oh technology can you guys see us is it working now can you see us two people talking um hello hello we need some feedback yeah we've been talking to ourselves now for 10 minutes so so we have no idea wait skip i don't know i see you on twitch oh hello all right oh all right so it's not like it's not hard enough to do a show like this to embrace more than 100 years of technology i had to keep throwing extra crap at it all right so i'm here with my guest irene moon and we went through a whole thing where i thought we were live yeah i know i told you guys everything about me already so his problem was here we go obs software um i was streaming which was causing a conflict with restream and i'm using restream to bring people on blah blah blah anyways irene what do you do where are you at what's going on okay here we go again the second time will be the charm uh so i'm an entomologist i study insects um i'm at the university of california santa barbara um so sunny california this is part of my lab here um but i also um sing songs about insects and um uh do performances about bugs so i love insects using old films and um one of the things that y'all missed already was skip and i reminiscing about the first time we met um am i any relation to erwin moon no but um that is what i was hoping i'm also not related to lucy moon if anybody knows lucy so there's many of us moons out there but i use old school films and so skip and i met at a film conference what was the name of it skip i can't it's the orphans film symposium orphans film symposium and uh and he was like oh i live in raleigh and i was like oh i'm from raleigh north carolina warren moon no no jonathan moon no no yes insect performance art so i heard you actually that you were before i met you because you were supposedly doing something with planaria oh right which was really i was like oh my god that's so awesome i wrote a song called positively pleasant planarian so you actually did you have plenary and a microscope and see that i thought that was really great and i'm sorry i've missed that show um but anyway so uh we've been long-time friends you live now in santa barbara yep and uh so i wanted to do a show with you where we would um pull some of my films uh traditionally i show films that are in texas pests uh and then you know we all talk about ddt and all that but uh i figured that i wanted since i have so many films about insects and you know you do so much with insects as far as education and your work and your artistic work that i wanted to show some films that weren't about insects as pests just insects um and then we can use that as a ground to talk about other stuff so the first film we're going to watch is called adaptation for survival about insects and you know somebody is that me is called adaptation for survival is that you um irene what are you watching and then yeah that was me i was trying to get back on the chat sorry everybody [Music] all right so we're gonna go back uh i'm gonna put you in the green in the punishment box and uh we're gonna use technology again to get us back um all right uh [Music] foreign [Music] all animals have to eat and some animals eat insects to survive or stay alive many species of insects have had to develop ways of escaping from enemies that would eat them [Music] insects such as this dragonfly can simply fly away from danger [Music] some insects that do not fly escape capture by moving quickly you can see why these young locusts are called hoppers bed bugs live in dark places when exposed to light they hide water insects such as this pond skater avoid their enemies by moving quickly across the surface of water some can even swim underwater but there are other insects which have no means of protection ants are easily attacked and eaten by their enemies but the species as a whole survives because there are so many of them aphids have soft completely unprotected bodies but they reproduce so quickly that losses to the species are continually replaced the aphids main enemy the ladybug survives because any animal which tries to eat it will find that it has a very bitter taste the ladybug's enemies soon learn to recognize its orange and black color and they stay away from it the beautiful colors of the peacock butterfly help to attract a mate [Music] but notice how one of the eyes on the wings has been bitten by a bird these eyes probably frighten away small birds and make larger birds peck at the insect's wings rather than its body [Music] few birds would try to eat the caterpillar of the robin moth the unappetizing knobs on its back look something like bitter tasting ladybugs this caterpillar also discourages enemies by its appearance but for extra protection it can sting any animal which touches it because its hairs are covered with a poisonous chemical [Music] we all know how a wasp protects itself over the many years of evolution most forms of animal life have come to connect black and yellow stripes with the sting of the wasp the honey bee also advertises the fact that it can sting it too has a pattern of black and yellow stripes but there are some insects such as hoverflies which cannot sting but still show the same warning stripes this type of protection by which harmless insects imitate the appearance of more dangerous insects is called mimicry some insects protect themselves by changing the shape of their bodies to make them seem more frightening to their enemies when the devil's coach horse beetle is in danger it turns up its abdomen it not only looks bigger it almost looks like the poisonous scorpion [Music] for many insects the most dangerous time of their life cycle is during the process of metamorphosis when the insect changes from larval to adult form during the last days of their larval stage some insects spin a protective case or cocoon where they can pupate in safety the caterpillar which made this cocoon has come out as an adult silk moth [Music] underwater the larvae of the caddisfly make protective cases for many different materials which are stuck together with saliva the protective cases of these two larvae also make it hard to see them this is called camouflage [Music] in fact there are many insects which survive simply because they are so hard to see [Music] this prickly stick insect is almost perfectly hidden against its background the walking stick insect's body looks very much like the twigs and branches on which it lives its legs too could easily be mistaken [Music] all right we'll bring irene back from the uh insect mound that was a great film so um i noticed you've been answering questions on facebook but the youtube people have no idea oh right yeah i mean unfortunately there's not a way to propagate everything i thought there would be a way i can do it but as a host but for some reason i can't so not everyone can see this very exciting chat in collective chat that i'm looking at here on facebook yeah um so anyways um you addressed the question um about aphids being born pregnant right so um uh aphids are pretty amazing insects they're in um the order hemiptera so they're considered um more buggy than other bugs so um within the hamifter are the true bugs that was another question uh in the chat was um what's the difference between true bugs and just bug um uh tree bugs are in the order hamitra and hamitra have piercing sucking mouth parts they basically have hypodermic needles for mouths and they stick those needles into plants and suck plant juices um so aphids are in the hamitra and um they have this crazy life cycle like a lot of insects have crazy life cycles but they go through a period of uh reproduction um called parthogenetic reproduction or parthenogenesis and um which basically is um uh they don't they're all females and um they're not born pregnant um but they also don't need sperm or males uh to create a next generation um so uh so they uh it's kind of a little bit like cloning in some ways so they can just um uh self fertilize and um create a next generation um so uh so when you see aphids on a plant and it's just a whole bunch of them and like one day you go there and there's like five and the next day it's like 50. um it's because they're um performing this asexual reproduction and then at one or two times a year um males are produced and then they have a sexual reproduction frenzy uh and travel the males are winged and so they travel from place to place so um yeah interesting life cycle um is it aphids that ants um kind of keep as cattle or is it some other insect that i'm confused yeah so um so aphids uh suck these plant juices um and they have because there's a lot of water in plant juices they have this crazy digestive system the digestive system is they are tribbles it's so true yeah liquid equals tribbles absolutely um so they have this crazy circular digestive system uh because there's so much water they have to ex get the the good stuff the sugars from the plant and stuff out of all that water it's kind of like if you lived entirely on fruit juice and energy drinks and um you would just be peeing all the time and so aphids it's kind of the same they have this sort of circular system to sort of concentrate the foods in the plants but then they exude a little bit um through some anal secretions and the ants tend aphids uh for that little tasty treat and um so uh because it's sugar water um and so so they poop sugar water and the ants love it and the ants love it and in exchange the ants defend viciously defend aphids um like they're their own pets so ladybugs and other things that are a great biological control agents um uh and that like to eat aphids um if those aphids are being tended by ants there's less of a chance of being eaten by a ladybug because you have your aunt friend uh helping you out wow all right um so uh the next one we have set up is a grass blade jungle and this is for little kids to kind of show them like you know their backyard or their lawn is actually filled with insects and filled with life and it's like little ecosystems um so let's go ahead and watch that all right we're going back in the box [Music] uh [Music] almost any backyard or vacant lot or open field appears to be a jungle when you get down close to the ground [Music] in the shady recesses of shrubs and bushes and deep in thick great lumps a teeming world of small animals is living in this grass-blade jungle it offers interesting rewards to anyone who explores it with a sharp eye and a magnifying here we find a host of little animals most of which belong to the phylum arthropoda in the animal kingdom the arthropoda division includes the small animals whose skeletons are actually the outside layers of their bodies this formation is called an exoskeleton it must be shed periodically and replaced with a new one as the animal grows arthropods also have jointed legs and bodies which are joined in segments there are several groups of animals within the arthropod division the largest of these groups is the insects it's easy to tell true insects from other arthropods because most of the adults have wings and all of them have six legs let's observe the lives of some common insects almost every one of them possesses some unusual characteristic that challenges our imaginations for example the worker bee collects nectar and makes it into honey wasps were making pulp paper nests long before the art of paper making was known to man there are many ways in which animals have adapted to their environment the praying mattis looks like a twig on the bush where it hunts thus its victims are fooled the delicate moth often has colors and markings that blend with its resting place protective coloration helps to hide many animals from their enemies some species like the beetles have hard shell coats to help protect them from birds and flesh-eating insects some insects like the grasshopper and the caterpillar and insect larvae have developed into specialized eating mechanisms that feed upon all varieties of plant life small but greedy these plant eaters multiply so rapidly that they would soon devour all plant life so in nature's way controls have been created to prevent this from happening insects like the praying mantis have developed into specialized hunting mechanisms to devour the plant eaters thus a balance in nature is maintained the long strong four legs of the mattis are equipped with many sharp spurs for catching and holding its victims another example of adaptation the ants like their relatives the bees and the wasps are social inhabit and are the most highly developed of all insects they are also nature's workers some ants actually herd and milk tiny green aphids aphids are plant-eating insects slightly larger than the head of a common pen they can be observed closely only through a magnifying with tube-like mouth parts aphids feed upon the cell sap of plants sucking up more than they can digest the excess sap a delicacy for ants passes out of their bodies through tubes in their backs to milk the aphids the ants stroke their backs until they release the sap which the ants take into their jaws and drink we have seen several common insects now let's look at another member of the arthropod division the millipede which is a diplopod millipedes are usually scavengers feeding mostly on decaying plant life which makes them beneficial to man they have two pairs of legs attached to each segment of their bodies a third member of the arthropod division is the centipede which is a chylopod it has one pair of legs attached to each segment of its body the centipede is a predatory hunter it has pincer like poison fangs near the head with which to quickly paralyze or kill its insect victim but nature's specialized hunters are not always successful this hungry centipede has blundered into an ant hill the ants defend their home in a seething mass of sharp jaws and burning stings in spite of its own powerful jaws in greater size the struggling centipede is unable to repel the swarming red ants while hundreds of ants fight to protect their invaded home others carry their eggs larvae and pupae to safety another group of arthropods is the crustacea that have crust like shells and generally live in water almost any overturned stone may reveal a host of such many-legged little creatures commonly called cell bugs or pill bugs they are not really true bugs because they have more than six legs ages ago they left the water to live in moist places upon the land spiders are still another class of arthropods they have eight legs and are called arachnids spiders prey upon insects but wait for their food to come to them this is the female black widow spider she usually has a red hourglass on her abdomen because she eats her mate you'll rarely see the much smaller male all creatures fear this black killer this growing cricket pale and weak after shedding his old skin for a new and larger one instinctively seeks a dark place in which to hide the old cockroach quickly crawls back under his rock a young grasshopper waits until the black widow is gone before he cautiously crawls away and for good reason larger and stronger grasshoppers stand no chance against her attack for the black widow can capture any small creature unfortunate enough to get caught in her sticky web even the wasp with its long paralyzing stinger is no match for her once a prisoner is ensnared the black widow injects her venom and rapidly throws loops of strong silken thread about the body then she sucks the juice from the paralyzed victim most spiders are harmless and should be protected but not the black widow she is the only dangerously poisonous spider found throughout the united states during the summer she produces several egg sacs each containing from 200 to 500 eggs both the black widow and her egg sacs should be destroyed on site we have seen five classes of the phylum arthropoda a major division of the animal kingdom how many insects can you name we have seen a millipede centipede sow bugs and spiders these are not insects do you remember what they are exciting events are always happening in the small animal world of your backyard go there in silence observe carefully and with patience and you'll find an amazing and wonderful land in the grass-blade jungle that was great i think though that they were a little hard on the black widow spider oh yeah um do you have uh can you be an apologist for the black widow spider well i mean anybody in the south has lived around black widows and very few people actually get bit by them they tend to be actually very reclusive and um not they don't jump on people you know generally um i do know someone who's gotten bit and it was because she was hanging out her laundry in a spider i mean just really crazy random things uh a spider head spun a web and then she stuck her hand and basically grabbed the spider um i think that's exactly what you have to do to be bit by a black widow spiders grab one it seems like uh insects are the juice boxes of the animal kingdom there's a lot of juices being sucked out by um ants and by spiders etc well uh especially caterpillars uh caterpillars are um they're long like the one here on the wall they're basically large balloons they don't have a hard exoskeleton and they're uh they're supported by hydrostatic pressure so basically they get filled up with liquids and um and that holds their body shape they're a giant blob with a gut and a mouth and a mouth [Laughter] nice yeah i mean it's a reason why they're small one of the reasons because you know if you're big and heavy like that if you get bigger then you're going to be really big and heavy and hard to move around so thankfully we have internal skeletons yeah yeah good times right yeah so black widow spiders they're not that bad okay well good uh so this next film uh i like that i picked this because it's talking about insect life cycles specifically cicadas and there was the big promise in the united states that this was going to be a crazy time for cicadas but we had like nothing here in the south like in virginia there were a lot but no you didn't have any you didn't have any of the big broods emerge there no no i would say that we even have less than we normally have okay um so i'm not sure exactly what happened but we'll watch this film and we'll talk a little bit more about it well maybe we can figure it out yeah so here's insect life cycle let me switch everything back and put you back in jail so [Music] of all the earth's living things no group is as durable or as diverse as the insects insects have been on earth for millions of years since before the age of dinosaurs their success is due largely to their incredible diversity each different color size and form is a tool one that takes advantage of an opportunity for survival in some species the greatest tool for survival is the life cycle itself in certain years the forests of eastern north america are filled with evidence of one of the insect world's most spectacular life cycles empty insect skins litter the forest floor the air is filled with a shrill eerie song [Music] the periodical cicada is emerging the life cycle of the periodical cicada is the longest known in the insect world life began for these cicadas 17 years ago when their eggs were deposited inside the living branches of the forest a few weeks later tiny cicada nymphs hatched and tumbled to the forest floor in a tiny mud cell beneath the ground the nymph drew nourishment from a tree root it will continue to grow and develop for 12 years until it reaches its full size late in the 16th year the nymph begins to tunnel to the surface now in the summer of the 17th year an unknown signal starts millions of cicada nymphs crawling to the surface this signal invariably comes at night and the nymphs strongest instinct is to continue climbing vertically away from the forest floor finally the nymph stops a split opens at the back and the adult emerges this process called inclusion usually takes about 90 minutes here it's speeded up by the time lapse camera the heart pumps blood through veins in the folded wings at the same time the cicada's soft white body begins to harden by morning the transformation is completed the cicada's body is dark and hard and its wings are fully developed the adult cicada about four centimeters long is easily recognized by its large red eyes and delicate orange double wings it feeds by inserting its beak through thin bark on the branch of a tree and drawing off the sap there are large regional populations or broods where all the cicadas emerge together there are at least 18 broods in north america many of which overlap in most broods the emergence occurs every 17 years though a few broods in the south are on 13-year cycles all the broods do not emerge in the same year the cicadas in brood 10 for example emerged in 1970 and will emerge again in 1987 and in 2004 brood 13 emerged in 1973 and will emerge again in 1990 and 2007 in a healthy brood the number of cicadas is all awesome hundreds of millions of the usual two-week emergence period vast numbers are essential to the survival of the periodical cicada because many will not live to the completion of their life cycle some emerging adults become trapped without the strength to complete their transformation others have shriveled misshapen wings large numbers die from a fungus infection that fills up the normally hollow abdomen even healthy cicadas perish in large for many animals the emergence of cicadas means a new and bountiful supply of food but because the cicadas appear all at once a great majority survive a few days after emergence mating begins under the wing the male cicada has a white ridged membrane stretched tight like a drum head this is the sound organ the males congregate and muleson this chorusing is the cicadas mating call the females eggs are fertilized during mating which may take more than an hour then with the ovipositor or egg-laying tube the female carves out a cavity in a small branch here she deposits her eggs about 15 eggs are laid in two rows side by side the female cicada will make one pocket after another until 600 of her eggs are laid then with the most important part of their life cycle completed the adult cicadas die off only a couple of weeks after they first emerged the longest known lifespan in the insect world comes to a quiet end during one man's lifetime a brood of periodical cicadas will emerge only three or four times henry divers of chicago's field museum of natural history watched brood 13 emerge 17 years ago at that time he made a census of the cicadas in this area now with co-workers from the university of chicago he is back to study the same area with the same statistical techniques the area is divided into thousands of plots each of one square yard then about one hundred are selected random field workers locate plots clear the ground and count the cicada hole which will remain until the following winter this study has shown that as many as a half cicadas have emerged from a single a one success of the periodical cicadas is the fact that they appear above ground all at once this synchronous emir ensures that almost all the cicadas will be able to quickly find a mate birds and other predators will eat only a small part of the cicada population before the rest have reproduced and died a natural death another important adaptation for survival is the cicadas extremely long life cycle the longest part of this 17 years is spent underground hidden from most predators only one third of one percent of the life sent above ground where the cicada is most vulnerable there is no fully accepted explanation of how the cicada developed such a long life cycle but it gives a cicada a big advantage against its above ground predators several months after emergence the forest shows evidence that a new brood will soon hatch where many pockets of eggs were laid the branches are damaged and the leaves at the end of the branches are dead this is a natural pruning process and does the trees no permanent harm but it's another indication of the great size of the cicada population seven or eight weeks after the eggs are fertilized tiny cicada nymphs begin to emerge from the egg pockets they tumble to the ground and seek shelter below the surface not all will survive in a few years they will be large enough to attract the attention of feeding moles fire and plant diseases will also take a toll when dutch elm disease struck a few years ago in the brood 13 area up to two-thirds of the nymphs in some locations starved but again numbers are the cicadas defense if only three or four of each female 600 eggs survive the population will continue undiminished [Music] the periodical cicada will emerge again 19 years [Music] oh [Music] all right um i think my favorite quote from this film was nymph emerges from egg pocket [Laughter] like what is an egg pocket i have no idea what an egg pocket is everybody has favorite egg pockets like like i've had an egg in my pocket before but yeah i don't know a hot pocket but with eggs um so did that answer your question skip about why north carolina doesn't have a big emergence right now i don't know i guess it was i was expecting um it and virginia is getting it and maryland is getting it and i just thought that since we were kind of maybe part of that same belt that we would get it but maybe not maybe we're somebody in the chat we're gonna get it yeah somebody in the chat put a great map in um i don't remember where it was but it was like because in north carolina i don't think you'll get it because it's a different brood um than the ones up in virginia so your north carolina is not going to get it for a couple more years it was basically oversold in the media i was ready for and the thing was i was reading facebook messages where people were like it's intolerable it's so loud and i'm like you're only like two hours for me like what's going on that's weird um um but i was i was also um uh the funny thing i guess not the funny thing but one of the things i was noticing in the chat was that um you know there there are cicadas in the uk uh there's cicadas all over the world but the periodic cicadas the majesticata are only in the united states so there's like 3 000 species of cicada and um um uh only i think it's only like seven of them are actually the periodic cicadas that do the big emergences the rest of them emerge annually and um so they come out every year and they don't have a big emergence but they can be pretty loud uh but uh so so it's the magic cicada is the genus for the big ones all right awesome go ahead timmy just said that uh north carolina gets the 13 year rather than the 17 year cicadas and i think that's true that seems about right i mean i i have remembered times where they said all right we're going to get a bunch of cicadas and it was loud and there were a bunch of carcasses like on doors and porches uh beautiful you know iridescent did you eat them did you try it did you taste any of it that's the cake no no the only ones i found were dead like yeah don't don't eat dead things mom teaches you don't eat it it's dead so if you were if you were to eat a cicada what do you recommend how would you well they're basically land shrimp so um it was really odd i was reading this article that was like if you're allergic to shrimp don't eat cicadas it's very weird to me but okay good advice um so uh you don't want to eat the shells you got to peel them just like shrimp and um they probably taste good in butter i don't like shrimp so well there you go then you're likely not gonna like cicadas right one last film uh and this one was one that i had not put on the list and actually when i was looking for the other films i found this one and i was like oh what is this it's called insects and painting and so it's another pat bowling film made for kids and um so let's go ahead and watch that [Music] [Music] and studies it with curiosity and wonder he feels it moves and examines the different parts with interest a collection of insects can add the study of nature in any classroom for in the world of insects a great variety of forms and patterns exist even the tiniest creatures provide interesting ideas for artwork collections such as this may be found in many science classrooms or you can make your own creatures regardless of size provide strange shapes and unusual forms for us to study a large insect such as this praying mantis made you to its unusual parts [Music] the strongly shaped head the circular eyes and drooping nose all add interest as compared to the large body the massive solid quality of the bear and the graceful movements of the deer are other examples of qualities found in the more [Music] the bumblebee might suggest a compact form as seen in the bear the sweeping wings of the moth may remind us of the gracefulness of a deer or a cat changes in lighting can often enable us to get a different impression nature provides many creep on some may appear strange and unusual others are beautiful and exciting by observing insects and using our imagination we may express ourselves in many different ways and materials insects carved into plaster and painted by a third grader show that the student has captured some of the interesting shapes and patterns insect world [Music] a butterfly with a tree and a house in the background subject for another third grader a twelve-year-old girl carved and painted three insects revealing a variety of colors and textures in her own imaginative way [Music] insects may be found in many places jimmy and david are collecting some for their art and science classes finding them in the grass their leaves and rocks is an enjoyable experience for the boys perhaps you would like to make a collection of your own [Music] [Music] later the boys expressed their ideas of the insects they have observed [Music] their materials include powdered tempera of various colors mixed and thickened with flour and water tongue depressors and various sizes of cardboard [Music] david is painting the details of his insect with a brush he enjoys the feel of the thick paint lands a variety of color combinations [Music] the butterfly indicates his awareness of its shape and bright colors he uses red to emp emphasize pattern [Music] jimmy also finds this process fascinating [Music] by applying paint with the tongue depressor it gives him an opportunity to build up onto the thickened paint you might experiment in many ways [Music] junior high school student work shows many ways of presenting various insects some examples stress brilliant color and pattern while others show more awareness of related shapes and how they may be combined use your own imagination and different materials to capture many of the exciting characteristics found in the insect world [Music] [Music] all right that was a great film yeah yeah i uh um i'm happy i found that that's that's one of the reasons i enjoy having the collection near me as i can like browse and say like oh i don't know what this is you know i otherwise look up films in a database and so i wasn't 100 sure about their paintings but that's okay well you know it's like good job yeah yeah i did notice that a lot of them did get the six leg thing right you know that's good yeah the wings on a butterfly six legs yeah some of the body some of the head thorax abdomen got a little clumped together into one one body segment but that's okay you know and i guess you know so irene you know the reason why i like that film it resonated with me is because you know it's using insects as a way to as a base for art like figuring it out and so that's one of the things that you do and i uh pasted your uh url of the begonia society uh on the web and um you used to do kind of um you'd go to was it entomology conferences and you would do kind of these performance art or presentation slash uh performances i still do it i did one this year it was virtual um so it was over twitch because everything was virtual this year but uh yeah so i'm an entomologist i publish papers on insects i study insects but then i'll do these performances about insects and rock clubs but then i'll also do the performances at entomology conferences or data conferences so it um everyone gets really confused including me what am i supposed to be doing here well one of the things i like is you also make costumes too um you have a variety of costumes um related to the performances you've done and so the one that you did recently what was the theme of that uh that one was uh our pestis pals so i have a grant um looking at arthropod uh vertebrate parasites so like bed bugs and things that bite um uh vertebrates mammals humans and um so i did a performance um about some of our favorite pests uh so um you know things that like fleas uh ticks um so not just insects but other arthropods too um and uh cockroaches because they are some of our favorite pests everyone knows what a cockroach is if you think of favorite as being well known beloved yeah yeah but but insects i like this film the last film because insects do have these really interesting forms you know i mean they're like the reason for some of our greatest um horror movie films like uh inspiration for aliens and um many other sort of cool super monsters and and they're so small that most people wouldn't necessarily notice it until you just stop and look um and then you can see all these really crazy shapes and forms and things yeah yeah um so you've met yes all of those your expertise was um bees and parasitic wasps is that correct yeah yeah and i actually here's one of my uh recent so i'm studying bees out on santa cruz island oh actually uh let me grab this one hold on you guys i'm gonna show you a really cool bee well we have a chance so this is um kind of bee called agapostamin texanus and it's uh a green metallic sweat bee but you can't see if it's green but definitely check them out yeah you can see it's green come on mac focus focus focus uh but this is a b this is a really exciting b it's bright metallic green and they're uh really pretty common it's just that we don't normally think of this as a bee because it's green and it's metallic and oh you see it good excellent uh so that's a really cool bee and um we're studying the differences of between island and mainland populations because they look a little bit different than the two different places so it green is a camouflage which is you know i guess that's not that surprising interesting and so they have hives and they they're like beat like regular bees in every other scent or are they how are they different no they're solitary bees so most of our bees don't live in hives um apis mellifera the honeybee is not native to north america it was brought in for well honey and um uh but most of our bees are totally solitary so they live in burrows by themselves um sometimes here's a nice another nice little bee look at those furry legs oh my gosh you can just see it collecting pockets like he's wearing chaps he's very tapped so um uh sometimes they kind of live in these sort of colonial aggregations but um uh are only um bees in north america native bees in north america that have um colonies are uh bombas bumble bees so so yeah so honeybees none of them produce honey here so they don't i had no idea that um honeybees were invasive species they are an invasive species that kind of reworks a lot of what i was thinking about bees yeah so this is another really cool local bee lots of bees in california i mean by dip bees but different kinds of bees but not to knock honeybees because everyone loves honey right right tasty treat um but they don't belong here so here's another cool bee one i got one more to show one more so this one another nice this one has a nice stripy butt thorax green body also would be e so this uh one of the things in watching the old films is that we run across alternative pronunciations so instead of uh protein it's protein proteus instead of gemini it's gemini so how did so abdomen versus abdomen which what is the uh the current pronunciation of that i say abdomen but um the thing i always tell my students is don't worry about how you say it just say it like especially with scientific names and stuff just just say it so um uh i would totally understand abdomen or abdomen or i don't remember there was one i was listening to a i think a david attenborough film and um he was talking about a kind of duck um and he was like talking about it being a mallard and i was like get it i know what that is i'm somebody mentioned um killer bees so the uh that was the big thing in the 70s is the africanized bees yeah the north and livestock and people um what happened uh it just ended up being not as big of a deal as what people thought so you know some of the um uh they're a kind of um honeybee so they're um uh but they're just more aggressive um uh which honeybees are pretty passive so they could use a little aggression and um so if you know if you come across one of these africanized bee hives they will sting you and sometimes sting a lot but it just ended up not being as big of a deal as what the media and the movies made them out to be right so like one of the more recent ones is the killer hornets murder hornets it's like come on people really murder hornet i mean yeah they can sting uh and if you're allergic to uh stings then it could be really bad and even if you're not it's really gonna hurt right um i don't really see there's gonna be a rash of people being killed by murder organs anytime soon we're bored the insect world we want to ramp it up it's well the most brood ever the worst whatever yeah i don't know i think people i think people like insects a whole lot um but they also like to be scared and creeped out by insects so um you know i think that's a sort of a familiarity too and um in things that can sting and bite and then get away really fast and they look really alien uh can can be kind of creepy so yeah well irene thank you for your time today and showing us some of your um uh some of the bees in your collection and talking about some insect films with us and answering some questions it's very much oh yeah thanks for inviting me i had fun yeah maybe we'll do this again and um in the in the fall or the winter okay because i got a lot of films on insects and we haven't even scratched this so that's so great i mean i think my guess is the reason why there's so many films about insects when there's a lot of insects like millions of species right but also because you don't really get to see them unless you see them on film because it can be so small if you don't zoom in you don't i don't know you don't get to see him maybe we can do a show where it's irene moon versus erwin moon because i do have some moody institute of science films about insects and and you know those films are not they're science films but they're really they might get me going right they're excused to talk about the bible so that's what they really are so maybe we'll put together uh moon versus moon moon moon versus moon the dueling
