus time and the many towns and villages that dotted the shoreline have disappeared [Music] yet here as elsewhere throughout the land we can open the door to the past and look in upon scenes that help us understand better the life and customs of the people who live in the land of the bible [Music] [Music] [Music] there you go family films um i've shown some family films in the past uh they tend to be um kind of dramatic narratives and this one was obviously a ethnographic film um kind of showing what it was like during biblical times although biblical times tend to span a millennia maybe i can't remember how long it goes but um yeah there you go uh hi i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to our lunchtime av geeks streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter educational films that was probably shown in a church for sunday school it's possible it might have made its way into a school you know because it's not really espousing specific religion it's just talking about biblical times times in the bible um but uh yeah hey i just wanted to say real thank you to griffin lady and william for buying me coffee there's a place that you can buy coffee right here and i needed it this morning i was uh i think i was kind of beat exhausted torn down and coffee boosted me up part of the coffee generation uh this next film is is interesting i like films that are for niche audiences and niche people and this one is very specific um it's for a psychiatrist and people in the mental health field on how to give a very specific test uh this is giving the rorschach test in 1921 dr hermann rorschach discovered that the way a person reacts to ink plots reflects the kind of person he is based upon this discovery dr rorschach introduced a new method of psychological testing hello won't you come in hello won't you sit down thank you cigarette yes thank you do you know anything about the rorschach test oh i i saw the cards once will it affect my answers i don't think so i'm going to show you these ink plots tell me what they look like tell me everything you see the administration of the test varies with the subject's age and background some must be gently encouraged and some must be tactfully restrained from talking too much well this might be a bat a strange kind of bat though is that right it's fine there are no right or wrong answers i guess that's all i can find in this one you see anything else take your time i'm not sure this might be a halloween mask and over here looks like the figure of a person is that enough the number of answers is not important let's try the next one shall we may i turn it around yes if you wish well these might be two scotty dogs they must have had a fight there's blood dripping from their paws i don't know what the red is up here am i supposed to look at all of it or just in parts anywhere at all just tell me everything you see i guess that's all these look like two waiters and they're bowing to one another and this might be a butterfly between them after the subject has seen the ten cards the inquiry begins interpretation depends largely on how the response was formed what part of the block was used did color shading and sense of movement contribute to the formation of the response the examiner tries to find out by discrete questioning i'd like to go over some of the things you saw to be sure i understand them you said this might be a bat what makes it look like one it's got wings sticking out on the side and a body in the center what made it seem like a strange kind of a bear it's got holes in it and the edges seem torn and what suggests the halloween mask the spaces cut out for the eyes and the mouth show me how you see the person here she is right here in the middle the hands held up as though she were praying well here are the scotties show me how you see them they have their paws together it's just part of the body back part seems to be missing any other reason they look like scotties well they're dark and fuzzy their heads are square they sure do look bloody tell me more about the waiters they seem to be bowing to one another very politely they've got on high stiff collars and high heels and why do you think of them as waiters well they're in formal dress black tuxedos what suggests the butterfly to you right here the way the wings are shaped if it were just an outline would it still be a butterfly i guess so but i've seen the bright red and tropical collections i see something else here now looks like two monkeys they have long tails the third phase is testing the limits in some cases the responses may not have been given in the usual or popular way this subject responded to shading in card two but not in card six i'm going to give these cards to you again i would like you to look through them and see if you can find one which may look like either a fair rug or an animal skin well the scotties here look like furry animals can you find another and have the heavier fur and this one seems a little darker that's fine goodbye thank you you have seen how a raw shock test is given here are some questions to think about why does the examiner remain passive during the first part of the test what is the function of the inquiry why did she test the limits what are your reactions to the giving of the test i like all the comments for this everybody was chiming in with what they thought the ink blots looked like and on youtube uh many of those were flagged for moderation oh youtube you are hilarious um i mean all were innocuous and joking um but uh yeah youtube was like what victims what dead bodies what oh uh i very much enjoy showing stuff like this to you guys um because this that was obviously not meant for public consumption that was meant for um people in that particular field and that's why i enjoy showing these films is because they kind of give you this sense of what um you know what those different niche uh professions deal with and what is the protocol and stuff like that and so it's really kind of a educational on a different level for a different reason um all right so this next film is uh another film that's made for a very specific group of people and that is people who um had to work abroad they worked for a corporation some big american conglomerate corporation and they spent a period of time several months or later or longer um in another country and this is actually i think and i have a series of these films that kind of deal with that and this i think is tour is like one of the last in the series it's called welcome home stranger and it's about how to acclimatize yourself back to being live in the united states so here we go [Music] it takes a while to adjust to a foreign country to make friends to make a home to become effective at work for many people the assignment is up very quickly some people feel they've barely settled in and they're already on their way home [Music] [Music] coming home there is excitement but there's also apprehension you're not the same person you were when you left your values have changed you have a new perspective on the world and on your country will there be a place for you and your company will your friends still be there what about home will it be the same as when you left coming back was a far worse culture shock than going very very hard much harder to come back than it was to go over traumatic to come back we're not prepared to have difficulty coming back to our own culture we've learned or most people do learn before they go out overseas something about the new place and they expect it to be difficult when they come back they've been separated from things that have gone on it's hard to make friends it's hard to break in it was hard to come back and this was a surprise to me you miss a great deal of what you've become accustomed to i mean your your your normal experiences now include a large element of the forum it's difficult for people to make use of their experience when they come back they want to talk about it they feel changed and they don't know where to put that that interest to work for them when you come back to the states no one really cares about that they're just not interested in your experiences and how neat it was and wherever it was that you lived people didn't know what to do with us had we said we were moving from fresno to the bay area people could have dealt with that oh my aunt sally lives in fresno you came from tokyo oh and that end of conversation all of your accumulated culture shock for the year is suddenly discharged when you get back to the united states and it is not as glorified as you have painted it in your memory there are a lot of myths that start developing while you're overseas about in quotes home it's better cleaner people come on time and it's really nicer and when you come back you find it's complex just as life was overseas we were just overwhelmed by how dirty the streets were in germany we've gotten very easily accustomed to the fact that streets were kept meticulously clean the the filth which we'd never particularly noticed before while we lived in boston really came as quite a surprise and not a pleasant one you always think that america's better yeah you always think that constantly nothing would be better than going home when you're overseas but then you get home and then you find out you want to go back overseas again i didn't want to leave because i had made all those new friends and everything and i had a friend that was um he cried when i left we were so good friends re-entry phase may be particularly trying for children because they've changed so much themselves in the time that they've been gone and kids get their sense of identity from their peers the others around them and if the children coming back from overseas don't know what's being shown on television and they don't know what other kids are wearing or what the current slang is they can be very quickly ostracized by groups and it can be a minor crisis in the life of those those children when you live overseas you get all of the tapes and records two years later so we think it's all great and it's really fun to get all that music finally it's brand new to us and we come home we find out we made a boo boo this is old stuff meeting friends overseas is the easiest thing in the entire world compared to coming home and trying to make friends for one thing you're not up on the the right things to do you don't know the right words to say your slang words in teenage teenage world slang words are very important and if you don't know how to put them in the right order you're in big trouble on returning kids that have had an overseas experience usually found they didn't fit in they weren't like everybody else they were more sophisticated more mature they'd seen a lot more um possibly more inquisitive about things just more worldly i do feel very different from people who haven't been outside the country before you don't want to talk too much about it because they think it's bragging they needed to know that when they got to got back nobody cared um that they were going to have to fit in that it was up to them to make it and you can sort of keep that experience but not flaunt it the spouse also goes through a considerable readjustment period in coming back similar to the one that he or she went through overseas families going abroad are frequently invited out as guests of honor they're treated very royally and when they go back home they're just like everyone else and it's hard getting used to being another person on the block kind of thing back home there is certainly a need to re-establish one's identity in the new community and be recognized for competence for being able to make a contribution in that community and it's hard for the spouse to to find that place again there's no support group when you move into a new community everybody has their established patterns their friends and you know there's not a whole lot of need for you you you have to every day spend your time today i'm going to meet i'm going to make an effort overseas people made the effort for you people everybody could remember being new and the struggles and so everybody was more than helpful the other thing is the paychecks and uh that sometimes that's a shock because uh when naturally you're getting your what are they called all these little you have subsidies you get your housing subsidized your children go to a good school they all their schooling gets paid you perhaps get a cost of living allowance when you're down there so all of a sudden you know your salary may be doubled perhaps from your base center you get back in the united states you come back here and it's halved and you get a hell of a shock just as the move overseas challenges individuals in a family differently so the move back does the employee may return to an organization that doesn't make use of what he or she has learned and done overseas oftentimes there's not a meaningful place of assignment in the home company when the person returns there's they're not sure quite what to do with them they don't understand the skills that the working spouse is coming back with and so they're not sure how to use that working spouse when you re-enter people kind of have to learn to know you a little bit they have to understand that yeah you've been out there for five or six years you're kind of frightening to them overseas you've been a a really big fish you know and you've had a lot of responsibility supervising a lot of people making a lot of decisions for the for the offices but when you come home you find it very frustrating that you can't make the decisions you used to make and you have to rely on other people's information and insights as well this is still the home office and this is where the really big business decisions are made this is where the action is i have a very good friend who's just come in and he just can't understand how come he still doesn't have his private office set up he's having a struggle with it but he's having to struggle with a lot of things and you're trying to re-enter the job market at the same time with the same company he's worked for for ten years and people have forgotten him preparing for re-entry is a little bit like preparing for old age you don't start when you're 70. you start before you you reach that point and the preparation for reentry should be part of the whole cycle of moving overseas at the time that an individual leaves the united states to go overseas that's when you start thinking about coming back say goodbye to the important people here and not lead them to expect that we're going to be back oh you know next week or something it's a long time and they're going to change we're going to change so we're not promising things we can't live up to which then they resent and we pay for it when we get home before you go overseas one of the things that you as an employee should do is to find a godfather a mentor who will look out for your interests while you're overseas will make sure that you're kept abreast of changes in the corporate structure will make sure that your name pops up periodically in discussions hey yo just had a letter from joe and he is doing marvelously in timbuktu he really we should think about him in a couple of years insist that you have with you abroad excellent means of communicating with people back home both in the home office and socially so that you can continue to get reports continue to get information of what's happening back home and you need to have a way that you continually uh have your input into the political arena within the organization while we're overseas a number of things we can do first be conscious of the ways in which we are changing our behavior the way we see ourselves in the world our attitudes and keep the people back home people important to us up to date on our thinking feeling as we're going through keep them in touch with us but also ask them about their lives stay in touch with them um because they too are going through important changes one of the bits of water i insisted of myself was to write two letters a week one to my office which gave the official version of what was going on and one to press 15 20 members of my family which gave the completely unvarnished version with all the the pluses and minuses present the successes that i'm having over here and the things that i'm learning here are the new skills i've got here's some new insight i've gained by being abroad then it's those kinds of informations that might serve to help people back home understand what a tremendous resource this person is going to be when they come back be very careful in some of your financial planning not to overload yourself so if you came in and didn't have the position you thought you were going to have that you were financially overextended i've seen that happen find out within the direct time period before one comes back what it is you should know about what is the price of real estate where am i going to live where am i going to put my child in school what is the job market for the spouse looking like right now doesn't mean that you really do that much about it but you start getting the information together just before coming back again say goodbye to your local friends because if you have adapted to the culture and really been effective you will have people to say goodbye to again an international life is one of constant hellos and goodbyes coming back you have to reset your expectations you're going to have to fit in you're going to be interested in other people around you and that makes i think these are indeed going overseas i mean you can't be comparing now the way it used to be um you can't be always talking about that environment it's not going to be the way it was it's the way it is and you have to learn to adjust to that so it's it's it's reverse culture shock it's you have to do the same thing you can have to move into a new culture think through what you went through during your initial adjustment overseas what worked what didn't it's a stressful situation certain things helped you certain things did not learn from that because those very things that helped you there will help you when you come home because home is new it's changed while you've been away we come back from an international assignment and we're very excited about everything that's happened to us and that we've learned and that we've seen and that we've done and we've brought all these artifacts back and we want to share them distill the essence of the overseas experience and come up with one or two things of real significance to you that you will convey to the people who are important to you here they're not going to listen for hours to you they're not going to see your hundreds of signs but at least be very sure that this one thing that was significant to you they do understand there's connection at that one point and let's don't assume that we are the people who have had the exciting time we are the people who have something to say before we say anything at all to them let's just stop and listen to them they have been through two years three years important years of their lives let's ask them what's happened to them and ask them again and really listen before we start accounting our adventures overseas [Music] so [Music] so basically this is a film to say stop talking about how things were different when you were on your trip we're sick of it well in germany the streets are so much cleaner 83 man that's so great um yeah and you know again very much love the niche aspect of this and it's such a specific group of people and specific situation and we learn from it so this next film is um yeah this is a really weird film so i have lots of drug films and this one is was made by lockheed uh aviation and i think it was part of a training series for management on about about drugs and it's animated and it's just weird it's uh i've shown another one in this series and this one is equally as weird because it's animated it's trying to explain about the behavioral aspects or effects of drugs but it's using animated cavemen to do it and i'm for the life i mean i can't really figure out why why are they using animated cavemen like they could have animated just people and it's like a presentation in a like a board room but it's i don't know it's so weird so let's watch behavioral effects of drugs and maybe you can give me some insight you managers know that drugs can change behavior in these ways drugs can increase activity drugs can decrease activity drugs can cause people to hear feel or see things that really do not exist a drug may affect all people in at least one of these three ways this is called the general behavioral effect of drugs however the same drug can affect different people in different ways for example lsd and hallucinogen might have this effect on assistant one [Music] or the same lsd might affect another person assistant to in this way in other words drugs have specific behavioral effects for different people it is also true that the same drug can affect the same person in different ways at different times the first time assistant one was given lsd this was the effect the second time assistant one was given lsd this was the effect [Music] in other words a drug may have different effects on the same person at different times i'm going to put you in the position of decision maker which of the three possible behavioral effects does the following show the effect of the drug taken by my assistance was a general behavioral effect both went to sleep let's try another example this will be [Music] tougher [Music] right that was an example of how the same drug can have a different effect on the same person at different times sorry that film ended really quickly let me um get rid of some of my mediterranean chicken so everybody's saying like the flintstones and i agree the flintstones were around that time but what is going on why do they want to use the flintstones because it's not really for kids this is for adults so excuse me i'm not really quite sure what to tell you but i do know that the film ended very quickly so i have to quickly uh thread up another film seem like good so here's the palestinian all right this one looks good all right so i periodically go to the archive and pull some films and this one is pretty great [Music] you can see i'm threading up putting it through the gate [Music] and this film is called the young entrepreneur program so let's watch it enjoy so [Music] so several years ago a young man from hamilton ohio wrote me and told me about a lawn maintenance business which he established using toro equipment he suggested that toro really ought to consider extending this kind of a program across the country to other teenagers none of this really became the seed of the toro's young entrepreneur program it's a program that's now entering its third year the name young entrepreneur is somewhat cumbersome but it really is descriptive of what we're trying to do with the program for the purpose of the young entrepreneur program is to give teenagers an opportunity to get work in the summer which has sometimes been difficult in recent periods the program is a joint effort really by toro its distributors and in many cases its own dealers but through that joint effort while we feel that we're making a contribution in a way that's consistent with our business and we're terribly encouraged about the future of the toro young entrepreneur program across the country okay before we go any further i want to pass out toro's booklet on lawn maintenance program for teenagers which just passes around there is no charge at all for any aspect of the program the student who enrolls in the program goes to classes that are sponsored by toro at no charge to himself he received materials and instructions on how to use the equipment how to set up the business at no charge to himself and the main thing that he has to put forward is effort and dedication to the program in designing the program it's been very important to us that the program be open to all people who would like to become involved in it the only restrictions that we have are that we do require that the teenagers be in the 14 year old 18 year old category part of the reason for that is that we are concerned with the ability of a teenager to operate the equipment so we have found through experience that 14 to 18 years is a very good age range in which to have the program let's take a look at toro's booklet on the lawn maintenance program for teenagers in this booklet you're going to find the curriculum that was used in setting up the young entrepreneur program was very carefully thought out and researched both by people within toro but also by using outside resources and essentially divides into three basic areas safety which is a major consideration in any program of this nature second area is how to go about setting up the business and the third area is the technology of maintaining lawns and lawn equipment very important ingredient in the total curriculum that the of training that the young entrepreneur gets involved safety and our safety courses the aspect of the course dealing with safety really relates to the individual to the operator to the young entrepreneur and then secondly to the lawn itself and thirdly to the equipment and these three ingredients together are what are terribly important for the young entrepreneur to understand as he approaches safe operating practices in the in the course of his business i want to talk to you about some of the safety features that toro's built into this machine but before we start taking anything off of here i want you to remember to always turn off this machine before you do anything with it before you remove this bag before you clean it always turn off the machine and pull that spark plug wire toro has long been concerned with safety not only for the operator but also for bystanders in the design of its equipment and we believe that we have taken a leadership position within the industry but by the same token safety really relates to how the machine is used and how it's cared for by the operator himself so we have stress safety in all of our training and thus far we have found that the students are extremely receptive to it and very respectful of both the issue and the equipment another aspect of the training which the young entrepreneur gets involves how do you go about setting up your business it entails some training and salesmanship i want to cover some of the things that are important for you to present to the customer some of the things we talked about earlier and entails some training and how you go about advertising your services and probably most importantly it also talks to the student about how does he go about keeping score of his business the record-keeping aspects of the young entrepreneurs efforts over the course of the summer and it also teaches the young entrepreneur in the method of pricing his services which is a very critical thing because the whole tenets of the program is to have the young entrepreneur come out with a profit at the end of the summer and what he's basically selling is his time and his effort and his skills and resources the record-keeping aspects of it are really fairly simple we provide the student with a very simple worksheet one that covers accounts payable one that covers accounts receivable and then a very simple profit and loss statement which he can track through the course of the summer we've tried not to make this too complicated for him but yet the fundamentals of record keeping are captured and utilized by the student as he goes into his business during the course of the summer the third and last aspect of the training that the young entrepreneur receives relates to the whole techniques of the business it relates to how does he go about maintaining the lawn the technology of mate law and maintenance and in that regard we teach him such things as how to handle fuel safely how to perform preventative maintenance and care of the equipment so that it will last longer we also get into such things as the agronomy aspects of his job teaching him something about types of grasses what kind of fertilizers to use if this happens to become part of his services how to go about seeding a lawn and over seeding a lawn if this becomes a necessary adjunct to his lawn maintenance business we teach him things about watering grasses what frequency of watering and what types of participation rates of water are necessary many people who have trouble with their lawn have that trouble because they don't know how to properly cut their grass and we also go into the techniques of lawn mowing for there are very different kinds of lawn mowing techniques that can be employed in any given situation we find that all of these aspects have been very well received by the student because they also extend his earning capability by offering services besides just lawn mowing and in many of the instances the young entrepreneurs they have gone into such things as trimming and edging watering they've gone into flower garden care cleaning eaves washing windows and a whole variety of services which one wouldn't necessarily expect would initially be part of a lawn mowing business but are very natural offshoots of that business because he is a young entrepreneur and he ought to go about running his business in an entrepreneurial aggressive fashion the diploma which the young entrepreneur gets at the end of the course which certifies the completion of training requirements which he has is useful more than just a decoration on the wall for him it's useful in terms of taking it to his toro dealer for an allowance against the equipment he might wish to purchase but it's also an important selling tool because he can show that certificate to the prospective customer that he may be soliciting and toro is a well-known name in lawn care businesses and it certifies to the homeowner that here's a young man or woman who has had training in how to take care of lawns it certifies that it's somebody who can use equipment safely and with proper care of the equipment and it also certifies that the young entrepreneur understands the techniques of running a lawn maintenance business which really will serve the homeowner in his best interest in the most effective way possible so the certificate is a very meaningful document it does create selling opportunities and it does give him an economic advantage in terms of equipping himself to run his business most effectively after that he's ready to go into business and we work carefully with him through the course of the summer in varying degrees depending on his needs and requirements but we have counseling service available to him both in terms of the lawn mowing techniques bookkeeping in other ways so that he isn't cast totally adrift that he has some professional guidance through the course of the summer and he can use that and avail himself of that assistance just as much as he wants to as we mentioned earlier the young entrepreneur program is open to all teenagers in the age of 14 to 18 years old this is boys and girls and the teenagers of every economic class and we found that in all of our cases in the early stages of introducing the young entrepreneur program which now has included well over 300 students they have a uniform interest in making money and it's terribly difficult today for teenagers to find jobs in the economy the way it's presently postured their reasons for wanting to make money very broadly as they do uh in the interest range that all teenagers have at this time there are some who are interested in building a college fund and we have had several instances of young entrepreneurs who have earned well in excess of a thousand dollars in the course of a summer which becomes a very meaningful contribution to a college education which they might undertake at a later date in other instances the teenagers are primarily interested in purchasing a car a bicycle or some other form of transportation we have other cases where the teenager's primary motivation is to get outdoor equipment or clothes or all of the other things that teenagers have an interest in buying and it's most important however that they all want some sense of economic independence and the young entrepreneur program is really a way that they can achieve that objective and to do it on their own efforts and with their own work when you finish the garden and the lawn i'll have some more things for you to do okay i hope what you have just seen gives you some sense of the excitement that we feel for the young toro entrepreneur program the enjoyment of being in business for yourself can only be experienced by the doing of it toro can and its distributors can give you the tools to be in business for yourself and to have a successful business but the full degree of your success depends really on your commitment and the effort you put into it and it's for this reason that toro has decided to offer a thousand dollar award to the most outstanding young entrepreneur of the year it's an award that i'd like in this brand um and making some money which is great but uh man they could have used somebody else describing this like maybe another teenager um who could talk about how great it is to participate in this program um thanks all right um this next film is uh made by abc and it was a program that was probably made because of complaints about violence on television specifically abc programming this feels like this is a like mia culpa like okay all right we're gonna show something that addresses this um it's called action and violence and it talks about television action and violence and how it's not real uh and so don't try to do anything bye so [Music] so [Music] you frightened me i frightened you yes why did you scream like that well that's one way to get some attention around here i never needed any attention that bad why don't we get some light on in here and tell everybody what's going on okay this is a television studio i'm bing bingham and we're doing a show about television action and violence and i'm natelyn nelson we started this show in the most dramatic way we could think of because that's how television works shows are designed to grab our attention and then to hold it as part of storytelling plots use action humor and sometimes violence considering our subject this show should hold your attention one way or another most television programs open with an attention grabber it's a way of getting you interested fast and keeping you tuned in there's a lot of competition for your attention in television land there are so many channels and they all want you to stay tuned well that's the job of a broadcaster it's okay but we have to understand what's going on life isn't like tv where everything is either very funny or very sad or very exciting with few in-betweens television is certainly successful in holding our attention but it doesn't do us any favor if we learn from it that the most fun in life comes from taking risks or winning fights yeah but some of the action is real and part of life and television shows us that take football now that's exciting you're right sports are a natural for television a game is built like a play there's a beginning a middle and an end and it's fun to watch wow they really nailed that guy it's too rough for me what do you mean i love the action somebody could get hurt yeah but these are highly trained athletes and they wear protective gear and they're taught how to take the falls and the blocks without getting hurt i worry about the kids who pretend they're big time quarterbacks and don't even have a helmet there's another kind of violence on television newscasts often include violence because the news reports reflect the events that happened that day and whether we like it or not much news consists of unusual angry or violent behavior but it's important to remember that the news that we see on television or reading the newspapers or here on the radio isn't an accurate reflection of everything that happens in real life the newscast must select those events which are important unusual or interesting you'll never see a newscast report that breakfast in your house was fun this morning or that your dad took you and your friends to the movies these events are just too ordinary to be called news even though they happen far more often than a plane crash or a gun shooting there are many kinds of action and adventure shows on tv and many of them have violent scenes but the kind of violence we see on make believe programs is different from the violence we see on the news we know that it's not real [Music] i'm a gun for hire i'm a black belt and my hands are a lethal weapon i can turn into a monster and defeat all attackers i'm made of steel i'm a law enforcement officer [Music] but sometimes i think i'm a target and people want me for practice prepare to defend yourself hey wait a minute why pick on me i'm just a pussycat i thought you were a tiger take this and that and this well this is a show about television so uh we had to have a fight can i get up now i'm not really hurt actors in television fights don't get hurt because the fights are carefully rehearsed now let's go over that fight slowly first of all the most important thing when you're staging a television fight are the camera angles and the actors reactions now from this camera angle you'll be able to see that nan's hands don't ever touch me ready man here we go one two three like that now when we shoot the same fight from this angle from behind bing and he adds his reactions and we throw in a few sound effects it'll really appear as though we're having a real fight watch here we go okay television fights are just another kind of special effect except they're done by actors and sometimes stuntmen and stunt women let's make believe this is a really dramatic show and i'm gonna get my revenge oh he's so sweet always giving me flowers [Music] i bet you're wondering why i didn't knock nan out well i used what we call a breakaway pot now here's a breakaway bottle watch pots and bottles are fixed so that they break easily they're not even made of clay just a kind of spun sugar now here's a breakaway chair wouldn't want one of those in my living room all fights on television are staged and rehearsed and when people are hit with something it's usually light as a feather now if this were a cartoon my head would be split in half and i would be talking to you from both sides of my mouth we laugh at the darndest things when they happen in cartoons but did you ever notice how quickly cartoon characters recover it only takes cartoon characters a few seconds to bounce back from what for us would be the most horrible accidents we almost never see the results of violence in cartoons or in real action television programs well that's because the action takes place in a play world of entertainment we should never confuse the pretend violence we see on television programs with the real pain injury and sorrow that violent behavior can cause in real life we should point out that dramatic shows and comedies on television often show us how people solve problems without fists or guns yes of course and many important plays have been written about violent conflicts but most of the time the writer lets us know that violence hurts and people are the losers we can even learn how to solve problems by watching television yeah and sometimes those solutions start with words like um i'm sorry are other words like i didn't really mean to hurt your feelings when i or i didn't know you cared so much about um try i'm sorry i upset you i really want to be your friend folks it's the let's try to avoid a fight and make friends game can we find a way to be friends i mean it's silly for us to be fighting all the time gee you know i'm really sensitive about certain things i made a mistake i'm sorry i like the sound of that one usually the simplest most honest statement of how you feel is the best people do disagree and quarrel sometimes even best friends get into arguments and that's okay you need to be able to disagree with people but we don't go around clunking people we disagree with on the head it may seem funny or exciting or it might even tickle your interest but the television action way of solving problems is not the way most people in real life solve theirs in our everyday world the people who solve problems with guns and fists and reckless driving end up in prisons or in hospitals and that's not for me or me either living in the real world is too much fun and so is watching television if you use your head bye now so strike the camera did you see the weird um so it was yale university that own the copyright for this although it was obvious it was using it seemed like yeah i'm not sure anyways abc paid for it and abc distributed it and probably showed it but um did you see the weird uh roman numerals at the end so let's see if i can do this it's funny the one thing i tell interns is when they work for av geeks the one thing that they will learn is roman numerals and so um this is what the copyright was and so what they did is is kind of interesting i saw it a little bit in um the two 2000s i think but um so what they did is you know mcm so that's one thousand then it's another one thousand minus a hundred then it's um c which is another 100 minus 20 so it's 1980. i've never seen anybody else do that that was that's a really weird way i saw occasionally they would do it in the 90s they would do that but never in the 80s it's such a weird thing so i wish i actually had an educational film about roman numerals i should look and see if i do i have one about probably about numbers and counting and new rules and things like that so yeah a good tutorial um thanks everybody for tuning in today um wow we had a wide variety of different things we learned about um which makes me very happy um to see all the different um
