tennis is a form of war a violent thing and in the middle of it all the absolute center of attention is this the tennis ball it lives in a hundred mile an hour world contact is extreme either brutal or feather light and repeat it endlessly speed power strategy and fun the little sphere brings them all together two ounces of toughness felt covered two and a half inches through resilient durable it makes tennis happen for beginner and pro young and old impelled by an assortment of clubs the tennis ball survives thrives even in a vicious climate of smashes lobs chops slices and gloves and always it prevails the tennis ball is the embodiment of perfection each one because where it lives there's no room for the undependable for variation for difference the bad bounce uneven where dependability has to be total every time over and over and over so how does it all get that way how does such utter reliability come to be when so many are produced how can each one be so perfect the answer comes from machines and people and a name a big one [Music] it all starts at a plant like this one in phoenix whistle clean crisp of design new efficient the phoenix facility with 100 000 plus square feet under roof is one of four such plants each all dedicated to one thing making the best tennis balls possible as perfect as can be millions of them the other plants are at jeanette pennsylvania jonesboro arkansas and in mullengar ireland the tennis ball is many things natural rubber synthetic and natural fibers a half dozen or so chemicals accelerators plasticizers reinforcing pigments measured and tested as they come in the recipes are precise and closely kept secrets now it starts in a mixer two stories high it is called a banbury for the first time the ingredients for a tennis ball come together chewed and whirled in 170 pound bites temperature 250 degrees five minutes later it's done ready for milling on temperature-controlled rollers the patch is further refined it must be absolutely and thoroughly homogeneous durability and performance start here off the mill the new compound travels untouched to the extruder the extruder does its thing temperature speed and pressure each is controlled to the nth degree and here they are pellets still warm shaped automatically a chemical bath is the final preparation for molding the first of three separate curing operations each pellet will become half of a tennis ball center [Music] constant checking assures guarantees absolute tolerances everything must be perfect pellets each identical are placed in a mold many at a time the mold closes leaving an exact time and preset temperature to do the job [Music] minutes later vastly changed the former pellets emerge as sort of a blanket ready for die cutting to separate the perfect half spheres variations in wall thickness weight and overall dimensions are infinitesimal [Music] inline testing is constant and searching this unique operation buffs the edges of the half balls precisely and carefully applies a natural rubber cement each half is ready for mating ready to be sealed and vulcanized to form the center the heart of the tennis ball [Music] another mold different from the first handles the second of the three cures some on the top some on the bottom these molds are pressurized which enables them to trap air inside the ball centers that's how the bounce gets in approximately one atmosphere or about 15 pounds per square inch again time temperature and pressure do the work the seam vulcanizes perfectly now for the first time two halves make a hole the centers are moved into this unique buffing operation mechanically activated the balls are uniformly roughed up in a device lined with abrasive material the rough surface means a better bond between center and cover a vital factor [Music] at this stage the balls are checked for size sizing is visual electronic and mechanical a three-way proposition oversized and undersized centers are screened and separated to find use as simple play balls or other activities not tennis [Music] from another bin the freshly buffed centers drop into this trough-like conveyor for coating with an adhesive made from natural rubber drying in an oven is continuous pre-cemented the balls are ready to have the covers put on the cover material is a felt made of just the right the longest wearing mixture of natural and synthetic fibers pre-coated on one side with cement cutting is automatic with each cover emerging in a sort of modified dog bone shape the new covers are stacked in special racks stacks of covers are dipped in an adhesive to make the edges tacky these edges become the tennis ball seams [Music] semi-automatic cover application is handled by these unique machines developed by general mechanical hands assure a perfect mating of cover and center the newly covered balls are put through a third cure in molds like this which ensure a perfect cover fit and uniform seam and a perfect cover to ball bonding next in drums the balls are tumbled steam is introduced mold marks disappear the flat nap is raised and fluffed [Music] here for the first time complete tennis balls [Music] yet another inspection [Music] a lineup for printing which adds something important the name pen a final check and the balls are inserted in the distinctive can pen known wherever tennis is played the cans are now hermetically sealed to assure a fresh lively ball when play begins [Music] the can by the way has a patented snap off top designed to prevent cut fingers it was introduced by pen [Music] electronic magic is used to check each can in each case after the balls in the cartons have been allowed to age for several days checking each case this marvelous device detects pressure loss in any single can and marks its location on the carton for removal [Music] we've said little about quality control at phoenix and at the other plants quality control is more than a program it is a way of life foremost and constant from raw materials analysis and inspection to the production line to the final product checking is continuous and thorough nothing is overlooked neither slip shot nor chance is tolerated quality is sought after pursued relentlessly the goal is perfection always [Music] hello everybody welcome i'm short now um i'm skip alzheimer and uh welcome to our av geeks lunchtime streaming show still seems short uh yeah so a court case i showed yesterday but the audio wasn't working and i went through a nightmarish a little routine to try to get it to work eventually got it to work but ran out of time to reshow it but the the dialogue or the narration in this is so good that i really wanted to show it and plus to see that footage again of the stress testing the tennis balls all the like push push push all the thing in oh my god so good uh if you don't know me i'm a big fan of assembly line footage uh what we call assembly line porn it's really a footage that is um it's about the manufacturing process and not as much about the end result the other question i have for that film is so penn came up with the the opening thing did uh pringles have to license that technology from pen uh when they came up with the pringles can which is basically the same thing um would love to know um anyhow uh i collect 16 millimeter films and i've been showing them for more than 20 years uh with projectors showing up at different places across the united states in canada and showing films but because of the pandemic we've been doing this remotely via the internet so we have a telecini behind me and behind me and i am playing it live and then digitizing it and then sending it throughout the internet via a series of tubes and pipes um yeah and i've been alternating also with uh films i've already digitized so that we can show more films and not have to wait for me to rewind and do all that stuff so this next film is i think it's russian or at least eastern european it's about hunting and it's animated enjoy [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] to [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so you you you so uh [Music] [Music] [Music] uh what so it's definitely russian and the animation is really quite striking um some people likened it to heavy metal which is interesting it's probably similar they i feel like there's uh some rotoscoping going on where they trace people but um really fascinating 1979 so musically is also really interesting too so i just wanted to mention um thanks folks for buying me coffee now besides buying coffee if you give me enough money for coffee um 25 or more that will get you a t-shirt a new av geeks t-shirt that we're printing up these are brand new on a new color traditionally they were uh school bus yellow and chalkboard green and a lot of people really hated those colors i could tell who the hardcore fans were um when they bought a yellow shirt bright yellow shirt um but yeah these are charcoal gray and so what you would do is you would um where am i sorry um go to buy me a dot com slash av geeks spend 25 dollars on buying me some coffee or more and tell me a mailing address and a shirt size and they're going to be printed up in the next two weeks hopefully by the middle of next week i'll have some and i can ship them out the design is by a fan of av geeks who has since passed away jason polin who is an amazing illustrator artist who came to shows that i did both in raleigh north carolina and in new york he was an illustrator for um new york times for the new yorker and for other folks um really an amazing gifted individual and i think that's an mpro16 projector that he saw a picture of and kind of made made this image of anyhow um so let's go back to um where am i all right i have like a thousand things open uh this next film is um about karate enjoy [Applause] hey [Applause] ah [Applause] [Applause] hey every heart what [Music] all right three-man close quarter committee mr boyarjian mr carrell mr bonadello up here [Music] come on [Music] [Music] shakiness [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] here we go tommy [Music] hey [Music] [Music] okay good thanks [Music] okay [Music] eyes closed hands at sides relax keep a light bulb nothing else in front of you nothing should be in your mind but a light bulb everything else blanked out blanked out just that light bulb relax hands at sides position two minutes two minutes over here hey sharp kicks sharp [ __ ] combination heels hey what do you clinton [Music] yorice yes good job no [Music] uh [Music] hello [Applause] uh good [Applause] uh too many windows um wow so it looks like youtube shut me down for a little while but then i came back maybe because the music from the russian film who knows man who knows um anyways uh yeah we're back yeah so empty hand that's pretty great um pretty interesting footage although they had a script girl which is fascinating to me um i don't know exactly what they were scripting but there you go um right this next film is a management film and it features a recognizable face see if you can figure it out and mention in the comments um this is the case of the missing magnets enjoy [Music] my name is grady this is the plan where i work no i'm no private eye i'm a supervisor but well all those who done it on tv sometimes they get you know what i mean just let something go wrong and who gets assigned to solve the mystery grady that's who and on the morning i'm going to tell you about i had a real case to solve i know you've been in the same boat or one like it so maybe you'll get a charge out of seeing how fast you can spot the clues maybe you can solve it faster than i did try it anyway the case opened with a piece of paper the weekly production chart the trouble was there in cold hard figures man hours of labor up production down and my job find out why it was the case of the missing magnets right away i started getting my arguments ready absenteeism inexperienced help supplies not delivered on schedule you know the alibis trouble was so did the boss [Music] hello talk louder something's wrong with the phone well why don't you have it fixed mr g guy's supposed to come today what's up sally boss want to see me no i just thought you'd like to know mr g he'll be out of town till tomorrow you've got a whole day to fix up your story what story you know mr g [Music] bye-bye yes i knew and i had to find out why production was down not just because the boss would be on my neck but because it was my job the answer was out there somewhere but where then i saw we were still having trouble trying to make a new machine work like it should [Music] and right then and there i spotted the trouble here was the guilty party in the case that machine purely a technical problem like the crackling on the phone working kind of late aren't you a little so are you everybody out there is going home yeah we got trouble with a new machine well this machine won't trouble you anymore oh thanks hey don't you use your right hand for phoning nope why don't you put the phone over here it'll be more convenient cord won't reach yeah i can fix that oh don't trouble ah it's not much trouble really all i've got to do is move the block why are you doing all that it's my job giving service oh i get it it'll look good when you turn in your report no nobody'll know it but me but the way i figure it if i'm going to do a job i'm going to do it right hey you make it sound real important well just how important is the phone to you all right look i was only kidding i know you're just trying to be helpful and i appreciate it this phone's always been a nuisance well it won't trouble you anymore you know i could use a little of that attitude around here that's no big deal we all get a kick out of doing the best job we can so long as we know it's recognized well you've got a big vote of thanks from this satisfied customer is that what you mean well that helps but lots of times we don't even see the customer it's just that we we want to know that our boss recognizes a good job when he sees it oh i see your boss makes you feel important is that it yeah yeah something like that well how does he do it i mean how does he make you want to do your best gee don't ask me he just gets it out of us without always cracking the whip we respect him and he respects us he lets us know he expects us to do a good job and well somehow we can't let him down well so long [Music] thanks again good night it wasn't long before he was gone but what he had said started me thinking i began to remember i remember the time when i was out there working on the line i was working right here i'd begun to remember ernie scott and that other foreman what was his name oh yeah now i remember it was miles yeah miles listen you you know you're way off your production what you been doing all day goofing off it's not my fault most of these parts don't fit why didn't you tell me we'd get new ones i only work here hey who's missing here al whitley is sick again he's been out four days this month talk to him we gotta tighten up around here see tighten up tighten up that was his favorite expression but anybody could tell he ran the loosest shop in the planet the signs were all around absenteeism tardiness turnover sloppy housekeeping griping they never told us anything but we had the healthiest grapevine in the place me i became an expert in spinning my wheels why not i didn't know what was expected of me it was just a job if we ever did good work we never heard about it and the only time we got reprimanded was when the heat was on now look fellas i i don't want to ride you but uh they just had me upstairs and chewed me up now we've got a quota to meet and we've gotta tighten up and meet it they want more magnets and we're gonna turn them out i don't care how you do it but the next time i go upstairs i wanna look good see good so tighten up tighten up tighten up that's all that guy knows why should we break our backs for him all he wants to do is impress his bosses well he's not gonna get more work out of me no more work out of me that was the sum total of miles scoldings and threats and his empty slogan he failed to impress his men he failed to impress the men upstairs and it wasn't long before we had a new foreman the new foreman was ernie scott and what a difference he brought a new outlook a new atmosphere into the department and it wasn't long before well before the whole department had a different attitude i thought you'd like to know hank you haven't had a single reject all week that's what i call good work yeah thanks don't thank me okay say ernie this new stuff that's coming through it doesn't seem to work quite the same what do you think no doubt about it ernie was on top of his department helping us when we needed help jacking us up when we needed jacking up ernie arranged with a company to show us just what happened to the magnets we made and what they did then one of the company salesmen explained how what he sells is the quality of the work we do and how to get orders he has to promise delivery and how if we don't deliver both quality and quantity will all be out of work it was a kind of pep talk but on a solid practical basis and i know we all went back to work feeling our jobs were more important and we were more important then it was the time we had a new machine coming in i guess it's just natural for everybody to resist change but before that new machine arrived ernie had talked it over with each one of us when you add it all up i think the big difference the reason we changed from a gang of gold bricks to a productive team was that we had respect for ernie because he respected us i was getting pretty close to solving the case now and there was a question on my mind i didn't want to ask it but i had to looking out there in the shop i asked myself which kind of a worker would i be working under me that was the vital clue in the case i knew the answer and it told me who the guilty party was [Music] what did that telephone man say if i'm gonna do a job i'm gonna do it right [Music] so i typed out a little memo to myself things to remember about the connection between attitude and productivity and i boiled it down to three words enthusiasm it's contagious pride in themselves and their jobs standards known and enforced there's more to being a good supervisor and more to meeting production goals you know there is every day you're the detective in your department you won't solve every problem the way i solved the case of the missing magnets but if you'll think about the clues we've developed well don't you think some of them might help you crack your next case i hope so anyway that's the end of my story pretty odd isn't it when the guilty party turns out to be the detective wow um normally the bna films the bureau of national affairs films are really boring um that one was wasn't so bad it was kind of like one of those alcoa um like short little management films that i've been showing like trouble with women um promotion bypass etc uh and so the mystery guy the main character the narrator alan oppenheimer you might know him from westworld he played one of the computer tech people um and the voice of skeletor plus he's been on scores and scores of tv shows and movies he's like this a consummate character actor and i think he's still working i still think he's doing voice work um which is really quite something it's quite a career that but that face i was like i know that guy who is that is that lee van glief who is that um but no and he actually played he was on um i think the pilot version of six million dollar man he played rudy wells then it was replaced by somebody else um yeah so great um so uh the next thing we're gonna watch is a film another animated film that i have set up on the telecity it's called mini moons and it looks like it's a james thurber short story enjoy [Music] what once upon a time in a kingdom by the sea there lived a little princess named lenore she was 10 years old going on 11. to see her and took her temperature and felt her pulse lenore it grieves me to see you lying here so pale and warm is there anything your heart desires yes i want the moon the moon yes if i can leave the moon i know i will be better king the moon why of course little princess you shall have the moon now the king had a great many wise men who always got for him anything he wanted send for the lord high chamberlain what is it this time your majesty the princess lenore is ill and wants the moon i want you to get the moon the moon yes the moon m-o-o-n moon get it tonight tomorrow at the latest i have got a great many things for you in my time your majesty it just so happens that i have with me a list of those things let me see now ivory eggs and peacocks rubies opals emerald black orchids pink elephants blue poodles hummingbirds turns angels feathers and unicorns horns giants midgets and mermaids troubadours minstrels and dancing women a pound of butter two dozen eggs with a sack of sugar sorry here my wife heard that enough never mind all that what i want now is the moon the moon is out of the question it is 35 000 miles away bigger than the room that the princess lies in and made of molten copper i cannot get the moon for you blue poodles yes the moon no oh you and your blue poodles leave the room and send the royal wizard in at once what wizardry shall i perform for you now your majesty i want you to get the moon for the princess lenore i have worked a great deal of magic for you in my time your majesty i have squeezed out of turrets shade and eagles tears to ward off witches demons and things that go bump in the nights i have given you sevenly boots the golden touch and the cloak of invisibility the cloak of invisibility didn't work i kept bumping into things the same as ever the cloak is supposed to make you invisible it is not supposed to keep you from bumping into things i got two horns from elbow man [Music] you'll never mind all that the princess lenore wants the moon nobody can get the moon it is 150 000 miles away twice as big as this palace and made of green cheese oh you and your green cheese out of my sight and back to your cave [Music] send the royal mathematician in at once i want you to figure out right now how to get the moon for the princess lenore and i don't want to hear about all the things you've figured out for me since time began yeah i'm glad you mentioned the things i've i figured out for you since time began your majesty i figured out to you the the distance between the horns of the dilemma and the night of the day on the eighth to bed i just i discovered the the length of the sea serpent the how many birds you can catch with the salt in the ocean height million is 796 1132 if it would interest you to know there aren't that many birds i didn't say that i said if there were i don't want to hear about 700 million imaginary birds i want you to get the moon for the princess lenore the moon is 300 000 miles away it is it is half the size of this kingdom and it's round or flat like a coin oni is made of asbestos first of all it is pasted onto the sky nobody nobody can get the moon the king flew into still another rage and sent the royal mathematician away then the king rang for the court jester and the jester came in and sat at the foot of the throne what can i do for you your majesty nobody can do anything for me explain the king the princess lenore wants the moon and she cannot be well till she gets it there is nothing you can do for me except play on your loot something sad how big do they say the moon is and how far away the lord hai chamberlain says it's bigger than the princess lenore's bedroom and 35 000 miles away the royal wizard says it's twice as big as his palace and 150 000 miles away the royal mathematician says it's half the size of this kingdom and 300 000 miles away they're all wise men so they must all be right then the moon must be just as large and as far away as each person thinks it is the thing to do is to find out how big the princess lenore thinks it is and how far away i'll go and ask her your majesty hello court jester tell me how big do you think the moon is it is just a little smaller than my thumbnail but when i hold my thumbnail up in the moon it just comes with it and how far away is it it's not as high as a big tree outside my window sometimes it gets caught in the top branches and what is the moon made of princess oh it's made of gold of course silly the jester went straight to see the royal goldsmith and had him make a tiny golden moon sprung on a golden chain the jester took the moon to the princess and the next day she was well again he could get up and go out into the garden to play but the king's worries were not yet over he knew that the moon would shine in the sky again that night and he didn't want the princess to see it if she did she would know that the moon she wore the chain around her neck wasn't the real moon so the king sent for the lord chamberlain again who suggested some dark glasses for the princess though she wouldn't be able to see the moon shining in the sky no said the king if she wore dark glasses she'd bump into things and peel again go away the king then sent for the royal wizard who suggested stretching black velvet curtains on poles over the palace gardens so the princess wouldn't be able to see the moon in the sky oh said the king black velvet curtains would keep out the air and the princess would get ill again go away finally the king summoned the royal mathematician who suggested setting off fireworks in the garden every night so it would be as light as day and the princess wouldn't be able to see the moon [Music] fireworks would keep the princess little awake said the king she wouldn't get this steven should be ill again go away soon it was dark outside and the king saw the bright red rim of the moon just peeping over the horizon he rang for the court jester and the jester came in and sat at the foot of the throne what can i do for you your majesty oh nobody can do anything for me the moon is coming up and soon it will shine into the princess lenore's bedroom who can explain how the moon can be shining in the sky when it is hanging on a golden chain around her neck who could explain how to get the moon when your wise men said it was too large and too far away it was the princess lenore therefore the princess is wiser than they so i'll ask her and before the king could stop him the jester stepped quietly out and up to princess lenore's bedroom yes tell me princess leno how can the moon be shining in the sky when it is hanging on a golden chain around your neck oh when i lose a tooth a new one grows in this place doesn't it and when the unicorn loses its horn a new one goes in the middle of its forehead i should have thought of that but it's the same with the daylight and it is the same way with the moon i guess it's the same way with everything [Music] silently the jester slipped away from the sleeping princess but before he left the room he went over to the window and winked at the moon for it seemed to the jester that the moon had winked at him so so hello we're back um just a quick word to say thanks so much for your support and buying us coffee that keeps our brains percolating some of you have graciously supported us with past donations and i will reach out to you to get t-shirt sizes um and addresses to send t-shirts to but um yeah if you're interested in getting a t-shirt if you spend 25 dollars buying us coffee we will um and tell us where we're mailing it to in what size uh we will send you a t-shirt uh and they're being printed probably this week maybe early next week i need to find out the details on that but uh thanks so much for your support in watching uh what we do that last film i've never seen that before which it was weird they had that little segment that was upside down and backwards um you know not everyone is like a hit but uh that was a premiere like we've never watched that one on av geeks and that's one of the nice things about being here at the archive is i can go back in the stacks and i can pull the film and say like oh i don't know what this is and i can just put it on and we can watch it um this next film i do know what this is and it's great um and it basically uh is a very niche thing made for a very specific time very specific audience and this is the audiences um high school students who have lunch off and they drive like maniacs so here's noontime nonsense enjoy oops [Music] you saw that didn't you a fairly common scene you can see it in almost every school community in the country just go to a high school and the chances are pretty good if you get there at the right time but you'll get a firsthand chance to observe some noontime nonsense my regular job is handling these and i get along pretty well the reason i do is because i try to find out what you kids like and then give it to you i guess we disc jockeys have to respect our audiences because we can't fool them to stay in business we have to stay popular and to stay popular we have to stay on the level so i'm gonna level with you i'm gonna give you a lecture let's call it an illustrated lecture because after all this is a motion picture and if we can illustrate things to turn a trick well good well in case you're wondering about me well i'll tell you a couple of visitors stopped in after one of my programs and they started talking right down my alley so that's the reason we're here we're making a film which we hope will play some little part in preventing this noontime nonsense and we figure with you telling a story maybe some help well first of all is the situation as serious as you make it sound well judge for yourself there are some figures on accidents involving high school students and i don't think we have them all there are other considerations kids who are responsible and decent drivers get blamed for the actions of the shot riders others get clamped down on by their parents as well as the police get the cars taken away from them derided made fun of just because of the actions of a few show-offs you know these kids you call show-offs and shot writers help pay my salary i've got to be a little careful about what i do besides i'm afraid i have a little more respect for them than you do so what if a few kids are going through a phase where they're finding wait a minute we're talking about life well i'm sorry of course i want to help you only one conditional you give me the dope on the situation but let me tell it my own words okay that's a deal yeah it was a deal and before i knew it i was plunged head first into enough facts and figures to make my head swim i'm gonna give it to you straight as one adult to another because when you're behind the wheel of a car you're adults well they may call you kids teenagers whatever but when you're driving you have exactly the same responsibility as the next fellow an age well the only difference there is that the younger you are the longer you have to regret any carelessness i'm going to give you a case history the story of a high school the story of noontime nonsense event schools let's call it high school x not a very good place to be around noon time at least it wasn't just a few months ago now things are different you don't have to rip your life every time you make a move there's been a change a big change from something that made no sense to something that makes good sense why did it happen what brought it about it wasn't the parents although they might have been tempted to take some kind of action it wasn't the police it was a bit out of their line of duty and it wasn't the school authorities things were bad but not quite bad enough to draw their attention from other vital problems now it wasn't any of these but it could have been and probably would have been just a couple of fellows and girls hadn't started the ball rolling but wait a minute i'm getting ahead of myself let's start at the beginning dangerous isn't it not very safe not very smart either but sometimes it gets you mad this time it got jerry lindsey man you know one of these days some side street sharpshooter isn't gonna miss then we'll see some action oh forget it it's nothing new nothing's happening when something does happen it's gonna be just a little too late there's nothing you can do about it anyway even if you try what do you want to be a goody goody boy maybe i will be a goody goody boy if that's what you call it maybe i can even straighten things out enough so your folks will let you take your car to school if they think a fender has a 50 50 chance of surviving i'm sorry jerry i guess it's really nothing to kid about but what can you do jerry decided what he could do and he did it the secretary of the student council was the one to see he could get things done but would he listen bob i'm worried about myself and my friends being heard or killed sure but what about you what if you'd hit leonard myself today injured or even killed us how would you be feeling right now what could a thing like that do to you for the rest of your life i think that one bob thought about it and did something about it too and at the next meeting of the student council i don't know what more i can say to you about i don't think you have to say anymore jerry do we need any further discussion no no mr stewart would you like to comment on this yes i would as your faculty advisor i've been quite concerned about this noontime nonsense i haven't said anything to you before this because i've been anticipating that you would take action but the only way this problem will be solved is through your realization of the seriousness of the problem and your own willingness to take action well jerry put the problem before the council and the council put the problem before all other business at high school x it was the student council that got the ball rolling at other schools a club or a similar group took over the job where there was no group one was formed to tackle the task in any event all these groups had to take the same basic steps that of forming committees the research committee had the first job they talked to the police checked newspapers from all over the country got literature from their public library and the national safety council as well as the local safety council in addition the public relations committee was formed to awaken and keep student interest in the problem and an activities committee to put in operation any program that the group might decide upon it's three weeks now since our last meeting and i believe the research group has something to report it had plenty to report and before the meeting was over the council had a pretty good idea of what steps had been taken to solve the problem elsewhere one of the most common things they found was registration of all cars brought to school safety lanes were set up cars were checked for safety shops were set up where students could fix their own cars student courts were set up to enforce regulations staggered lunch hours helped to prevent some joyriding it's true not everything worked but there were some things that really seemed to work when it came to keeping noontime driving down to a minimum some schools showed movies there were dances ping pong tournaments discussion groups and other recreational activities this is it then one a recreation program at noon with movies or dancing two special permits required for all cars driven during the noon hour three safety lane inspection with safety stickers required for all cars four auto shop instruction for car maintenance five review committee six and plenty of promotion okay kids let's go to work and work they did hard but first they had to recruit help from other fellows and girls for a plan that's going to help everyone needs help from almost everyone to put it over this support wasn't hard to get though because there were plenty of students who felt like jerry now they were glad to get the chance to do something about it movies were obtained through school authorities and shown at noon on other days dances were held in the gym as part of the noontime recreation program some of the fellows and girls bound to their surprise that gliding to good music on rubber heels beats screeching around sharp turns on rubber wheels by visiting local garages and city testing lanes students found out proper procedure for setting up a safety inspection lane in the school parking lot and did so with the cooperation of the police department cars didn't just get safety stickers they had to earn them when a car was judged safe it got a sticker no car without a safety sticker could be brought to school and the driver had to have a pretty good reason for doing so but to drive at noon required a special permit it became pretty tough for careless drivers to flaunt the safety rules the auto shop was a big success it gave many fellows a chance to learn more about their cars mr stewart on the basis of his past experience was selected to teach the class and driving all right bob who has the right away as you put it mr stewart whenever there's any doubt always give it to the other fellow all sure there were still some offenders but a student review committee was formed and in those few cases where repeated warnings failed to bring the proper results members of the faculty willingly cooperated now if you have to show off there are ways of doing it other than peeling and wheeling around the parking lots and streets during noon time now we're going to suspend your driving permit for three weeks but if this happens again we'll have to revoke it for the remainder of the school year the plan got lots of promotion too [Music] how's this for next week what's your usual standard genie the student paper and even the local town newspapers kept getting material which kept enthusiasm in the noon time driving program at a high pitch whether it was a headline or an editorial hardly a day passed without some reference to the death of noontime nonsense hi jerry hi do you want to ride home from school who is me in what my folks car they let you take it to school well it's a sense now [Music] and that's the story of high school x the story of how the noontime nonsense problem was solved there i know there are probably many other ways of solving the same problem but the important thing is that it must be done just think about it and remember that it doesn't take much to save a lot of lives and save a lot of injuries just a few fellows and girls with a little determination you know i have a little selfish interest in this too the competition between us disc jockeys nowadays is getting pretty rough and to keep my audience i want to make sure that it stays alive and healthy [Music] thanks what's fascinating about this is that this was enough enough of a problem uh nationally or at least regionally that they made a film about it like it wasn't just one high school or one county it was all over the place high school students were going driving and going nuts um i had two other films about tinacide uh last date and of course tina side and so this was definitely uh a problem like high school students were going nuts and this is actually supposedly like so i graduated in 84 from high school and supposedly in the early 80s before i came to school seniors were allowed to leave for lunch until somebody got killed in a car accident um driving and then they took those privileges away so it was still a problem even much much much much later anyways thanks for tuning in today sean thank you for the coffee and you'll get a t-shirt if you want to order a t-shirt basically you go to this link
