hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the evie geese lunchtime streaming show filmed the night before as i am traveling to help my parents downsize to what we all have to do so i am helping them get ready for a yard sale that's what the good son does um but anyways i still wanted to kind of show you stuff and so please comment and you know have a good time and i'll monitor probably later um but uh yeah uh so it's we're starting kind of right at one um and uh this first film we're gonna watch is uh from the moody institute of science features my uh favorite scientist quote unquote uh dr erwin moon who was a doctor of religion not of any type of science and this is uh talking about the mysteries of time and this really shows off what moody was good at and what dr moon was good at which is he loved uh doing time lapse photography he loved doing um like close-up macro photography and you know that was really what sets these films apart from a lot of science films of the time is that he was really getting all these amazing shots that other people weren't getting he was also giving us a fine dose of the gospel so um here's a mystery of time [Music] [Music] hello there welcome to moody institute of science say do you like mystery stories well we have one for you in the tradition of all good mysteries it's complete with a haunted house and ghosts out of the past a science lab seems a strange place to look for ghosts doesn't it our story is true before we're finished i think you'll agree that truth is stranger than the strangest fiction the mystery is time the haunted house is space in our true story the ghosts travel at the speed of light and if they come straight out of the past your past yes time is a mysterious thing have you ever tried to define time the harder you search for a definition the more elusive it becomes we're going to explore the mystery of time and the laboratory before we find the ghosts we'll have to sort through some facts but we'll find them for they're very real hello pete how are things going why mr moon we're about ready to roll on a high speed shot oh that's great mr margosian is one of our skill technicians here at woody institute of science in addition to a rich background of photographic experience he's shown a more than usual interest in the subject of time pete you suppose you could tell us just a bit about the equipment that you use i'd be glad to most important piece of equipment is right here it's a super high speed camera i like to call it a time microscope it does the time what the microscope does to physical dimension it enlarges a period of time instead of a bit of matter how fast will the camera be running on this take to about 3 000 frames per second ah let's see that'll stretch one second into about two minutes won't it yes two minutes and five seconds to be exact and this will give us an opportunity to observe some interesting properties in liquids we're using milk in this experiment because it photographs easily i'll adjust the flow until it appears a fine trickle to the eye there would you start the camera doctor now ready [Music] the trickle of milk and the splash look quite different now don't they but they aren't any different the liquid is behaving in its usual manner we've merely changed our time reference [Music] my [Music] did you ever drop a steel ball into a bowl of milk there's probably no good reason why you should have but it does make an interesting high-speed study watch the high-speed camera checks the fall and the steel ball seems to float slowly downward to disappear beneath the surface of the liquid then when you've almost forgotten about it the ball slowly bounces back don't be confused now this isn't one of the ghosts we were talking about it's just the milk that follows the ball into the air [Music] never question what appears to be normal as one sure way of staying locked up in your time compartment to study time we must venture beyond the ordinary and when we do it opens up a whole new realm pete would you help me with an experiment sure just take the egg and stand right over there that's fine now will you balance the egg on your head please hey wait a minute if you have in mind what i think you do no thanks but i'll be happy to set it up over here for you well maybe that would be safer pete you know if william tell had been in the chicken business instead of the apple business the story might have gone something like this of course the flight of that era required but a tiny fraction of a second but the high-speed camera slowed it down until we could study the entire action [Music] recently at the university of california at los angeles a high-speed camera study was made of that split second involved in a head-on autocrate that's what happens when we crack up at only 28 miles an hour not many of us keep it down to that anymore do we it's a bit disconcerting to realize that just a fleeting moment of this stuff we call time can introduce you to a whole eternity the high-speed camera tells us part of the story of time but strangely enough the time compressor will show us even more the time lapse camera or the time compressor is just the opposite of a high-speed camera instead of slowing things down it speeds them up the world about us is alive with action and movement that we miss because it's too slow there's a variable symphony of movement that we never see because we're locked up in our own little time compartment the time compressor can help us break out of our time prison here's a good example of movement that we can't see let's set the clock now for 11 o'clock right the clock is running the hands are moving all the time you can't see them move or if you watched long enough you could tell if they had moved but you can't see the movement that is not unless we use the time compressor did it seem to you that the hands of the clock speeded up and slowed down well actually they didn't change speed at all the clock kept right on running at standard clock speed you've been watching it for a whole day now we just changed your time reference by changing the interval like this every time the lights go on the camera takes one picture if you're still not convinced about that clock maybe this will help that isn't the magician's rose the flower right out of the garden this time you watch the clock and the rose we are now taking pictures at a 10 minute interval of course we're projecting them at standard sound speed this means that we are compressing 72 hours into just 18 seconds yes this is a real rose and these are real whiskers too you see i haven't shaved since you started to watch that rosebud open three days and nights ago gives you something to think about doesn't it this is a three foot length of standard 16 millimeter motion picture film on it there are 120 separate pictures this three feet of film could go through the high speed camera oh i shaved while you were looking at the close-up of the film you see we used the time-lapse camera to take the close-up so there was plenty of time this three feet of film could go through the high-speed camera in a thousandth of a second the same length of film in the time lapse camera could take days months or even years to expose according to the interval that we used between exposures i suppose that we could call a piece of film like this a memory with a variable time reference say would you like to take a nice two-day vacation all right sit back relax and enjoy [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] uh [Music] [Music] [Music] a number of years ago in germany a man gave to the world a new concept it shook the scientific world from top to bottom changed the course of human history and gave us the atomic age the man albert einstein the concept relativity that strange fantastic relationship between time distance and mass now an important part of that concept can be expressed in a simple equation e equals m c squared energy equals mass times the speed of light squared the equivalence of mass and energy the basic formula that unlock the secrets of the atom but equally if not more important is that relationship between time and space well we can't speak of the equivalence of time and space they're not exactly equal but we can say that they are relative or they are all bound up together just obtuse there you say well maybe so but every day there is new concrete evidence to prove it true when dr eo lawrence and his associates at the university of california designed the 184 inch cyclotron they didn't laugh at this theory they accepted it as true and it's a good thing they did in the cyclotron tiny particles are accelerated in magnetic and electrical fields until they approach the speed of light this rotary condenser at the side of the cyclotron compensates for the increased mass of the particles which occurred exactly as einstein had predicted it would let's suppose that at some day in the buck rogers future you decide to take a trip to a planet satellite of the star sirius as long as we're supposing let's say that your atom powered rocket ship is capable of traveling at 99 and 99 million 999 thousand nine hundred and ninety nine one hundred millionth percent of the speed of light of course this is very close to a hundred and eighty six thousand two hundred and eighty four miles a second in view of the fact that sirius is nine light years from the earth it would take just a little over 18 years to make the round trip naturally you plan to take a large supply of food but all you'd need would be a sack lunch traveling at this speed not only would your watch slow down by a factor of seventy thousand but your heart respiration digestion appetite all would slow down in the same ratio you could leave the earth some morning right after breakfast by the time you got to sirius you'd be ready for a sandwich and when you got back to the earth you'd be just hungry enough for a good dinner but then would come the surprise you'd find that while you were only one day older physically your children would all be grown up and through college and all your friends would be 18 years older than when you left them just 12 hours ago by your watch a concept such as this is almost impossible for the human mind to grasp it's so far beyond our normal experience but maybe this will help first of all listen to my heart now let me start the clock so that you can become accustomed to the rhythm of it the yardstick it looks normal doesn't it but if we could accelerate this room and everything in it to the speed of light 186 284 miles a second time would stand still my heart would stop beating and i wouldn't die the clock would cease to run and everything would squeeze into a line infinitely thin now we can't speed the room up to the speed of light of course but with the magic of some very special photography we can show you exactly what would happen if we could speed up the room to 90 percent of the speed of light 167 000 miles per second are you ready all right there's our speedometer and we're going to travel in that direction you notice what's happening my voice is not or let's go back to normal now this time we're going to accelerate vertically instead of horizontally [Music] inches when we bring it to the horizon when the room was accelerated everything seemed normal to me my voice sounded the same the rhythm of the clock remained constant the yardstick seemed the same in both directions that's because i was accelerated along with the room but you as a stationary observer were aware of the changes of course the visual effects which you noticed were achieved in this case by the use of a panavision lens a variable aspect ratio lens but the effect was exactly the same as if the room had actually been accelerated to 90 percent of the speed of light these are called relativistic effects they are based on mathematical formulas that are as common in the work a day world of the nuclear physicist as two times two equals four is in our world fantastic as they may seem these are the formulas that gave us this [Music] [Music] as the knowledge we've been discussing created a frankenstein monster which is about to destroy us as science somehow become an evil thing no true science is a body of fact and uh facts are not of themselves immoral they become good or bad merely the use to which we put them the discovery of nuclear energy has brought the potential of enormous benefit to mankind the same time it's given man the ability to destroy himself to wipe out civilization now which will it be well frankly i don't know but this i know the very formulas and facts which gave man the ability to blast himself into eternity these very facts contain powerful moral and spiritual implications which just might keep him from doing it we've considered some weird and fantastic things but the implications to which we have just referred are the strangest and the most fantastic of all once again they involve this relationship between time and space would you like to see with your own eyes a million years into the past and see it in the present as though right now well you can tonight take a little drive out into the country away from the city lights if the night is clear and if your eyesight is good you will be able to see in the constellation of andromeda a faint hazy object it's called the andromeda nebula it's actually another universe another galactic system over a million light years out in space while you're looking remember this the light reaching your eye tonight left that distant universe over a million years ago and it has been traveling like a wailing banshee through space ever since you're looking more than a million years into the past and seeing it as now where the nebula and andromeda is or how it looks right now we can't know for sure for all we know it may not even exist all we can know is how it looked over a million years ago now of course it isn't necessary to go this far into space to encounter the same principle every day as you look up at the sun you're looking eight and a quarter minutes into the past for the sun is eight and a quarter light minutes away from the earth also at night when you look up at antares you're seeing 250 years ago just as though it were right now from time to time the newspapers report the discovery of a nova or a supernova a star that bursts into flame like a giant hydrogen bomb any astronomer knows that what we see as now actually happened hundreds or even thousands of years ago all of this is illustration of the fact that time and space are linked together but what does this have to do with morality well in the world today wherever man accepts the concept of a supreme being or creator of the universe there are at least three points of general agreement first that god is omnipotent that is he is all-powerful well he'd have to be to create the universe then he is omniscient that is he is all-knowing and he is omnipresent that is he is present or existent everywhere at once do you realize what this means if time and space are inseparably linked together then a god who is not limited in space cannot be limited by time if to him every point in space is here then every moment of time is now let's think for a moment about what this means let's say that you were not limited in space if you were on the star rigel looking back to the earth joan of arc would just now be rallying the people of france on battlegrounds john bunyan would be writing pilgrims progress and on the star canopus the gallant 600 would be charging half a league happily happily gone worth and if you were on the star series you could see what you were doing nine years ago because you're still doing it gives you something to think about doesn't it you know it's an important thing for us to recognize the possibility that every act good or bad lives on and on that we are forever accountable for our actions but responsibility is the stuff of which character is made and accepting a full measure of responsibility is the highest challenge before any young person today [Music] so dr moon you had me with the whole relativity thing but the at the end about uh god's omniscience it yeah i've seen this many times excuse me and uh it's a head scratcher i'm like what i i don't think that's right but i don't know anyways um really you can see how playful he is the whole thing about him you know needing to shave and then suddenly he's shaving and then he says like what happened like he's like well you while you're looking at that frame i went and shaved myself but i had plenty of time to do it um really quite something and the fact is that also that these uh a lot of these are actually shortened from longer films that were shown in churches and he used to do this thing called sermons from science where he would do things about science talk about science and then he would talk about the gospel and he would tour around the churches and do it and he actually did it at a pavilion at the world's fair and uh so it got people who are interested in science to it was the hook was the science to get him to talk about the gospel when after sputnik launched there was a bunch of money that was being funneled in for math and science in uh schools part of the national defense education act and so moody institute of science basically edited those down into these shorter films um and kind of didn't talk about the gospels as much but they certainly talked about god still because they were like well you know uh jews catholics and protestants all believe in god so we can talk about god just not just the specifics of you know what we talk about at the moody bible institute which is bible thumping uh protestantism um and they felt like they could get away with it and they did for a while but at some point they started getting pulled from schools because people are like now you're now you're mentioning god in weird ways and we can't really allow that in schools so um next one we have is australian and um it's called new no laws today and it's basically what happens when there's no laws and it's kind of like the purge but it's funny and slapstick so here's no laws today [Music] [Applause] [Music] good evening tonight the government has announced a new scheme to be known as lawless days claiming that there are too many laws and rules at present a government spokesman said if there were no laws at all perhaps society's problems would disappear the first lawless day will be tomorrow there will be no laws from 8 o'clock tomorrow morning until 8 o'clock tomorrow evening hell by granted lawless stuff a lot of nonsense won't affect us honorable member reaction to uh labor uh opposition on tv these days i don't know why they don't repeat the walton so you're right come on [Music] hey what's he doing there excuse me i'm trying to get out of here uh hold on mate that's been another half hour or so this is my driveway somebody else parked over mine but don't you know it's against the law to park over people's driveways don't you read the newspapers mate no laws today so what you're trying to say is you're not going to move your car right you got it mate well i see well if it's not against the this bottle's nearly empty and it says it's supposed to have 750 molds well it has look at that that is what i call 750 mils i mean my rules for weights and measures are as good as anybody else's yeah well look at the prices you can't charge 345.95 for a little drop of vomika i'll tell you what mrs i've got the best prices for vinegar in town today if i were you i'd take a couple [Music] [Music] a few groceries if you can't afford it all at the moment perhaps you'd like to put something back i absolutely refuse to pay such ridiculous prices pay up or get out all right take that is one dollar no but forty four thousand isn't it what school did you go to if that's 750 ml that is 44 000. this says 750 bills this says one dollar oh no no no no no we're not going by that number there anymore we're going by that one there and that saves 55 695 which means that you owe me 10 000 change that's the serial number pay that was enough forward ah clean your glasses [Applause] shut up shut up now i'm the referee here and what i say goes peal well there's no laws today so even if it was a forward pass it doesn't matter all right then in that case you don't need me do you [Music] i'm not giving new zealand's first lawless day has apparently sparked off 12 hours of unprecedented chaos around the country our cameras were out to record the events three children were killed and another 17 injured in an accident in the city when a red station wagon failed to stop at the intersection of high street and main street a bus full of school children swerved to avoid the vehicle and overturned a number of cases of food poisoning were reported after meat was sold from a supermarket where animals especially dogs had been wandering and reportedly taking meat from the shop fridge the contaminated meat was returned to the fridge and sold unwittingly meanwhile health department officials were busy this evening trying to rid city streets of a large population of rats the rats were attracted by rubbish and litter if not brought under control soon the health department says there could be outbreaks of leptospirosis a disease which causes meningitis and kidney failure and can be fatal 30 rugby players and a small group of picnickers were today treated at the public hospital as a result of a friendly rugby game in which the rules were ignored most of the injured were treated and discharged there have been reports today of shopkeepers charging very high prices in one case a hundred dollars was charged for a bottle of milk which was only half full with property laws all sign enforced there were many reported thefts it is understood that shoplifting occurred in response to anger at the high prices charged in one of the most daring escapades a woman shopper stole an entire cash register from a supermarket this afternoon at a special news conference the prime minister was asked the question what would be wrong with having a lawless day every day if people want to go around being nasty to each other isn't that their business his answer to that question was huh [Music] hmm [Music] new zealand new zealand new zealand sorry not australia new zealand um i always forget that i love that film it's great and so it's slap sticky and then at the end they kind of say like and a bunch of kids died and all these people got sick um really quite quite a great film um this next film we're going to watch is [Music] made by walter j klein films which was based in charlotte north carolina which is about three hours from here and actually fairly close to where i'm going to be um or where i'm i'm going to be when you watch this um anyways this is a another bus safety film it's we're all in the driver's seat and this one has an awesome countdown which is i think they were trying to alert projectionists unqualified projectionists uh about what to look for before they start the film to try to eliminate the damage and to make the viewing experience better um so here's we're all in the driver's seat 19 18 stop now if the numbers and sounds aren't together stop now if the projectionist is inexperienced stop now if you fail to clean the projector stop now if the film is chattering stop now if the picture is smeared 3. i remember always staying up too late and getting up too early and even if i were late for school mom made me finish breakfast every bit of it i remember hearing the school bus blowing its nose over and over again everybody had to know that i was nine minutes late again i remember there's two doors reaching out to grab me up i had to make the bus i had to run the entire driveway with an arm full of falling books and a stomach full of scrambled eggs i remember walter kale's foot waiting just for me each and every morning what a jerk [Music] i remember mary lou mary louise mary louise culpepper always saving me that one dreaded seat she was the only one to finish her homework the night before [Music] i remember our driver mr allison and those kind words of wisdom he gave us freely every morning all right i want you all to sit down and be quiet i'm going to put you already apart [Music] i remember intently meditating the rest of the way to school trust makes one sleep to meditate deeply and i trusted that the ride would not only be punctual but also safe the school bus was a world unto itself carrying a noisy cargo of characters comfortably and carefully to its daily destination and much to my dismay i remember never being late for school no matter how hard i tried funny i don't remember i don't remember ever thinking about why the school bus was safe like lunch lines and library fines i figured it just sort of came with a territory but that's typical of a child's point of view after all someone's got to drive the bus safely someone's got to keep a safe bus running smoothly and someone's got to build a safe bus to begin with i remember thinking about all of this constantly now that i have school age children of my own i remember coming to the conclusion that it wasn't someone's job when it comes to transporting our children on some of the world's most congested streets and highways it's everyone's responsibility we're all in the driver's seat [Music] even years after we finish school we never finish our schooling since i always took school bus safety for granted i had to do a little homework to uncover the facts fact school buses are the safest mode of mass transport on the ground today each and every day american school bus drivers transport children the equivalent of 34 round trips to the moon safely try to imagine an astronaut attempting to show first 60 screaming students past potholes through intersections and over soft shoulders without incident then you remember your friendly school bus driver [Music] fact though more than 50 000 americans lose their lives every year in our streets and highways less than four hundredths of one percent of those are in school buses why is it so much safer to ride a school bus than an ordinary car remember how the school bus is built in 1966 the national traffic and motor vehicle safety act was created to assure us all that critical safety standards would be maintained in school buses standards controlling tires wheels accelerator control systems emergency warning devices interior impact protection brake and lighting systems emergency exits structural guidelines window releases fuel system integrity driver restraints passenger seating compartmentalization the list goes on i remember feeling safer riding in a school bus than riding in the family car fact all school buses are not created equal some have been tested more and made safer than others they've been created under standards that go far beyond those set by the national traffic and motor vehicle safety act [Music] i remember my sixth grade science teacher mr angstrom when i told him i'd like to be an engineer have you considered art [Music] i never did but i learned to read and re-read a technical explanation until i fully understood it for instance these safer buses have an enclosed steel floor frame one-piece roll bars throughout the bust that extend below the floor rather than being attached to the top surface of the floor this transmits any shock that hits the bus away from the children so all of this steel is between the passenger and any exterior danger such as a collision there are also crash rails that go the full length of the roof and a bumper that wraps all the way around the chassis frame front and rear the children are literally sitting above the impact zone now if you don't grasp what all this means at first you might go into art but i finally got the message all of these features create sort of a circle of safety around the children in case of collision or roll over [Music] then there are those special features that help make these buses extra safe there are external guard rails along the sides all steel that add integral structural strength an additional skirt frame to add even more floor protection you know it begins to remind me of an armored personnel carrier [Music] there's a reason for these extra safety precautions because the manufacturer like everyone else has a son or a daughter or niece or nephew or grandson or granddaughter or cousin or friend riding a school bus everyone but everyone is in the driver's seat sharing the responsibility for the safety of our children fact as safe as our buses are built they are just machines where safety is concerned people are the deciding factor people like the school board are in the driver's seat even with educational funds and short supply they must budget the most safety for the dollar it's the school board that must make a long-term investment in the life of a child and the life of a bus people like transportation supervisors are in the driver's seat it's their responsibility to recommend the best the safest bus for the money the supervisors also must face the tasks of planning the most efficient and safest routing as well as employing competent bus drivers people like the business managers are in the driver's seat making sure all shop and maintenance facilities for the buses are well stocked people like the school bus mechanics are in the driver's seat keeping the buses running as smoothly and as safely as the manufacturer intended people like the driver trainers who spend countless hours drilling in safety procedures for every possible contingency people like the school bus drivers who must deliver their precious cargo intact and on time safely and securely each and every morning and afternoon people like the school bus manufacturers who must design and produce the safest bus possible that'll last the longest period of years for the fewest dollars people like the inspectors who must check every new bus for specifications compliance then recheck all possible points of wear on existing buses making sure they're still safe for operation people like the parents are in the driver's seat instructing their children in the proper conduct while boarding exiting and riding a school bus people like john q motorist who must constantly be on the lookout for children walking to and from the school bus and most of all it's people like the children who must take responsibility for their own safety the children must learn to board ride and exit a school bus safely no one person no one bus can guarantee a completely safe ride it's a team effort school bus safety is no accident [Music] i remember my weekly lunch allowance and i'd be so proud on friday that i've been able to save a few cents here and there through prudent money management and not eating pennywise dollar stupid good were a few extra dimes if i was too sick to enjoy them i remember my first school board meeting my heart went out to my fellow parents as hard as they tried they couldn't avoid the inevitable cutbacks had to be made somewhere and somehow the school bus my whole friend was always the prime target no one could fault the logic of a well-intentioned school board if we could avoid buying new buses by keeping the old ones running just a little bit longer the savings would be unbelievable and that's just what they were not believable it's a lot like saving a few cents and not eating we saved by scrimping on the initial investment and then spent the savings on maintenance for all buses more fuel costs for the old buses more insurance for more buses more drivers for more buses more salaries and benefits for more drivers old buses equal more buses as simple as 6th grade arithmetic state-of-the-art buses now can possibly carry up to 90 children per bus instead of the usual 66 passenger load fewer buses to carry the same number of children think of it this way since the new buses carry 20 to 25 percent more people that's 20 to 25 percent fewer buses now that's a believable savings and where those savings go easy all that money can go to safety more money for drivers training more money for unsafe bus replacement more money for any additional safety features you'd like to add and remember that the new buses are safer than ever before coach type buses are more maneuverable and dangerous situations than the traditional bus there's a shorter turning radius and don't forget that the coach bus puts the kids well above the impact zone there are options that add even more safety such as low radius mirrors that work like christmas tree balls enabling the driver to see children wherever they are in front of the bus get out of the area immediately and pa systems inside and out to call on emergency warnings [Music] i remember how happy i was to go driving off with grandma every weekend i remember how much i enjoyed my older brother's first week of murdering and most of all i remember and i'll never forget that quiet smile my father wore whenever i reached the school bus a smile i never really understood until now [Music] that was um and like almost all uh walter j klein films it's sponsored by somebody it's a sponsored film and basically an ad uh for thomas built buses thomas uh was based there was one of them that was based in high point north carolina which is not that far from charlotte and um [Music] so this is an interesting film because it's a bus safety film made for adults specifically adults that are maybe voting on bond issues school bond issues and voting on spending money for new school buses uh so this is very much an ad for new um new school buses and why it's important to not maintain the old ones um and it's so in the style of i think it's like kind of a riff on the gene shepard short stories of which one of them was christmas story where you know you have this adult narrator remembering his childhood and narrating as an adult about what's happening as a child it has that vibe i could be wrong but uh that's what it kind of feels like um anyways yeah so walter j klein north carolina film company uh doing ads for north carolina uh bus school buses um pretty interesting all right so um we're running we're almost we're at an hour but i'll we'll watch one more film but uh just let me say uh thanks for tuning in i'm not there um i'm somewhere else actually um close to where walter j
