[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] meet the action people these are the guys who work with things the guys who aren't all thumbs the guys who can make hands and eyes work together like a team the experts say these types belong in the mechanical field it doesn't pay to lend this guy your car in a flash you'll have it taken apart but don't worry he's the inventive type he can improvise design or improve on just about any mechanical device around and does so every chance he gets pretty good at math too but not just for math's sake he can apply his math to his interest in things like maybe building a ham radio rig or would you believe testing equipment when it comes to things like cars and radios well let's just say that girls are more interested in sewing it takes a pretty important mechanical ability to look at the pieces of a pattern and visualize a finished dress what do the experts call these abilities oh fancy names like the person isn't all thumbs the experts say he has good fingers and that's good if you can look at a flat drawing and see a 3d object you have good visualization that's good too so is the ability to make accurate measurements and if you can make your hands and eyes work together on a job like this brother you've got eye hand coordination if you don't have it don't tackle a job like this [Music] what it all adds up to is this if you like the things you've seen people doing in this picture if your bag is things making things repairing things operating things then you have the interests and the abilities most often found among people who work in the mechanical field there's a lot of satisfaction in being able to create something tangible from little more than an idea or in making a sick engine well again [Music] there's a lot of satisfaction too in being able to master a mechanical monster that would scare the daylights out of most guys this is a numerical control machine the part it is making has been plotted mathematically entered on magnetic tape and fed to a computer the rest is automatic if you know what you're doing then there's the kind of satisfaction you get from helping other people the good inside feeling that comes from knowing that you are making something people need and want the satisfaction of being able to do the things which help to make a better life for all of us when you add the satisfaction that comes from doing a job you really enjoy while providing for your family well that's a hard combination to beat how deep you get involved depends on you your interests your abilities and how much of yourself you're willing to invest [Music] what do these jobs have in common well they are all in the mechanical field and they are jobs you can enter with little training or experience however if you are able to invest more of yourself in education and training you may qualify for jobs such as these [Music] these jobs are on the skills level [Music] most of these jobs require at least a high school education but like a lot of things in this old world the more of yourself you put into a job into preparing for the job the more satisfaction and reward there is in doing it [Music] interests and abilities coupled with education and training that's the key that will open the door to the future you want for example invest two years of your life in college and you may qualify as a builder today tomorrow and for years to come there will be a critical housing shortage innovative builders are needed if every man is to have a decent home where his family can live with pride and dignity there is a need for schools where everyone can get a meaningful education and help stamp out ignorance poverty and want and there must be more places where men can work to provide for the needs of the world but maybe you prefer a different type of job like surveying or how about a draftsman the man who takes an idea and lays it out in black and white maybe you can accomplish more by helping other people to work more efficiently say like being a production manager then there's the engineering technician you might call him a working engineer he's the guy who takes a lot of far out ideas figures out how to make them work then proves that it will work before going into production jobs like these grab you you have to work for them and the place to start is at your friendly college campus with that high school diploma in hand level the guidance counselors call this the semi-professional level okay what about the professional professional level jobs generally are open to college graduates only four years and a degree often additional training is required and usually a state examining board must issue a license before you can work for example if you'd rather fly a jet than work on its engines you're still in the mechanical field but you need more education training and of course a pilot's license and would you believe that some of the same aptitudes of a good pilot are also needed by a dentist finger dexterity and eye hand coordination for example even a surgeon particularly an orthopedic surgeon deals in things mechanical bones joints and muscles if you like to design things computers mass transit systems or a new piece of production equipment then you need college and training as an engineer or if you want to create a new type of structure using new kinds of materials and construction techniques start with training as an architect unskilled skilled semi-professional professional the choice is yours depending of course on how much of yourself you are willing and able to invest your counselor is the man with the answers to your questions if you think you've found what you want in the mechanical field he'll help you plan your studies maybe you'd like to explore some more maybe you are interested in the scientific field the clerical field or the computational field then there are careers in sales the arts the social services and in the verbal field at any rate your counselor is the man to see whatever field you decide to enter enjoy yourself work isn't a drag to the person who is doing what he wants to do [Music] [Applause] hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to our lunchtime uh streaming show av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old educational films from the av geeks collection of over 27 000 films um and this was actually let's see if i can position the camera this is tell us any and i'll start to rewind you can see i'm actually transferring um this live uh to some of you who were confused on facebook um facebook is horrible when it comes to trying to have a backup show ready in case there's some sort of um natural disaster event uh so last week we potentially had uh well hurricane weathers weather came through tropical storm weather came through and which usually means that i lose power and or internet and so i had a show ready to go just in case and youtube lets me kind of keep it up there and move it periodically but facebook lets me move it about a week and then it's hard to re-edit it and figure out how the ui has changed so much and it's so convoluted that it started showing an hour earlier than it was supposed to show so it's very frustrating um and i apologize for that confusion and i stopped it i hope in time but for use on you guys on youtube and twitch and other platforms you're going like who cares there we go um yeah that last film was was great because there's these long musical interludes at the beginning and the end and uh yeah it's uh kind of fascinating it it's uh i think this is uh oxford films version of the is a career in black for you so counselor films that um from the uh belt uh beltway maryland dc area um speaking of dc this is a a tiny episode of a thing that used to come on uh saturday morning on cbs i think it's friends in and it shows different kids in different parts of the united states and this is friends in washington d.c enjoy hi i'm robert edward let's be friends i live in the nation's capital i live in the eastern part of the united states in the district of columbia art's a lot of fun in school [Music] i live in washington [Music] so the city was named for george washington this memorial to him has stones from all 50 states washington was the first president of the united states our president lives in the white house his working offices are here too the president recommends laws to congress he also signs laws decided by congress the president is the elected leader of the american people washington has been the capital of the united states since 1800 congress meets here in the capitol men are elected to congress by the people of all 50 states they work here to decide laws that govern our country law is also the work of the supreme court the nine justices of the highest court in the united states meet here to judge important cases of law their decisions affect all americans washington's a beautiful city [Music] [Music] wow [Music] oh we're back those are always short so i'm uh this is not very interesting then there you go let's see if i can get a sense of what i'm doing here uh threading up the next film [Music] so you can see it's actual film going through telecini so in here are the camera which is right here i can't really see it really well but um then there's a gate that has led light assembly in it and a mirror and basically what it does is uh tell us any actually allows uh the film to be uh shown without the flicker because uh most films sound films are 24 frames a second and most video is 30 or 29.96 blah blah blah um frames per second and so there's if you ever set up a camera video camera out of a projection of a film you'll see a flicker because of that there's that mismatch so what uh a telecine does is it actually pads frames so that it works out and outputs something that is roughly 30 frames a second and um and also this is the camera is aimed at the film frame so you get a really crisp image um yeah this film uh was inspected um there's a variety of different inspected stickers that i run across and things that come in film cans there's a smiley face that says electronically inspected which is pretty great but yeah so this film is the title let's make up a story so enjoy [Music] what's your favorite story maybe in the leopard curious george the snowy day suppose you wanted to make up a story you know what you'd have to use your imagination with your imagination you can be anyone with your imagination you can go anywhere with your imagination you can do anything first you have to imagine some characters for your story of course you can use people real people or they believe people remember the story of king midas and the golden touch oh yeah he loves his daughter very much but he loves his gold even more king midas is greedy you can also use animals for your characters remember this famous story the three little pigs right they're characters who else you can use other kinds of characters too things a lighthouse and a little ship right and in this story the characters are a lady an egg beater some eggs if you were making up a story there are a lot of characters you could use empty dumpy a scary man a sailor a baby next your story needs a setting the location for your story what's the setting in this story a big boat a castle let's imagine some of our own settings can you describe them under the sea how about inside this beach ball how about on the planet your setting could even be in the sky now that you have a setting and a character you have to do something right what if you were a dinosaur and found yourself in a swimming pool what would you do what do your characters do what happens to them is the plot for instance little tom thumb has a problem an evil spider has come into the castle to steal the king's treasure the eggs in the carton are his friends you just can't beat them how will the egg beater and the housewife straighten out their problems that was the story's plot the ugly duckling is so ugly that everyone always makes fun of him as he grows older he has no friends or family and he decides to live all alone then one day when he's swimming in the woods he looks down at the water and sees what happens to the ugly duckling is the plot of the story greedy king midas has a big problem too he got his wish everything he touches turns to gold [Music] even his own daughter now what can he do he loves his daughter deeply but he loves his goal too what king midas does is the story's plot in this story the town of hamlin is cursed with thousands of rats mayor promises to pay the pied piper anything if only he'll get rid of every rat [Music] so the piper charms the rats out of the town and into the forest never to return but when he goes to be paid the mayor won't keep his promise and refuses to pay the piper what does the pied piper do the way the characters solve their problem is the plot of the story imagine a plot from this picture and this one make up some action from this and this there's a plot in this picture and this one and finally your story needs an ending the ending tells what happens to the characters how the plot is settled at the end of this story does tom thumb win his battle with the evil spider come on at the end of the three little pigs which little pig is wide what becomes of the other little pig what happens to the wolf [Music] remember the egg beater that had to beat up his friends the eggs what kind of ending would you make up events okay okay you've got the idea now remember whatever story you make up first choose your character they can be people or things or plants or animals next what kind of setting do you want for your characters be clear tell all the little things about it what's your setting look like now what happens to the characters in your story that's your plot [Music] finally you need an ending for your story imagination is your own special world you can create anything you want there so use your imagination you make up a story that's actually a really great film um lots of nice shots of different things and um yeah lots of you know you get your mind thinking about different stories and about how to tell a story and this would be easily something shown in language arts class and the idea would be then the teacher would have students write a story come up with a story um so you know i like films like that i like i do definitely remember liking writing stories in uh elementary school they were all probably related to some sort of star wars thing but you know all right um i think it's time to uh it's funny i think everything is from the 70s we're showing thus far um i've shown some other films by featuring this character uh he is a um slapstick heavy guy with a bald guy with a beard who cares about the environment and yet cannot seem to keep from falling down and making mistakes there's some singing in here so please feel free to sing along this is uncle smiley goes planting [Music] um [Music] look out here [Music] [Applause] no matter what happens is let me tell you about the special time uncle smiley took us on a trip planting we took some shovels and some baby trees each of us was looking forward to planting [Music] driving through the mountains in the early morning you could feel the air was clean by the river valleys in the fields of corn and the forest deep and green looking for the place where the woods lay burnt in the earth was scorched inside looking for the place where a hiker's hasty hampi had not died uncle smiley told us that he knew everything there was to know about hiking [Music] so with our trees and buckets in our hands we set out across the meadowlands hiking along on a hiking trip you never really know what surprises lanes for and just how things will go he means well but it's hard to tell what uncle's gonna do you won't believe the things he did and what we all went through hey have you ever planted a tree well we have we went reforesting but that's just the big word for planting trees in the woods where they used to grow uncle smiley heard there'd been a forest fire in the state park so we all got together to go back in the woods where the fire had been and plant some baby trees you know for somebody who knows a lot about hiking uncle sure had a pile of catastrophes along the way what the catastrophe well catastrophe is when something really horrible goes wrong that you don't expect oh yeah uncle smiley had plenty of those in fact he had his first to catastrophe right after we started out you see uncle found this thing tony said it was a hornet's nest but uncle was sure it was a beehive and he wanted to get some honey uncle said he knew all about bees and it wouldn't hurt the many if you just took a tiny bit of honey while they weren't looking boy i don't know how uncle could get past a bunch of bees or hornets without being noticed [Music] [Music] [Applause] hmm [Music] uncle was so sorry and ashamed of what he'd done to the hornet's home he was more worried about the little hornets then he was about the sting he had gotten on his backside i guess maybe he thought it served him right after being so careless and inconsiderate in the first place well anyway we were just sitting there in the field feeling sorry for the hornet when all of a sudden there was a rustling in the bush next to us everybody got really scared at first and uncle jumped up to protect us in case it was something dangerous then we snuck over real carefully to see what it was [Music] it was just a poor little rabbit with its paw caught in the big steel trap the little rabbit could have never gotten out of the trap and if we hadn't have come along he would have just stayed there and starved to death uncle went over to his knapsack to get a pair of thick gloves to open the trap with he had to be real careful and quiet not to scare the bunny [Music] traps are such mean things they don't seem fair uncle smiley said that they were against the law in the park anyway i can't understand how some people can hurt animals like that sort of like they don't think animals have any feelings or anything yeah they don't seem to realize that animals and people should be friends [Music] while we were hiking along the river some of the kids noticed some pretty flowers growing beside the trail yeah and they went over and started picking them i guess they didn't realize what they were doing uncle smiley came back to stop them he reminded them that if everybody did that pretty soon there wouldn't be any flowers for anybody to look at when they were hiking and there wouldn't be any place for honeybees to get food from either bees need flowers just like people everybody needs flowers many people realize animals and people we're all related and many people still don't realize every form of life they know is related they all come together in a special way to make the world go round rabbits and trees and flowers and bees in the grass upon the ground each has a certain job to do and listen a certain way big or small they touch us all and each in a different way uncle had a bad habit of reading while he was hiking and that got him into an awful lot of trouble sometimes actually though it wasn't always his fault [Music] uncle was really mad when he saw what made him slip how could somebody be so stupid and lazy to just throw all that trash right there on the trail i don't know but uncle sure must have been bugged the thing that got in the most were all those papers and trash from camels how could anybody be so stupid to take a picture of something beautiful and throw the trash all over it to make it ugly [Music] we had to hike for a long way before we finally got to the place where the fire had been it was already getting late in the afternoon yeah we were just hiking up to the top of the hill when we suddenly saw it all of us were really surprised because we'd never seen where a real forest fire had been before except in the movies and on tv but it didn't really look like the fires in the movies either it looked different uncle smiley told us that forest fires in the movies were usually fires that burned everything above the ground and were called crown fires but lots of fires like this one were underground fires fires which meant that the roots burn under the ground and the fire spread from root to root of each tree and those are hard fires to put out sometimes because you can't always see where the fire is going uncle smalley told us how forest fires kill a lot more than just trees baby animals and birds that can't get out of the way fast enough get burned up too and all because somebody had forgotten left a campfire burning that was what started the whole thing off well we just got our shovels and trees ready and got set to go to work uncle i just read a book about planting trees so we planned the first one to show us how to do it [Music] it's not really hard at all it's fun [Music] in a good place for a tree to be planted a tree needs some men rainy sea and space to grow up tall and earth in which to spread its roots and catch the rain that falls and planted in the proper season in the proper way and plan it in the proper place to grow up strong someday [Music] trees are more than pretty scenery there are many things a greenery gives us a tree is something special and we take for granted all the things that it gives us [Music] but from the trees we all receive the gift of air we breathe so much air that fills the earth begins with tiny leaves and trees will help the land retain the soil in which we sow and help retain the water from the rains and melting snow [Music] you know it'll be nice to come back someday and see how big the trees have gotten i wonder how big they'll get real real real big albert well now with all our trees planted it was time to go home uncle said he'd studied the map and knew a faster way back by taking another trail it didn't turn out that way though on the way uncle had another catastrophe the first one happened when we stopped along the trail look at a beautiful waterfall uncle wasn't looking at what he was doing again and knocked his hat off into the water yeah it all started when he went to climb down the rocks after it you know how much he loved that hat but boy was that a dumb thing to do i'll say we tried to stop him but he said he'd be all right you know uncle smiley [Music] uh poor uncle smiley kept having trouble all the way back to the car everything kept happening to him yeah by the time we got back he could hardly walk [Music] i guess we should have carried him but golly uncle smiley's awful heavy you know he's heavier than almost anybody but he's nicer than anybody too even if he does make a lot of mistakes now we've told you about the special time uncle smiley took us on chip planting we took some shovels and some baby jeans each of us was looking forward to [Music] the woods they burned and the earth was squished inside we found the place where hikers tasty campfire had not died [Music] [Music] do so [Music] thanks girl scouts of america for that um yeah i've shown quite a few uncle smiley films uh and i think i have a couple more to go so i'm excited that people are responding um not in a positive way but in a way that they're they're fascinated by the curiosity that is uncle smiling um i wanted to say uh quick thank you to william and julie for um this is uh i finally got a report of the films that i'm going to be receiving and i have some tentative numbers of the number of cans that i'll be receiving and it's probably between eight and nine thousand cans of film from the company that owns coronet and supposedly a lot of these are pristine uh kodachrome prints which is really exciting and so i'll be certainly highlighting and showcasing these um and a truck might be showing up next week uh i have a storage space that will accommodate these pallets of film like 12 13 pallets of films um so it's exciting and i'm happy to have an audience that will appreciate what i'm showing and they won't be as faded i'm hoping you know the kodachrome won't fade but there are there's actually chrome in there as well which will probably have some issues but um i'm excited to be showing these so this next film is a coordinate film and it's probably faded a little bit but there you go this is the lonely scarecrow [Music] this is me you know who i am the lonely scarecrow [Music] my story started one spring morning on a farm i wasn't even made then barbara and frank were visiting their grandfather for a few days and watching him plant corn just as he was coming for more seed to plant frank and barbara began to shout about crows in the field [Music] what a nuisance crows can be they do love to eat corn they can pluck the kernels right out of the ground about as fast as a farmer can plant them well they chase those pesky birds away before they could do much damage but grandfather remembered when he was a he had made a man out of straw and old clothes to scare the crows a scarecrow yes frank and barbara both had read about how farmers used to make scarecrows to protect their fields and that's how i got started back at the barn they got together all the things they'd need to build me frank brought some good straw that would be my insides [Music] then grandpa nailed together something to hold up my outside a wooden frame they made me a happy face they put grandpa's old shirt and overalls on the frame and stuffed them with straw they filled me up nice and round and put me all together and then i was finished wasn't i handsome all i needed now was a hat there well there i stood all set to watch over the field frank spotted the crows they didn't like having me around one bit i could tell that from their coins they weren't sure what i was but they'd find out before too long i'd be protecting that field until the corn spouted and grew and ripened i could tell that frank and barbara were kind of sad to leave me they thought i'd be lonely out there the next day grandpa took frank and barbara home they'd be back in a few months i was glad they stopped to say goodbye to me i was going to miss them i watched them go and i was sad too but i knew my job would keep me busy watching and it was an important job too yes sir well at the start i was a little lonely there didn't seem to be anyone around but then i started looking carefully the trees in the woodlot were putting on their green spring finery in some spots there were beautifully colored wildflowers then one day i saw something moving over there under the trees a skunk she seemed very busy searching for food after her long winter sleep those first days that i was alone i spotted a raccoon and an opossum too and close by in another tree there was a deer mouse kind of quiet and shy you know how some folks are so even though i didn't have any visitors i wasn't really alone out there in the cornfield i watched a busy squirrel that lived in the woodlot he seemed to be minding everybody's business then he'd run and scamper and chatter away the birds were too busy building their nests or warming their eggs to pay any attention to squirrel nonsense and sometimes those birds would sing but there was one bird call i didn't take to [Laughter] i sure didn't like the coin of those pesky crows they hadn't forgotten the sweet corn seeds so finally they got brave enough to come down to the field hoping i wouldn't see them when i saw him and i scared him the only way i could by flapping my arms that sent him packing for home every time my flapping kept them flying out of the cornfield i had to protect at the edge of the field i had more pleasant bird neighbors a family of bobble links that had made their home in the tall grass yes sir i had lots of neighbors out there of course you had to look sharp to see some of them like the nervous little gophers and the frisky field mouse and almost right under my feet i had other neighbors that lived mostly underground the ants that were forever running from their nest and an earthworm that churned up the soil lonely me i should say not not with so much company living nearby and as the spring days grew warmer and longer the young corn sprouts began to push up out of the ground and strike the field with green i could see that they were good strong plants and i was proud that i'd protected them from the pesky crows those corn plants weren't the only young things around either why out in the wood lot mrs possum was toting her brood of youngins around and mrs raccoon was teaching her offspring how to search for food so was mrs skunk in her nest in the long grass mother bobolink was feeding her soft downy fledglings a mother rabbit had moved into the short grass where she'd made a nest for her babies it was one of her babies that gave me the scare of my life it didn't happen in the spring but later in the summer when the corn plants had grown big and tall almost up to my shoulders on one plant a spider had strung the silvery threads of its web to catch insects the spider ate most times the spider didn't have long to wait my field was swarming with insects i couldn't tell you how many kinds there were flying insects hopping insects and walking insects one thing i do know birds living in the wood lot came on many others it to find and eat those insects like there were some delicious treat but i noticed that there was one bird a hawk who would settle for insects only if there was nothing better just the sight of him hovering there scouting for his dinner sent a lot of my neighbors running for cover it looked to me like the hawk wasn't going to find a big dinner today or was he because i looked down and oh there was one of the young rabbits that lived at the edge of the field she was too busy eating to see the hawk but he saw her all right he wasn't scared of me but maybe maybe if i flapped my arms he'd take his sharp eyes off her for just a second he did and that second was all the rabbit needed to scamper away between the tall corn plants well this was one time he wouldn't have rabbit for supper but i hope the little rabbit had learned a good lesson and that was the day barbara and frank came back to visit their grandfather's farm they pushed their way through the tall corn to see me they hadn't seen me since spring and i was sure glad to see them again [Music] grandpa didn't have to tell them what a good job i had done protecting the cornfield they could see frank and barbara were real proud of me yet they kept thinking that i had led a very lonely life but you and i know that i hadn't maybe you could tell them why you could write a story or draw pictures of the many animals that were my neighbors could you do that that would make me a very happy scarecrow [Music] so many windows open on this computer had to keep clicking through thank you john for the uh the delicious coffee um as i said heavy geeks live off coffee um yeah so you can see that cornet film was very similar to the little burrow lost little burrow which we use this kind of story narrative to learn about things like worms and about what is you know what appears in a cornfield or in a you know in a field in the concept of scarecrow so it's a way to get kids to follow along and sneak little facts into the story um this next film is made for sales people and it's called tough customer it's [Music] animating [Music] oh what a day what a day first louie and chandler last up my shipping schedule but if that's not enough haley comes up with a new rule that says we have to do the paperwork on all salaries and then to top it off fighting them into the busiest season of the year anderson ops and quit then goes to work for windsor oil am i frustrated oh the next person that starts to give me any golf at all i'm telling you it's a salesman to see you met uh what company did you say you were with caltronics caltronics mitt this'll be a cinch now that i've gone to the horatio alger sales school and learned the six rules for successful selling sellers jack sellers good work sellers congratulations thank you sir and always remember sellers the six golden rules of selling i will sir just like you taught us mr middle will see you now mr sellers oh thank you ah mr middle yeah what do you want what do you want [Music] let me show invoices got invoices it'll keep a record of all invoices it'll keep a total account a running account a daily account a cumulative account and most important of all it talks now give it some data and ask it a question [Music] um what are the correct billings to upland pharmaceuticals it takes a while for the computer to warm up yeah but that voice are you kidding well the voice has given us a little trouble but it's a lot better than it used to be it used to sound like bugs bunny whenever you asked the question it would always say what's up doc here look at this diagram hey this diagram is ridiculous it's about as ridiculous as that machine is i'll tell you just give it a second to get ready go ahead try the question again okay what are the correct bills for upland any more at pharmaceuticals like you okay oh this is ridiculous this is that's not a machine that's a side show now get it out of here come on here mr middle sign this order form order form are you kidding now huh it is great isn't it huh i i guess so oh boy oh boy he's beginning to sound more and more like the people who work for me listen you gotta tell me it's great you know what i mean hey this is a great computer that's what you say now you've gotta make me believe in your product and then after you've sold me on what a great machine it is you get out your order book right right you don't have an order book i guess i must have lost it or something oh boy okay well here is an order playing from caltronics take my order on this okay take your party oh good heavens you don't even know how to take an order oh look this is how you do it here you see you have me fill out this information like this is and then you have me sign my name like this you know there that's how it's done huh that's how you sell a computer no you go out and sell one you know what i mean act like you're proud of it huh come on not a boy boy did i ever teach that salesman huh boy oh boy did i teach that salesman you you were right boss i was awful i made every mistake in the book i i did everything wrong oh well we can't win them all we'll sell them next time oh no i sold the machine that's not the problem hi mitt hey what's that thing uh that's a new computer i just bought it's uh really a great machine it's the newest thing you know i can't see what made you buy such a contraption mitch uh but it's the best machine on the market you know what even talks all you do is uh give it the paperwork and ask it a question go on try it try it what are the correct billings to upland pharmaceuticals it's a lot
