e e e is is hi everybody welcome I'm skip Alzheimer and for some reason why is this oh okay um I'm Skip bimer and this is a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and think better about them and about ourselves sometimes um that film was awesome and I'm going to have to track it down with the soundtrack because it looks like the nordine group uh did the soundtrack which could potentially be Ken nordine um really really awesome uh I love me some stop motion animation and uh that does not disappoint um yeah so behind me I have a scanner set up uh cintel black magic scanner and we are going to watch a film called watch how much more meta can you get about than that so what do we think this film is about is it about watching is it about a watch um like a wristatch let's see enjoy [Music] [Applause] I wish you could go outside too sweetie but you've been sick and you have to stay in the house [Music] mom was away for the afternoon and I was home by myself it was [Music] boring hi can can you play well I'm afraid I can't because um I'm just getting over for the Ms and Mom said I have to stay inside but I already had the mom and me and the chicken pffs well I can't come out anyway and you can't come in could I just come in for a second and play well maybe will I call her and ask cuz she said I should call if someone wanted in God can I come in all right come on I knew I shouldn't have let her again but I did is she there no no one is there you think I can stay well I guess maybe you can and then I'll call her back all right H well come on okay like look at this see this can't look one two add [Music] one two add add one two add one two add one two add one two add guy this comic book has 32 pages and 12 ads in it this is boring let's do something know hard thing about making the peanut butter sandwich is that you got it always falls off the knife there no I mean you know go twist twist oops need some [Applause] more let's go upstairs it's Bing downstairs downstairs hey the Kitty's coming up with us he's what do you want to do I don't know why I took him upstairs I want go to my dad's room playing organ okay well we shouldn't but um if we're real careful we could my dad's kind of me [Applause] not so rough you see you just pedal those then pull out these see I knew you weren't supposed to get into my dad's [Music] stuff not quite so because you can breath real lazyy so just [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I wasn't even thinking about getting into my dad's stuff but then I remember the watch careful because if my dad saw boy he'd be mad okay look at all these neat old things like this thing neat bottle and here's the watch see [Music] oh that's the wrong side I think it's no oh I guess it is see listen to that too uh [Music] say hey look at here don't don't touch it cuz it's real old and everything look at these he hey there's my grandfather he's wearing this watch right here see right here guys he guys are [Music] funny oh he's Bal cig oh no will your dad get really mad real mad just in platoon doesn't even tip either boy is going to be real mad um I it's time for me to go okay um wait you broke the watch but I got to go but wait I got to go yeah [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] home where are you [Music] a [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] I love it um I love the uh um just the moral aspect of it um and so I actually have notes um so even though it's distributed by encyclopedia bratanic it was actually made by Northwestern Incorporated who all right here's some questions for you for discussion and class participation one uh what do you do to amuse yourself when you are home with an illness um and think back to the 70s or before your phone and the internet and cable television do you think your parents really understand how bored you can get sometimes is there anything that you or they can do about this other than wait until you are feeling better two should Ian have invited his friend into the house no do how do you think Ian's parents would have responded uh to his doing this even though nothing had been broken should Ian have brought Greg upstairs to look at uh his father's things no um could the boys have been more careful when they were examining the watch yes if they had ended up being more careful about the watch uh might they have ended up breaking something else to which they were not so attentive that's interesting um for how careful is it possible to be how responsible is it possible to be how does being careful or responsible interfere with having fun or uh how does having fun interfere with being careful or responsible five how might PE different people react finding out that their son had broken a cherished possession of theirs if you were Ian's mother which of the following best reaction to the breaking of the watch a I'm going to beat the devil out of you B that's okay don't worry about it C wait till your father gets home D your allowance will be cut in half until the damage to the watch is paid for E you were wrong to go through your father's things but it's not so serious and the watch can be repaired discuss the merits and shortcomings of each of these responses as well as others that you can suggest this is great anyways this is the deal so ideally a teacher would show this uh and then have discussion afterwards so that's the whole deal with making it educational um all right um educational filmmakers can think that kids love zoos so there's lots and lots of films about zoos and so you know it's one of these films that doesn't have narration so you know there's a lot of room for kids to insert teachers to insert their own dialogue and and you know you show this film just like the previous film you show it and then you have uh kids talk about it write about it draw pictures about it uh create their own stories about it um yeah I know some adults can't stand the open narrative like that they're just like what is this what's the point of this film um but it's about getting it's being provocative and giving imagery and events to get kids to think um all right so I have a lot of religious films uh almost all of them are Christian um but I have one that is uh Jewish and um so this is a festival of Faith enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] Jerry stop gulping your stay in place you hardly ate a thing I'm not hungry you've been fidgeting all morning what's wrong nothing she's been confirmed in 3 weeks she's a little nervous I think you've taken on too many weekend activities you look tired oh mother reading to the blind once a week isn't tiring then there's your work work with the Girl Scouts oh really mother the president of our Temple Sisterhood told me what good work you've been doing that was nice of her can we go now yes Dad I'm sorry you going to be late P we will be unless you hurry and get your books drive carefully bye bye [Music] h this hair is driving me crazy Susan you look worried about something does it show that much what's wrong boyfriend trouble no well then what's the matter my folks asked me this morning at practiced what was wrong but I didn't feel like telling him Judy are you disturbed by things in class here what kind of things well what we're learning I don't know what you mean take the ten command for example do you believe they were given to Moses on that SI Susan what are you trying to say I don't believe it that's what I'm trying to say nor the way we're told the world began in fact I'm skeptical about a lot of things were told in religious school and Confirmation only 3 weeks away what brought this on don't you ever question anything I mean well just because someone says something to you does that mean it's so Susan what are you turning into an atheist who is an atheist good morning good morning girls it's time for class to begin we'll talk about it in there will someone tell me what shuis means Bill Festival of weeks and why does it have his name Judy because it's seven weeks after Passover yes that's why it's also called Pentecost which means 50 days after Passover what else is shabor called Festival of the first fruit of the spring that's right but there's something more important Judy shuis is the Festival of Faith the anniversary of the day on which the Ten Commandments were given yes a festival of faith and remember what I told you in Judaism faith is not blind obedience it's based on understanding Susan have you some questions yes I have may I talk plainly certainly you know we always speak our mind in confirmation class it's how we seek the answers to questions in the temple by asking and studying I just can't believe the Ten Commandments are given the way the Bible says oh well for the moment let's say you can't does that make the Ten Commandments less important they are the foundation of our civilized society Susan why do we celebrate shivu at confirmation time I remember what you said we confirm what the Israelites affirmed at sin yes that was the beginning of their spiritual majority that's why shuis also means growth but Rabbi what I'm talking about is the conflict between science and religion is it really a conflict when science says the world began one way and religion says it began another way Susan the purpose of the creation story is not to tell you how the world was made but to bring home the fact that the world is a unit and that all men are part of one family Rabbi isn't it true that many of the leading scientists have themselves expressed their belief in God certainly science strengthens our faith in God science tells us that everything has a cause shall we say only in the World Without a Cause is the world itself shall we say that there is no order or plan in nature and in life I guess [Music] not Susan You're A Million Miles Away dad will you answer a question frankly for me well I'll try do you think I'm a religious person of course I do why do you ask sometimes I don't think I am you don't why not this morning I I told the rabbi that I was skeptical about many things we learned in class and what did the rabbi say the doubt was understand understandable at my age and that he encouraged it a good answer the rabbi said we we searched for answers through asking and studying but can a religious person have doubts of course my dear doubt is the beginning of understanding when we start with doubt we go on to investigate and finally discover what truth is I'm beginning to to understand you ask if you're a religious person how can you deny it when for so many Saturdays you've given up your own enjoyment to read to the Blind and to help the Girl Scouts isn't that religion in action but then why do we need organized religion because the good things that religion seeks to accomplish require group operation and cooperation if we want a better world we must work with others to bring it about isn't that right right I think so dad [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] God and Father at this our confirmation service our hearts are filled with joy and thankfulness to thee grant that the good seed we sow May ripen into a harvest of righteousness and Truth amen we hereby confirm what our forefathers affirmed on Mount s I that we will hearken and Obey these Commandments the moral teachings of our faith and of all [Music] mankind I am the Lord thy God Thou shalt have no other God but me Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy honor thy father and thy mother Thou shalt not murder Thou shalt not commit adultery Thou shalt not steal Thou shalt not beare false witness against thy neighbor Thou shalt not covet today we link ourselves with our ancestors in the great drama that took place on Mount Si centuries ago since then the Ten Commandments have served as the inspiration for the great charters of Human Rights including the Declaration of Independence [Music] shis is a call to dedicate ourselves to the service of God not in blind obedience but seeking how it can best use the powers that God gave us amen the Bible tells us these Commandments were written on tablets of stone now let us join with our forefathers and these confirmant in the resolve to write them upon the T of our hearts to serve as a guide to righteous Living For All [Music] Mankind may the Lord bless the and keep thee may the Lord let his countenance shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee may the Lord lift up his countenance upon thee and give thee peace amen [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] h [Music] [Music] so shephard stedwick I think that's how you pronounced his last name he shows up in a veneral disease film I have called No for sure um he plays a doctor who is learning about what has to be done to uh educate young men and women about venal disease um and uh there are two versions of the film one version uh actually shows um how to use a condom and the other one doesn't um but both of them show um penises with sores so there you go shepherd shepherd strudwick um yeah so like I said I don't have a whole lot of uh of uh Hebrew or uh Jewish uh religious films um it's almost all Christian and you know so family films was a big um Protestant basically skewed Lutheran and they had a whole teenage series about teenagers who were beginning to doubt their faith or were being challenged in ways um like there's teenage challenge there's teenage conflict um and I've shown some of them in the past uh and so they're they're all trying to address that that kind of uh you know a young adult who's smart who's beginning to learn about things and is just having some doubts um and of course they at the end figure it all out um let's watch a film about Washington DC this is a great film because it actually features Library of Congress uh some of their film Library uh which now is no longer in Washington DC but is in C pepper Virginia so enjoy [Music] Washington DC Capital City of the United States focal point for international representation World acclaimed Center of arts and [Music] culture it has no more renowned Monument than the great Dome that rises majestically over the United States capital when construction began on the capital in 1793 Washington DC was all swamp and the nation was still in its infancy only 3 years earlier Congress had decided to place the seat of the new government on this site along the pomac river Pierre charl laon a French engineer was selected to lay out a plan for the new city laon's design featured a grand city radiating from the capital President Washington himself laid the capital's Cornerstone both wings of the new building were finally completed in 1811 but during the War of 1812 invading British soldiers Set Fire to the building almost totally destroying it since its reconstruction following the fire the capital has continued to grow with the expanding nation in 1962 the last major modification of the building was completed the expansion of the East Front the new facade clad the original deteriorating limestone in marble and extended the central section by 32 1/2 ft the capital retunda fills with thousands of visitors every day its huge Dome has become a symbol of the American Republic the Dome over our heads is one of the largest in the world it's made out of cast iron it's in two layers and weighs almost 9 million lb it was constructed basically during the time of the Civil War the the capital houses the Congress or legislative branch of government composed of the House of Representatives and the Senate congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro of New York describes the significance of the House of Representatives The house's major strength lies in its power to initiate money bills Taxation and appropriation for federal spending but its major importance lies in the way it represents the American people each representative is elected only by the voters of a single congressional district this allows a closer relationship between elected representatives and their constituents and helps ensure that the will of the American people is heard by their [Music] government near the present House of Representatives chamber is the original House chamber now known as Statuary Hall it was set aside in 1864 to hold statues of noted C citizens from each of the states opposite the house Wing is the Senate Wing Senator Howard Metson bomb of Ohio explains the Senate's constitutional responsibilities along with the members of the House of Representatives we and the senate share the obligation to represent the people of the United States in setting public policy and enacting federal laws this is the responsibility given to us by the Constitution the Senate is the living symbol of our Union of states to fulfill its highest ideal it must not only Serve the People it must lead them there's no greater symbol of the executive branch of government than the executive Mansion known more familiarly as the White House it is both the office and home of the president of the United States like the capital it draws huge numbers of visitors more than a million and a half every year Mrs Ronald Reagan explains the significance of the executive Mansion when you visit the White House it's something like the landlord visiting the tenant cu the White House belongs to all the American people the president's family lives here only while the president is in office many important state events take place here on the White House lawn the president and first lady often greet outstanding Americans or foreign dignitaries sometimes the president signs legislation into law in outdoor [Music] ceremonies the president's family lives on the second floor of the White [Music] House on the first floor are the public rooms walking down the Halls I'm almost overcome with history and I think that every president except George Washington lived here can you imagine President Jefferson striding down a [Music] corridor or President Lincoln looking thoughtfully out a window [Music] the rooms on this floor are used to receive and entertain official [Music] visitors as the residents of the White House have changed over the years so has the White House [Music] itself laundry doesn't hang to dry in the east as it did during Abigail Adam's [Music] day and Teddy Roosevelt's moose head no longer stares down from the wall of the state dining room on distinguished guests but whatever changes from one Administration to the next the White House always maintains its character and dignity this wonderful historic house symbolizes the continent ity of our democracy from generation to [Music] generation across from the White House the old executive office building holds the offices of many of the President's advisers AIDS and other staff built in the late 1800s to house the war department many of its rooms are highly ornamented the Vice President also maintains Offices here the official residence of the vice president is several miles away on the grounds of the United States military Observatory the third branch of the United States government is the Judiciary embodied in the Supreme Court as the highest tribunal this court is charged with ensuring Equal justice under the law for the American [Music] people the Constitution the most sacred document in the nation contains the principle by which the American Republic functions it is enshrined at the National Archives where visitors May view it because of its historical importance it is carefully protected at the end of each day lowered from its glass case into a vault deep below the archives [Music] floor among the large larest of the federal government agencies is the Department of Defense housed in a huge complex called The Pentagon the defense department is responsible for keeping peace while preserving freedom to meet this goal it deters International Conflict by maintaining armed forces that are capable and ready [Music] inside top ranking military officials have their [Music] [Music] offices the tightly guarded Pentagon war room is the place where military leaders study Global military activity and activate lines of Defense in times of crisis in Arlington National Cemetery lie the remains of thousands who have served in the United States armed forces during conflicts from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier memorializes the unknown Dead who fought in World Wars 1 and 2 and in the Korean War at the far end of the Washington mall that stretches before the capital stands a long wedge of Black Stone engraved on it are the names of the 57 1,692 Americans who died in the Vietnam [Music] War one of the government facilities most important to the Daily lives of American citizens is the treasury Department's Bureau of printing and Engraving high-speed printers turn out billions of postage [Music] stamps the printed sheets are perforated cut and packaged for delivery to the nation's post offices [Music] the bureau also produces billions of dollars in United States currency before they are cut into individual bills many notes are printed together on large sheets of special highquality paper and carefully inspected for defect flawed money will be shredded and [Applause] [Music] burned virtually all the major organizations in the country maintain offices in Washington here they Lobby the Congress and the president in order to voice their opinions about what the government is doing and nations from around the world maintain embassies and other institutions in Washington to represent their interest in international Affairs many individuals exercise their freedom of speech in the form of protests on any given day numerous signs and posters can be seen around government buildings often times people rally together in organized marches to alert officials of their feelings on important political issues but Washington is not only a city of government and politics the Washington National Cathedral represents the spiritual aspirations of the nation and the world though chartered by Congress as a national House of Prayer in 189 3 the cathedral is still under construction as private donations are made from solemn moments of mourning for the deaths of national and world leaders to festivals of Thanksgiving for the end of a war the cathedral is a place for all Humanity to confirm its common Bond [Music] among its many stained glass windows is one that commemorates the landing on the moon a moon rock is embedded in its colorful design [Applause] [Music] important collections of reference materials such as books manuscripts recordings and films are kept at the Library of Congress established primarily as a research facility for the Congress the library also provides services to other libraries around the world and makes its vast resources available to the [Music] public hundreds of people use the libraries various reading rooms daily its Holdings include almost 80 million items among them 20 million books and pamphlets in some 60 languages issues of over 12200 newspapers some dating back to the 17th century and more than 250,000 reels of Motion Pictures new materials are acquired at the rate of 10 items per minute both Scholars and Casual tourists are attracted to the city's many specialized libraries and museums the fuler Shakespeare Memorial Library is one of the world's great independent research libraries a center for books and manuscripts written during the Renaissance Priceless books dating back more than six centuries are kept in a protective temperature and humidity controlled vault among the folders most precious Holdings are some of the earliest printed works of [Music] Shakespeare the Smithsonian institution is the largest Museum complex in the world most of its 13 museums are located along the National Mall to the west of the Capital One of the most popular is the National Air and Space Museum which features exhibits of the history of flight from aircraft to spacecraft the two buildings of the National Gallery of Art contain one of the world's finest collections of European and American art its East Building is itself an impressive piece of [Music] architecture the design is among the Alexander Calder constantly sweeps over the space the west building offers the most comprehensive survey of Italian sculpture and painting in the Western Hemisphere including the only painting outside Europe generally acknowledged to be by Leonardo da Vinci the beautiful sometimes disturbing work in the hershorn museum and sculpture garden exemplify changes that have shaken the art World during the beloved [Music] presidents Abraham Lincoln the Great emancipator Thomas Jefferson author of the Declaration of Independence [Music] and the great Obelisk dedicated to George Washington father of our country George Washington the first president of the United States the patriot who laid the Cornerstone for the capital the citizen after whom the city of Washington DC takes its name la uh yeah so um the hershorn that's why my wife and I went to DC a couple of weeks ago and it was not as creepy as that little segment had it be um was really weird it's like this is the take we're going to take on this uh the sculpture garden which is really quite quite nice but you know creepy I I don't know um yeah and so you know regardless of how you feel politically uh DC is is beautiful it's really really quite stunning um even with all the food trucks blurring music and all the um tourists there are some really kind of fascinating F looks at at the uh what What's there the landmarks and the buildings and all that and so I recommend it if you haven't been you should go uh don't go when it's really hot though because that's that just makes everything more miserable um thanks for tuning in today very
