AV Geeks Lunch 8 2 2022

hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films um this is pre-recorded i'm not really where i appear to be this happens every once in a while in late july early august where i mysteriously disappear in uh because it's so friggin hot down here in north carolina that i try to find someplace uh that's more accommodating maybe deep underground that's where i might be i might be burrowing underground um but i still want to show you some films because we have so many to watch um so the this i don't know if this is going to ring a bell for you but let's watch it [Music] the cbs children's film festival presenting motion pictures from all over the world for and about children today the grand prize winner of the venice film festival testa de rapa [Music] your film festival hosts kukla fran and ollie so this was something that ran on cbs on saturdays and it was a um long show and i'm i'm looking here on wikipedia so i decently remember it because it started in 1967 and actually ran to 1984 um but i remember it like early on in my brain um and google fran and ollie were like um this woman in these two puppets that came from another show um i believe and what uh what's really interesting about this is this was an opportunity for kids to see foreign films to actually see [Music] these films that were featuring kids growing up and living in all these other places uh around the world and um so i remember these things and they resonate um and so one of the most popular ones of course is red balloon where a child is terrorized by a red balloon and then his friends thankfully save him from the red balloon but then the red balloons exact their revenge that's not exactly how it works but it's a sweet story almost all these films have no narration or they're dubbed and i have quite a few of these in my collection and so this is one that's longer uh and we're showing it because i'm out of town but uh it's still pretty great uh and it i feel like distantly i remembered it but it's called a boy with glasses and it's japanese and we got it threaded up threaded up on the old telecini or i'm sorry the film scanner behind me so let's watch a boy with glasses enjoy do foreign uh [Music] uh [Applause] um [Music] you [Music] you want to play tag do you know why mother was at school today no wait have your grades going down this year well no about the same and i don't know why okay see you later you're late do you have your grades ah you didn't throw them at me he can't see the letters on the blackboard clearly excuse me and sometimes he has trouble on the playground susumu is sensitive about playing with other boys because he can't keep up with him too well yes he was always shy yes would you say he's been unusually disturbed what is he like when he's at home is he quiet there he knows something's wrong but he may not be aware that his eyesight is becoming weaker i understand you were widowed i did marry again well that's fine and his new father do they get on well together yes although they have never talked together very much but i see how hard he tries to reach out to the child he's a good husband and father he was widowed too and brought his own son akira to live with us feel good ready what's wrong with you you know you should wash your hands like your brother excuse me i'm not sure it's wise to compare the two boys susumu is still but akira is young a nice obedient young man smells good tonight i'm hungry is it true that you were visiting our school today yes i spoke to your teacher and he tells me you're having trouble seeing the blackboard he wants me to take you to the eye doctor tomorrow for glasses for glasses oh so that's where he asked to see you it'll take me a while to get used to seeing you with glasses susumu i'll bet you at school this will make you a hero or at least very famous you'll only be the second person in the whole school to have them you know they'll help you to get much higher grades in school everything will be clear and besides there's no reason for you to be ashamed of wearing them you must never be ashamed of anything that helps you do your work better i have worn these dark glasses ever since my eyes were injured at the foundry many years ago so we're proud you've done as well as you have we should have realized your problem sooner but now as soon as you start wearing your new glasses they may let you be a class monitor like your brother [Music] [Music] um [Music] lady had never heard of azu but she trustingly followed along and did just as a told her to until they were safely passed with no dog signs strolling down the sunny paths inside the past will change so listen to this mother told us all at dinner tonight that today she saw susumu's teacher he told her that she had better go to see an eye doctor and get glasses for susumu but my brother isn't very happy but later on when he understands that wearing glasses can help his work in school he won't feel so bad father says he shouldn't be ashamed to wear glasses he's right no matter what the other kids in school say the only thing that matters is the silver [Music] what what's wrong hey let go of it [Music] oh [Music] listen i told you to give me back my diary didn't i i'm your big brother now here you should do as i say i do not who says so anyway yes you do if you want to learn anything you better remember where you are you know sometimes i wish my father and i were still living alone in this house [Music] sorry i didn't mean it i didn't mean it father [Music] so [Music] so hey it's late come on it's late what are you doing come to breakfast i'm just trying to access some more never mind get dressed and eat susumu's not going to school today he's not for freezer i'm going to take him to the doctor he's going to get his glasses today huh [Music] good morning you're with your son today yes it's right [Music] going to town well [Music] [Music] ah this is hashimoto how are you i am well i haven't seen you in a while harry's too soon [Music] i'm on my way to see your husband is he at home yes why is something wrong on the contrary [Music] [Applause] we'll pay a bonus if you can deliver on time it's not that but to enlarge the shop oh now it costs money we know that well i like the things you handle so i intend to give you the money to enlarge it why not think it over and let us know [Music] i think the doctor's down this street right here this is it come inside hmm [Music] [Music] good [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] blue [Music] but i can't see [Music] but i can't see the vertical and the horizontal lines do they look the same yes uh [Music] all right we see here try these ah susumu try them on go on are you just going to stand there all day go on you're acting foolish stop it [Music] how do they feel susumu i guess they feel strange how much is that yes that's 650 embryos and here's a case for your son you're going to be so glad here put them away now [Music] [Laughter] [Music] akira there's your brother yeah be right back [Music] have you got that [Music] look at that he's all dressed up where was he in town getting glasses ah i'll bet he looks funny but he does [Music] hey let's get him huh not me akira will get us [Music] 650 yen that's a lot of money here let me try them on [Music] i can't see anything where are you done okay it's new offer you find it interesting yes it does we might increase our income a bit business is so poor and then i might not have to wear my dark glasses anymore the work is less demanding i think that susumu might like that huh i think these glasses bother him he's shy with me oh stop worrying i understand him these glasses come between us oh that's not true he wants extra attention that's all no a boy thinks differently from an adult all he needs right now is a real father and if i am very careful i think i can get through to him i hope that susumu likes me a little i do like him [Music] why is it that you never work with your glasses on i think you should try getting used to them did your teacher give you a project for the summer yes i have one you know what i'm making a boat i'm carving it out of wood i'm making a small rock garden that was the one i did last year the teacher liked it can i give you a hand no thanks i will need any help any graph paper graph paper i have some father i have to draw a plan for altering the store here what are you making it's not finished yet look at that why are your eyes watering where are your glasses oh i don't always need to weigh them you know what father says he doesn't need to wear his glasses but that's not true you know it's because of you he believes they make you shy away know what he does he puts his glasses on when you're gone [Music] [Music] yes [Music] it's hot today [Music] would you like something to drink oh stop dear that today is the last day of summer vacation we go back to school tomorrow today i studied with my glasses on and everything seems so much easier maybe the teacher was right maybe i will get higher grades if i work with my glasses but i i still don't like to wear them when other people can't see me i am scared to weld him to school tomorrow the class might laugh at me and say things i hope [Music] one two three four one two three four one two three four one two three four one two so may i ask you where are your glasses i forgot them today i remind you every day i think that makes four days in a row now i want you to go home and bring them yes sir i want you to tell me why do you think susumu forgets his glasses every day i think he's shy why is that he's afraid he might well that he'd be teased i see tell me now class have any of you had a similar experience i have stand i always flush when i have to wear my sunday clothes really you should feel proud i guess so only it makes me feel like a lady anyone else teacher yes i'm the only boy in school who has to wear cloth gloves everyone else has other ones but you wear them because your mother works hard and makes them for you and i have my orders from my father [Laughter] but i believe we all respect our parents yes poor susumu he's been forgetting his spectacles because he thinks that you're all going to laugh now then would good friends do this all right children i'm going to ask a favor now when susumu puts on his glasses don't look at him can i count on you yes yes i was sure you would all agree the rest is up to susimo he must learn to live with his new glasses right do you agree [Music] thank you [Music] look that boy is akira's brother i hear he wears glasses hey junior where are your glasses why don't you put them on hey going to be a professor stop him where do you think you're going i'd like to see them go on try them on that's right where are they in there they're in your pocket [Music] don't forget wash your hands stand bow last night i was reading your summer diaries most wrote a little every day and there are some who wrote the entire book the last day of summer vacation i can tell which they are now as to your hobbies your projects turned out well i think i'm pleased and later today we're going to put them on display shall we yes hand these out hiyoshi [Music] correct all mistakes in spelling [Music] it's awesome [Music] so [Music] [Music] you glasses make you look smart don't you i never heard of a fourth grader who was smart he thinks he's important because his brother's a class monitor hey specs you ought to wear your glasses all the time you look good yeah real good why don't you get some dark glasses so you can look like your father huh yeah why don't you hey specs father's baby boy hey daddy's boy you're watching ross is just like daddy aren't you don't you like your glasses what's the matter daddy boy you can't talk daddy's boy daddy's boy daddy's boy [Music] oh my god [Music] hey [Music] oh [Music] hey want to hit someone hit me i'm your size [Music] what are you waiting for try it [Music] so [Music] so soon you did all right are you proud of yourself i don't think they're going to tease you again ah let's go [Music] they get along so nicely i'll take this i think your new store is very lovely i guess you're proud i am yes you know what hmm teacher said suzuma's little garden was the best one in the whole class hmm oh wonderful and you put on your glasses today makes you look like a scholar [Laughter] he deserves a special treat hey it looks great you know better than that akira wait a minute [Music] what a catch that's great [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] greatest film um you know it resonates um for anyone who had to wear glasses the funny thing is that my story is that i needed glasses in college and my grades were beginning to slip and i was having problems with studying and stuff and i was like oh my eyes were always tired couldn't see the uh blackboard um same thing and you know so part of it was the brain your brain uh and emotions getting used to having glasses and uh now i've got trifocals i got transitions you know i need the things for my eyes so thanks for
