hi I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and think better about them think better about ourselves put everything in context um or just give ourselves a break from whatever the headlines are nowadays uh so this is pre-recorded as I am I think in Bloomington Indiana uh either giving a presentation or um watching a presentation at the century of 16 millimeter which is a uh conference celebrating the 100th anniversary of the film format 16 millimeter and that's what we celebrate here every day so uh I'm there cheerleading or I don't know well what I'll be doing but I'll be there presenting and talking about what I do including uh this show uh but I wanted I still have so many 16 millimeter films showing up um literally it's averaging like probably 20 films a day or that are showing up now from two different sources so we got new stuff I want to show you so we're going to start off with a long film it's a Christian film as I have been showing you a bunch of Christian films and this one is called what is a church and what I like about it is it is in another one of these films that challenges the um the middle aged middle class white guy in uh rethinking what his belief system is about churches but in the course of it he he has his college age son and radical friend radical friend uh who he's not very sure about and so uh let's see if he finally gets the message uh so this is what is a church enjoy it all started with that Community survey our church got involved in it was hard work knocking on doors throughout the community but I thought it was a good idea and I went along with it it was a pretty complete job too we talked to city planners welfare agencies school officials the police department judges in the municipal and juvenile courts just about everybody who's supposed to know what's going on in our city it wasn't easy believe me trying to find out the facts about the people in our community that our church is supposed to serve it was an all-out effort that really kept the wheels spinning at our church and at the other churches in our area that we're taking part in the survey well John what's a good word well I'm not sure how good it is but uh hell there it is the last of the survey oh man am I glad that's over have a chair and uh thanks now we can start working start working that's all we've been doing these last few weeks I know what you mean but I uh I think it'll be worth it I don't know more I climb stairs push doorbells and the doors slam to my face the more I wondered what all this has to do with our church John we have to find out the facts about the people in the community so we'll know how the church can serve them Pastor I'm not complaining about the facts it's what some of our people think they're going to do about them the bothers me well remember we're only in the discussion and Analysis stage well just the same when I hear what some of the others want to do I'm about ready to blow my top now frankly I don't get it just what is a church anyway [Music] our Minister was a driving force behind the survey and he put in more effort and longer hours than any of us I had to admire him even though I didn't see eye to eye with him when the facts were all in I mean well after all that work and after all the sore feet and the bruised Egos and weeks of searching out the names and locations of all those people it was the interpretation of what to do with all the things the survey turned up that I disagreed with [Music] hi how you doing hi Dad what do you think hey that's crazy wouldn't you say that ah crazy what is it the message is right there love can't you see it do you see it well sure Dad it's plain as day if you say so I uh I think it's upside down make yourself at home yeah thanks I'll see you boys later hey you're not gonna work I thought you wanted to get away from all that hmm the printer's Inked of my forefathers cautious through my veins It's My Life Doug My One True Joy that's why I took the job as enter the College Newspaper and you're going to help me write a story a story what kind of story my first week home is six months and you want me to spend it acting as your leg man oh no if you think I'm gonna spend my time snooping around musty libraries or quizzing The Establishment Types on what they think about the younger generation no thanks I've got a great idea for a whole series of Articles what's what's the hottest subject on campus today I'll tell you religion everybody's asking the ultimate questions everybody's searching right yeah in a way I guess they are well the whole psychedelic movement uh drugs the the the trend to mysticism and the Eastern religions see in thing well what do you plan to do a whole series of Articles exploring in depth all the Contemporary religions and Cults starting with this thing called Christianity and that's where you come in well how can I help I mean there are thousands of books you can read ministers you could interview well I don't want that I've read all the books some of all the way from the existentialist to the fundamentalist no what I want is a good look at a typical Church in a typical American town I want to see how Christianity works right down in the nitty-gritty of life because if it doesn't work there then all the big words in the books don't mean anything do they and you've selected our church and my family for your guinea pig eh okay but I don't know where to tell you to start anything that the church people are doing let's see Dan says something about some of the members of the church were coming over tonight for some sort of committee meeting but I don't think you'd be interested in that no I am interested okay I'll ask Dad if we can sit in as Observers [Music] still interested sorry but I'm counting on you to fill me in on some of the gaps and what they're discussing what comes next well I think they're going to have a little more discussion and then have a vote perhaps we'd better get started ready fine if we can all find our seats again it's time to conclude our discussion for tonight at this time I'm going to ask Pastor Peterson to summarize our discussion so far and place the issue squarely before us as only he can well thank you George for that vote of confidence you've all seen the photographs that we had taken during our survey I'm sure they will help to keep alive in your mind some of the many pressing needs of the people in our community that the survey uncovered people with whom it is difficult for us to communicate because they are deaf and yet they need the gospel too we should minister to them just think how many working mothers with small children there are right in our congregation well our survey revealed several times that number within reach of our church many of these families have no contact with a church now these are people we have not been reaching with our present program the question we now face is how can we best help them all of you know what's been happening out east and south of our city hundreds of new homes springing up everywhere what about the families who are moving into these churchless communities then let us consider the young people whose lives have already been tainted with police records perhaps if we had ministered to this young person sooner he would not be where he is today and there are many others those with problems of illiteracy and well we could go on and on these people need our Christian love and concern the question now is how are we going to respond to their needs what specific action are we going to recommend to the congregation for the coming year in short what kind of church are we going to be I want to share a dream with you a vision that I have for our church and I want to capsule that dream into one phrase the involved Church some have called it the Servant Church or the ministering church but in any case it all means the same thing it means our church our congregation of people ministering to human needs both physically and spiritually becoming deeply involved in in things that the church has never been involved in before on our part it means personal commitment personal service all in the spirit and Love Of Christ with him at the very center of all we do this is the gospel this is the good news in action this is my dream what does that mean to all of us here tonight it means there are people out there who are disillusioned and hurt many who have no faith in God or in themselves they have no hope we need to bring them hope and so in conclusion I would like to suggest that we recommend to the congregation a program that will meet these needs now are there any further questions or comments yes I think we should go slow on this we need time to think about it some of us were talking a lot of this is uh well it's a new direction we're taking and I'm not sure we should go on with it after all uh I'm not the only one who feels this way others who aren't here tonight would agree I think we should discuss it very seriously before we try anything like this in fact there are some things the church ought not to be doing well certainly we're not a welfare agency so I move we postpone a decision until we've had more time to study and think this whole business through [Music] hey man already good morning fantastic day do you know what time it is oh I'm sorry I just wanted to uh transcribe some of my notes from last night's meeting before they got stamped man when you're working on a story you are a holy Terror I don't know about the Holy but I am a terror especially when I uh smell a fight developing where are my slippers I had them last night uh oh hey did you say a fight what kind of a fight oh come on don't tell me you didn't see it the fight between people like uh your dad against the pastor and uh the school teacher George Chapman hey Jack I want to call that a fight well uh call it what you like but uh just what is your father's view of the church I'm not sure I know maybe you should ask him [Music] please [Music] oh hey looking for a job no I thought we might have lunch together well that's nice of you to offer to buy me a meal son yeah oh sure Dad sure and you can give me an advance on my allowance I knew there was a catch anyway uh I can't make it for lunch today I'm tied up where's your buddy oh Jack he's busy he's writing a story for his paper yeah Doug uh I've been meaning to talk to you about Jack but what um what kind of boy is he what do you mean Dad well that's some of the things he says I mean there's something of a radical isn't he jack Oh No in fact on the campus most of the real radicals consider him something of a square he's just got an inquiring mind that's all well I certainly hope that's all I wouldn't want you running around with a one of those wild-eyed revolutionary types dad um I'm doing a little inquiring of my own today well about what I bet those things the pastor was talking about he sounded like good ideas to me why were you against them well there's more to it than you might think now there are a lot of good ideas a lot of good causes and projects somebody ought to do something about I don't know who but I'm sure it's not the church's business what is the church's business dad why you know what it is Doug or the church's work is uh well to preach the gospel to win people to Christ and is that all what about the things Pastor Peterson talked about like the church being involved in people's lives didn't Jesus do more than preach and teach didn't he involve himself in the lives of all the people around him with those that were sick or hungry or all mixed up well later Doug we'll talk about it you all right sure did later [Music] how do you like it well I don't know how do you feel about it I need a few more facts um I thought I'd like to interview your pastor I think that's a great idea I'll ask Dad if we can go along with the committee tomorrow afternoon okay where are they going oh they're going down to talk to judge Emery Juvenile Court hey Jack you got two right feet oh well what do you know give me you know I can't figure you out I mean this this story has got you all turned on oh well I'm intrigued I have to admit you know I wasn't brought up in the church like you were so everything I know is well second hand and what I've read or or uh what I've gathered in some fraternity bull sessions which you'll have to agree aren't always perfectly objective and now well what I've learned since I got here isn't isn't just Theory it's it's for real like this idea of the of the involved Church the pastor has man if that ever caught on with the millions of Christians in the world kaboom yeah what's the matter I was just thinking about Dad yep here's a bit of a problem Are there many like you he's a terrific guy Jack and a real Christian sure maybe I just don't know what a Christian is [Music] John uh would you mind pacing a different route to next time around you're beginning to wear a path in the carpet what is it dear dear it's bothering you I'm worried about Doug and that friend of his that boy's something of a radical if you ask me is that really it or is it some of the things the committee is proposing why is it John why are you having such a struggle about it can't you see what's happening all these fancy ideas they're just side issues I'm not opposed to the church doing things for people trying new methods it sounds as though you are no I just want us to stick to the main job if we if we just concentrate on preaching the word and let these uh these problem people become Christians and all these problems and take care of themselves well can't we do both [Music] before concluding I'd like to read you something that came across my desk the other day it sums up my feeling about what I've been saying quotes a divorce court judge he says whenever I have to preside over the breaking up of a family I cannot escape the feeling that I may be instrumental in contributing to the increasing number of cases which are flooding our Juvenile Courts statistics indicate that the great majority of juvenile court cases grow out of broken homes the great need in our society today is for agencies in our communities which will carry on whether parents fail frankly this is why I feel that you're coming here today is somewhat of an answer to prayer because we have been trying for a long time to get this community interested in rehabilitating juveniles with very little success we need the help of citizens like you who are willing to get involved with these youngsters do you know that here in our city one out of nine youths between the ages of 10 and 18 ends up in court and that one out of six of the boys in that age group will get into some kind of legal trouble I have always believed that the Christian people have the best motivation have the most to offer these mixed up kids of any group of people in our community all I can say is when do you wish to start I have at least a dozen cases I can recommend right now well judge Emery we haven't that is uh it isn't definite yet our committee is still working on the problem I see Reverend I hope nothing stands in the way of your decision knowing the problem I don't see how any Christian can fail to see it as a mission field [Music] yes Mary oh John Bradley yes of course put him on hello pastor I've been wondering or could you spare some time this evening I'd like to have a good talk with you why certainly John I'd be glad to see you would you like to come over here well that'd be good uh would uh eight o'clock be all right with you fine I'll see you then that's it what it's done finished do you want to hear it your editorial what's a rush oh man we we leave for school in the morning that means I have an addition to get out like uh yesterday here I'll just read you some of the highlights uh the Christian religion's Dynamic potential for reshaping the world can hardly be questioned how's that for an opening spite of all the criticism so fashionable today and in spite of our own frequently expressed discontent with that hallowed and mosque covered institution called the church we have seen something new and exciting still with me it's great so far well be patient the ax is about to fall we have seen something new and exciting uh vitalizing wind to stirring the idea of involvement is struggling for expression but there is still ample room for skepticism as long as there are church members who use their faith as an escape from reality as a hiding place from life's tensions or a shelter from the dust and din of the world there is plenty of room for doubt judging by one Grassroots example we have to ask do church members themselves know what it means to be Christians or what the church really is in the words of a cynic of old we say physician heal thyself well [Music] I couldn't sleep last night thinking about it and after that meeting today in Judge hamri's Office on it I've sweated over it I still can't get a straight all right I guess it boils down to something Doug asked me the other day is a church how did you answer it well my idea doesn't jive with anybody else's the same what is your idea of a church John I'd like to hear it I don't think I've ever tried to put it in words to me the the church is um well it's it's something I've been a part of and it's been a part of me all my life a place to worship God to hear his word a place that's holy and set apart and the Christian's duty is to help make that place what God wants you to be a place where people can find him well I I guess that's the heart of it for me well that's fine John and it's all very true as far as it goes but you seem to think of the church primarily as a place some kind of institution that never changes I think of it primarily as people the church is a Congregation of people yes but even more it's a Congregation of ministers ministers yes the word Minister means to serve others now you spoke of a Christian's Duty the duty of a Christian goes far beyond merely keeping the the church building Pleasant or keeping the preacher paid or listening to sermons or going to Bible classes every Christian has a Ministry to perform I suppose I have heard all this before John I I wish you could see what some other Christian people are doing some of the Ministries with which they are becoming involved listen there are lay people who are volunteering to help start churches in unchurched areas men and women who are serving as foster parents for juveniles working men who are using their skills to help Mission Fields both here and abroad now those people are involved John they see the church not only as something to protect piece of architecture to inhabit they are trying to preserve and maintain the church they are trying to be the church or how would you define the church then the way the New Testament describes it as the body of Christ as Christians are the body of Christ that means that Christ is at work in this world through his church we are sent into the world with a mission in order that we might do the work that Christ would do if he were here now [Music] faster you've given me an awful lot to think about and all I can say is we've got plenty of work to do it's been great Doug that's great I uh no you're not terribly happy about my story though sorry about that I just think you need more facts you didn't dig deep enough that dog all right fellas mind if I come in sure Dad we're just about packed yeah and uh I've been meaning to ask you Mr Bradley if you'd like to have this why well sure that's very nice of me Jack uh before you go there's something I want to say I um well I want to thank both of you for what you've done the last few days what Dad what did we do well you ask questions you made me think sure Dad anytime Jack I hope you come back again soon pay us another visit well thanks I'd like to very much when you do I think you'll find our church involved in a lot of things we've never tackled before okay I'll see you boys downstairs okay Dad what is this Jack this is the church [Music] thank you [Music] all right in keeping with uh this uh um theme I'm I'm saying a lot because I'm looking at what the next film is uh I did a show called Reading Writing Revolution and there were films that were made in the late 60s early 70s that dealt with some con concepts of Revolution uh protest um and uh also the deal with hippies so this first film is is fascinating it's a really great film it's called 220 blues and it's basically you have a radical student black student who is basically speaking the truth which is that a black man is not really represented in American history the way that um well that whole argument is coming up again huh interesting it never really was solved uh anyways so he wants to do a protest and his white friends are trying to figure out what they're going to do about it so this is 220 Blues enjoy hey Sunny hey it looked pretty good out there man you got anything left for the Relay oh yeah I think so good because when I give you that baton you better tear like a rocket yeah do that by the way that time by Sonny Franklin sets a new record [Music] [Applause] America [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] oh boy that's for fat man you know hey man how you doing fine find your way around pretty good yeah [Music] okay hey you guys ran yesterday uh well you know so although the German immigrants in America encountered a good deal of Suspicion and uh some some personal uh distrust for the most part uh for the most part they they did all right but it was the Japanese Americans the Nissi on the west coast who suffered the most they actually were rounded up and sent to concentration camps internment camps we called them in California and Idaho man we're aware of all that we knew all about that at least I do I know all about the conditions that the Japanese had to face during the war and in addition to being rounded up and taken to concentration camps weren't there material possessions and lands confiscated for security reasons and I know all about the concentration camps of Germany and all the Jews that were fried or gas and those are just those are just two of the millions of examples of white racism that's all if you're white you're right then I know all about that because I'm a black man Larry I've been a slave and a [ __ ] for you for 400 years shine in your shoes cleaning your houses fighting your Wars for you to save your democracy your democracy not mine because there's no democracy in this country for black people Larry talk about the terrible terrible conditions of the concentration camps ever been inside of a ghetto but Larry the same kind of conditions exist there I'm talking about the Second World War I mean your your views are are very Illuminating now I don't know where you were in this class in your previous school but uh here we haven't come to the Civil Rights Movement all right go oh man this is some ways it's been a spring vacation but do you have the drop of a time man you know all right your Sleeping Beauties that's enough standing around let's take four laps okay another day like jadina may not live to see that division meet oh what are you gonna have huh well we're splitting this remember we're an Advertiser how about a butterscotch strawberry eggnog cherry banana marshmallows stick all that say hey what's happening yeah all right how you doing man what you got on your ankles it's a little bit of ankle weight five pounds worth on each side they uh you know you train with them you're lazy stronger you take them off you're 10 pounds lighter that's pretty good and you move oh yes you do that ain't black shoe polish you got on this man no man what you trying to say well man a month a little concerned about you spending so much time with the white boy over there man look man we just run track that's all man I can dig that but you spend so much time with that white boy you know taking a big chance there oh man they can't ain't nothing but a friend you know we just run away no no a friend no and you know what a friend is and a friend is a reflection of yourself the alter ego or mirror seeing your friend things you want to be like so what you're trying to say is that I want to be quiet you said it man look whatever reason is there look maybe I see something that uh maybe I see a good track man you know maybe that's somebody they can run fat I can do that runs pretty good yeah he does he runs pretty good for himself yeah he does pretty good he's running pretty good for his daddy don't you yeah you're a good slave one of you's got to be the master and one of you's got to be the slave and which one are you going to be yeah take it easy you're black Sonny [Music] Charlie stole it from the Indians and took us from Africa to slave in accord and he did the same thing with the Japanese the Chinese immigrants it was always the other races man hey man I know all the gifts what are you uptight about this yesterday talk about right now man you a deaf dumb and blind [ __ ] if you believe the white history books yesterday there listen yesterday is right now there isn't I'm not talking about something that ended and is not anymore you look at the Alaskan Eskimos who are losing their lands for oil companies now that's right now you look at the Immigrant Farm Workers the great Pickers you look at your brothers down the street ask them about they about the ghetto landlords and and education they can get in why these schools the jobs they can't get the food they can't get man you cannot make it in White America I can't hear you man you man you don't know what you're talking about I don't know what I'm talking that's why I look at the guys in sports what about the guys enjoy it yeah and they make it yeah and you will just be far out but why do you still have most of the black people on the foot you know now you've got to be aware of what's happening with black people before you can help them now how are you going to help black people if you don't know what they need man you get your degree you know and you get your position whatever that position may be Whitey is still going to look at you as another [ __ ] another black man now white is going to be sending you to school paying your way to have you run so I can get my architecture man but how are you gonna run and get your architecture degree when your classes are going to demand two to three hours a night on each one of them now look right now you've got wood shop and metal shop study halls you never got a book under your arm man How's that gonna change you get in college I have more of a day in the classroom what I'm I have any choice man because whitey will be Whitey's the one who's going to be deciding what you do man Whitey King look man track is only a Spring sport that's all just three months out of the year us man he'll have you running cross-country fall quarter working out with a basketball team winter quarter and then first thing spring forward he'd be jumping doing that 220 Blues Man [Music] imagine what happens to a black mind that wants to be in a white body and go to White places and do white things [Music] I don't want to see that happen to you man foreign it'll be a symbol pride and unity the black man who fought in the ghetto rebellions of the 60s were beautiful black Warriors in the war of Liberation oh man they were arsonists and looters that's all just taking our share I just don't think violence works the ones who use guns and Molotov cocktails were only hurting themselves Diane I don't believe there should be any peace for any man anywhere unless everybody can have it unless everybody can share it you don't have to have any fear what naturally happens tomorrow naturally happens I don't know man what's the point I can't see what the point is man the point is pride and the point is unity and you're going to symbolize that unity and that Pride when you get up there tomorrow and reject that white man's token and all your brothers and sisters will be in support of you and be right there with you tomorrow up there in the stands man showing that we are together because we don't need any more of why these little gifts his little token offerings to us for being good [ __ ] we don't need it we've got ourselves we've got each other man for my friends man the other guys on the team I just don't want to hurt them that's all I can dig your concern for your friends man but your friend will stick with you and he'll be tight with you and your brothers and sisters who knew you before you knew yourself will always be with you regardless of what happens tomorrow man we are too tight we don't need Whitey I'll think about it man I'm not sure but I'll think about it man okay man I know you'll do what's right thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right [Music] [Applause] [Music] winner of the 220 yard dash was a time of 21-9 hey man what happened huh [Music] hey uh listen um this may sound like it's none of my business or anything but well I'm still going to ask you well there's this word going around school the black athletes and the black students are going to demonstrate and uh well are you in on it I mean are you gonna do something look man you're risking a lot they start looking at you like a militant you'll probably lose your chance for a scholarship somewhere coach made him kick you off the team and what about Diana look man leave her out of this I appreciate what you're trying to do but this is my decision this is something I have to do yeah but it's also your chance for a college scholarship just forget it man just just forget it just go yard relay all participants should report to their position now come on Sunny man come once you can do it again [Music] that [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Applause] America [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yeah [Music] winning the 880 yard relay with a time of 1 minutes 30 and 110 seconds to the West Side higher [Music] ladies and gentlemen West Side highs relay team will now receive division meet first place medals on the Winner's platform [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] this next film is meant for even younger audience it's called tree house and it is it dresses directly um an issue that shows up with environmental protests uh and how a kid reconciles it it's a pretty great enjoy thank you foreign [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] Mike come on Mike get down Mike you'd better go home now Mike hey get down get down Mike it's coming down [Music] [Music] yeah so so great I mean it's all all this is pulled from the headlines it's basically looking at what was happening at the time and kids of course we're seeing this and television Etc and so the educational films sort of addressing that and kind of talking about that um this last film is it it's weird because it's an ad it's an ad for Arrow shirts uh and it is basically trying to sell Arrow shirts to hippies and Alternatives uh alternative people uh you know hey here's the arrow shirts that all the squares wear you can wear them too and like look look what we did we changed the collars and they're a little bit hipper I don't know anyways that's what this is now what's interesting about this film and I have shown this in the past uh is that the music it's gonna sound really familiar to you because it is written by the guy who later used that music in a musical that he did and I'm not going to give away what the musical is but you'll listen to it and go like wow that sounds like completely a rip-off of what song is that so uh watch and you'll see his name in the credits and he did this a year or two before the musical came out so he's like oh that's a catchy song I'm Gonna use that again um and I'm sure he was paid a lot by Arrow Shirt Company to write this song uh anyways here's a replay enjoy [Music] [Music] the children are confused not enough parent supervision to the younger generation I don't think they respect anybody yeah I don't understand them I had much more fun I had much more clean front wholesome and it was fun all the way through I don't consider it dancing at all I think it's just shaking your body [Music] [Music] I think they look very stupid didn't mean a boy and a girl they look unkept not to the shoulders they're not in curls it's just like a lion has a Mane they can't look like a man I don't like the long hair probably because I don't have any [Applause] quite a few good songs today popular songs but not the type that the Beatles or any of those uh organizations I've never liked them I understand they're supposed to be good musicians that was their saying as they call it today uh they had to have that long hair and something guitar to see to make a living [Applause] noise [Applause] I don't like the way out uh Fashions they don't send me very much oh they're crazy and I think it's about time that men started being more colorful and I think I'd like to move back the way it is now is different from the way it was before the way we live now is different we make love instead [Applause] [Music] all I know is there calling man everybody does this thing today but the way it is [Music] I'm not sure [Music] all right that's the way they want to grab I believe that the Bible gives us our social to prove worthy of the title of Miss America in 1935. it is second to the man that's always let the man be the head and lead the way and make the decision civilization has made a great mistake in giving the woman the right to vote it's fine if the woman feels they should be liberated the women left well I think they've had too much already but they like it they should be pushed out and made act like a man and take it like a man if she has no children then she should sort of take up some kind of a hobby and I present you with this scepter the movies I've got more Bolder when I was a kid you didn't see anything all you've seen was cowboy movies the movies that used to be underground of course are able to be put out on the main streets they're expensive uh they're in poor case pair with the classics of the past there's not a decent movie to see I remember the time uh we used to go to a theater there and half the theater used to cry because they they're uh well it's different now they're all more open and you know they're more to the fact let's face it next we can't see any of this self in the movies yeah I think there's too much pornography everything is sex today my grandmother wouldn't let me go out the corner look at one of the ass let alone go to the movies I I really think they're ridiculous they uh seem to emphasize sex a lot which is a normal thing and according to why I see things no we pull a good number of stunts ourselves but not to the extreme that the uh don't you hitting that down there until I'm ready children are going nowadays are you ready well we called fun in our time uh let it go it would
