oh geez i thought i heard you come in i didn't think you'd be up this late i wouldn't have except your mother got me trapped in the late show don't you believe him you know your father in the western do you have a good time oh wonderful good well i think i'm gonna hit the haze dad i um i've got something to tell you and mother oh what is it dude well uh well pete and i we uh well he proposed to me tonight and i said yes uh you and uh pete want to get married i had no idea there was anything serious i didn't tell you before because i wasn't sure myself but i know for sure now that we do love each other well i have to admit that uh pete is a fine boy oh yes he certainly is but he's not a catholic is that it well we want you to be happy look i know you're going that i ought to marry a catholic but pete is very considerate very understanding we have so much in common i just know that our marriage is going to work out wonderfully oh dear it's true that sometimes protestant and catholic marriages do seem to work out as you put it but there are so many things to be taken into consideration mother don't you think i've thought about those things but we're in love now that's most important isn't it well honey i i think you ought to talk this over with father manning yes just to make sure you really understand what's involved i intend to but i'm sure that nothing father manning could say would change the way i feel about pete hi pete hey you're just in time how about joining us no thanks sis what's the matter you sick never felt better we just got home from the young married couple's party at the church how was your date it was wonderful i asked jane to marry me marry you you're kidding well what's wrong about that well nothing peter i think it's wonderful sure jane's a swell girl but i didn't realize you were that serious it's quite simple we're in love we want to get married jane said yes she's all for it so just as soon as she breaks the news to her folks what'll they say about her marrying a protestant they're reasonable people they know we'll work it out somehow i don't think it's good oh look don't tell me i'm going to start getting objections from you well it's your life pete and i mean it when i say i like jane she's a wonderful person but she's a roman catholic is that what you're really trying to say pete as your brother-in-law this is uh this isn't my affair whatever you want to do that's that's up to you but one of the reasons that betty and i have been so happy is that we've been able to share the things matter most we have nothing against jane but well you're a protestant what'll mom and dad say i don't know sis i'm gonna get a letter off to them right away haven't you ever told them about jane of course perhaps not about our being serious but i'm sure they'll understand after all jane and i worship the same god that's not the point well what is no matter how much you and jane love each other you'd never really become one spiritually there'd always be a barrier you know how much our church means to us our beliefs the way we worship the things we do together jane and i realize this isn't the ideal setup look at all the people who have opposite convictions about lots of things and are still happily married all it takes is some intelligence and a little mutual understanding well thanks thanks anyway for the advice i end of the world or something i think by now they can see that we've worked it out all right though right honey i think so uh um the visitor's bell afraid so when will you be going home not for another day it'll take me at least that long to wash all the dirty dishes and the doctor says i can go home day after tomorrow you come on over we will nice seeing you dear thank you for coming thanks saw evelyn and dave and the baby oh i bet the baby's cute simply adorable how's everyone she's very happy i'm glad she's such a nice girl well i guess i better be going pete if you don't mind i'd like to say something yes well i think you know that both jane's father and i like you personally very much but we are rather concerned about jane marrying a protestant well there would have to be a lot of adjustments we know that mrs sullivan and you understand that there would be many things that jane is a catholic wouldn't be able to share with you i suppose so well just as there would be many things that you as a protestant wouldn't be able to share with jane mother pete and i have gone into all this many times but what i'm leading up to is that i think it's very important that pete discuss this with father manning to fully understand what's necessary if you marry each other well of course there'd be no problem pete if you'd agree to become a catholic i've been a protestant all my life [Music] but i will talk to father manning he's very nice pete you'll like him i've known the sullivans for many years i don't blame you for falling in love with jane she's a wonderful girl there's no argument there [Music] and i wish that i could tell you to go ahead and get married and everything will be fine but speaking quite frankly there are a number of things that both of you must face that's why i'm here first of all assuming that you intend to remain a protestant you'd have to agree to certain conditions before you could be married in the church so jaina said did she explain these conditions to you well in a general way i understand our children might have to be raised as catholics yes they would that would be a prime obligation here's a copy of the pre-marriage agreement that you'd have to sign your children would have to be baptized and educated in the roman catholic faith you see pete even with this agreement our church believes that mixed marriages are not good we believe that marriage if it is to be as god intended should be a complete union physical and spiritual and in the case of a mixed marriage we hope that the non-catholic partner will be converted as a matter of fact that's one of the requirements that jane will have to agree to she must do everything in her power to bring you to her faith and you of course will have to take a course of instructions that sounds reasonable enough i'd like to know more about what jane believes i'm glad to hear you say that and i'd like her to know more about my church she could attend a pastor's class with me well i'm sorry pete but under our rules that'd be impossible well what would happen if all of jane and i didn't sign this well jane could not be married in the church and the marriage would not be recognized but if we were married by my pastor or a a justice of peace it would be legal wouldn't it no not in the eyes of our church and if jane took part in such a marriage she'd be considered by us to be living in a state of sin now pete i don't mean to be harsh that's a very serious step that you and jane are considering at best the mixed marriage is a dangerous thing that's why we try to safeguard it by insisting that the catholic partners faith be maintained i see what you mean [Music] i'll give you some literature to take home and study may god guide you and jane making a wise decision [Music] [Laughter] i'll say one thing for this literature father manning gave me it lays it right on the line i don't know maybe it's a good idea to put everything down in black and white before marriage that way both parties know exactly where they stand that's just it where would you stand what do you mean if two people getting married have to sign an agreement as to what they can't share especially about such a personal thing as their spiritual life isn't that just building a wall between them even before they get married it depends i think it's how you live and let live i think it's much more than that couples in love usually want to go to church together it's an important part of the experience of being married sis i'm sure they're going to be plenty of other things we can share together do you realize that jane could never attend a service with you in your church why well it's one of the rules of her church and if your children are raised as catholics they could never attend a service with you in your church we'd have each other that's the main thing but you wouldn't have each other not all of each other okay so families ought to go to church together oh it's more than just going to church together there'd be so many many things that you wouldn't be able to share together like grace at meal times and and family prayers with your children having the same church friends i can tell you from my own experience that our marriage is complete because craig and i share the same faith in christ sis i know there's a lot in what you say but it please pete for yours and jane's sake go see the pastor okay all right i know it's not gonna make any [Music] difference i know how you feel just out of college with all the uncertainties and challenges ahead become an old very fine girl and you're in love that seems to be the most important thing in the world right pete i i've known you since you started high school and i'd like to see you do the thing that's best for you i'm sure you realize that marriage is a very serious step of course i do but i can't see that it's as complicated as some people make it out to be well that depends there can be many complications in in a mixed marriage basically it's like any other marriage from it will come love companionship a home and children now let's analyze these things in terms of what you would get from a mixed marriage i think you'll agree that love is not only physical it's mental and spiritual too and if your married partner does not share your own faith then she cannot completely share the spiritual aspect of love therefore you both would be missing something important as a companionship in a home here again in a mixed marriage partners can never really enjoy complete companionship or a united home life pastor i know but it it just doesn't seem that important both jane and i are reasonable people we respect each other's differences and our marriage would be built on mutual respect pete how many times have i heard a fine young person like yourself contemplating a mixed marriage state these same convictions and how many times i've seen their homes break up but jane and i are different but the facts remain the same statistics show that mixed marriages have more than twice as many separations and divorces as families with the same religious faith well there's always a chance that jane may see things as i do religiously it would be your obligation pete to try to bring about her conversion just the same as it would be her obligation to try to convert you to roman catholicism and i still think jane and i can work things out all right let's discuss this from another aspect children i know what you're going to say about my having to agree to let them be raised in the roman catholic church i can go further than that pete what about raising a family planning on how many children you'll have what do you mean well truly responsible parenthood intelligent planning for children might be impossible i hadn't realized that another thing one of a parent's most solemn responsibilities to a child is to give that child the best spiritual heritage that he or she knows as a protestant it's your duty to rear your children in your faith as a catholic it's jane's duty to bring up the children in her church it goes without saying this can lead to discord but worse than that it could lead to both of you giving up your church life and rearing your children with no faith [Music] yes oh hello tried to honey you just a little while ago i was talking to evelyn she wants us to it i guess but dave and i we've never discussed such things very much well it's a holy covenant dating back to the days of abraham and your husband would like now to keep that tradition with his son i back later thanks rabbi before i leave i'd like to point out that because you are of different faiths you face new problems as parents that can be solved only by mutual love and understanding mrs levine listen to david consider carefully what his faith means to him in this matter of the bris and david you must be understanding with your wife call me when you'd like me to come back i'm anxious to help in any way i can goodbye rabbit i'm sorry i meant to talk it over with you honey i don't want this kind of a ceremony honey after all he's my son too what do you want me to do forget i'm a jew can't my parents wouldn't understand what about my parents it's taken us all this time to get them and your folks to even be friendly but something like this would just put things wide open again look evelyn i've given into you on everything religious for all practical purposes i've lived my life as if i weren't a jew but this ceremony was my firstborn son it's steep it's part of my roots can't you understand the only thing i can understand is if we start out with this jewish ceremony for our son it's the beginning of something something between us well maybe the wall's already there and we just both could give up their faith which i could never do or both could accept a third faith together could you no could you no father manning had one final choice he said that people do recover from being in love and while it could be terrible at first it would be easier than all the heartaches we might have if we did get married is that what you want to do call it off no darling no i love you so i'm skip alzheimer uh welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um yeah that one was a lulu uh the general rule of thumb is if the question if there's a question about relationships in the title such as should i marry outside my faith the answer is almost always no so am i ready for marriage no um going steady question mark no so uh this one is just way over the top um and family films kinda shows their cards a little bit um they they seem to give respect to cath to the three religions in north america uh catholic protestant and um uh jews judaism um but it seems like they're really siding with the protestants on this one and that's really kind of their background is they were a protestant um educate religious educational film company so um yeah made for television made for churches made for uh marriage counselors um really pretty amazing um there's a i think there's a comedy there's a comedy team um ann mirra and um i can't suddenly remember his name he just passed away uh shoot uh everybody's gonna be writing it in the in the comments and i'm not gonna be able to read it and um and jerry stiller their comedy shtick was that ann was uh catholic and uh jerry of course was jewish and that was their spiel for a long time was kind of the also the fact that she was much taller than him big irish woman um but that was their shtick um and i think there was also a sitcom uh bridget loves bernie well i'm just spacing here coffee would help if you buy me coffee my brain might pop up um yeah bridget loves bernie um which was meredith baxter uh and uh john bernie bob bernie bernie bernie anyways they were also a similar type of uh jewish and catholic and those were sitcoms and funny things and this was not this was the opposite of that so uh yeah i came out of the gate running and uh so anyways 1962 that film came out i'd like to think things have changed but i don't know who knows anymore all right uh this next film is uh because it's officially autumn this is this film that shows up in a lot of cornet films this kind of replaces the uh we call the china girl or the leader lady as far as a way to make sure when you're processing the film that the colors are mostly balanced and you know as people recognize this is a pretty good this film's in pretty good shape um as far as the color goes there's a little bit of fading but um in general it's pretty good there's some geeking out for you um so this next film is um i did a show uh called it's wonderful being a girl and it was all films about um made for girls talking about puberty and the wonderful changes taking place to their bodies and this film is interesting because this is british uh the title got clipped on it in the beginning a little bit that clip but you'll get the point this is uh called growing girls and it's uh i don't know the exact year that this came out i want to say that it might be before world war ii but i'm not 100 sure well no it's after uh i did a little bit of research 1949 so it's definitely after okay so here's grooming girls mary is 13 she's growing up from a child into a woman various changes are taking place in her to understand them we must start at the beginning of the story in the farmyard you can see how baby chicks grow into bullets and cockroaches which before long become adult fowls you can also see how calves become heifers and heifers grow up into cows it's the same with humans babies become children and in time children become adults grown men and women between childhood and being grown up there's a period called adolescence when the bodies of boys and girls are adapting themselves to this change adolescence means becoming adult here's a group of essence among them is mary and here's her mother an adult woman growing up doesn't happen overnight it's a gradual process which takes place in girls between the ages of 11 and 15. nature is getting these girls ready to be able to have babies themselves when they're grown up but let's go back to the farm you're at a moment when the bullet becomes an adult hen she lays eggs so do all mother birds and fishes and reptiles these eggs have some sort of shell or skin to protect the babies inside them but animals such as the cow and the human don't lay their eggs instead the eggs develop into babies inside their bodies where they're warm and well protected and where they can feed and grow until the time comes for them to be born to get ready for this important job of motherhood a girl's body has to change in various ways this 11 year old has still got the straight figure of a tall child but at 13 mary's age the breasts begin to develop the hips broaden and the legs grow stronger at 15 a girl is almost fully developed with narrow waist broad hips and strong legs this means that she'll be able to have babies when the time comes while these changes are taking place the reproductive system inside her body is developing too here are the uterus or womb the ovaries one on each side of the body and the fallopian tubes which connect them the ovaries are about the size and shape of walnuts each contains thousands of eggs my note is a speck of dust of which only a few hundred ever mature once a month an egg in one of the ovaries does mature and it starts on a journey to the uterus when it's ready it pushes through the walls of the ovary and the fine fingers at the entrance of the tube guided in the tubes are from three to five inches long and it takes the egg about eight days to reach the uterus the uterus is a small pouch shaped like a pear upside down while the eggs still traveling along the tube the lining of the uterus swells with an extra supply of blood ready for its arrival this is to feed the egg should it have become fertilized by meeting a sperm or male cell if it is fertilized the egg will attach itself to the lining and begin to develop the walls of the uterus are muscular and elastic so it can stretch to many times its normal size and hold a growing baby now what happens when the egg isn't fertilized there's no further need for it in the uterus and so it disperses and it passes out of the body by way of the vagina which leads from the uterus the thickened lining of the uterus walls is no longer of any use either so it too dissolves and leaves the body by way of the vagina the vagina you realize opens downwards between the water passage called the urethra and the back passage called the rectum once a month the process repeats itself let's watch it again about a week after the end of each period an egg matures and leaves the ovary it enters a tube straight away and it takes about eight days to travel along to the uterus meanwhile the blood vessels in the lining of the uterus walls are preparing a rich supply of extra blood to feed the egg should it have become fertilized by a male cell if it is fertilized it attaches itself to the lining of the uterus walls and grows into a baby if it isn't fertilized it disperses and passes out through the vagina there's no need for the extra supply of blood lining the uterus walls so about the 28th day it too passes out of the body by way of the vagina getting rid of this waste matter from the uterus is called menstruation a word which comes from the latin for month it lasts for a period of three to five days and is often called the period menstruation usually starts between the ages of 12 and 14 though individuals vary some girls may start earlier others later it takes place regularly in every normal woman until no more egg cells mature in the ovaries which happens around about 45 to 50. it's part of growing up into a woman who will one day be able to have children of her own it's a perfectly normal and natural process and not an illness mary is just starting on a menstrual period so she's feeling a bit tired and she's glad to get home and relax she looks at her diary to see the date it's may the first she can expect her next period to begin on may the 29th four weeks later but at first it may not be regular as the different parts of the body may not have got used to working together as a team there's nothing to worry about even if the interval is a matter of months it will soon establish itself in a regular cycle of about 28 days from the start of one period to the start of the next during the period sanitary pads must be worn to prevent soiling clothes more pads are needed at the beginning of the period than towards the end it's essential to change them often for hygienic reasons and to prevent the skin from being chafed they should be changed night and morning and whenever possible during the day soil pad should be wrapped in paper at once and burnt or else put into the proper receptacle provided for them only soluble pans without their gauze wrapping may be put down the lavatory pen when you're buying pads it's important to choose the right size an individual matter mary finds that the smallest size o is most comfortable and it gives her adequate protection the average number of pads needed by most girls is one packet a month but some need more the amount of flow varies at different periods and in different people pads can be secured to your suspender belt or attached to a sanitary belt which is safer and more comfortable if a period is very heavy or if it lasts for more than five days or if it brings severe pain it's a good thing to consult a doctor the shop's closing but mary won't be caught unprepared as she's brought her next month's packet it's important to wash often during the period you can have a bath though not a cold one as you don't want to catch a chill safe so not being able to change pads during the day dust yourself with talcum powder after washing and rub in some barassic ointment or cold cream normally you shouldn't get chafed at all so with comfortable pads to wear and simple health rules to follow the monthly period needn't be so very inconvenient don't worry if you feel slack or lazy menstruation sometimes has that effect while it lasts mary decides to go to bed earlier than usual and get some extra sleep avoiding constipation helps too you can do this by drinking plenty of water and by eating brown bread fruit and vegetable the ideal is to aim at a regular motion at the same time each day you should try to to keep your feet dry that's all they will but what about wet days the answer is to take off your wet shoes and stockings as soon as you can when you get home or when you arrive at school and change into dry ones washing your hair is perfectly all right provided you dry thoroughly afterwards you must avoid getting a cold swimming well it's as well to put off your swim till the period's over because the cold water might give you a chill but you can dance you can cycle as usual to school or in the country you can play hockey or any other game provided you feel like it some girls do and some don't there's no hard and fast room just do as much as you feel you can do it that's far the best plan it's not unusual to have some discomfort in the first two days of a period try to ignore it but just see if there's a hot print going at the end of the period your body has got rid of the material it no longer needs you'll find you have more energy than you had just before it began and you will feel fine sorry i'm eating some homemade vietnamese vermicelli in pork sorry fascinating film and uh the whole fact of burning your pads reminding me in the film to serve with love where sydney partier plays a uh poitiers not poor day um plays a school teacher in um the uk and there's a scene where they try to uh goad him by burning feminine hygiene product in the stove and it gets really mad but here it is on film that says that's what you're supposed to do with them so kind of interesting all right we got lined up here this one i haven't seen before it's called um old woman and her pig we're going all over the place the fire began to burn the stick the stick began to beat the dog the dog began to bite the pig the pig jumped over the style and so the old woman got home that night [Music] well that film was just crazy i'm gonna rewind it because i saw something really cool at the beginning um so contrary to popular belief oh let me use this um i have not seen this film before um and it is absolutely crazy um this is comp this is very similar to a time that when i was doing live shows i always show a film strip beforehand that the audience reads and i showed this film script called i think it was big klaus little class and it was so insane it was and i have not again i have not seen it before and it was one of these types of things where one of the characters is constantly doing things to the other character and you know people are getting killed ending up in bags chopped up just crazy stuff where is this i just saw it there was a leader lady or china girl that i thought was really interesting there she was back it up a little bit this particular machine is a little difficult with uh doing frame by frame there she is so um we talked about used to be called china girls now we call them leader ladies because there's not really a clear idea why they were called china girls to begin with um because there were very few that were actually chinese but this is uh at the beginning of the film during the countdown the audience isn't supposed to see it but um this is supposed to give the film lab that's processing the film a sense of you know how it's coming out the you know are they processing it right so that all the colors are popping so you in this case there would actually be this film was faded red but there would be uh white and black for contrast but then also a variety of different colors and then the the woman is for skin tones because if the skin tones are off that's something that humans notice and it just doesn't feel right when somebody's kind of greenish so yeah that film was kind of nuts i love it i love uh finding her film and going like whoa that was crazy i wish it was anime um special thanks to frank and jerry for a delightful delicious coffee coffee is what we're doing just say yeah there's this guy around lunch who'll like bust out a bunch of the 60 millimeter films and show them to you uh whether you like them or not and sometimes they are crazy sometimes they're boring you know yeah okay what do we got next um wow we're all over the place all right it's time to watch an episode of inside out inside out was the 19 early 70s probably around 72 it was a public television show um and most of the films dealt with kids emotions and in certain situations and um this one is no exception i remember seeing these as a kid especially if i was sick home it would come on in the afternoon and the idea is that that public uh schools would bring the tv in and they would turn on the tv to public television station and then they would watch this and there would be a discussion um inside out was also distributed on 16 millimeter to schools and um there's some great things on there on was it friday maybe it was i showed uh something someone's special about a little kid who has a crush on his teacher and uh his imagination about that uh so here's home sweet home enjoy [Music] [Music] hey [Music] i'm watching what happened to you yourself know what i didn't serve our parents right if we ran away oh where would we go final places before we'd really get it when we came back well we wouldn't come back what do you mean well at least not until we wanted really worry them it oh maybe yours would not mind i'll go to my house hey oh shut up what do you want to play basketball hockey see steve is that you he's in this don't you think you should finish cleaning the bathroom before you play oh mom eddie came all the way over here just to play with me you never get to play together can't wait to see you promised me last night that you finished cleaning the bathroom right after why you love my daddy's sister i do it all the time i love jobs and everybody else and everybody in this family has a job and your job is to clean that bathroom now i want you in there in five minutes do you understand okay all right hey why don't we really run away we can live in my old neighborhood my grandma is up there i'll do it leave me place behind the gas station then 10 30 do everything you need yeah okay did you have to do that that's your brother well did you have to get a shadow away did you did you did you did you did you did just a cat so what's the difference that cat was ruining my furniture plowing slowing and crawling how would you drop it you don't miss shadow at all do you i bet you could give me away you wouldn't miss me insecure you're getting to be just like your father can i sit in your precious furniture just go away [Applause] look mom i'm clawing your furniture all you do is make my life miserable you used to be such a good boy whenever i felt bad you would help me now all you do is that's a good question oh why can't you behave like your sister because i'm big enough to fight back i've been sitting here normally they end i don't know they they're all over the map so this one i hadn't seen in a while so i couldn't remember what it was about actually so sorry about that uh somebody was like please give from yellow to green to blue to whatever so the deal with this is this was a local uh dude who collected a bunch of movie trailers and these are tv trailers so these were meant to be shown on television they're not like the longer three five minute trailers you would see in a theater um and so uh somebody collected a bunch of these that were on these little tiny reels and they left them at their mom's house in the basement and the basement flooded and basically the mom's like i need i need you to get these out of here and so the collector reached out to me and said hey do you want these so i got them and there's some great stuff in there but the problem is you saw basically the the fading is it's it's sometimes called color breathing so that it's uneven color shift from uh inside the frame and from frame to frame and that's due to water seeping into the the box or seeping onto the real um it's kind of sad but i you know i got them anyways and collect them and show them and stuff like that because they are fascinating uh but it's hard to fix that's a really hard thing to restore if it was a consistent color shift i could fix it if it was just occasional frames i could fix it but you know throughout an entire film it's really difficult to do there are some tools out there but they're very expensive like tens of thousands of dollars anyways so what a roller coaster ride today was and thank you for joining us um i didn't plan on it being a roller coaster ride but it just like i'll share this and i'll share this and oh i showed this and then there were a couple of surprises in there where i was like whoa i wasn't expecting that so thank you so much for tuning in and for your time and your eyeballs and your comments and uh we'll be back tomorrow friday one
