so so so so so so so do do hi everybody welcome i'm skip alzheimer and this is the av geeks lunchtime streaming show hope everybody had a good weekend um we just watched some raw footage from coronet films uh these what they would do is they would shoot footage for a film that they were making and then whatever they kept is out they would just put together on these compilation reels which they called stock stock can libraries and so we watched kind of from three different ones and um yeah pretty great stuff beautiful beautiful kodachrome original camera material hadn't been run through a projector ever um really pretty stuff so a wide variety of different things and there's no sound that was recorded with this footage this sound was added later so excuse me so anyways um let's watch some more 16. this is uh ricky the baby monkey we're going to meet ricky the baby monkey body comfortable then we're ready to begin there are many different kinds of monkeys but ricky is a rhesus monkey from india now this is ricky's papa he just woke up and is looking around before he starts out for the day reese's monkeys are among the smartest and most mischievous of monkeys they have dark brown heads and their backs are chestnut color papa's going for a drink monkeys always drink when they wake up in the morning it must be a warm morning see how lazily papa walks you know monkeys use one watering place as long as they are feeding near it the leader picks the place and then all the other monkeys drink there too papa looks all around for danger before he gives a sign to his family to come down out of the trees well the coast is clear so back papa goes the same way he came and here's ricky with his mother sitting in papa's favorite rocker do you think papa is pleased watch out there ricky boys and girls can you do that no wonder people say climb like a monkey only we don't have tails to help us all these exercises and without a teacher too here in the jungle with enemies all around monkeys soon learn to take care of themselves papa has to find another place to sit but ricky is hungry he wants his breakfast roots are good but what is breakfast without milk well mother has some on hand and it's the best food of all for babies isn't it now papa wants to prowl around a little while everything is quiet in the jungle but what is this why he must be taking morning exercises too but this is a little mild after ricky's capers and a little goes a long way pop would rather just sit come ricky let's get down mother wants her breakfast careful not that way baby might fall isn't it funny how mother monkeys carry their babies he's clinging underneath with his arms and legs around mother's body see how tightly he holds to her fur what a ride mother sees something good to eat notice her hands almost like ours aren't they look at ricky he wants some of that delicious root mother is eating but she's hungry too looks like papa's hungry there must be something good to eat under this log perhaps some juicy grub but what's ricky up to now well he's found something to eat for himself mmm it must taste good he's not interested anymore in what mother wants to give him pop is ready to take another rest by the old log and there ricky goes running away from mother to explore the jungle by himself was that a bubble on the lead where did it go better watch out ricky you're all alone and there are many dangers in the jungle for little monkeys careful ricky where is he going he's wandering farther and farther away from mother does she know where you are little monkey now he's found a playmate look at them playing follow the leader around the old dog they look very contented they're sitting there in the sunshine ricky does everything his playmate does even though he's not nearly so big oh my there's a snake does papa see the snake ricky and his friend have forgotten to be watchful he plays with vines like girls play with jumping ropes watch out that snake is coming closer wake up papa those sharp teeth could protect the monkeys but papa just looks for a quieter place to sit he must have heard the snake coming through the jungle but rick he's paying no attention wouldn't he make a good gym teacher papa's settling down for a comfortable midday nap he doesn't see anything wrong and the little monkeys play on here's a big surprise they're looking for oh no it's not what you're thinking they're looking for salt salt forms in the fur of monkeys oh there's mr snake again but ricky's playmate is still looking for salt and cleaning and combing baby's fur ricky likes to be cleaned and combed do you mr snake is coming closer and closer ricky's playmate has heard something mr snake is very close now he's almost reached our little friends and look how big the monkey's eyes grow when he is surprised now the snake is under the very log they are sitting on ricky's playmate sees him and off he goes to a safer place ricky is all alone and there's a snake right below oh my this is no place for a little monkey not with mr snake right at the foot of the tree is he going to climb the tree jeepers this isn't good oh no he isn't going to climb the tree after all see there he goes slowly away into the jungle probably he wasn't really a dangerous snake after all but ricky's had quite enough adventure for one day he's going back to his mother as fast as he can here's the pool again but where's mother there she is somehow she seems to know that ricky has been in trouble he's all tired out after his adventure papa's awake again and he's hungry too down he goes for something to eat everything is quiet now and it's dinner time mother's eating too see the pouches on each side of her mouth she's stuffing them with food later she will climb into a tree to eat more safely papa has some tasty rushes to chew on of course he isn't in such a hurry to get back to safety in the trees he's big and strong enough to care for himself ricky's having dinner too like any youngster he is hungry when he comes back from play it's quiet and safe now in the jungle ricky has already forgotten about his adventure but we won't forget our little monkey friend will we oh ricky um so this was obviously made for young kids uh and you know young kids delight in seeing human-like creatures existing and doing things and creating parallels and thinking like i could i wish i could climb like that and oh i wish i could eat like that and things like that um really kind of fun uh the next film we have is actually on our oh boy tell us any um we have it set up and um it's a film called hitchhiking enjoy a lot of people give hitchhikers a lot of flack about how dangerous hitchhiking is and how they shouldn't do it but like that's one thing i feel really strongly about that um dangers everywhere we're living in a dangerous world [Music] too many things can happen to the person it can really last up their life you know well i really like hitchhiking because i don't have a car and that's the only way i can get around i don't know i figure i value my life too much to go get picked up by some stranger if i was hit checking the car stopped and i looked at the driver and thought well he's got a nice space and i guess i'll take a ride well i i wouldn't do that because they come in all kinds [Music] but like i've never had any bad experiences or anything you know i've always gotten really nice people pick me up and like the bit about judging people by what they look like if you're gonna hit you're taking a chance just hitching so it really doesn't matter like you know that that's just a chance you have to take so the only thing you can do do actually is you can't tell a person whether it's right or wrong but tell him the different situations that he can encounter i think if you're stranded out by a street or something you know when your car's in trouble or or smoking or something like that um i think the best thing to do is just wave somebody down and ask them to help you because i think you know most people wouldn't mind doing that and you can sort of tell you know like i've refused a whole lot of rides you can tell by people's eyes you know you open the door and you go forget it you know like sometimes not such nice things happen yeah people cruise the streets just looking for some kid to hitchhike and they pick him up i mean you know you don't know what's going to happen there's just that kind of deranged people around i probably end up walking it because i don't mind walking [Music] there was a girl on the papers on too long ago and they found her car gloves and her purse but her change purse was gone and her car had stalled the battery was dead or something they don't know what happened ago they still haven't found her but when you think about it chances are he was walking down the road wanted a ride from some guy and now they don't know where she is like i don't see anything really wrong with accepting a ride but the thing is that especially for a girl i think it's too dangerous like especially with that girl that just got picked up on the freeway i'd be too scared like i've been walking on the street and people come up to me and say you know do you want to ride and i just turn around and i say if i wanted to ride i'd have my thumb out like all my friends used to hitch and my mom would say i don't think you should but i did it a couple times anyway not because i wanted to but because my friends weren't going to take the bus and so i just sort of went along with them if my parents ever found out like it would everything would just end and like there's just so many people that could see me hitching and get back to my parents my parents found out and i got grounded well i did it because the group did it because i was curious and i don't think anything my parents would have said wouldn't stop me i know a lot of times like friends of mine reported that they've seen me hitchhiking but and i've seen them like they've gone by and it scared me because i didn't want them to tell my mom but they did well i'm careful who i get in the car was if i don't i it's just judgment if i don't feel like i'd be safe with some people i wouldn't take the ride you know that's a silly idea for someone to say well i can judge him by his looks because you can't you can't really make prejudgments because once we got in with somebody who looked really nice you know a man all dressed in the suit and you know he didn't want to take us where we wanted to go one time i was hitchhiking with a girlfriend of mine down laurel canyon and this guy picked us up and when it came time to get out of the car i got out and he took off with my girlfriend and pulled out a gun and she got afraid and impulsively she you know jumped out of the car she broke both her legs and has to learn how to walk again they say well you know be careful but you don't get in trouble with you know people that pick you up i've been hitching for four years you know people talk about bad experiences and nothing bad has ever happened adults you know try to tell you that it isn't good or anything but you know you've got to find out for yourself if you don't freak and you just be calm about everything usually nothing happens [Music] uh [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] all i do is just stand out on the on the side of the road with my thumb up you know to to make sure the people know that that you know that i'm hitchhiking that i'm not just standing there alongside the road picking my nose or something that i'm actually there to get a ride i feel you know much better when i take a ride with someone who's younger kids i think it's hard to check the people out before you know you get into a car with them every situation is different every person that picks you up is different and meeting people in general and meeting people hitchhiking there are really no set rules as to how you talk to somebody how you get along with them etc oh well i've done a lot of hitchhiking but to me hitchhiking is just like swimming you better do with a buddy or two or three and there's a lot of cases where there's a lot of crazy people running around in cars these days my parents don't know but i think they'd be upset if they found out from what i read in the paper and everything you know i found out that it's not too cool to hitchhike and you know my mother she told me you know about different things just happened to different girls and boys in the paper and i just can say it's not too cool to hitchhike you know well if you want a hitchhike it's at your own risk but it's safer to do if you're going to do it do it with somebody that you know that can handle themselves you know instead of pressing the panic button because so a lot of hitchhikers do they press the panic button and the whole scene goes sky high and usually if you're pretty cool you can handle the driver [Applause] [Music] okay [Music] do [Music] so [Music] well like once my mom asked me if i had hitchhiked and i hadn't so i told him she said well done you know and everywhere there's danger and hitchhiking is no more dangerous than anything else it's just an interesting way of meeting people when i'm hitchhiking i never think about anything but getting home well for me right now i have no other alternative but to hitch because i don't have that much money for buses and i can't keep depending on my mother friends to drive me around sometimes i have bad experiences that about 60 percent of the time they're mostly good i don't think that the police would be sympathetic because i don't think they really approve of hitchhiking you know i find a lot of policemen are against it because they're aware of what can happen to a hiker um they probably they see it more than the hitchhiker obviously i don't think i would ever outlaw hitchhiking but if you know people want to hitchhike them then they've gotta accept the um the punishment or whatever you wanna say they gotta pay to the piper kinda you know there's just that one chance that you're not going to get the ride that you thought you were [Music] i remember when i used to stand on corners the first thing that went through my mind was as soon as i get my car or anything i want to get people rides but i don't know if something happened as soon as you know i got my license i just didn't feel that way anymore you never know who's going to pick you who you're going to get in your car you're liable for them if you get into an accident they can sue you i think my father's insurance would cover me in any car i was in i used to pick up quite a few people when i first got my license then my father told me as long as you're driving one of his cars that i can't pick up anyone it's very easy for me to say don't hitchhike because i have a car and if you read about a rash of people or hitchhikers who are knocking off drivers you know would you want your kids to go picking up somebody like that you know somebody you know what you don't know i couldn't see it there's so many people that say hitchhiking is unsafe but then they won't give people rides if they really cared they would give those people a ride many of my friends have done nothing's ever happened to them hitchhiking is no more dangerous than anything else it's just an interesting way of meeting people you can tell by people's eyes you know sometimes i have bad experiences but about 60 percent of the time they're mostly good i feel that you know i don't want to do what the group does i just can say it's not too cool to hitchhike you know glorious cautionary tales um a couple of films about hitchhiking that uh all of them are in the 70s um and yeah mostly it's women talking about hitchhiking and the dangers of it because of all the increased sexual assaults um and um so yeah it's kind of fascinating all right what do we got here got so many films um this one is a film about marriage and like many of the films we have about marriage it's uh not necessarily a good marriage so let's see how they reconcile it's called just marriage and it's canadian larry's tongue is supposed to hang out a mile and joe's supposed to look green-eyed with envy the high school beauty queen still has to prove she's the honey that draws the beast well you didn't marry me for my housekeeping score one for your side look um larry and joe are sure to ask why we didn't make their wedding so what are we going to tell them why not the truth that you wouldn't let me buy a new outfit for the occasion because we couldn't afford it and you know it wouldn't be so bad if you'd settle for some reasonably priced dress but no no not the not the glamour queen she's gotta have the whole works purse shoes the hats the gloves and the dress oh don't be so uptight we have a tomato or something now remember if they asked us why we've been at the wedding we'll just tell them that we promised to spend the weekend with your boss and some other people okay okay well there's not much furniture yet but at least you don't have to sit on the floor i told joe all we needed was a couple of pillows on the floor i'd pretend i was the chic and she could be the royal favorite that she wouldn't go for punch anyone yes please thank you well here's to the newlyweds let's wait until the others are here and then we can all toast them together it's not much yet but joe and i figure we can pick up a chair here and a laugh there we've decided we want to get some good stuff so we're willing to wait until we have the money it'll take time but we weren't as fortunate as you were yeah we were pretty lucky all right sandy's parents are just great well they insisted on buying all our basic furniture and of course i didn't want them to but i'm getting along with them so well i could hardly say no yes they're just swell i guess we really aren't lucky to have them looking out for us [Music] yes yes mother of course no everything's fine we'll let you know if we can tell okay who is that now what does she want we want to know if we'd like to spend the weekend with him at the cottage and what did you tell him he said i'd ask you for god's sake can't we ever spend a weekend alone without your parents between your busybody mother trying to find out if i'm mistreating you and your old man who gives me advice and everything from how to handle my paycheck to changing the spark plugs in my car i'm going around the bench andy you didn't sound like that when they gave us the cheer you're sitting in we didn't even have much to say about that did we if i thought that a set of furniture would entitle them to run our lives i would have thought twice about jumping into holy matrimony you've sure changed your tune i'm sick and tired of your parents trying to run our lives sandy's parents have been a great help i don't know what we would have done without them everything's coming along i hope you like that i'm still practicing okay i'm joe i'm still practicing too larry and i have cut it pretty close on food thank goodness we both like casseroles and stew i try to plant meals so that we can use leftovers we had a stew last night that wasn't too bad if i do say so myself well aside from a little pain right about there with you get by that stage in a hurry [Music] when are you gonna learn to cook afraid you're losing your strength mr fullback i'm sick of tv dinners if i wanted frozen food i would have married an eskimo do you realize how much we spend for this food the least you can do is learn how to prepare it i do the best i can you've just been spoiled that's all i'm not the spoiled one the only thing your mother taught you to do is eat well why don't you cook the meals then you can eat well without spending a lot of money can't you i mean if you plan carefully and stick to a budget sure you can i mean it's just a matter of making the most of your money that's all if you have any problems joe just give me a ring i picked up a few shortcuts see honey they're making it but say we haven't seen much of you two in this last year since you've been married in fact well you know how it is larry after you're married your habits change we have to spend a lot of time with my customers entertaining and all that i never really knew how much time it took to be a good salesman it doesn't leave us much time to spend with old friends they'd really like to get together more often but you know what darn's going to get ahead but we never go anywhere it's all right for you that's the time you're out of town and even when you're in town you're practically never at home oh come on sandy you know i have to travel on my job and how many customers do i entertain downtown without taking you along oh big deal either i get to sit like a bump in a log well you talk business for hours or i wind up in a wrestling match with some creep who figures part of the business deal is a little fun and games with the salesman's wife well if you think that's my idea of a good time i've got news for you well you don't have to come along you know i mean you're the one that stays at home and squabbles about never going out i mean what is it with you anyway sandy what i said was we never go anywhere even on weekends you're off fishing with the boys at your boss's cottage or at my parents cottage and now you say you want to take a week of your vacation to go fishing so what's the matter with that why can't we just take a week off and go somewhere that's all because we can't afford it that's why you know i want to buy a new car darn we've been through this so many times before we don't need a new car the one we've got is only a year old yeah and it's a tub nobody drives a six-cylinder compact anymore i need something bigger something with more power someone will move out when i step on i got it picked out already a v8 with four on the floor we're hanging on to the money for that but we can forget it sandy a vacation is out and that's that what do you say andy hi marion sorry we're late larry i had to work oh that's okay this is not a big deal we were just sitting around talking come on man thank you would you care to sit here marion no thank you i think i'll just split up the ideal couple the ideal couple sure all these girls are so jealous that you read it we're the most popular girl in school then to top it all off you had to go marry the best looking boy in school or it just wasn't fair and he's just as good looking now must be nice to know that you've still got it watch it pal you better start getting uglier you're gonna have problems well you know how it is larry once you've got it i've been beating them off with brooms all my life really sandy everybody thought that it was just too much luck for one person hey sandy get out of the way are you gonna say glue to that set all weekend at least you could have done with shane oh come on sandy the lions are playing the packers they always put on a great show leave those things alone we're not going anywhere do we have to be going somewhere would you like another drink darling yes please thanks hun i certainly hope larry still waits on me like that after a year i think he's starting to slip already just look for the signs joe i'm sure larry is just as thoughtful when channel is dawn i'm thirsty too would you like to get me a glass of milk please what's the matter with you break your leg or something [Music] now that mary and anand you're here let's have that toast for the newlyweds i give you the grooviest newlyweds in town larry and joanne and may they live happily ever after or whatever you're supposed to do you know if it hadn't been for don and sandy we would have waited joe and i hope will be just as happy as you are [Music] yeah so this was part of a show that i did called marriage what kind for you and uh excuse me the uh most the marriages weren't doing so great um you know and marriage is hard my wife and i we we had to go through a lot to kind of figure ourselves out i think we got a good relationship um we spent 16 months with each other and then we spent two weeks like within three feet of each other and uh we did pretty good so it's but it's a lot of work all right this next film uh is part of the inside out series i've only got a couple more left um i don't have a complete set i've been kind of actively looking for them but i've got a lot of them and we've watched a bunch of them since mid-march so of last year so this one's called love susan and i think that see if i can fix this the following is from a national instructional television series the series and related materials were developed and supported by 32 educational agencies with additional support from exxon corporation [Music] so [Music] [Music] do [Music] it's almost finished do you think you'll like it oh sure he would let me see oh that's very nice do you really think he'll like it oh i know he will oh see it's so nice darling you love it do you think it looks like the photo just like the photo really fast if he likes it will he hang it in his office you'll want to show it to all his friends i gotta get it finished on time before he gets home he'd like that i think i hear dad [Music] dad's here i'm almost finished oh i can't wait till he sees it [Music] daddy daddy i'm so glad you're home i've got a surprise for you coming to the kitchen right now i want you to see it daddy's tired i've been working all day on this report [Music] that's the last straw get out get out i don't want to see it i don't want to see you get out of here get out get out go away [Music] he doesn't love me nobody loves me i'm gonna run away oh dear let me help well what was all the shouting about well your daughter knocked that report all over the living room floor that's what all the shouting was about well now nick she wouldn't do that on purpose he kept tugging at me and tugging at me ever been tugged at and i'm tired and i had i went to a traffic jam today i went through a report that is no good i've wasted my time and i'm tired and right now i just want to relax oh i'm sorry well didn't she tell you what she was so excited about didn't she yeah she said she had a surprise but i'm not in the mood for looking at a surprise okay honey i just want to sit here and relax she made something for you she's worked on a present for you every day after school for a week it's very important to her so maybe she can show it to me when i'm rested i exploded and i don't want to talk about it well it's as important to her as this report is to you you had a hard day would you like something to drink yes poor sandy i was mean to you the only reason i yelled at you because i was angry with dad i worked on that picture all day for him and then he didn't even look at it he just yelled at me because i knocked over his stupid papers but i won't ever do that to you again never i promise you know shandy i don't think my father likes me he's always telling me to trim the grass and wash the dishes i bet other girls fathers aren't that mean he never lets me go anywhere with my friends i think he's a stupid dummy i hope he goes away and never comes back honey what was that surprise susan had for me just a minute i'll show you this is the surprise susan had for you look at that it's pretty good yeah i really like it do you remember the photograph that she used do you remember that i sure do yeah that's better than the photograph oh she'd be happy to hear that you should tell her that i should have lost my temper you know what i know this meant so much to her nick she worked very hard on it and she hoped that you'd like it so much that you hang it in your office and show all your friends don't hang at my office oh she'd really like that nick i'm gonna go up and talk to her oh i think you should yeah susan are you in there susan i just want to talk to you honey are you in there i'd like to talk to you honey honey i'm sorry i lost my temper okay daddy's had a hard day i just want to talk to you susan i just want to talk to you honey susan i i saw the painting and it's beautiful it's lovely looks just like mommy and me and you it's really great i didn't mean to hurt your feelings i didn't mean to honey dad would you take shandy outside i think she needs to go for a walk honey are you hungry no well if you get hungry later come on down okay come on nick what happened well i told her that i was sorry for getting angry with her sorry i yelled at her she gives me the dog to walk oh for heaven's sake well what did she say is she coming down to dinner no she said she wasn't hungry oh no i'm going in wait uh let's give her a little time and then i'll go up and talk to her a little while later okay dinner's ready maybe it was all my fault maybe i did make a pest of myself daddy i want you to see it now you have to come now i'm asking you to come now and you won't answer me come now i want you to see the surprise [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] remember well what well you know that report that i was preparing for josh preparing for two months well it turns out that i was going in one direction and he was he was thinking in the internet complete waste of time and to top it all off coming home today i got into two huge traffic jams one i was in for about an hour oh got out of that drove for about 15 minutes got into another terrible it was just too much to take well this day certainly hasn't turned out to be the day i thought it would be either it just turned out to be one big disaster oh it really has been a mess it's such a nice picture she puts so much of her time into that picture this week she was so pleased at how well it was going together and she could imagine how well you would accept it do you remember that day yeah i do that was susan's birthday last year wow what a happy day that was yeah what a disaster today yeah i know i think i will go upstairs and get some knitting to do down here do you want anything no i'm just gonna sit in front of the fire inside out is a series of programs and related materials developed and supported by 32 educational agencies in the united states and canada with additional support from exxon corporation this program was produced by wnvt northern virginia educational television thanks everybody that was uh and thanks exxon for that wonderful uh family trauma of uh susan freaking out uh and then her dad freaking out and mom is the only voice of reason in a household gun mad um really those inside outs really resonate with me because i saw them as a kid and you know the kids in there are around within a couple years of how old i was so um all that nostalgia all that polyester all that um just kind of clicks with me um i only have a couple more inside outs to show i do have other um ones made by uh nit uh
