in the heart of the russian countryside some things are as unchanging as the landscape [Music] other things have changed greatly most of the grandparents and maybe even the parents of these soviet farm workers could not read or write before the revolution in 1917 as many as 70 percent of the people were illiterate in rural areas the figure was up to around 90 percent now illiteracy is a thing of the past and all soviet children are guaranteed free primary and secondary schooling [Music] on a collective farm deep in cossack territory in the cuban region children turn up for the first day of the new soviet school year the 1st of september meanwhile across the country on another collective farm in biella russia on the western borders of the soviet union nine-year-old natasha finishes her household chores before going off to begin third grade while to the south in the black sea holiday resort of sochi thirteen-year-old villager gets ready to commence his seventh year of education his scarf indicates that he's a member of the young pioneers an organization something like our scouts or guides to which almost all soviet children between 10 and 14 belong and which plays an important part in their social and political training [Music] september the first is one of the big days in the soviet calendar press radio and television give it special coverage emphasizing the importance of education describing the joys and pleasures of the school experience and congratulating the young on their entry into a wonderful new phase of their lives with six of his compulsory 10 years schooling already behind him the opening ceremony is a familiar event to villager every pupil new or old comes along armed with a traditional gift of flowers for the teachers [Music] for those commencing school for the first time there's little of the fear and even terror sometimes experienced by their counterparts in other countries soviet schools group all grades together under the one roof and administration from seven-year-old beginners to those sitting for matriculation at the age of 16 or 17. [Music] the ceremony over the pupils march away to their classrooms three-month summer vacation has come to an end and the rigorous routine of a new school year begins to continue through the colder months six days a week interrupted only by short breaks at the new year and in early spring at the age of 13 vallandia is virtually in the third year of what corresponds to secondary education in the west most soviet children undergo a compulsory ten years course as a seventh former villager has some 32 hours of lessons a week children in the first four years however do only 24 hours a week soviet education has a reputation for being weighted heavily in favor of science and mathematics velodja takes 14 different subjects including six hours a week of physics chemistry and biology compared with the more relaxed classroom atmosphere in most western countries soviet teaching is extremely formal and old fashioned the same curriculum with only minor variations is taught throughout the whole country the average lesson is more like a lecture with the students playing a passive role answering questions and memorizing the knowledge presented to them discipline presents little problem young people are taught to respect and obey their teachers to be polite and to revere knowledge these values are not so much enforced by threats or punishment by the teacher corporal punishment is strictly forbidden instead the emphasis is on moral pressure often reinforced by the teachers appealing to the rest of the class to join in criticism of the offender problem cases are frequently discussed by the school's young pioneer council made up of representatives from each class who decide on appropriate punishment for the wrongdoer of all values instilled into soviet children one of the strongest is patriotism among the rules which all young pioneers swear to obey is one which states that they will honor the memory of those who've given their lives in the struggle for freedom and the well-being of the soviet motherland it's estimated that up to 30 million people died when the germans invaded the soviet union during the second world war which the russians steadfastly call the great patriotic war their memory is never allowed to fade least of all in the minds of these young people changing the guard at a monument to the fallen at odessa on the black sea to these four-year-olds arriving at a day nursery on a prosperous collective farm the war is still an unknown phenomenon it's at pre-school institutions like these in city or country but many soviet children get their first taste of education in the broad sense the soviet union maintains a wide network of nurseries and kindergartens some provided by factories offices and farms and others run by the ministry of public health their main function is to look after the children while their mothers are at work for over 80 percent of married women work preschool institutions cater for over 10 million children throughout the soviet union but there still aren't enough to satisfy the demand nurseries are for very young children between six months and about three years old at that age of course they don't bother much with formal instruction but rather with the physical well-being of the youngsters by providing them with healthy surroundings and medical care doctors nurses and trained kitchen personnel are usually on the staff [Music] kindergartens are for children between four and six that is until they're old enough to go to school it's at kindergarten that teaching as such begins though naturally this is adapted to the tender age of the children apart from word games simple numbers and normal play activity the main aim is to give the youngsters some elementary training in social responsibility and the idea of collective living on which the soviet system is based from the earliest possible age the children are broken up into groups in which most of the things they do involve sharing and cooperation emphasis is placed on the notion of common ownership under the motto what's mine is ours what's ours is mine most kindergartens are well equipped to cater for the needs of their charges whether for learning or relaxation mostly as a result of financial assistance from the state or the factories or farms to which they may be attached unlike the schools themselves neither nurseries nor kindergartens are free but fees are extremely cheap often fees are subsidized by trade unions or factories and some wealthy enterprises may cover all costs most pre-school institutions are open from 8 am to 6 pm and some provide sleeping accommodation for children whose parents may be working night shifts during the day a great deal of time is given over to physical exercise and games a feature common to the whole soviet educational system the youngsters are provided with three meals a day the food is healthy and nutritious though it reflects the peculiarities of the russian diet adapted over centuries to the cold climate thick vegetable soups and processed milk foods even at meal times the emphasis on collective responsibility continues the children sit at tables in the same groups in which they undergo their elementary learning even at this age one of their number is appointed table supervisor with the job of seeing that the group behave themselves while eating and clean up afterwards this is all part of the process of developing a spirit of self-reliance based however not on the individuals by themselves but in cooperation with others [Music] cultural education also begins early under an ever-present picture of lennon founder of the soviet state a group of tiny biello russian kids in traditional national costume rehearse an old song for a forthcoming public performance before proud parents and friends [Applause] [Music] great store is set in the soviet union on culture generally but the traditional art of the various nationalities and regions gets special emphasis [Music] like so many other aspects of soviet life it becomes a permanent part of a young person's upbringing both inside and outside school [Music] these teenagers are part of a folk dance group organized by the palace of culture on their collective thumb nor is dancing the special monopoly of the girls in time these dance students may graduate to one of the many professional folk song and dance companies like the cuban cossack choir a highly honoured folk ensemble which has performed with great success abroad many of their songs and dances are drawn from the life of the kuban region where they're playing tonight before an audience of appreciative collective farmers [Music] oh young people with outstanding talent are selected at an early age to attend special schools for the artistically gifted in music ballet or the graphic arts apart from other schools for those with special ability in science and mathematics however there's no grading of students in soviet schools [Music] for the moment however natasha has more serious problems on her mind as she tackles her homework before setting off to school her teacher will start off each lesson by examining the class on the work they've been set overnight a task which may take up twenty percent of the time marks will be awarded to the pupils for their performance from five for excellent to one at the bottom of the scale as a nine-year-old third grader natasha should normally do only one hour's homework each day but she says she often spends two or three hours at her desk before being able to go out and play there's still a shortage of teachers and school buildings in the soviet union particularly in country areas with the result that many schools operate two shifts one in the morning and the other in the afternoon as one shift ends the other goes in natasha is in the afternoon shift this means she spends fewer hours at school than do children where only single shifts apply but she has to do more homework to make up for it she says she'd rather go to school in the morning so that she could spend the afternoon playing but the morning shifts reserved for children from outlying areas who have to be brought in by bus each day though some country schools still provide only eight years of education natasha's follows the full 10-year course and the same curriculum as elsewhere in the soviet union with one important variation her lessons are conducted in her native language biello russian this is related to russian and uses the same script but with significant differences in spelling vocabulary and grammar russian is taught as a compulsory second language natasha's other subjects comprise maths nature study music art and physical education she won't start to study history or literature until fourth grade or any science or geography until the beginning of secondary school in fifth grade at that stage too she'll start to learn a foreign language london is the capital of the united kingdom it's political economic and commercial center one foreign language is compulsory for all soviet school children from the fifth grade onwards english is the most popular followed by french german and spanish wherever possible they are taught by the direct method that is the teacher tries to avoid using russian and conducts the lesson entirely in the language concerned naturally success depends greatly on the teacher's own command of that language of two boys who visited mountain yes and who saw the most interesting places in the capital of great britain so children at the very end of this book you have a vocabulary i want you to open your book here generally the standard is remarkably high one of the reasons is the size of the classes whereas the average class for ordinary subjects may number 30 students or more for language study they're broken up into groups of no more than 12 or 15 often taught in special language laboratories with modern equipment and facilities is even more lucky than most other soviet students tackling a foreign language his school at sochi is no ordinary establishment it specializes in english not merely as part of the normal curriculum but teaching whole subjects in it two children this pen has a point yes it is sharp it is sharp yes all right and so i can't write with this pencil because its point is broken uh i want you to try and say the sentence you please though villager may be lucky to have the opportunity to master another language it also means a heavier workload selection standards for such schools are strict and those who can't keep up the pace are moved back into normal russian language courses four point six four point six uh three irregularities they said meaning is a full stop or a full point for example i have written a sentence and have put a full point at its end clear yes right the next meaning is a position from which some something is viewed the main idea of something even high qualifications like language proficiency don't necessarily guarantee high incomes if anything soviet education deliberately tries to prevent academic snobbery in addition to their formal subjects all soviet children do a compulsory two hours a week of so-called labor training in many cases on quite complicated machinery supplied by nearby factories which adopt their school officially it's supposed to instill respect for labour develop skills in handling tools and give an understanding of production processes there is also a network of professional technical trade schools which prepare less academically inclined youngsters to take their place in the workforce in a country which is still suffering a severe shortage of skilled factory labour the encouragement of a high regard for manual work makes it easier to solve urgent practical tasks these collective farm children have been let out of school to help with the maize harvest by husking the corn cobs each class has been assigned a production target and competes against the rest for championship honours with the added incentive of a week's trip to moscow and leningrad for the winning group similarly on another farm in western russia university students have been released from their studies to help get in the potato crop before the winter frosts by picking up potatoes missed by the mechanical harvesters they earn a small wage for the job to add to their monthly living allowances and even claim they enjoyed the break away from their books if developing a healthy attitude to work plays an important part in soviet schooling so equally does physical education with the same two-hour share of the weekly timetable again the emphasis is twofold on character building team spirit and collective activity and on plane physical fitness [Music] a massive nationwide effort has lifted the soviet union to the top of the international table in many sports particularly gymnastics and athletics facilities in the schools vary but most have their own gymnasiums and adequate access to sporting fields outside school the sporting scene for the average soviet youngster is much the same as anywhere else with the obvious differences not much sign of tennis or rugby and certainly no such thing as golf or cricket but plenty of activity in games suited to the brief russian summer and the harsh winter that follows it's often said that children are the privileged plus in the soviet union that's something of an exaggeration of course but the thoroughness of their education system despite all those features which may seem strange and even over-regimented to us enables them to face the future with a growing confidence [Music] [Music] out on her collective farm in biella russia natasha dreams of going to university to become a teacher or a doctor [Music] velodja going to visit his grandparents in the green belt of cozy old cottages around sochi on the black sea coast thinks he might put his english to use as an interpreter or maybe he says he might go on to military academy and become a jet pilot who can say at this stage what they might become so [Music] hello welcome hey i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show live from the av geeks archive we just watched schools in soviet style it's made in 1979 by journal films and filmmakers from journal actually came from coronet um they kind of started their own side business or side company and they made a lot of films in the 70s and 80s um but uh yeah that's kind of fascinating i i'm interested in the looking at soviet culture films from the 70s because that's during the time when all i saw were these kind of grotesque stereotypes of what the soviet union was like and to see people on amusement park rides is really fascinating to see kids in school it's really fascinating so and for a while it was like last year i was spending way too much money on soviet educational films somebody from the ukraine was posting them on on ebay and i was getting them for a good deal but the shipping was outrageous and i got some good films or i think they were good films i don't know um but anyways i collect old 16 millimeter films in case you didn't know and uh thanks so much have a ham for donating some uh coffee to the cause if you donate more than 25 you'll get a t-shirt and all you have to do is uh when you donate just say what size t-shirt and the size that you need the size and then the address that i'm shipping it to they're going to get printed next week and today is kind of the cut off time if you have uh need a bigger size i'm going to be ordering kind of small medium large extra larges and double xl's but people have been putting requests for larger sizes and please put those in now because i'm going to order a bunch in that kind of small to extra large range or double xl range but it's a special order for me to get the larger sizes so please order today otherwise i can't guarantee i'm gonna have a size for you uh but anyways the response has been really great and thank you so much give you a quick look of what the shirt looks like um it's on a charcoal shirt and it is uh illustrated by jason polin a beloved illustrator um friend of av geeks who passed away last year much too young uh this next film is a sponsored film and um i showed a trout to dream about uh last week or week before last and it was a very odd um fishing expedition film that was really just an ad for um alcoa aluminum foil um so this one is see if you can figure out what this is an ad for uh it is a a hunting film hunting expedition film and it's sponsored by two companies so here we go uh this is elk country [Music] so so this is elk country it's big and high we came to find out we did too it wasn't always easy but it was worth it [Music] came along to sketch what happened and here's how it went [Music] the american elk monarch of the glen lord of the wilderness king of the red deer tribe once elk roamed over most of the united states and southern canada now they live only in the high mountain country of the west places like the laramie and medicine bow range the bitterroot sawtooth and salmon river mountains [Music] and here too in the mountain meadows and timber above the snake river valley now someone asked me where to find elk i'd say go up young man go up this height it takes a mountain of and just to survive and the elk are higher still where indian summer can turn to instant winter when a storm moves in but we came prepared for anything our kitchen and sleeping tents were pitched in a wooded draw by a stream our camp was miles from where we hunted the sound of our voices and cutting wood had spooked any elk that may have been around in a few hours our pack train had unfolded into a comfortable camp all the conveniences of home plus a few new wrinkles that would have made the old-timers gawk i thought he might have had to stop sketching when the sun went down but with his battery pack and fluorescent light daytime comes anytime what a convenience in a mountain camp portable power for the hundred little things that need doing after dark [Music] our snug mountain retreat came complete with wood burning stove up here appetites come early and last all day old habits died hard too like shaving and washing became a test of courage others just laughed and scratched [Music] that snow melt water is about 35 degrees makes cheeks look like strawberry jam [Music] after scouting the draws and meadows where the elk were we got down the business this 338 magnum rifle should get the job done with a 250 grain bullet it's effective up to 300 yards or more depending on where the hunter puts them now we're in for more climbing [Music] the horses ease the load and they'll carry the elk back if we're lucky takes a sharp eye and a hunter's instinct to find out and a lot of waiting [Music] suddenly it looked like our patients had paid off elk moving down in the draw no just western deer we'd have taken them this stock might have run off a real quarry elk once more science came to our aid the real thing elk spotted for sure they were moving out fast faster than we could get into position for a shot we had missed our chance the trip down was disappointing and a little bit dangerous loose shale and rock underfoot spells trouble for men and animals slip can end in a long slide with plenty of bruises and even a broken bone is a bad part of the bargain and to top it all no elk today it's a good thing we brought extra pancake mix along but for hungry hunters flapjacks are a poor substitute for elk steaks anyway we knew elk were around this helped raise spirits a hunter from another camp had scored in a nice five pointer what a beauty he said it had come by his stand going like 60 and he took him on a 90 yard running shot could have been the one we saw well maybe tomorrow looked like a good time to play rip van winkle but my rambunctious friends had other ideas for me [Music] there was no way out my hammock had become a cocoon later we found that our icy stream of melted snow had its good points even though the trout weren't taking any flies [Music] no wonder the fish weren't biting a whale had scared them off sometimes hunting elk is just plain hard work there's wood to be cut grub cook and the traditional woman's work washing dishes but the fun followed nothing can top a warm fire good friends and talk of the day's hunt nothing is more pleasant than gathering around a fire and maybe even spinning a few yards [Music] memories like this last through the long western winters [Music] all this talk of hunting out made me wonder how it had been when the indians hunted here and what a hunt it must have been a bull elk can stand as high as a horse and weigh a thousand pounds with great skill and patience for the indian to make a kill carefully tracking stopping behind every rise and inching forward to within bow range might be on the trail for a day or more and no guarantee of success as we found [Music] out next morning we were out early determined to get our elk [Music] some of the hunters had gone ahead to drive the elk back toward us we had hunters on the top and both sides of a ridge waiting elk and coming this way and when they're running helps blend with the brush but here he comes over down then back up the big bull stopped for just a second it was enough 20 30 40 yards in dowling win we hurried across the draw to claim our prize 600 pounds of elk a fine specimen the cape is carefully cut away so the head and rack can be mounted as a truck [Music] tonight there'll be a hunter's feast with thick stakes all around the end of a hunt is a little sad when you know you have to leave all this but the mountains will be here next year when it's time to hunt elk again oops got all caught up and stuff um and i didn't get a film ready i was looking through a stack of films thinking like which one i wanted to use and i couldn't decide and that makes me angry so here's a film the angry film and i want to say thank you to colin and to jonathan for uh buying us some coffee enough coffee that we feel like we want to give you a t-shirt so thanks so much for that here's the angry movie [Music] i'm so mad i'm so mad just leave me absolutely alone angry angry angry [Music] that's what i am it feels like this inside oh i'm so mad i'll show them all of them i'm gonna be [Music] angry mom is dumb daddy's dumb too he's stupid and he's never home he's always working and grandpa's gum pretty dumb and the candy man karen's a brat i hate her susan till i hate them karen most of all [Music] oh i wish i wish they were all dead [Music] oh not you kitty you're the only good person in the whole world i only hate them the sun's out you're just like grown-ups you're so busy all the time busy busy busy i hate you not now we don't have time they never have time ups are stupid i'm never gonna grow up and i hate wearing susan's old shoes they're yucky i don't wanna go into my sister's old clothes i'm gonna say something bad dirty words um uh mud face stink pot cooked vegetables dumb head oh they don't help besides i hate dirty words poor kitty you're never gonna see karen again because i'm never gonna play with her again never ever hey kitty look this is stupid old karen oh i don't want to be me anymore nobody likes me anymore i want to be somebody else i won't touch you kitty don't be scared of me oh it's raining again i won't be anyone i won't be anyone at all ever darling telephone i'm not darling angel are you unhappy about something i'm not angel and i'm not unhappy i'm mad and i'm angry open the door and let me give you a big hug no it's too late it's too late it's karen she wants to talk to you karen hello karen what are you doing nothing what are you doing nothing want to come over to my house we could play something you want to come okay i'll be right over [Music] that should be the rage movie that little girl is so mad and it's great just to identify it's kind of liberating to identify with the uh the absolute rage that that little girl is experiencing and just saying like yeah i get it i totally am there with you she draws on her face um this next film i've not seen this before like many of the films i've been showing since i'm at the archive actually have the ability to show stuff live um and so i've been pulling from some batches that i've i got since uh pandemic that i haven't been able to really watch uh and digitize because i don't come in um because my assistant's working but he's on vacation so when the ma the cat's away the mice will play this is called load runners enjoy two three five [Music] for nearly 100 years the osborne manufacturing corporation has been recognized the world over as the leading producer of foundry production machinery the acceptance the success of this reputation has been due in part to several advanced design principles and features osborne's load runners idler rollers is one of these designed to efficiently handle static radial and thrust loads and originally used exclusively on osborne's own machinery equipment demanded idler rollers that provide long trouble-free service without constant maintenance attention whatever the conditions speeds loads contaminants heat cold a never-ending series of problems [Music] in 1970 a technical news release announced that osborne load runners idler rollers were being made available to all industries this film is a report an update on the progress made the innovations the applications the improved manufacturing technology employed to meet industrial problems and demands particularly appealing to design engineers and plant maintenance personnel is the availability of osborne load runners idler rollers in four different tread configurations plain flanged v-grooved and you grew all have important money-saving applications across a majority of industrial plants [Music] flanged rollers are easily applied when built-in side guiding is needed reciprocating conveyors for moving materials employ plane rollers as top guides [Music] flanged rollers eliminate the need for separate guide strips radial loading determines roller spacing [Music] motions and any thrust loads are effectively handled in automotive transfer line equipment v-grooved rollers are generally applied to lighter loads or when contaminants exclude flat riding rails [Music] u-grooved rollers have proved effective as cable guides and also in wire straightening applications load runners are used as feed guides on slitting lines design ingenuity incorporates load runners as probe sensors on this rail wheel turning machine [Music] roller contact prevents side loading on shock absorber rods when cushioning in an air powered rollover device [Music] external loads being carried by plane rollers may need directional guiding additional plane rollers are ideal this multi-level spiral conveyor employs some 50 rollers a steel mill problem solved bearings and treads withstand thrust speed contamination as wheels on billet transfer cars reliably and economically specialty machinery handles insulation wrapping on the alaskan pipeline using eccentric load runners for rolling and guiding hoists on offshore oil drilling stations in the gulf of mexico incorporate five-inch flange rollers [Music] the key the secret to dimensional accuracy uniformity consistency and interchangeability does not just happen it is intentional and controlled it begins when the raw material and numerically controlled machinery meet for the first time the steel in this case 52 100 electric furnace bearing quality a wide selection of tread diameters ranging from one and a half to eight inches meet most industrial requirements smooth running and wear resistant properties are established by later case hardening treads to 5560 rockwell c while still retaining a tough inner core the manufacturing techniques employed by osborne testify to a commitment to machine designers engineers and maintenance superintendents that dimensional accuracy uniformity and interchangeability are essential other numerically controlled automatics contribute the sturdy studs diameters from 5 8 to 2 and a half inches all too high tensile and shear strength specs everything is controlled for consistency threading hex socket broaching surface finish raw materials in process pre-assembly and final inspections are planned and followed through from beginning to end it all means money saving and problem solving results for industrial users in a gigantic power transmission market anti-friction bearings carefully analyzed and selected to handle thrust and radial loads that exclude contaminants they start with deep grooved ball bearings with continuous shoulders and combination metal guard and lip seal protection larger sizes incorporate tapered roller bearings for additional load carrying capacity double lift seals retain lubrication and protect races from foreign matter [Music] this is where it all comes together treads studs and bearings precisely assembled using locating fixtures bearing manufacturers report up to 90 percent of bearing problems are related to poor lubrication practice bearing sets are lubricated with the proper grade and type of grease a controlled fill assures that the bearing will meet its b10 life rating [Music] a tightly fitted expansion plug for additional protection against ever-present contaminants completes the assembly [Music] [Music] design engineers plant engineers maintenance superintendents power transmission and bearing distributors need idler rollers to endure and excel in a never-ending set of adverse operating conditions high speeds heavy thrust radial and axial loads or combinations of all three in dirt dust moisture heat and cold conditions that do exist and demand maintenance time for cleaning and lubricating they plague industry everywhere the total understanding of these factors reinforces osborne's dedication to the innovative engineering and manufacturing that has already built a better roller [Music] so so that was uh load runners i know some of you went immediately to the broader bund software game load runner spelled l-o-d-e um man i love films like this niche assembly line ish stuff uh and some people noticed that um i'm gonna switch back here so you can see it uh i actually did color correction while we were watching it so this is what it was before and so i adjusted the the led in the camera settings so that i was basically uh i looked at a vector scope and it was seeing where the color was mapped and i was able to kind of adjust it and get it to be in the right range uh so that's what we do that is what we do um this next film is uh i've been wanting to show this for a while this was made by uh highway safety films uh which was a company that was based in mansfield ohio it was started by a guy who basically was showing up at traffic accidents and taking photos of the accident and then made a slideshow about the the the dangers of driving and basically trying to convince drivers to um heed the rules of the road and showing the results what would happen if that didn't if you didn't um that person then shot motion pictures and built a little mini industry of showing really gory driver's ed films including signal 30 wheels of tragedy uh mechanized death um not red asphalt that was uh california um but then they they kind of branched out and they did other types of films and this is one it's called shoplifter and it's for people who work in law enforcement and security and that work at stores and it looks just like a film on how to shoplift it's really phenomenal um really really amazing so here's the shoplifter they belong to the business executive the brother the college student the teenager the factory worker but many merchants don't guard against these hands even though they annually steal two billion dollars more than all the nation's burglars and stick up men combined they are the hands of the shoplifter [Music] so excuse me your business is selling merchandise right [Music] yes it is that's right yes and merchandising is the way to do it appealing displays easy to serve oneself and make them want it unfortunately many customers take this serve yourself too literally [Music] and about one of every 60 customers entering your store will want it so badly they will attempt to steal it the shoplifter knows the hand is quicker than the eye the eye of an unobservant salesperson it's the hands that do the stealing the amateur shoplifter may steal because she can't resist an opportunity to get something for nothing because of need for the thrill of it for luxuries for psychological reasons shoplifters come from all economic levels [Music] the most active days are friday and saturday opening and closing hours and lunch hour are choice times because that's when alertness by sales personnel is usually the lowest but who steals why and when they steal makes little difference to the salesperson who does the most efficient job possible alertness and courtesy by you are the greatest deterrents to shoplifters and it goes without saying that protecting your stores profits enhances your opportunity for salary increases and it directly affects you as a customer in other stores since shoplifting losses are added to the price of merchandise here you see actual footage of a professional shoplifter at work she is about to commit a theft no one in the supermarket knows what is taking place she stacks these stakes neatly too neatly to an unobservant salesperson she may appear to be an average housewife but an alert salesperson will notice the large coat full skirt and big purse these make for quick and easy concealment of merchandise notice how easily she slips the stakes under her dress holding them between her legs this is one of the many methods of boosting the professional term for shoplifting and it's the most common technique employed by the female pro given enough privacy she can make off with portable television sets typewriters radios tape recorders and small appliances just as easily she can steal items weighing as much as 25 pounds she buys one or two inexpensive items to cover her presence in the store it is folly for retail merchants to attempt to cut selling and operating costs by reducing the number of sales personnel an adequate sales force ensures good customer service and is far less expensive than losses to shoplifters what this shoplifter can steal in seconds will more than pay the daily wage of a good salesperson by stealing cartons of cigarettes this professional can easily earn 100 a day she earns as much or more when working drug stores clothing stores hardware or discount stores this woman represents a growing number of shoplifters who are taking advantage of the self-service store the removal of barriers between goods and customers and the improved display techniques which are psychologically designed to increase buying [Music] although the professional makes up only about 10 percent of those stealing from you the dollar value of what they steal far exceeds that of the amateur shoplifter pros usually steal expensive items later selling them for about half the retail price the security chief of one large department store believes one professional shoplifter is more costly than 100 amateurs while some store managers claim the small but frequent theft of the amateur is their greatest loss smaller stores can't afford security personnel and boosters know it they are also quick to recognize sales personnel working on commission because a stall will usually send them scurrying to a hotter sales prospect and that's what the shoplifter wants privacy but regardless of who is the greatest threat to store profits the amateur or the professional most shoplifters can be deterred by observant sales personnel who acknowledge all customers letting no one go unrecognized personnel who treat everyone as a customer this professional will be the first to admit that the presence of an observant alert salesperson would have sent her away empty-handed this is the merchandise she carried out of the store however she neglected to pay for these items the average housewife does about 90 percent of her family shopping and more than 85 percent of the nation's shoplifting she is a typical amateur shoplifter she may feel your store owes her something that such a small item won't be missed [Music] her purchase came to 13.50 most supermarkets operate on a very low profit margin the theft of a 99-cent item represents a substantial loss based on what this housewife purchased and she'll probably be back tomorrow or the next day don't allow empty cartons to accumulate in the front of your store many a request for what you think is an empty box has been prompted by the knowledge that it has been filled with your merchandise by an accomplice [Music] men also pull this trick stuffing meat cigarettes or other items down their trousers and covering it with their shirt [Music] placing tags inside the wrapping can eliminate much of this [Music] switching containers putting expensive items into cartons formally containing inexpensive items is a popular trick an alert cashier will notice all tears and broken seals it's easy to slip items under her knitting beware of customers bringing bags boxes or any large container into your store [Music] no these slacks weren't exactly what she wanted the green ones are use the check system make sure everything is returned this woman gambles that a bag from another store will not be searched [Music] it's better for the purse to be too large than too small wearing a rain cape on a sunny day should arouse your interest some shoplifters don't always hide their thefts they merely exchange their old for your new here's a happy customer happy that the clerk wasn't alert didn't check inside the cooler unpackaged clothing should always be checked one clerk didn't take the time [Music] switching pinned on tags and tied tags gets this shopper a twenty five dollar coat for thirteen dollars knowing your merchandise will curb this theft technique [Music] with the aid of this clever booster box only two seconds are needed to steal an expensive camera here is another type of booster box it's carried by the shoplifter for the convenience of his companion not all packages are what they seem to be the cleverly arranged ribbons conceal the opening in this box many service areas provide supervised checking facilities for their customers convenience and for their own protection professionals often work in pairs no one could be more casual than this customer that despite all the activity going on behind her she is the shield often a hidden zipper allows a lifter to do her own stuffing while the partner acts as a lookout here is a shoplifter making her selection while her companion serves as lookout the chosen dress is placed under her arm temporarily [Music] she doesn't plan to carry it out she'll wear it [Music] sorry these won't do that's right she's wearing the stolen dress under her own clothing left in fitting rooms is easy pickings for shoplifters who just wear them over or under their own clothes check fitting rooms frequently for merchandise left inside this man appears interested in a suit his companion is even more interested female boosters can take three or four suits including hangers in one motion holding them between their legs with comparative ease sometimes a partner will enter the store first select the suits to be stolen and put them on the end of the rack for easy identification by the confederate who will do the stealing [Music] if a professional shoplifter can get an item between her legs without you seeing that item she can steal it this method can be used in any store to steal almost any item articles displayed on the counter's edge are easily stolen an observant sales clerk would notice the clothing difference between mother and child raincoat and sun suit [Music] this man had a profitable day [Music] it's good merchandising to display as few articles on the counter as possible a booster would hesitate to take a loan item since it would immediately be missed and draw attention to his presence on a rainy day this shoplifter simply palms the tag and walks out of the store [Music] stealing larger items requires more self-possession it is estimated that one of every 60 customers to enter your store tomorrow will try to steal something the key to defeating this rising tide of shoplifting lies with you the observant store employee even the cleverest shoplifter cannot steal from you if you realize that quick courteous service to customers is your primary function police and retail security reports reveal that the most effective solution to shoplifting is the prevention of the theft to steal from you and your store the shoplifter must have two favorable conditions merchandise to steal and privacy to steal it since you are in the business to sell merchandise you must display your wares the stress therefore must be on the reduction of the shoplifters sense of privacy you can do this by doing the best job of selling you can [Music] quickly acknowledge and serve all customers even if you feel they are not ready to buy [Music] convex mirrors peepholes and observation points also eliminate the shoplifters sense of privacy but a hundred observation points closed circuit television cameras and other electronic devices cannot compensate for good sales people who are aware of everything going on around them these devices contribute to the shoplifters feeling that they are being watched but when a shoplifter spots an alert salesperson they know they're being watched service to customers is everything in your job it not only increases sales but decreases shoplifting if you treat everyone as a customer you will have performed your duty as an efficient courteous salesperson and if they are a shoplifter you have prevented a theft an adequate number of salespeople during busy hours ensures prompt service and prevents mass shoplifting a uniform guard patrolling your aisles is also a strong deterrent to stealing other shoplifting preventatives include elevated sales stations for complete surveillance and therefore maximum control over your merchandise adequate lighting and low displays permit greater visibility [Music] shoplifters develop patterns for stealing for example a shoplifter never keeps his eyes on the merchandise he watches you and the customers around him waiting for that moment of privacy when he can steal [Music] beware of loose coats they can conceal countless types of items alertness on your part is the strongest preventative to shoplifting [Music] awareness of all customers [Music] knowledge of your merchandise serve all of your customers as quickly as possible even if you are busy with one customer immediately acknowledge new customers i'll be with you in a moment sir to a customer those words mean courtesy to a shoplifter it means i'm watching you never leave your section unattended and for customers who are just looking keep them and the merchandise in sight may i help you with that tower asking this question is courteous it also deters a shoplifter valuable items should be displayed out of reach of merchandise left in stairwells freight elevators halls and in the shopping area are easy prey for shoplifters after restocking departments all merchandise should be returned immediately to the stockroom this is a popular trick for stealing popular records you can lose hundreds of records and other items to the magazine fan or you can save hundreds of records by putting them out of reach behind glass as this security conscious department store did [Music] not all book carrying customers are avid readers [Music] a shoplifter has struck don't allow empty hangers on racks [Music] you're here to sell things not to get personal someone ought to teach you your manners i'm going to report you to the manager any distraction that draws off the sales clerk may offer an opportunity for a new shoplifter to be created if you see someone take something the best policy is usually to make no attempt to apprehend the suspect or accuse them of shoplifting get a physical description their outstanding characteristics their dress if possible keep the suspect in view while notifying your superior your obligation may end with getting an accurate physical description and alerting your designated authority depending upon your store's policy you the salesperson by being alert observant curious and devote yourself to doing the best sales job you can so as i've mentioned earlier in the week uh the fact that i'm at the archive means that i have multiple workstations working on different things so i'm digitizing some old umatic tapes three quarter inch tapes which are having a horrible horrible um sticky shed where basically the oxide is just coming off the off the tape and clog in the head so i have to like repeatedly clean um and uh i need to mute that over there but i'm just gonna keep talking so here we go um let's see uh i've got a bunch of uh commercials i'd love to show you it's gonna run longer than two o'clock but um let's go for it peanuts one it is definitely uh early in uh peanuts uh supposedly there was a michigan um company that did a peanuts ad very early on but uh i want to do some research and see where that falls but uh thanks so much guys for tuning in uh it was completely by coincidence that i showed a bunch of films that were all based in uh northern ohio um at least with the shoplifter the other films the movie makers uh films those were from cleveland i know that but the shoplifter one in mansfield was that was a coincidence i had had that one lined up to show for a while and finally i was like well you know what i should show this maybe subconsciously thinking like ohio um i was not a cedar point person i was a kings island person because i grew up near dayton and so we would go to cincinnati and of its potty time that i would show to friends all the time it was actually made in north carolina by duke i think was filmed in charlotte anyways i just want to say this to jason um that i am a super duper pooper i can potty with the best no more diapers to stand in my way they are very impressed um that's a cryptic message i'm sure but if you look up super duper pooper on youtube you will see an extremely catchy song of which i know kind of know the words too i had to kind of write down them so i would get it right but it's it's in there um along with tara boom d.a i stand here this way and while i'm standing here standing there i pull down my underwear um anyways thanks again for your tuning in on that weird cryptic message uh and i will see you again tomorrow tomorrow is going to be i
