[Music] [Music] and I hope that each of you in every part of town will join us again tomorrow at the same time as usual we'll have something that will interest everyone goodbye yes Robbie yes we are loose should be here with it any minute I think he's in the studio now morning patty morning Lou great show this morning thank you did you bring the film right here good Robbie yes buddy would you take this film and set it up for a screening please well thank you I've talked to our program director about your ideas Lou and I hope the film will convince him that we can do some worthwhile Red Cross demonstrations on my show I hope so patty good enough I think you should be here any moment hello there Sam good morning fanny I introduce mr. Lucia and Berger who is the public information chairman for the Red Cross chapter mr. shoenberger mr. Donaldson who is our program director mr. donalsen glad to know you sir how do you do mr. shoenberger you're with the Red Cross full-time no mr. Donaldson I'm a volunteer and do most of my Red Cross work in my spare time although my boss is so enthusiastic about the Red Cross himself he does let me off the job to keep an appointment as important as this one who's with the assembly plant that moved in here a year ago he edits the company newsletter and he's done a terrific job recruiting blood donors but also setting up first aid classes for a company employees really and you still have spare time to do your work well I hardly look at it as work mr. donalsen I like people and I like to do things for people so my Red Cross work is what you might call a labor of love I believe in it I see well there is a need for volunteer work I admire your enthusiasm now Patty has told me something about your idea of running demonstrations on her TV show and I don't know whether it's a good idea for television now don't misunderstand our station is very public service minded we frequently use your red spots some of our employees take part in Red Cross activities but you see for Patty's show we've got to have something which will appeal to people in every part of town and so you can see that I'm a bit yesterday listen if I may that every part of town is exactly the reason we're here with patty because the Red Cross too works with people on every part of town and to use an old saying the picture's worth a thousand words I'd like to show you that film right now well gentlemen I think the film is ready for screening shall we go into the projection room all right you realize of course mr. donalsen that these scenes are just short clips but as you watch I want you to notice particularly that this is a type of activity the Red Cross is engaged in at all times and involves all kinds of people as we watch I will explain each of the scenes okay Robby roll it this is Kathy Thompson she's a very lucky little girl last summer she nearly drowned in a backyard wading pool fortunately I'm not man discovered her in time and was able to revive her with mouth-to-mouth respiration he'd learned it in a Red Cross class in the classroom instructors and pupils don't make actual mouth contact but they come close enough to learn how to do it the important thing is to get the victims head tilted way back to help keep the air passage open now there's a little more to it than that of course such as the proper job position how to avoid air leakage and depending on the size of the victim how hard to blow these additional steps can be clearly shown on television and we know of many lives that have been saved because someone saw such a demonstration even as simple as this one and had the idea of what to do in such an emergency needless to say the Thompsons are mighty glad their milk man was prepared for an emergency and knew what to do to save Kathy's life [Music] [Music] being prepared for emergencies can mean a lot in other ways too these scenes show why hurricane Carla caused the greatest exodus in modern history where she would strike was so unpredictable that Red Cross disaster plans were activated along 800 miles of coastline [Music] knowing this kind of devastation was possible and knowing the human problems in create thousands of Red Cross volunteers worked around the clock ahead of and during Hurricane Cara so that emergency shelter food and clothing could be given to over 300,000 people forced to flee their homes [Music] as always medical and nursing care is a part of Red Cross Disaster Services fortunately there are thousands of wonderful nurses like this one in addition to a disaster duty they also serve as volunteers and chapters teaching free Red Cross classes in care of the sick and injured and mother and baby care the training skill and dedication that they bring to the Red Cross is indispensable and the people they help are deeply grateful especially the victims of disaster [Music] and disaster plays no favors can strike in any part of town any part of the nation [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] because of the news value of disaster everyone is fairly well aware of the Red Cross's role and meeting human needs and emergencies providing shelter when and where it's needed but the part that the Red Cross plays in recovery hardly ever against the same attention yet for individuals and families it's probably the most important when families have insufficient resources to enable them to get back on their feet and are in need of assistance they can bring their problem to the Red Cross Disaster Relief headquarters their individual attention is given to each families problem perhaps household furnishings need to be replaced a home repaired or rebuilt perhaps occupational tools or supplies need to be repaired or replaced this fishing boat damaged by Hurricane Carla was repaired and new fishing nets were bought so one family could remain self-supporting even their fishing shack a total loss in the storm was replaced with a trailer so it could be moved out of the path of the next storm when and if it comes screening and ankle can be very painful it can also be serious if not given immediate attention so when it happens away from home as it did to mrs. Hill our bankers wife on vacation last year this highway sign proved a real blessing it told them there was a person nearby who was trained in first aid [Music] they also knew the highway first-aid station would have a medical directory for the local area so they could get to a doctor right away so even though mr. Hill had always supported the Red Cross he's now promoting the payroll deduction plan as a good way to help keep the Red Cross strong and as a leader in getting other influential people in the community enthusiastic about Red Cross services mr. Hill had learned firsthand that everybody in every part of town can benefit through the Red Cross he made sure his son and daughter took a course in swimming and small craft safety so they'd be safer during their hours of recreation his son Jim even went on to become a water safety instructor [Music] maybe you know heavy armor she's the widow out on Elm Street who brought up her grandson Ted when his parents were killed in an automobile accident Ted's in the army now and the way Hetty looks here you'd think she never had a sick day in her life because a few months ago had he was in the hospital Red Cross blood saved her life Red Cross volunteers helped in many ways to make her stay more comfortable and it was a Red Cross Home Service report to Ted's commanding officer that cleared the way for this reunion but I think it's safe to say if it weren't for the Red Cross she might not be tending her flowers today [Music] well what do you think now mr. donalsen call me Sam Lu okay Sam I had no idea there was so much the Red Cross story you know with all the men entering the service there ought to be some way of letting them and their families know what the Red Cross can do for them well Sam there is a way that our volunteers contact service families all the time to advise them on Red Cross services but reaching more people on TV would help avoid a lot of misunderstanding that I couldn't agree with you more and it's a wonderful idea because about 38 cents of every Red Cross dollar is spent to assist servicemen veterans and their families is that so well I always knew about the Red Cross being involved in the emergency phase of disasters but your disaster preparedness angle is something more people ought to know about like you're stealing my lines now Sam but I'm glad of it and don't forget about the really big Red Cross disastrous story recovery I don't want to bore you with more statistics Sam but the major part about 85% of all Red Cross Disaster expenditures are used in this rehabilitation work and as you know all red cross aid to disaster victims is an outright gift people receive assistance on the basis of need not laws so altogether the Red Cross is spending millions of dollars a year and it's important to let people know how their contributions are being used it would be a fine public service now about the classes you said the nurses taught - what did you call it care of the second injured and mother and baby care yes well it seems to me that something on that order oughta fit patty show very well I certainly think it would and you can also get into first-aid and water safety we can do our great many demonstrations both in the studio and outdoors that'll be very helpful and interesting to everyone I'm sure patty would enjoy it well this will take a lot of planning Lou will you be available to help us yes indeed I would be and so will all the other chapter volunteers well that's fine you know I have a feeling people will actually learn some basic things just by watching the demonstrations on their TV sets many of them will Sam and another important thing is people will be more fully aware what the Red Cross chapter is doing they all know about the services it has for them and will be motivated to participate more actively we need to get through to as many people as possible and let them know that the Red Cross is not an impersonal charity organization that's always helping the other fellow we want to show them that the Red Cross is contributing warm human useful services to our community then that everyone can benefit in every part of town [Music] [Applause] [Music] I stood I still don't know where my hand is hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to our EB geek 16-millimeter educational film lunch streaming event show I mean I guess it's a show right um yeah that last film was Red Cross every part of town a amazing film that kind of documents what Red Cross does I am local level featuring Sam Donaldson and then the other two folks whose name I don't recognize but one was from ABC and one was from NBC so all three networks that's pretty great I think I got that film where'd I get that film feel like that's an eBay purchase but just in case you're tuning in for the very first time or forgot I've been showing films from our collection of over 27,000 tomes to folks like you I've been doing it for more than twenty years and because I'm stuck at home I've decided to continue to do this as a lunchtime thing and show you a bunch of stuff that I haven't really shown I think looking at the list today we're at 471 films that we've been showing since mid-march and that's great and I've been working too over the last couple of years I've had assistants digitizing stuff for stock footage purposes and a lot of that stuff we haven't ever shown anywhere so I've been digging into those hard drives and showing them traditionally I actually digitize the film as we watch it but because I'm stuck at home and not at the archive I have been pulling from hard drives so we're showing files I tried it with a portable transfer machine but it was then he chewing up films and - no no that's a no no thanks everybody for the coffee you can actually buy any geeks coffee and that money will go straight to my nervous system via caffeine so thank you for that this next film is a coronet film it's the title is clipped but it's how honest are you and generally if it's a title that asks a question the answer is not or no it sits in the negative but this one I think everything is worked out ok so here's no spoilers here's how honest are you keep their eye on Bob he's number eight [Music] what did you see do you think Bob's action was honest or dishonest if you saw such an incident what would you do about it that incident came to involve each of us in this room and it caused us to consider the subject of honesty from many angles it sure did that's why mr. Barker he's athletic director of our school suggested that we talk it over with you because well maybe it will help you to know just what we found out about honesty and we found out plenty to be honest may sound easy some of the time it is but it can be a real problem especially when wanting to be honest conflicts with other things you want to do now getting back to that scene in the locker room it happens that Jim was a witness let's see again exactly what Jim saw well what would you have done I wanted to do the right thing the honest thing with what was it question Bob about it tell Ben that bob was in his locker report it to mr. Barker I didn't know what to do so I put off doing anything that night I didn't get much sleep the next day at school was awful I just had to do something tell somebody then after school well I guess when you're in a state like that it doesn't take much to like he's buying himself a present sure does let's ask him over but not that money he's spending I know where he got it in the locker room yesterday after he thought everybody had gone I saw Bob takes something from Ben's pant pocket I was late dressing I saw it I guess it doesn't take a detective to figure out where he got the money to buy that pen but Bob I can't believe it did you ask benefit was missing any money not yet have they reported it not yet you have to you ought to tell mr. Prosser about it right away no you're doing you tell mr. Barker and whatever else happens he'll kick Bob off the team where will we be with our star center gone and had the schedule at the play genic when you put it that way I didn't know what I was going to do but I'd realized I shouldn't have blurted out in public that way so I asked the kids to promise me not to say a word and did they yes we promised but then that's one's on me Terry here's what happened after Jim and Nick let the drug start Terry and I talked about what Jim and told us until Terry there's nothing for you to do but tell mr. Barker about Bob but we promised Jim a promise to tell a lie doesn't count I didn't promise to tell a lie it's the same thing I can't understand you're being so calm about having a thief on your team it's your duty to tell mr. Barker and if you don't I will well there I was wanting to be square with Jim but well I didn't want Rose mad at me and it did seem dishonest to conceal a thing like that so let's practice the next day I'd made up my mind to speak to mr. Barker I don't know just how I was going to say it but Nick and Jim had seen me they moved in fast to keep me from talking well I didn't get to speak to mr. Barker that day I'm not sure I wanted to anyway anyway when I found out what happened I marched right into this office the next day and told mr. Barker know you've seen what actually happened what Jim saw well here's the picture I described to mr. Barker that's the picture I gave mr. Barker at the time I really thought I was telling the truth but of course welcome back to you rose but now let's have a little skull practice of course after Rose made a report I did what was the obvious thing for me to do I questioned Bob and Ben and I found that can wait right now let's see what pointers we can pick up about honesty well one thing I learned to be honest you have to find the truth that's not always easy I taught Bob takes something from Ben's locker and then I song buy an expensive pen it seemed he had stolen some money but you didn't know I'd stolen it that's right and you didn't even give me the benefit of the doubt no you should have asked yourself some questions Jim is it logical to think that Bob would steal so the job with your past experience of the way Bob operates Jim your physics teacher might say that you formed your hypothesis and jump to your conclusion you skipped that all-important part of testing your hypothesis sometimes it takes a lot of testing to find the truth but now can we draw up another general principle about honesty I'd say the next step is pretty obvious tell the truth is it that simple no I don't think it is simple and certainly the way I described Bob slinking in and taking the money that wasn't the truth at least not the way Jim told me the story maybe it was my fault I wasn't careful to tell you exactly what I saw let's call it express the truth we mean being careful of what you say is the truth and also being careful when you talk about a thing be sure that people understand what you mean but there's something more to being honest than just telling the truth what I promised Jim not to say anything and then went to you intending to talk wasn't that dishonest and what about me maybe I wasn't honest when I broke it up and wouldn't let him tell we said at the start that honesty often involves conflicts let's think back it seems to me Terry that your intentions were honorable your conflict was between Europe pledge to Jim and your own sense of doing what was right you believed you were doing the right thing but Nick stop sure there's a good deal to be said for his intentions - he was thinking of the good of the team not that I'm saying he was right it ever came about that we had the harbor unknown thief on our team and ordered to win games I just I wasn't thinking very deep but I could just see the whole season blowing up and Isis maybe maybe inside I didn't really believe Bob was a thief inside I think that's the clue to this bigger thing we're seeking how's this know yourself examine your motives know what you're doing and why you're doing it if your intentions aren't honest then your deed can't be completely honest I guess this is the time for nepata see when I came in to tell mr. Barker about Bob I started by saying certain things what I said and what I was really thinking were two different things it was something like this mr. Bakker there's something you want to know about one of your boys there's something I want you to know about one of your boys the boys won't say anything so I feel I must be honest and tell you I wish I didn't have to be the one to tell but I want to be sure that you find out about Bob Foreman and what do you do I can just see it okay Bob and Terry will become the regular center my Terry I think is the chance he'll be the star of the team that mr. Branca is the real reason why I had to tell you whether or not I thought I was telling the truth my motive being what it was I was not being honest thanks rose this hasn't been easy I know but you've learned a lesson a lesson in honesty honesty to yourself and honesty to others that lesson or stand you in good stead all your life I think we've all learned a good lesson I've always heard that honesty is the best policy now I'm catching on to why that's so it isn't always easy to be honest but when you have a problem involving your own honesty it'll help you to remember these three pointers know yourself be sure of your intentions the motives behind what you're doing and saying find the truth tested in the light of past experience and by checking in every way you can and express the truth make sure you say what you mean to say and make sure your meaning is clear to your listeners now Bob tell us the truth what really happened well as for that fancy pen I'd want to just such a pen for a long time and I bought it with money my aunt gave me for my birthday and as for what happened in the locker room well it was this way as soon as I finish dressing I hit it out into the gym then I remembered something and came back I looked around for Ben but he wasn't there so I went to his locker you see Ben had been doing sound effects for the school radio program that morning and he had bought something we'd need in practice gee that's all honest [Music] you somebody commented like is this film running in slow motion cuz everybody talking very slow and their voices or deep um no it's it's running at the right speed I think I mean it's possible that the speed got shifted but it's not very likely yeah anyways you know Cornette pacing is and a lot of educational film pacing is like mom so yeah I don't know that's a good question though oh and thank you William for the coffee the film didn't seem so slow because I was caffeinated alright this next film is about the Seattle itself it will not only carry out instructions you dial into it it will also remember instructions you provided earlier these memory features will offer many convenient services I'm sure you'll be delighted with for one thing you'll be able to reach frequently called numbers by dialing only two digits all you'll have to do is give the telephone company a list of the numbers you dial most frequently the electronic brains memory they'll do the rest to see how it works please watch the screen let's see all right now let's say you want to call your mother who lives in Des Moines you called her fairly often so the telephone company has assigned five three as your special number for making this call when you dial the 5 and the 3 the electronic central offices brain says oh oh something special searches its memory for what those two digits represent and dials the area code plus whole number in Des Moines for you hello grandma ever been invited out for an evening and had to turn it down because you're expecting an extra special call well the electronic central office will solved that problem for you too when you do go out it will be a simple matter to have your calls transferred all you'll have to do is dial a special code which tells the equipment frame you want your calls transferred and then dial the telephone number where you can be reached our amazing electronic central office we'll take it from there hello no this isn't Diane its Linda what guess this is Jim Morton I was calling Diane Brown oh yes she's here she had her call transferred to my house hi Jim and what about those times someone has tried to call you and your line is busy we thought of that too fine Sarah that's fine I'll have the information for you at the meeting next may be able to call home and automatically turn off the oven or from a public telephone a couple of hundred miles away turn on your home air conditioner and have the house nice and cool when you return from your hot trip it may even be possible to call and water the lawn during that dry spell when you are many miles away on vacation some fantastic doesn't it but it is all possible because of the basic research our scientists and engineers at the Bell Telephone laboratories are doing to make your service better day by day from their work has come breakthrough after breakthrough in science providing the intricate devices that lie at the heart of your telephone service of tomorrow through the invention of better things we are trying very hard to give you the kind of telephone service you want and need and we think you'll agree after seeing the many exhibits we have here there is no end to telephone progress now or in century 21 [Music] on a needle up high you can look through the eye and you see yes you're seeing it all as the present unfold what the future be you're a lady fascinating see the art shows what the thoroughfare on the boulevards leading everywhere ride a rickshaw have dine on caviar you can tell a forest are it's a wonderful ledge on a beautiful stage demonstrated for you been created for you it's just the part [Music] the thrilling star [Music] so whoa Facebook's copyright sniffers decided that some background music at the beginning that last film was enough to actually stop stream so there you go that's why I had to stop it so I apologized to Facebook people I restarted it but forward-thinking people at Facebook did not want you to hear that copyrighted music anyways we're back love that film I love any film that kind of shows us what the future is going to be like from the past to see what they got right in you know the telephone has has morphed so much and changed so much and as far as its usability and importance to us and so it's kind of fascinating to see the direction that they wanted it to go now what's also interesting is eighteen now is not the same AT&T as it was it was AT&T now is actually singular singular was a splinter cell phone group that bought AT&T so it's a different group of people and singular was pretty horrible and horrible basically they needed a name change so they're like well we'll just go with AT&T so I had a friend who worked at the AT&T archives and actually digitized a bunch of film and video for them and it was kind of fascinating alright this next film had a written label on it that says warning dialog contains potentially offensive terms that was like whoa I gotta watch this the name of the film is ABCs of film direction and it's made by the Calvin workshop and if you can remember Calvin R is the film company that made all those Alcoa management films trouble with women what else the grapevine personality conflict etc etc they also made some really great kind of funny films oh also Friesen was a Calvin show they made some pretty funny films because I used to do this workshop and so this is part of the workshop and the workshop was for people that were making industrial films other people and so this was their way to say like well this is how you make a film and wood so this is a particularly ABCs of film direction it shows like the different aspects of you know cameras the type of camera shots and all that and it the see if you can figure out what the offensive words are they're not traditionally offensive but I think that it raised somebody's hackles when they showed it and it certainly probably garnered classroom responses which is why I was labeled as such so here's ABC's at film direction [Music] the purpose of this film is to review some of the basic techniques and devices film directors use to obtain certain results or effects on the screen we call them the ABCs of film direction probably some of the first terms you heard when you became interested in motion pictures with these long shot medium shot and close-up what do they mean well they are relative terms because they depend on the size and nature of the subject to be filmed in the long shot the camera is generally some distance away and there is considerable area around the subject for instance this is a long shot of a building we see the entire building and enough area around it to establish its location in relation to its surroundings moving closer we obtain less area and it becomes a medium shot less than the whole building none of its surroundings moving still closer we have a close-up only a small area of the structure but now we introduce another situation the closeup of the building now becomes a long shot of the man so we move in for a medium shot then to a close-up of his face we could go on and on the closeup of the man's face could be a long shot of his eye and again we would have to move in so you seem long medium and close-up shots our relative terms depending upon subject matter we obtain these various types of shots by three methods camera movement subject movement choice of lens now let's see how we use these in actual production first camera movement probably the simplest form of camera movement is the tilt or pan here the cameraman is photographing a lathe operation with the tripod head loosened he starts with the material in the lathe then tilts up for close-up of the operators face here's the way it will look on the screen the pan is useful in following action another use of the pan is in confined areas where it's impossible to move back far enough to include the whole area since the camera can be moved in an arc it's possible to include the entire area in one shot between scenes the camera can of course be picked up and carried from one position to another in order to get the desired area [Music] or the camera can be mounted on something movable such as a crane or dolly this enables us to move from a long shot to a medium shot to a close-up all in a single camera take the thing to remember is that on a moving shot such as this you have to follow focus as the subjects distance from the camera changes otherwise you get this effect all right let's look at another way of changing area by subject movement here the camera is mounted on a dolly but in this case its position is locked instead of the camera moving toward me I'll move toward it and we'll see what happens this is a long or establishing shot now I walk halfway to the camera or to a medium shot moving still closer to the camera results in a close-up remember you must follow focus as the subjects distance from the camera changes now let's see our choice of lenses allows us to vary the area normally three lenses are used as standard equipment for 16 millimeter shooting the 25 millimeter lens is considered the normal lens it most nearly approximates the perspective of the human eye wide-angle lenses come in a variety of focal lengths this 17 and a half millimeter is a good choice when a longer focal length lens is desired the 50 millimeter is probably most widely used of course even longer focal lengths are available and are often useful but now let's see how we may use the three most common lenses to change both the areas covered and the perspective of the subject matter say a man is seated at the desk his secretary enters through a door in the flat to his right this is how such a scene would look when shot with a normal or 25 millimeter land at the start the lens is critically focused on the man as the girl enters a slight adjustment is made in order that she is in critical focus notice the depth of field and the relationship and focus between the man and the girl all right let's see what a wide-angle lens does for us notice the greater depth of field and also the change in perspective the foreground and the background are apparently more separated and the cept seems larger now the same scene with a 50 millimeter lens the area is reduced the perspective is changed the foreground and background seem to be closer together it is apparent that the depth of field has greatly decreased when focused on the man the girl is out of focus when we focus on the girl the foreground goes soft now let's look at a another type of lens commonly called the zoom lens because of its moveable elements the focal length can be varied simply by moving the lever with this particular lens we can change the focal length from seventeen and a half millimeter to seventy millimeter so let's just see what we can do with it same setup as before as the girl enters we zoom in for a medium close-up of her in the doorway as she walks to the desk we zoom back to the original area then again zoom in to end up with a close-up of her standing by the desk this ability of the camera to be moved and to change areas makes the motion picture the versatile flexible medium that it is it gives the director the power of choosing his distance from the subject and allows him to concentrate the audience's attention on whatever he wishes however this very flexibility creates some problems and the director must learn how to handle them in changing from one scene to another of a different area we must be careful to maintain orientation to keep the audience from becoming lost or confused at what they're looking at after a change of scene one way to keep them oriented is to maintain a continuity of action or movement to relate one scene to another now this is called action kind for example these two scenes may been shot hours apart yet the action appears smooth here's the way it was done the first scene is shot from this position notice the girl goes through the entire action in this long shot now the camera is moved into position for the close-up in this take the girl duplicates part of her action in the previous scene this is called overlapping the action the editor will check the action in both seams and select the place where he will make the cut he then splices the two scenes together when they are projected they will look like this the cut appears smooth and the action continuous this device of overlapping action is really quite simple and most directors learn it automatically every director must do it if he plans to make action cuts now there's another rule about audience orientation that's not quite so easy to understand is overlapping action but it's just as important try to visualize every scene you plan to shoot as a sort of drawing or blueprint [Music] then imagine a line drawn through the center of the action this is called the imaginary line or the mid line it separates front stage from back stage you can shoot in a 180 degree arc from here to here to here and the action will cut properly and you will maintain orientation let's see how this works in actual practice consider the road as our imaginary line the cameraman may shoot the approaching car from here from here and from here in other words in a 180 degree arc cut together the action looks natural on the screen and the movement of the car appears continuous but let's see what would happen if the cameraman were to cross the center line he first shoots the car traveling from north to south from this side of the road now he decides to get another shot of it from the opposite side of the road [Music] the cholera number is still traveling in the same direction north to south but what happens when these two seams are cut together while the car was actually traveling in the same direction in both shots we got the impression that it had turned around and started in the opposite direction because of the camera viewpoint the same thing applies when we photograph two people on a set we can shoot from any position within the 180 degree mark and they remain in the correct position in relation to the camera but say we shoot first from here then from here we are in trouble by crossing our line the people appear reversed and the audience is confused now you may ask can we ever cross our imaginary line the answer is yes if we do it during the scene here we establish our characters in their position the cameramen dollies past them crossing the imaginary line now the audience will accept the reversed position because they were present when the change was made I hope this gives you a little better understanding on this matter of orientation now there's one more little device that directors use I want to mention here it's probably one of the most valuable in his whole bag of tricks because it allows him to compress time and space here's an example let's say we want to move a man from here to here all right let's try it [Music] that took exactly 28 seconds or 17 feet of film that's far too long unless there was some very definite reason to show the complete action in this case there was not so let's try speeding the action up like this [Music] obviously under cranking is not the way to do it unless of course we're trying for a comic effect so let's see how angle changes might allow us to eliminate part of the action we established the man walking toward the camera then away from us now we insert a shot of his feet then show him taking the last few steps up the stairway so we have reduced our screen time to 17 seconds and we can reduce it even more by using an optical effect which indicates the passage of time we have him start his walk as before we now dissolve as he completes the action we have now managed to reduce our screen time from 28 seconds to less than 10 seconds audiences have become conditioned to accept dissolves and fades as a device indicating the passage of time they will just as readily accept the cutaway or insert shot and the experienced director will make full use of both of them these have been just a few of the simple rules of moviemaking to the beginner they may appear complicated but in practice they are quite simple and easily learned every director should know them so well that he applies them almost automatically there are many excellent books on the subject which covered in much more detail than has been possible in this short film however we hope what you have seen may prove helpful if you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the calvin staff thank you [Music] so what was the offensive term that garnered a note to be handwritten on the can it was girl close-up of the man and the girl way at a you know so as we've seen with other Calvin films they would refer to their employed female employees as girls and you know everybody else was a man and so this just kept with that and of course it doesn't seem right now and it probably wasn't right back then so yeah all that great information and I'm sure students were just like what there's obviously an adult woman an adult man and so why is it man and girl so there you go Calvin this next film I feel like this is from the 80s but I don't have a year on it but it's a one of these open-ended films for managers so it's called button button enjoy [Music] uh hold on a minute Steve okay Jones sit down now I'll be with you in a minute listen Steve I promise you we'll have it by the morning okay okay guy I'll see you well it must be pretty important to be called in to my supervisors office I've still got seven pieces of property to check out you're damn right it's important anytime I get a call like the one I had a while ago from Archibald we get hair oblems I knew he's right he's got a legitimate complaint you know who he is he's just head of the Taxpayers Association that's all what the hell are you wearing that thing for what am I wearing it for you know what it means it means me our money and our paychecks that's no excuse for parading it in front of a taxpayer especially that guy Archibald that damn associations on our neck all the time about taxes then you had to rile him up oh come off it so what if he's against it I happen to be bored not not the only one our unions for it so why why can't I wear it if I want to I'll tell you why because this is the hottest issue in town the mayor has just come out against cb1 the tax payers Association is opposed to it and they're not the only ones can you come along look what's so bad about wearing this button so it says support cb1 our guys wear all kinds of buttons smile buttons football buttons half of them wear the American flag that's different there's nothing to complain about there then what about the time the city decided to build a stadium I know a lot of people who didn't favor that this department had everybody in his cousin supporting that one bumper stickers buttons and I don't remember you complaining about that but that was different the mayor was for it and so was the City Council but this tax issue has everybody split down the middle there's a hassle and we got to stay out of it so Oh with the button so nothing I'm a citizen I've got rights like everybody else it happens to be important to me and my family happens to be important to this department and to the mayor to how well we get on with the public look Jimmy the council will soon be voting on this it's just a matter of a few days why don't you be reasonable me why don't you be reasonable this button goes where I go okay if that's the way you want it as long as you wear that button you stay home until this issue has been voted on you take this attitude you'll have to take the consequences I'm also writing a strong letter of reprimand it'll go into your personnel file and stay there look I've got a legitimate right to wear this you guys are always trying to keep us quiet just because I'm willing to speak out you pick on me I'm not standing still for this I'm gonna talk to the Stuart this is important to me big arguments can grow out of little things it seems innocent enough just a button on the lapel of a property Assessor for the city tax office a public employee doing his daily job but just how big a dispute is it Jimmy Jones is on his way to see the Stuart his union representative among other things the Stuart helps to protect the rights of workers in their jobs and he sees to it that the provisions of the contract between the Union and the public agency are enforced now that doesn't mean every dispute can be resolved only by looking at the contract other factors may be involved past practice could be important or there may be other issues that relate to this situation Jimmy Jones is showing the steward the button it says support cb1 no big deal that could mean almost anything except in this case it's a hot issue before the City Council with the mayor opposed to it it's one the department wants no part of until it's settled it's also important to Jimmy Jones and he doesn't want to stay out of it but he has another problem now he is suspended until the issue is resolved or until he removes the button without pay and if the written reprimand sticks it can't help him on the job most collective bargaining contracts or agreements contain procedures which make resolution possible without damaging the relationship it's called a grievance procedure just how far the case of Jimmie Jones and his button will go remains to be seen Jones and the Stewart have been talking it over and the decision will be made on whether they have a grievable complaint if the decision is yes they will go back to the supervisor and try to settle it informally that's usually the first step such conduct very seriously interferes with the discharge of his duties as a consequence of this action I have put mr. Jones on leave without pay until such time as the cb1 issue is resolved or until mr. Jones removes the button I'm also writing this letter of reprimand oh yes they're waiting who's with Jones Carlos so the unions in on this huh okay send him in we'll get back to this Donna that was Jones and the Union steward wanting to talk about it I don't know why there's nothing else I can do that was a quick turnaround for you Jones Carlos I gather you think this is a union matter it certainly is mr. Samuels we came by to talk to you about this yesterday but you were out the action you took it serious I hope we can settle it that's a good cause that Jim is supporting I can't believe you're against him on this he's right mr. Samuels that cb1 issue is my bread and butter it's a damn good idea sure beats half the crummy stuff the City Council comes out with you may think it's a good idea but it happens the mayor's opposed to it you know you can get this department into a lot of trouble by stirring things up with that lousy button I'm damned if I'm gonna let it happen he's got a right to speak out mr. Samuels he's got a right to hold to his own beliefs that's what we have a contract for but he can't do that if it interferes with his work he can't be stirring up the citizens on an issue in which this department is so heavily involved help we assess property for taxes that's Jimmy's work now it's a hard enough job without steaming up the public by wearing that button you'd think everybody was up in arms what's a little griping it's more than a little I told them that but would get him into trouble as a matter of fact I thought he took it off after we received a couple of complaints come on Carlos this is a public agency we have rules we have to deal with the public and that means we have to be careful and sensitive till we need their cooperation careful and sensitive look I do my job but I don't have to pussyfoot around I say when something's worth it stand up and fight maybe that's why you're I'm not picking on you but you've got that association guy all up in arms and then you don't even follow the rules when you're told about it we all work for one boss the mayor let's not forget that now what's that supposed to mean it means this department has to follow the policies of the mayor's office I have to follow them too you know that that column I write for the son I have to be in line with policy I can't go off half-cocked on my own and neither can you maybe what you need is a good union mr. Samuels like Jimmy has now we've come out for CD 1 and our union is going to stand behind him now why don't you just drop the whole thing and let Jimmy go back to work well okay if he agrees not to wear that button I'll forget all about it he'll know this fellow violates policy and then he refuses a direct order you don't give me any other choice my decision sticks Jimmy Jones and his Stewart now have a decision to make the informal discussions between Jones Carlos and Samuels the first step of the grievance procedure in their contract has left the situation right where it was there was no settlement they all wanted an agreement but apparently it was too tough to resolve at this point both sides appear adamant whether they remain so may depend on what they discover as each side looks at the whole problem if the union is to pursue the issue beyond this point it will be a decision of the Stewart in consultation with Jimmy Jones and others they're talking it over I think we'd better go easy with Samuels Jimmy Samuels considers me a hot hand just because I stand up for what I believe I always have but I'm not the only guy to wear this button they've got to move with the sanitation department and nobody over there is complaining about it Carlos I think these guys are at for my ass and we ought to show I think we got a pretty good taste Jimmy damn right we have really pisses me off just because I wear a bucket they didn't put the screws to old Charlie Rich when he put that both his beautiful sticker on his car got a lot of laughs but some skinhead could have objected yeah we'll check everything out wasn't that taxpayers association guy the only one who complained you didn't get any other flack did you hey I got a couple but it was nothing to get in an uproar about hey there's Apple hey since you told me about Jimmy's case yesterday it's all over at the office have you seen Samuels yet from the looks on you guys faces you've seen him and didn't get anywhere right we didn't settle a damn thing but I think Jimmy and I've got some good arguments Heather where we've been in cases like this before well not exactly close enough I really think they ought to check into the time Archie Hamilton had that run-in with the higher-ups Hamilton who's he Connors maybe that was before you became a Stewart well this Archie comes in when they dressed in a special outfit long flowing robes the hum bit I don't know all of the details it had something to do with a religious call but his supervisor ordered him home to change he went right to his steward and they made the higher-ups back down oh come well it had something to do with religious freedom I really think you ought to check into it there may be something you can tie into Jimmy's case yeah sure Ethel we're going to have to backstop on this one Carlos and I'm not so sure it's going to be easy as it seems for one thing you know the mayor's stuck his neck out on this one but if we can show that management has let a thing like this happen in the past then we have the past practice clause in the contract to back us up anyway it's a free country I may not to be able to say what he thinks you can bet your bottom dollar they're gonna throw the management rights closet up well don't worry if you have any problems give me a call hey I heard about Jimmy's running with Samuels are you guys going to the mat on this it looks like it Harry it reminds me of the time the mayor pushed the bond issue for a new stadium the department went all out on it I said I wanted no part of the campaign I'm new sports not besides I don't like bumper stickers anyway and what happened I didn't put their stupid bumper stickers on my car they said okay maybe they didn't like it but what the hell thanks Harry that could be one for our side we may need you no Jimmy we've got to be prepared do you remember what Ethel said they'll throw that management rights Clause at it you know the right to assign personnel evaluate performance hire fire all that stuff let them talk about performance of duties I do my job I wear this Buckner has nothing to do with it you're damn right I'm sure your personnel record will be okay as far as I know you've stayed out of trouble haven't you maybe they think you sound off a little bit too much but they look damn silly if they try to hang that on you Jimmy we've got ten days to file a formal grievance I'll get back to you I've still got some checking to do okay we may have the makings of a full-fledged grievance the suspension is in effect and the letter of reprimand has been received by Jones the Union has ten days in this contract to decide whether to proceed with the grievance the number of days vary with each contract and some contracts may even be silent on the time factor if the union decides to press the grievance it must be in writing generally a printed form is use for this the kind of information included in the grievance form is essentially the same in all cases it contains the grievance name when and where the incident occurred what contract provisions might apply in this case and so on and it tells what remedy the grievant and the Union are seeking with the submission of the written form by the Union this matter has evolved into a formal grievance from now on each step of the way by the grievant and the Union on one side and management on the other is written out and on the record some cases can be tough and this one seems to be the parties have tried to reach a settlement to keep the dispute from going further up the ladder they failed and the Union has decided to push the grievance good morning mr. samurai Kathy mr. styler is expecting you but don't go in there right now there's an irate citizen yeah no hurry what's the good citizen complaining about but that kind of attitude no wonder my taxes are going up now look if you forget it forget it there goes another constituent I sometimes wonder about this job come on in Sam today seems to be our day for trouble well I'm sorry to add this to your day John I didn't think it would get this far I didn't think Jones would be so unreasonable I must say one I wish we could have avoided somehow maybe we can stop it here that that's why I wanted to talk to you about it you know we do allow some latitude when it comes to buttons and bumper stickers that sort of thing that's right John when it doesn't conflict with policy but Jones violated policy and then he refused to obey a direct order do you think the suspension and the letter of reprimand were too harsh I mean I know Jones is considered to be a hothead but are you sure that was justified absolutely I warned him a couple of times before wearing that button is like waving a red flag that last complaint I got was one I just couldn't ignore and he wasn't the only one I got a call from Quinn the councilman in that ward and I heard from some other taxpayer Association members who'd heard about it and I heard about it from the bear you know John I offered to forget about the whole thing if only he take off the button it was just a matter of a couple of days till the council voted on it but he refused what would you have done he's still refused probably the same thing you did well let's see where that leaves us now there's no doubt he acted against policy that's right Jones acted unwisely to put it mildly even though that button was floating around all over the place Jones was the only one who wore it in our department absolutely now the Union points out in this grievance that sanitation workers have been wearing this I can't see that is a valid argument they're not concerned with assessing taxes nobody cared what these guys did they sure care here whether it's me and my column for the Sun or Jones and his button now this thing may go deeper than I thought you know I'm glad I sent a copy of the grievance the city personnel the director should know it were involved in let me get a copy of the contract in here miss Abernathy will you bring in a copy of the union contract I think I know just about everything in the contracts Sam but I want to be sure since I'll have to write the reply I've done some checking there's a memo coming to you on it it's a mixed bag John but there's no doubt about our authority it's all right there in the management rights clause matter of fact that's what I based my action out in the first place well I think so too but I want to be absolutely certain that it's spelled out management directs the workforce evaluates performance besides how operations are conducted has the right to discipline suspend discharge it's all here it all fits but it does say any rights and benefits already accorded won't be rescinded by this contract I know what the Union claims that the department has let other employees do the same thing that we're just picking on Jones cuz he's a loudmouth they're even bringing up the case of that guy who wore religious robes to work I gotta admit he didn't fit the department dress code I was involved in that decision it was just for one day and I figured it was a matter of religious freedom so I overruled the order to send him home to change but that doesn't apply here we've always had a strict dress code and we've penalized people before but with Jones it's a it's a violation of policy on a very sensitive matter and insubordination it strikes at the very heart of our Authority's management I agree John but they sure don't see it that way it's especially important for us we are not a private employer not only is the mayor opposed but this after all is the tax department we can't have people running off half-cocked on their own tax issues it all has to go to manage authority when you add it all up I don't see where the Union has a leg to stand on oh that may be right but we'll hear them out Sam we're obligated under the contract to meet with them by the end of the week that'll be within the seven day limit for responding to the grievance I want to know is why are they making such a big deal out of this they're gonna have to come up with something more than I've already seen I'll have my secretary set up a meeting maybe maybe there's some way this can be resolved I don't want it to go any further if I can prevent it and you agree mr. Samuels action should be rescinded you must be kidding I haven't seen the evidence yet just a minute mr. Samuels wait a minute this is no time for a shouting match mr. Schuyler I must say Jimmy doesn't deserve that punishment he had every right to wear that button I can't say that I agree with you mrs. Markham I got a call from the mayor Samuels got several calls including one from Quinn everybody was up in arms it was his right look at the facts Jones was already warned about parading around with a button on a controversial tax issue he got some homeowners all riled up and was asked to remove the button on a number of occasions even after that mr. Samuels agreed to forget the whole thing if he would just take the button off and he still refused so he wore a button supporting that issue just like a lot of other people where all sorts of buttons and what happened mr. Samuel suspended him and then wrote a letter of reprimand just because he was standing up for his rights all over a couple of complaints well it may not seem important to you now because the council has voted on the tax code but those complaints caused this department a lot of problems and we're not about to let that happen again we don't like having the mayor on our neck sure the tax issue is settled that's just my point I think you're overreacting Jimmy has been wearing that button for weeks well been making property assessments most people didn't even bother about it so you got a few gripes all of this is only because that fellow Archibald's started it all up and then others chimed in lots of people have worn buttons look at the sanitation department the same thing Jimmy is wearing the Sanitation Department doesn't handle tax matters as far as I know and they don't deal with the public on Edina we do and it's a very sensitive business now mr. Samuels told Jones a number of times to remove the button warned him that if he didn't he would get into trouble now it seems to me unless you have something new to offer I would have to reject this grievance we have some other things to bring up mr. styler what does that mean well for one thing I'm sure you remember the bus driver incident it got a lot of attention one of the riders complained that the driver was wearing a black power button the clenched fist complained or not he was allowed to keep it on I can't say that I agree with that decision mrs. Martin but it wasn't mine to make this one is and I don't see how they can ignore the interest of this department and this insubordination but his refusal was only because the order was unjustified Jimmy has the same freedom of speech as any other citizen not in this kind of case this is different now if you want to chant you would have found out there was a similar case a couple of years ago at the city health clinic a receptionist got a complaint about a button she was wearing a anti-abortion birth right right to life something like that well I don't remember that well one of your Union stewards was in on it mrs. Markham when the hospital got a complaint it took it up with the steward who helped to persuade the woman to remove the button and she did now that was a controversial issue just like this one well that was before I became chief steward I would have never agreed to a thing like that that woman had a perfect right to wear that button not at all you know mrs. Markham the contract contains a management rights clause and that says among other things that management determines the method means and the personnel necessary to conduct its business now management also has the right to regulate employee conduct while on the job especially if it affects his ability to do his job now I would agree that the right to the employer and the employee must be balanced but Jones overstepped that's right it's our policy to keep this agency from becoming embroiled in public controversy say do you remember when the woman in our accounting section had that candidate sign on the roof of her automobile it was during the last political campaign what about it well she was violating the city rule about public employees politicking on the job that's correct and we took action the law was barred from the municipal parking lot as long as that sorry remain in a car and the candidate happened to be her own brother-in-law well that's not comparable to Jimmy's case the discussion goes on all the arguments and evidence are being brought up and thrashed out at this meeting the parties will try to resolve it through some accommodation that will satisfy Samuel and Jones and management's interests as well if they fail to resolve the dispute the union may carry it to the next step in the grievance procedure there will be more meetings similar to the one you have just seen others will be involved and there will be further investigations as both sides pursue the issue even while the grievance is being considered the cause of the grievance has been decided how the council decided that matter is not important to the resolution of this grievance what is important is that the grievance remains and must be resolved this involves deciding the relative merits of Jones free speech and the city's public policy needs also we must remember that Jimmy Jones was suspended without pay until the council decided the issue he also has a letter of reprimand in his file he wants to get paid for those few days lost and he wants the letter of reprimand removed his file what is to be the fate of Jimmy's grievance we had no conclusion to this the button case that's for you to decide [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] that was a monumental film indeed so I apologize I forgot that film goes on too long it is yeah anyways some people notice the Wow and flutter that is this was actually scanned on not one of my machines but an another person scanner and it had if the film was warped it would have a weird tension things over so you'd hear it during the music but yeah they don't resolve it and the thing is it's like if you if you looked at the billable hours of all the people who spend time kind of sitting and arguing about this if you took that back took that bill back to the person that initially complained saying look how much taxpayer dollars you spent on this you know what they say like oops or I need to be right you know let's let's who knows anyways thanks so much for tuning in today we'll be here tomorrow at one o'clock and also towards the end of the week I'm gonna try and experiment I'm not gonna be here I'm gonna be somewhere else and so I'm gonna try to maybe broadcast from somewhere else or at least have a back-up plan and I'm trying to investigate that right now but thanks for tuning in if you liked it you know click like subscribe you can certainly buy me a coffee or you can go to a Viacom and buy DVDs or watch previous things that we've uploaded thanks so much for your comments and I will see you again tomorrow I'm ready take care bye bye
