hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films uh this is a pre-recorded show which means either i don't have internet uh don't have power or i'm not at the archives i might be uh running errands traipsing around the world um buried in a hole who knows so many different options uh we're going to get started with a film where we've been scanning a lot of the coronet films and uh some time ago a couple of months ago i showed the a b roll the raw material uh camera element from a film called cleanliness and health but there was no soundtrack it was all just the visuals and beautiful kodachrome color um well we have a copy of the film it's in black and white uh it's beat up but here it is so just in case you were wondering like what was the story behind that film with the doctor and that kid looking through a microscope here it is cleanliness and health [Music] have you ever heard someone say a little dirt won't hurt you do you ever ask yourself why should i wash well we doctors hear things like that quite often today i have part of the answer under this microscope to show david but wait a minute let me tell you how this began a couple of days ago david was in my office for a throat treatment his sore throat had really hurt for a while but it was better what makes people sick anyway and i replied by asking what do you think are the most dangerous living things in the world oh david fought lions and tigers no lions and tigers don't try again snakes perhaps poisonous snakes kill comparatively few people a year far more dangerous are some of the tiny things that are all around us they make millions of people sick every year even kill some they are so tiny that on just the head of an ordinary pin there can be more than a thousand micro organisms called germs these germs cause infections as in david's throat a sneeze or a cough like that may spread them would you like to see the germs that cause throat trouble well i brought out a culture plate a sterilized dish coated with a special jelly and i asked david to cough onto it these few germs are too small to be seen but under the right conditions each one may turn into more than a million germs as i got ready to swab david's throat i thought of a good demonstration maybe we could actually see those germs you see i put this on his throat to kill the germs it's called an antiseptic and if i were to use an antiseptic to kill the germs on half of david's culture plate and let the other half grow then perhaps we could see evidence of the growth and of the death of germs germs need food on this plate they feed on the jelly in your body they feed on you and in the warmth of this special oven they thrive just as they do in your body that was a few days ago now that we've finished david's last throat treatment we're getting ready to look for the germs let's see what's here each spot might be a colony of millions of germs and look what the antiseptic has done on this side killed them before they even got started there's proof of how germs grow and how they can be killed by antiseptics now let's use the microscope to magnify them hundreds of times and see what they look like when the germs are moved to a slide this is what we see these are just a few of the millions of germs that grew from those in david's throat david says they don't look bad are they all harmful well germs are only part of a whole world of tiny living things some tiny things do us a great deal of good on this slide are microorganisms that make cheese they give it a flavor even more important are microorganisms like these the white bodies which are breaking down the dark soil particles into materials needed by plants useful microorganisms are in many places just as germs are do you ever put your fingers in your mouth do you ever chew on a pencil do you ever take a bite from someone else's candy or fruit the mouth is only one of the ways the germs get inside the body they also enter through the skin let's take a look at a piece of skin you can see the various layers there is a hard outer skin or epidermis that forms a protective wall against germs look at a tiny portion of skin through that cut germs can enter and cause trouble inside your body germs thrive on the warmth and food sometimes your white cells defend your body against this invasion but this usually hurts you to prevent this painful battle or a more serious illness it's wise to kill the germs if possible we use an antiseptic on even a small cut a scratch we clean and sterilize everything we use that might bring dirt or germs into your body and we keep germs from entering breaks in the skin by a clean sterilized bandage we hope no one ever uses a dirty handkerchief for a bandage now david wants to know if all these germs were killed by some powerful antiseptic then we wouldn't have to wash would we no there's more to keeping clean than just avoiding germs here is a sweat gland and a pore in the skin do you know the functions of our skin first it keeps out dirt and germs as we have already seen second it passes off waste material and water through the pores and third it cools the body as the water or sweat evaporates from it these sweat glands pass water and waste materials about one quart a day out through all the pores in your skin the water evaporates but the waste material is left behind and will clog the pores unless you remove it this waste mixes with oil that comes out from oil glands this oil lubricates your skin but it also combines with grime to form a clogging mixture david can't quite believe that all this is going on in his skin all the time is he really oozing out water and oil when you put your fingers on a clean glass plate you can see the oily fingerprints made by your skin you know that oil and water do not mix don't you what happens when we use just plain water to try to remove the oil and dirt mixture from your skin or from the glass plate water alone doesn't really do a good job does it now when soap is applied and the glass is rinsed the dirt and oil are removed as well as any germs here's what happens take the oil and grease from your finger apply soap and you'll see that the soap film gets around and under the oil and loosens it along with the dirt and yes it's easy to understand that soap is important to getting your skin clean what else have we learned with david one thing we've seen a few of the tiny germs that may be anywhere around us another thing we learned is how germs grow and cause infections when they get inside and we've seen how the skin must be clean so sweat can carry off wastes and cool the body yes it might be a good time to wash right now but what was that about soap helping remove the dirt and oil and germs that's right good lather rubbed into the knuckles and all the cracks of your hands is a fine step on the road to health [Music] such happy hand-washing music um one of the things i was thinking about about this uh film is like wow that doctor just got all has all the spare time to sit around and just answer this kid's questions about germs um certainly i've yet to see a doctor nowadays especially a general practitioner who has free time um yeah you might have noticed the audio was going in and out with that and also how the frame was kind of going that's because that film was uh shrunken and it was basically it was a situation where we were trying to keep our finger on the telecini to try to get it to where it keeps up and you know and so the basically the film was kind of like warping so it wasn't lying flat on the optical sound head so it was going yeah quiet loud quiet loud maybe more than you want to know but you know hey this is av geek so we we geek out about the the technologies um all right this next film is encyclopedia britannica and it's about getting your hands dirty it's the opposite of what we just saw so this frank tends the garden [Music] do you have a garden in your backyard frank and i are worried about our gut now it is late afternoon and it looks as though there will be no rain see how dry the soil is it hasn't rained for days and days what can we do frank would you like to water the garden that's a good idea frank answers so frank will water the garden and i will get the hose frank sees that all the plants are wilting but he also sees something else it is penny his dog look penny is chasing fluff brave fluff will not run good for you fluff says frank but frank has work to do here's the hose to water the garden fluff settles down she sees what frank is doing frank turns on the water the water runs down through the hose can you see it it goes around and around around and around and it comes out here but penny what are you doing penny is having fun as frank turns the water off and on what fun per penny as frank turns the water on and off penny almost catches it and then it's gone where is it penny there it is what fun for penny and portfolio but frank has work to do all right that's enough penny i must water the garden says frank but penny still wants to play with the water watch him frank laughs at his funny dog then he settles down to work the cool water flows among the thirsty plants the cool water sinks into the dry ground it flows under the lettuce leaves and the beets yes frank is watering the garden very carefully for it was very dry and penny is very wet but what does he see why it's fluff hiding among the beets fluff you shouldn't be in the garden says frank now go on uh-oh penny sees that fluff almost got wet and here comes jean frank's sister you squirted water on fluff she says no gene i just didn't want her in the garden says frank but jean is very angry and fluff is very happy when gene takes her out fluff is jean's kitty and fluff almost got wet when frank chased her out of the garden poor kitty says gene everything's all right now frank has watered nearly all the plants in the garden but he is very sorry that he made gene angry and gene is still very angry there kitty she says i won't let bad old frank hurt you there it's all right now there kitty but what can frank do to make up with gene he has an idea look gene look what i've made i've made a rainbow a rainbow with the water and the sunlight isn't it pretty gene oh my thanks frank gene is still angry with me what can i do now he thinks to make up with her gene would you like to take a shower under the hose do you think gene will oh that would be fun frank so gene isn't angry anymore come on says frank let's get our bathing suits on and what about penny will penny take a shower and what about fluff will fluff take a shower but here come gene and frank they're both ready for a cool shower under the hose frank carefully fixes the nozzle of the hose as high as he can reach now for the water turn it on gene but a fine shower but what about penny penny do you want to take a shower with gene and frank or have you had enough water for today what about it penny in we go and so penny joins frank and gene frank is glad that gene is no longer angry and jeanne is glad too because she didn't like being angry and now they can enjoy a cool shower at the end of a hot day the cool water has been good for the garden too see how fresh the plants look [Music] so i was looking here in the database um we've shown uh frank and his dog i'm gonna leave my reading glasses on because my eyes are uh to explode so i've got multiple copies of frank in his dog um i feel like there's one where frank flies a kite is that one it's just flying a claim yeah flying a kite and then gene shows up in a couple of these films there's gene enter dolls and then there's um surprise for gene um yeah we might have to show more of these um you know so uh um this is definitely made for young kids this is probably kindergarten first grade second grade and this is before kids know how to read but this is part of what's called language arts where kids will watch this film the teacher then discusses with the kids and then they um either come up with drawings come up with stories if they are beginning to write they might write their own story related to um this uh you know it's it's kind of beginning to explore a language that's what these films are about so there you go this next film is a fable and um it's one of those regrettable films that uses live animals to tell a story and it's like this is all indoors and where did these animals come from and but they're interesting nonetheless so here's frog i'm sorry fox in the [Music] oh rooster i know many stories about reigning the fox santa clara the rooster nanny the goat skulky the skunk poppy the frog and mrs fosterman family one of the stories i like best i call the fox and the roosters [Music] really there is a sly scheming fox who likes to eat chickens santa clear is a big fat booster handsome and noisy now all of santa clara's friends call him kenny just as i do well our story begins one bright morning painted is out hunting for his sister at the same time charity is busy getting his breakfast he's topping it off right about now with a big fat juicy angle room sort of a dessert well after breakfast teddy has a habit of flying up to his favorite perch and trying to attract the attention of his friends well this morning his friend seemed to pay no attention to him so he cries again [Music] that noisy rooster noisy fellow [Music] [Applause] deep in the woods drainage here is the crown [Music] and it's the signal that he's been waiting for to him it means a nice big fat rooster for breakfast ah yes and on his way he meets skunky [Music] well usually he let skunky come along but today things are different because he's invited another friend mrs possum and her family to join him now how can raymond get rid of skunky until after breakfast should he chase him away or should he hide from it or up the head is the frog part and skunky reaches it first then he looks normal placed across he asks happy the frog to get out of his way let him pass but then instead of going safely around the pond skunky tries for a shortcut and he bucks the soldiers of the father oh oh he takes his soaking himself well he forgets all about breakfast makes for the woods to dry off of course raina just very happy to be really skunky but he doesn't want anyone to know that that's so when he reaches the pond he growls so you're too blamed for my good friend falling in the water when you can't beat my friends that way and then he gives puppy the shaking of his life finally he snows i know you're a friend of that rooster and i'm going to eat him and if you warn him i'll eat you too well as one puppy raining rolls off to find the rooster when the fox sees the chatty is on the fence well about reach he growls to himself now what i need is a scheme to get him down here on the ground now let's see i think i'll make believe that all of the animals have agreed to be friends and if he believes that he'll come down for your thoughts mr fox well wiener dances that most politely well thank you kindly my good friend graham friends since when have you and i've been friends well this is news to me too why of course we're friends haven't you heard the animals have a new plan now no more fighting or hurting each other yes i'd be happy to tell you all about it in fact i came over today just to explain the plan to you so come on down like a good feather where we can talk more easily how do i know that i can trust you trust me now that we're all such good friends oh no baby i've been wrong about that fox he acts as if he's changed for the better i guess i will find out well all this time happy the frog has been missing he knows that fox's real friend he says to himself oh i must warn my friend candy and so he cooks a warning to champion [Music] and can't he hears the warning just in time and he stays on his perch and really thinks oh why didn't i eat that frog when i had him and hoppy remembers reigning sharp teeth and he says to himself oh i'd better go hide but what does rainey do now he's hungrier than ever chad he's still out of reach huh well just then when it happens to see the goat well that gives him a new idea he says to chaddy look the dog isn't afraid of me so why are you well chad he wonders about that so he has to go are you afraid of the fox why certainly not he's the goat isn't why are you afraid just a minute why should i be afraid i could toss you over the fence with these strong horns of mine well none of reynard's schemes is working but what is this huh why is mrs parson and his family remember she's the fox's friend but how can she help the fox to get his breakfast she's loaded down and slow moving and she heads for chandi's threats then up she climbs and thinks reynard ah this is the scheme that will surely work well candy watches the strange looking family come closer and closer a nice large family he thinks and it's good at the mother you take them for a ride last time he asked why i just came to tell you about that mr fox he's an honest fellow and i know that he's a friend of yours because he told me self himself so why don't you fly down and have a talk with him now will chanty be fooled by the possum and fly down oh if he does the fox will surely eat him up but no after all mrs parsons talk tammy isn't food and he says i just don't trust that box he looks so hungry by now mrs boston knows she can't convince candy that vinnie is his friend so she tries to shove him off his perch [Music] for a second looks as if chad is a brother i'll give me a scare for once teddy seems frightened too imagine how rain it feels he grows to himself no use trying schemes anymore i can see that schemes alone will never beam down i guess i'll just have to scare him off his perch like well sure it's a close call for charity but she finally makes it up to the safety of my tree even now raynard isn't ready to give up but how can we scare him away well just then i see something in the distance that gives me an idea the farmer's dog now foxes are afraid of dogs so i whispered to chatty let's make believe that dogs are coming for champions and he cries out [Music] well the fox can't see what's coming and he asks what do you see oh nothing much just a dog and he's coming this way a dog coming this way well then i must be going going why leave now why we're all friends a dog won't hurt you well maybe he's a stranger besides i remember an appointment that i must keep and then he disappears into the forest well i decide to make sure that ringlead is really gone so i fly around to look [Music] and sure that he's run away when i fly back to tell chatty he flops down to his favorite perch and throws a big boost i on the fox's games for me but his friends know better nanny is so disgusted she says look here teddy you're not so smart it was happy the frog who whines you and saved your life as for you you're just a noisy boastful old rooster well sir i agree with danny the ghost but i do think that our story proves that even a clever steamer like the fox can be outsmarted especially if we all help one another out like real true friends [Music] um it was a happy ending but really was it happy ending i can only imagine what the uh comments are uh like for uh these last two films um i'm i'm pre-recorded so um when this airs i might actually have access to seeing the comments um so i'll chime in if i am around but uh yikes um problematic films all the way around um if you like what you saw uh even though i'm not here live in person um would love a uh uh some coffee because i no matter where i am if i'm not in front of my computer i'm gonna probably still need coffee and so you can go to buy me a coffee dot com slash av geeks you can also go to avgeeks.com and see other shows we've done you can buy dvds and um you know even this is a pre-recorded show we would love a like uh you can subscribe to uh these premieres or whatever uh you can also ring the notification bell and as always we love when you comment and certainly share these um stream streaming shows that we do with um the rest of the world uh this next film is by twa which is a defunct airline and um this one is is great because it's you know it's a promotional film um try to it's kind of a travelogue but it also kind of shows us what it was like to travel the glamour of uh intercontinental um or not i guess continental flight uh going from one part of the country to the other part via uh airplane uh and this is uh visiting new york city two college girls take the big apple by storm uh so here's skyline new york enjoy san remo california as nice a place to live as you'll find anywhere in the west and here are phil and laura martin waiting impatiently for their daughter sally you home from college well here she is at last and about time but not only is sally home for the summer to their surprise she's brought a guest along francis gray a college chum who lives in new york the usual fun greetings of course as anyone greets their favorite only daughter then the martins begin to wonder why sally's friend francis is stopping off in san remo before going east san remo being quite a bit out of her way but they soon find out we may as well confess we have a plan oh first i'll show franny san remo i don't want to take 20 or 30 minutes then i'll go east with her and she'll show me new york how about it that's a good even steven proposition mother your daughter's a born bargainer all the way to new york oh gosh mrs martin you make it sound like the end of the world really it's only a few hours away a few hours of course mother you can fly coast to coast in only eight hours well if it's all right with your family friend it's okay with me how about you mother well yes i suppose so oh mother and daddy you're the mostest new york here we come not so fast young lady what about reservations well it uh so happens that we well we've already reserved seats on twa real sure of yourself weren't you okay darling i'll pick them up this afternoon well after visiting with us a few days the girls were off bound for new york they were walking on air even before they got on board for sally this was the time of her young life and for francis it was a treat to have sally along [Music] i remember the first time i took that trip by air and i knew what it would mean to sally they told us all about it in postcards we received a couple of days later all about the fun they were having the thrill of being airborne by constellation on a sky-high adventure over this great land of ours wonderful sights to see way down below the grand canyon for instance one of the seven wonders of the world [Music] i could easily imagine sally's excitement at her first meal at 19 000 feet and remembering the kind of food service my guess is that both girls would have no trouble at all disposing of it a really satisfying lunch expertly prepared and tastefully served after crossing the mountains plains and rivers of this great country they were rewarded with a fine view of manhattan and the metropolis of new york even francis noted that although she'd seen it before this towering city is always an inspiring sight from the air nowhere else are there so many buildings so tall and so closely packed together finally they landed smoothly at idlewild the new york international airport [Music] kids sisters can be something of a nuisance like being met at the airport i'm fran's brother bill a one-man reception committee and there they are fresh out of the clouds a 3 000 mile hop and both look as fresh as a daisy the usual brother sister bid with fran and a good close-up look at the girlfriend from the west very nice the first thing we did was drive out home brian was anxious to see the family and to introduce sally and when i found out it was sally's first trip to the big city it didn't take long to figure out a plan for a tour of the town taking in the highlights including an item or two usually missed by most visitors [Music] for a broadside look at the city i decided on the three-hour boat ride around manhattan an absolute must for anyone visiting new york here was a chance for sally to see the famous waterfront handling huge ocean liners tug boats and barges as busy a stretch of waterway as you'll find anywhere in the world that's one of the world's best known and most beloved landmarks the statue of liberty a gift to america from the people of france it stands on a little island in the bay we're now at the tip of manhattan the battery where the original dutch settlers first landed here is castle clinton the ancient fort that is now dwarfed by towering skyscrapers scenes at the museum of the city of new york show early days i hear a stone street in 1659 and south street under the towering sails of the famous clipper ships the ships had raced from china with a harvest of tea in 1792 the city's business leaders met under a buttonwood tree to found the new york stock exchange today the exchange at wall and broad streets stands on almost the exact spot at the center of the busy financial district here where the sub-treasury building now stands is where george washington was inaugurated as first president of the united states at the head of wall street stands trinity church the first protestant episcopal parish in new york the church was given a large tract of land by queen anne and became the richest parish in the country the church yard said to be worth 25 million dollars in real estate value is the burial place of robert fulton alexander hamilton and other famous figures in american history [Music] we rounded the tip of manhattan and headed up the east river under the brooklyn bridge sally was impressed with the manhattan skyline along the east side drive given new importance by that famous international landmark the united nations building this is the headquarters of the organization comprising some 75 nations devoted to world peace along first avenue fly the flags of the member nations with more at it as new nations join this entrance come delegates of member nations from all over the world when the general assembly is in session visitors crowd the galleries to see and hear the un in action here we are inside the general assembly the most important meeting hall in the world today we round to the top of manhattan island and we're back again on the hudson river moving south under the george washington bridge this mighty bridge spans a hudson from manhattan to new jersey [Music] this is the west side drive one of the major routes carrying traffic from the bridge and the new york and new england parkways commuters and motorists form a never-ending stream into and out of the metropolis of manhattan that massive dome building is grant's tomb and nearby the beautiful riverside church the next day the girls visited the midtown area they walked up fashionable park avenue with its fine hotels and apartments modern glass-walled office buildings also lined this famous street the headquarters are some of america's greatest industries two blocks away is fabulous fifth avenue the girls are lucky to be there the day of a parade this is a mounted troop of new york's finest along fifth avenue and on lower broadway is where heroes and visiting royalty are welcomed by the admiring city as the bands play the high school drill team does its rhythm dance in the street added enjoyment for a new yorker and visitor alike fifth avenue is world renowned as the shopping center of new york it also has culture great museums in the public library now this is the nation's largest municipal library containing over three and a half million volumes the sidewalks along fifth avenue are always crowded with shoppers fran and sally did some shopping too they were just window shopping here though [Music] yes this is the tiffany's the world famous jewelry store [Music] the girls really had themselves a field day they visited practically every shop on both sides of fifth avenue but i guess shopping is one of the chief attractions when visiting any city particularly when that city happens to be new york [Music] here's an old friend from greek mythology atlas the strong man of the gods just as the book said he's carrying the world on his shoulders this is just one of the things that add character to the brick and stone of new york friend made sure that sally saw rockefeller center that city within a city they strolled through the beautiful channel garden to the sunken plaza where a golden prometheus looks over the outdoor restaurant the flags of all nations add color to the scene [Music] the restaurant was a good place to rest weary feet after their shopping tour sally was particularly impressed with what she called the uh delightful continental atmosphere no sir san remo was never like this [Music] after lunch there was no question as to what the next attraction was to be sally just had to go to the top of the famous rca building for a bird's eye view of the city this tremendous architectural masterpiece is actually a city within a city offices for thousands of workers shops theaters radio and television studios name it and it's here 70 stories above the never-ending hustle of the city below sally and fran were on a roof terrace one of the city's most famous tourist attractions one of the guides took over to point out and explain all about the highlights of mighty manhattan sprawling endlessly below from the street new york is one thing from up here well sally used one of the telescopes to get an even better look [Music] from the hudson river on the left then north to central park the patch of green country that has been maintained as a recreation area in spite of pressure from the city on all sides to the east the queensboro bridge spans the east river to queens and long island fran had lived here all her life but she had never seen this site i guess sally was showing her in new york [Music] along the east river the united nations and chrysler buildings brooklyn is in the distance with a guide explaining the highlights they completed the full circle when they saw the empire state building tallest on earth over 1400 feet above the street directly across fifth avenue from rockefeller center is saint patrick's this beautiful gothic cathedral with its soaring spires is one of more than 3 000 places of worship in new york uptown stands the cathedral of saint john the divine the second largest church in the world only saint peter's in rome is larger another of the many varied religions in new york is represented by temple emmanuel one of the most beautiful synagogues in the city [Music] mother it's all so busy seems almost like people here don't go to sleep and big there's so many things to see and to do seems more like a whole world than a city cultural you mean like libraries and museums and stuff well no not yet culture is scheduled for a little later tomorrow on book for fun with bill gray fran's brother we're starting over in coney island and working our way up towards central park he's the most yes [Music] the next day i took sally to coney island coney is probably the best known beach resort in the world oops there's a surprise a minute at coney island how we shot the works here this first ride was like flying around on a giant roulette wheel just hang on to your girl and let her go [Music] sally loved it i can't say that i wasn't happy about it either now next came the parachute jump the chutes are hoisted to the top of a high tower and then gently floats you back to earth [Music] now from a distance it doesn't look particularly exciting but just try it sometime [Music] coney island has every fun gimmick you can imagine the giant ferris wheel is one of the largest in the world [Applause] but the roller coaster is what really has you breathless from the moment they first released the car to climb to the top of the steep incline the higher you go up the faster you come down [Music] sally got a real kickout wanted to take another ride to me i was ready for something more relaxing [Music] sally thought that was a real good idea too so before we know it we're at 59th street and fifth avenue [Music] these horses and carriages i think they call them victorious look a little in congress on modern fifth avenue but that's just one of the things that makes new york the interesting place that it is [Music] what a contrast right in the very heart of this bustling metropolis you're out in the country riding along the pleasant tree-shaded drives of central park i showed sally where i used to roller skate as a kid [Music] and the fountain near the mall where we used to sail our boats [Music] sally couldn't get over this change of pace right in the middle of the world's busiest city new york changes but kids and baseball they'll always be the same [Music] a little further along a pleasant lake [Music] sally and i were going to rent a boat but we decided to visit the zoo instead new york really has several zoos this one's in central park and there's an even larger one in the bronx [Music] the apes and monkeys can always be counted on to act more human than people and the polar bears just mope around waiting for the colder weather old man giraffe the animal skyscraper feels quiet at home in this vertical city he's always a big hit with zoo visitors [Music] as are the lions in the bronx zoo they enjoy an outdoor range without bars just like the african belt there's a children's zoo too where the small fry can play around with domestic animals to their hearts content on the fifth avenue side of central park stands a metropolitan museum of art a treasury of some of the world's greatest masterpieces the met is also famous for its fine collections of armor sculpture historic costumes and egyptian antiquities for those leaning more toward the modern in art well new york has that too and the sculpture garden at the museum of modern art is a good place to find some very interesting pieces and some that are well controversial [Music] we all agreed that we'd like to see a good show so sally and i took fran to the famous radio city music hall this is another superlative the largest theater in the world and the rockettes put on a dancing performance unique in the world of the theater when i mentioned baseball sally said sure she'd just love to see one of those big league games so before she could change her mind we slipped up to the yankee stadium to see the yanks take on one of their american league rivals i explained to her of course that new york also has two other teams the giants and the brooklyn badgers [Music] in the fall king football takes over at the stadium the polo grounds and on nearby college gridirons you can see top flight professional and college football every week during the season [Applause] then we went to belmont park i didn't have to explain the rules of this game decided she had her form sheet out and had picked a winner before i could get to the ticket the horse i picked looked like this slow motion shot of a steeplechase race in the winter they're skating at the outdoor restaurant of radio city for indoors the winter sports fans flocked to madison square garden for some big league hockey the fastest game in the world this is real rough sport another popular sport is boxing new york has put on more than its share of championship fights [Applause] finally i took sally down to the bright lights of times square here is something you can see nowhere else on the earth a million flashing lights in the center of the glamorous theatrical district here is a sign maker's art to the instagram beckoning you to see a show eat a candy bar or travel to glamorous places [Music] we were out on the town so we took in the entertainment for which new york is so famous we dined and danced big brassy nightclubs little side street spots swing music and hot new york has them all [Applause] music in many temples is the heartbeat of this city that never sleeps then the shortest month on record came to an end and we all drove sally to the airport for a flight back home [Applause] twa announces the departure of light 912 paris rome and cairo all aboard please dad told sally she'd really have some explaining to do if she got on that plane by mistake but sally told dad not to worry she and fran are already planning on that trip for next year frankly i for one certainly hated to see sally go all of us had come to like her very much and i think she was a little sad to end her visit too while we watched sally's plane taxi out from the terminal at international airport fran was already planning her flight back to college i got to thinking i might like to go west for a little while myself [Music] sally wrote us the very next day telling how much she'd enjoyed being here with us seeing new york for the first time she told how she felt when she looked down on the statue of liberty as she flew west over lower manhattan in the harbor that was her last glimpse of the magnificent skyline of manhattan and as far as sally was concerned one of the real exciting wonders of the world as her flight continued westward she leaned back and thought again of the many wonderful things she'd seen brooklyn bridge the cloud-piercing skyscrapers the soaring towers of rockefeller center the impressive united nations building the millions of glittering lights of times square sally knew she'd be back again soon on another flight over the fabulous skyline of new york [Music] so uh the first thing that i mean footage is beautiful the capture is really that kind of time and place of tourist um manhattan um and also what it was like to fly i mean really just the whole idea everybody dressed up and the quality of the food and that people are not shadow being escorted in a uh greyhound bus in the sky um and the last big travel i did was actually in new york city i did a home movie day in manhattan the february before pandemic kind of kicked in and um so got to go to did something at moma got to walk around central park uh got to walk past radio city music hall just really kind of got to enjoy that part of the city um so i got to go back at some point and because this is pre-recorded i might be back i might be in new york city although i doubt it i don't really have plans coming up for doing that so uh let's see what can we leave you with i'll leave you with uh this short um thing from aaa enjoy [Music] [Music] [Music] sometimes the best way to keep from getting hurt in the school bus is to get out of the bus this can happen if the bus stalls in a dangerous spot like on a railroad track or in heavy traffic [Music] or if there's danger of a fire to be able to get out of the bus in case of a real emergency you have to practice by doing what's called a school bus evacuation drill practicing you learn how to stay calm school the fastest way to get out of a bus quickly is to walk quietly so you can hear instructions your turn now your turn the person in charge is always the school bus driver he or she decides which is the safest way to get out of the bus there are three common choices front door exit a rear door exit and a combination of front and rear doors at the same time here's how to practice using the front door exit okay we're going to do an emergency evacuation drill using the front door evacuations through the front door call for a helper helper if you would stand by the front door and assist anybody coming out and a leader leader if you would form a single file line and take the students to the bush over there by the school usually two of the older students on the bus okay your turn all right next the driver releases the students one seat at a time and instructs them to follow the leader he starts at the front of the bus and works his way toward the rear he lets one side of the aisle go and then the other another seat don't walk okay here you shouldn't try to take your lunch or jacket or books with you leave them on the seat okay after the last draw is gone the driver double checks to make sure everybody is out of the bus with practice you should be able to do a drill like this without the driver in a real emergency he may not be able to help sometimes it may be necessary to evacuate a school bus through the rear emergency exit evacuation grill out the back door and because of an accident or fire at the front of the bus your the rear door drill calls for two helpers in a leader emergency door and take your positions in the rear door drill the driver stays next to the exit to prevent pushing or shoving single file to the flagpole now we'll leave the bus one row at a time again leave your seats one row at a time starting at the back of the bus first one side of the aisle then the other it's a long way to the ground from the rear door of a school bus you should crouch in the doorway so you don't bump your head watch your hand and place your hands on the shoulders of the helpers the helpers stand facing each other one on each side of the door land on the balls of your feet and bend your knees watch your head and your head then follow the leader to a safe place away from the bus the quickest way to evacuate a school bus is through both the front and rear doors at the same time but it takes more practice okay we're going to have an emergency evacuation drill using both the front door and the rear door this drill the bus is divided in half some schools mark their buses with the lines everyone forward the line will use the front exit everyone back of here will use the rear exit helper if you'll stand by the door and assist students coming out later helpers and leaders are needed at each door for this drill by the building students in front if you'll follow the leader as soon as the students in the front half of the bus have started the driver moves to the rear door if you'll open the emergency door and get on the ground get ready to assist anybody later if you'll form a single file line take the students over the flagpole you know crouch down as you go out the door the back half of the bus evacuates the same as in the rear door drill hey crouch down after the last student is left the driver walks back to the front of the bus to make sure that everybody is out all right um having ridden in a school bus most of my uh school life um it was only i think until it was a junior in high school but i wrote it all the time i think we only did like two of those drills ever in the 10 years that i was riding the school bus um anyways uh thanks for tuning in today um we'll be back on the next uh work weekday at one o'clock um i'm not sure if i will be back or if it will be another pre-recorded show i'm
