hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films I've pre-recorded uh this show because I am actually in Austin Texas um for fantastic Fest and I'll be doing a show on Monday 8 p.m at the high ball if you're in town come on by it's free um and that's at the the South Lamar Alamo anyways uh so today uh we're gonna be watching some films about glass uh let's see I'm gonna go ahead and intro everything and then let you watch and uh the first film we're gonna watch is a silent film by Ford Motor Company about safety glass and about why it's important and how it's manufactured then an awesome uh non-narrated film but it has an amazing soundtrack called glass it's either Belgium or Dutch I can't remember which it is then uh broken glass which is a driver safety film stayed in glass a stained glass which is how to do stained glass then we're going to watch a bunch of public service announcements commercials for glass um this is part of the Duke ad used project where we digitize a bunch of TV commercials and advertising and this is a public service service announcements about how much How Great Glass is buying beverages in glass buying products in glass and then they have this New Concept which is a convenient no deposit no return glass and what's really fascinating is they have a band a hippie kind of 70s band called the glass bottle let's sing about how great it is to not have to return your glass bottles um of course what this meant was that uh littering like increased because people um had no compelling reason to keep glass so they would just toss it out their window um and landfills would also get filled with glass so it is interesting that you have these kind of hippies uh touting something that is very non-environmental in hindsight um yeah so uh hopefully you'll enjoy this if you like what you saw you can hit the Thumbs Up Button the like button uh and uh we will see you soon have a great weekend take care foreign [Music] hahaha [Music] laughs [Music] foreign [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] laughs [Music] thank you [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] something else [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] technology [Applause] [Applause] here [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] thank you foreign [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] thank you foreign [Music] thank you [Music] fight the car get this picture at only 25 miles per hour you're traveling through space at more than 36 feet a second the crash stops the car but you keep going and smashing against the car's interior it wasn't until recent years that anyone knew what went on during the split-second duration of an automobile Collision one scientific approach to the problem was begun in 1947 when the state legislature established at the University of California The Institute of transportation and traffic engineering one of whose tests is to carry on collision engineering research the people of the Institute had learned that the study of Road accidents after they had happened failed to provide certain essential answers and so they developed controlled impact experiments cars Guided by tracks drawn by tow cables who Collide at predetermined speeds and at predetermined points are beginning to provide answers to some of the previously unanswered Collision questions but the most important question has to do with human safety in a collision what happens to the occupants of the car when the experiments were begun this in itself posed a serious problem who would the occupants be here they are anthropometric dummies they're more practical than real people for this job because we can insert instruments in their heads chests hips and thighs to learn exactly what stresses strains and forces they will face in the secondary Collision the Collision inside the car where dummies are damaged and human motorists injured or killed the only effective means of ensuring that the motorist's forward motion is is the safety seat belt or shoulder harness everyone will agree that good brakes are a necessity for any car safety seat belts and shoulder harnesses are really brakes for the Riders but motorists who are otherwise careful often neglect something important the children to find out what happens to unrestrained Children during collisions lifelike dolls just about the size and weight of three-year-olds are included as passengers [Music] other dolls simulating babies will also ride during various phases of the tests [Music] now everything is in Readiness and what you're about to see will be a unique experience [Music] in these experiments you will see deliberate accidents exactly as they take place [Music] foreign moderate speed but here's what happens when two cars meet at 20 miles an hour [Music] in slow motion the adults with belts or harness reveal by their motions that strong forces are at work here thank you while the child with no restraint is thrown forward by the impact and may be very seriously injured [Music] 30 miles an hour you'd still consider yourself to be driving at a moderate speed but not through a blind intersection [Music] for you after the right of way [Music] in slow motion photography the impact situation seems to last minutes instead of a second or less completing instant during which most of the damage is done in all of the low speed crashes the babies would have been injured to some extent and in some instances injuries would probably have been critical the unrestrained child's injuries in the words of the technical report were indicated as being critical to fatal [Music] for the little girls it could have been the Prelude to Long weeks in the hospital or perhaps their last ride forever [Music] we've been talking about accidents occurring at what we might consider moderate speeds in today's driving even 40 miles an hour may seem moderate but a speed of 40 miles per hour through Street intersections indicates a reckless disregard for safety and human life you cannot control the speed or the actions of the other driver and he may run that stoplight for stop sign at 40 miles per hour you're traveling at 59 feet a second and if suddenly you have only the stationary windshield or some other part of the car's interior to stop you the inside Collision could easily be disastrous equally disastrous would be a collision with the pavement [Music] you were thrown out of the car [Music] in the 40 miles per hour experiment no seat belts were used and this shows what happens when your car is stopped by a collision [Music] and you keep going [Music] thank you [Music] country [Music] at the conclusion of each experimental impact the long careful work of data analysis begins a medical doctor makes an anatomical diagnosis of the damage to each dummy for its suggested relation to human injury pattern it translates scientific data Betsy is more of a poignant reminder that it's all reticularly whenever Young Writers become traffic statistics at the tights notes are made and photographs taken of every detail including skid marks and even the minor debris of the carefully planned Collision side impact collisions sudden and unhappen at any intersection they're among the most common type students and cause serious injury and death even when they happen that what we consider moderate speeds most of us live in areas where there are corners and cross streets and the largest percentage of all automobile accidents happen within 10 miles of home [Music] it's the same route we travel every day to work to school to Market sometimes we cover the ground several times a day we're so used to it that we've become inattentive we don't concentrate the way we should and even though we never go over 25 miles an hour we're in particular at the in urban the end of each block do it doesn't pay to take him for granted sins of a side impact experiments that the one fat and injury if we do become involved in a collision is the safety belt you could wear this precautionary device in all your driving for years and never need it then in one Split Second it could save your life or prevent horrible injury or disfigurement [Music] but the most infallible safety Factor can't be built into the car unfortunately it cannot be purchased as an accessory anywhere because the most infallible safety factor is you yourself when you devote all of your attention to being a really skilled and careful driver on the streets and at the intersections around home [Music] or out on the open highway or the Super Highway [Music] whenever your car is in motion and control of the driving situation is in your hands [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] unlike most other forms of art the stained glass window belongs wholly to the Christian era it's a direct outgrowth of the lattice window the method of filling a window space when glass was made only in very small pieces with later advances in glass making and in glass painting and firing the art of the stained glass window developed to the high standards so closely associated with the flowering of Gothic architecture in the Middle Ages in those days the technique differed little from the methods now in use a successful design demands a thorough knowledge of stained glass window technique forms are shaped with due regard to the Natural character and cutting possibilities of the glass the lines of lead are placed as an integral part of the design as well as to join the pieces of glass the color of a stained glass window is obtained by the color of the glass itself the sample glass Brack is in effect the artist's palette providing a remarkably wide range of glowing colors from dark to light in his choice of color the artist must visualize the effect that light shining through the glass will give to the finished window the most effective color pattern gives full expression to the character and Luminosity of the glass here the artist's subject appropriately enough is the making of a stained glass window the window design being divided into four sections each section depicting a different step in the process for Windows of large size the original design is made in reduced scale an enlarged outline drawing is then made actual window size here the original design is actual window sized and the outline is simply made by tracing each form is outlined indicating each separate piece of glass and giving the complete drawing much the appearance of a jigsaw puzzle repeating the tracing process provides two identical outline drawings one called the cartoon the other known as the cut line the cartoon is used as a pattern in assembling the separate pieces of glass and in leading the window lead lines are therefore drawn parallel with each form in the design the lines being spaced according to the desired width of the lead the cut line as the name implies is a glass cutting pattern as the various sections of the cut line will be separated to make individual patterns they are numbered to avoid later confusion in assembling the cut line is cut into separate sections with three bladed scissors which remove a thin strip of paper as they cut this thin strip represents the space required between pieces of glass or the core of the lead from the cut line sections conveniently assembled on the workbench a section is selected for use as a glass cutting pattern before cutting the glass is checked for color with the original design Cutters are sometimes used but the glazier's wheel as used here is more often preferred much of the glass used for stained glass windows has a ripple or otherwise irregular finish on one surface and is comparatively flat on the other side cutting is done on the smoother surface Which is less difficult to cut antique or pot metal glass which is most in use is colored in its molten state by the addition of metallic oxides some bright colors such as the red we see here cannot be made sufficiently light and transparent by the pot metal method for these colors a flashed glass is used pure and colorless on one side the other side coated with a thin layer of colored glass painting follows on an easel illuminated from the rear to give a working light comparable to the effect of the finished window lead lines are first painted into exclude disturbing light spaces between the pieces of glass also so the finished window will be better visualized as painting proceeds working on a vertical easel requires that each piece of glass be fastened in place temporarily but securely the wax is removed before the glass is fired in placing the glass on the painting easel a narrow space is left between sections this space roughly corresponds to that required for the core of the lead the pigment a powdered oxide is first painted on and then fired into the glass colors are limited ranging from a reddish brown to Black thorough mixing of the pigment is necessary to avoid blistering of the paint when it's fired Gum arabic makes the paint stick to the glass painting proceeds with the glass in place on the easel as in most other art mediums methods may vary somewhat to suit the aims of the individual one method is to First paint in the main lines of the design or as in this case a brown matte coat is first applied uniformly over the entire surface the paint quickly dries and becomes completely opaque it's much like a thick dust which gives name to the dusting process whereby the paint is lightly removed to provide highlights where desired with preliminary highlighting completed the glass is ready for first firing a glass firing kiln contains two separate compartments the upper one is the annealing or toughening chamber below is the oven itself otherwise known as the firing chamber the heat is brought up slowly firing heat is usually not reached for an hour or more main order which is heated by fumes from the firing chamber directly below as the heat increases in the firing chamber it also increases in the annealing chamber but with less intensity in this slowly increasing heat the glass gradually toughens finally the glass is sufficiently heated to withstand the intense heat of the firing chamber itself without danger of cracking temperature alone will not accurately indicate when the glass has reached the firing point which varies according to the type of glass and the ingredients in the paint experience and close observation are necessary at this critical stage with the firing Point actually reached the glass is practically at surface melting Heat firing continues a few minutes until Paint and Glass are firmly fused together here again experiences needed to determine when the glass has received just the right amount of firing the tray is then returned to the annealing chamber which becomes a cooling chamber when the heat is turned off the glass must be cooled slowly to avoid cracking not for several hours can it be safely removed from the kiln infusing with the glass the paint has lightened in color adding subtle gradations of tone to the Natural quality of the glass with the fire glass back in place on the easel the pigment is mixed for further painting this time with the black oxide hey Mom can Dave and I people who make one-way bottles ask you please don't litter [Music] introducing soda pop and the one-way bottles [Music] a one-way [Music] [Applause] [Music] one-way bottles the one way to buy soft drinks [Music] glass is beautiful it Sparkles shines and shows what's inside no other container man makes his cleanup purer or more natural but some people are worried about all the glass they're using they wonder what happens to Glass when they're finished with it well one thing that happens is that glass is melted down and used again to make new glass today the glass container industry reuses millions of glass bottles to make new glass bottles and jars in the future we'll reuse even more and from now until forever we'll be able to reuse them again and again and that's what really makes glass beautiful [Music] glass it comes from the Earth it's three-quarters sand some people think all the glass they use is a bigger problem than it is and they're worried about conserving our natural resources well the people who make glass bottles are concerned too they've always used old glasses to make new glass and they found many useful ways that glass can be returned to the Earth there are machines that grind it into grains like sand glass makes the most sanitary landfill it's good for Road beds you can mix it with asphalt make glass Vault and pay roads with it from the earth the glass and back to the earth a cycle as natural as life itself the people who make glass bottles are doing their part and you can help too don't leave bottles where they don't belong [Music] s something great you can write [Music] really coming on the glass bottle [Applause] s [Music] you know [Music] search the Hills [Music] Make Love Not litter the people who make glass bottles ask you to please help keep America beautiful [Music] it's uncanny how many ways bottles are really saying something it's uncanny how many ways bottles are saying something great [Music] look around and see your soft drink in front of your heart again it's just a snap for you to recover really coming on [Music] many ways [Music] [Applause] soft drinks taste great enough [Music] really coming on the glass bottle babies are different from big people and they need special care that's why almost all baby food comes in glass is pure it doesn't affect taste it shows what's left of the carrots and if there are any left you can recap and refrigerate them what's good for babies is good for people that's why soft drinks and other good things come in bottles but now a totally different advantage of glass has become important glass can be recycled when this bottle or that jar is empty it can be returned to a glass container plant ground up and melted to make new glass bottles so we're conserving natural resources and solving Solid Waste problems and that means we'll be making this country a little nicer for a little girl to grow up in when all these bottles were full they could quench a thirst or make a mouth water but now empty bottles can have a new life used bottles are ground up and melted [Music] and used again to make new bottles bottle so the bottle you drank from last week made part of the brand new bottle you drink from next week that's the life cycle of glass maybe tomorrow you drink to it babies need special care that's why almost all baby food comes in Glass glasses clean pure and recappable but now there's something about glass that makes it more special to babies glass can be recycled this bottle and that jar can be returned to a glass container plant ground up and melted to make new glass bottles that means we're conserving natural resources solving Solid Waste problems and making this country a little nicer for a little guy to grow up in everybody you know grew up with bottles we took our first gulps of milk from glass baby bottles our baby food from glass jars then we graduated to soft drinks in bottles and even played kids games with the empties we trusted glass because we could see what we were drinking and drank from the bottle because we knew it was clean what's more we could recap it save it and count on it to stay fresh but now we're concerned with our environment and that's an even stronger reason for buying glass glass can be recycled it's being returned to glass container plants ground up melted and used to make new bottles so the bottle you drank from last week can be part of the bottle you drink from next week right now millions of bottles and jars are being recycled we're not playing games without a label you'd never know what's inside this can so to help you along they stick a label on it but even with that pretty picture on the outside you still can't see what's on the inside now with food packed and glass you don't even need a label because you can see things as they really are which means you get the luxury of seeing what you're buying before you buy it it's perfectly clear glass is better Pinto a man who knows how to hold his beer in bottles beer people wouldn't have their beer any other way [Music] glass can't mess around with the taste of beer in one-way bottles every beer you drink tastes the way it's supposed to good clean cold thank you and when beer people have it at home one-way bottles again they can even save you money get to know what beer people know learn how to hold your beer well the only thing I can't figure out is you really can't get into even 10 because it's got those two funny straps going across the button over the shoulders she died aren't you ever happy unless you're tearing somebody apart he's interested in my mind he said are you always getting me to call the babies really great learn how to hold your beer no neck bottles that's how that's how to get all the taste out of the beer you drink at home they're Pure Glass and glass can't change Beer's taste you taste good fresh blue beer that tastes like beer yet this bottle is low cost and no return when you finish the beer you're through with a bottle compact two enough for a party fit on a single shelf and each hold the full 12 ounces learn how to hold your beer the leading brands are now available in no neck bottles bring home the brand you drink in low-cost no return no neck
