famous tv star no kidding yeah well let me take it around the block once or twice just excellent hello oh i wish i could mac but uh i can't new insurance law you see uh if you should happen to hit somebody i mean we'd be in real trouble look if you like the car why don't you just sign the contract then you'd own it and you could drive it all you like yeah but she's in great shape a real cream puff yeah and if you should happen to have any trouble with it well uh we'll split the repairs with you 50 50. 50 50. well that sounds like a good deal it's a steal look i got a guy right now with all cash just dying to buy this car but uh i'm partial to you service guys you know used to be one myself now this is the kind of car that a guy like you ought to have look why don't you just sign right here and she's all yours 200 down the balance over the next 18 months you won't even miss the money marine you have just made a very foolish mistake [Music] um [Music] so [Music] so [Music] but i don't want to talk to you i want to talk to the man that sold me the car oh you see i'm sorry about that uh uh the guy who sold you the car he doesn't work here anymore he doesn't well i bought it this morning and there's something wrong with it look this car was in beautiful shape when we had it now we can't be responsible for what's happening after you've driven it yeah but the man who sold me the car said that you'd pay for repairs 50 50. 50 50. did he tell you that that's why we had to get rid of them i mean promising things like that it's against company policy now our contract reads you buy them as is but this man says the transmission's bad and the engine needs overhaul and they're expensive to fix look i'm sorry you got a problem but we can't help you now uh would you mind getting this wrecker off the line it makes a bad impression i'll tell you what you take the car back we can't do that well then i'm just gonna leave it here and i'm not gonna give you one red cent more and i want my 200 back oh want to play rough huh well let me tell you something you signed a contract to buy that car so it's yours you also signed a note to finance the balance due and you better pay it or you're going to be in for some real trouble but bought nothing now you've got yourself a commerce and i'm telling you get off this lot right now or i'm going to call the cops nuts yes maureen you have made a very foolish mistake and unfortunately you're going to have to pay for it just as many other servicemen are paying for similar foolish mistakes they've made i was cheated that's what i was the world is full of people who will take advantage of you and it seems that the serviceman is their favorite prey i don't know why i just couldn't let them take back the car you know just sorted a square thing there were two reasons why you couldn't two pieces of paper you signed one is a contract you didn't read agreeing to purchase the car as is from the used car dealer the other is a loan agreement to pay for the balance of the purchase price no matter what happens to the car you still have to repay the money you borrowed oh me i never did understand things like signing contracts and borrowing money and all that you're not alone managing money can be a very confusing and difficult matter for anyone you'd be surprised how many servicemen get themselves into difficulty because of unwise buying practices [Music] some buy things on impulse they use charge accounts as if what they were buying were free happy birthday to you happy birthday to you happy birthday dear florence happy birthday to you george you know it's not my birthday for another six months well happy on birthday then i just bought this for you because you're so nice george where did you get the money for that tv set i charged it love was such a bargain it was on sale and i just couldn't resist it merch how could you you know we can't afford it i know you want a tv set in the bedroom but we just can't afford this one we still have 15 months to pay the one we got last year if george had had enough cash to pay for that second td set chances are he'd never have bought it instead he let himself get carried away with an impulse credit purchase and has taken a step toward financial difficulty but it's not only husbands who are tempted into foolish buying practices many wives get caught up in department store revolving accounts and find themselves in perpetual debt [Music] dan what's with this 30 dollar charge this month you know i've only been paying 20. well you know the other night when we had the cookout i was so embarrassed when we had to set up those card tables i just about died so i saw this terrific outdoor table yeah but why didn't you come and ask me first well it's only ten dollars a month more we can certainly afford that yeah but by the time we get this one paid off you'll go out and buy something else and we'll never get out of debt all credit purchases should be paid within a definite period of time revolving charge accounts are very convenient but it's awfully hard not to keep using them especially on purchases that aren't really necessary the result future income is obligated for months or even years of course buying things that aren't really necessary is a major problem for most people you're a natural-born dancer [Music] oh that's okay oh you're catching on very fast oh all you need to do is um develop your natural talent you were excellent with a few more lessons you'll be dancing just like a professional here's the contract i was telling you about one third off if you sign up tonight and you're on your way on his way is right that contract commits him to months of dance lessons that will cost him hundreds of dollars self-improvement courses are fine if you can afford them unfortunate the mind of the victim [Music] hmm i'm in pretty good shape already fella i can tell even with that uniform on but six months of our bodybuilding program and you'll be absolutely gorgeous and working out here is sure better than spending your time and money in some dirty old bar come on sign the contract the sales pitch is always convincing but that contract is loaded with expenses and anyone who signs it better be sure he can afford it and that he really wants to see the program through to the end once he's signed he's committed many people end up paying for mail order lessons they never finish hey rembrandt here's this month's bill for that stupid art course you signed up for what does that leave us now 21 more payments many young couples have been talked into expensive sets of encyclopedia far in advance of when they might ever need them you bought them for the kid harry by the time our kids are old enough to read these books are going to be ancient history i'm not even pregnant there are people who have made the mistake of using credit to buy costly items from door to door salesman [Music] what a mess you got us stuck with a vacuum cleaner we don't need the miserable thing doesn't even work then the salesman's probably miles away by now there are many different selling gimmicks to trap people into overspending the easy credit trap of no money down and months to pay has left many marines with expensive suits and sports jackets they don't need and monthly payments they cannot afford remember you are never better dressed than when in uniform but buying used cars seems to get servicemen into the most trouble hey charlie look at this transmission fill this sawdust that's the marines car isn't it boy how can a guy be dumb enough to buy a used car from a place like he did without getting it checked out by a mechanic first yeah with this transmission job and engine overhaul he's going to be out nearly 300 bucks and he only bought it this morning yeah you can avoid trouble when you buy a used car by shopping at a reputable dealer but even here it's a good idea to get an expert's opinion of the condition of the car first get a mechanic you can trust to check over the car before you buy it there's always someone in the motor pool who will help you his know-how can save you many headaches and considerable money later of course you should never sign the contract or any contract without reading it carefully and knowing what is in it it doesn't matter whether it's a contract for a used car or a series of dancing lessons or a house full of furniture not reading and understanding what is in it can cause you a lot of trouble in every case check out a contract with your legal assistance officer before you sign it he can alert you to possible problems [Music] this contract has one catch sergeant it says you must pay the balance in full before you leave the area how long do you expect to stay in the area my turn is up in two years sir and you want to pay for this furniture over a 36 month period if you sign this contract you'll be obligating yourself to pay for the balance in full in cash before you move do you understand that i understand that sir now if you do that your legal assistance officer is glad to help you it's his job don't complicate things for yourself by signing any contract until he sees it and be doubly sure never to sign a blank contract that's a quick way to wind up in real trouble perhaps the most important contract you will ever enter into is the marriage contract most servicemen expect to marry but you should ask yourself is this the right time can i afford marriage now can i support a wife and perhaps a family if i do get married will my wife have to work if so will the kind of job she can get lead to personal difficulties will she be happy far away from home living on or near a military base would it be better if i waited till my tour is up [Music] you know what assad always says if the corps wanted me to have a wife they'd issued me one well the sarge is a man of experience he knows the problems young service couples can have both financial and personal one of those problems concerns another important legal document the power of attorney this lets a wife make financial commitments without the husband's knowledge what do you think we're gonna do with it i think it's going right back where it came from we can't afford it can't afford it came free with a freezer for you with the freezer this thing's nothing but a piece of junk and you'll find a note to pay 600 for it well look if you don't like what i buy why did you give me power of attorney i wish i knew all major buying decisions should be made by husband and wife together even if the husband is overseas he can usually be contacted quickly to participate in the decision so a general power of attorney is unnecessary boy i sure didn't know there were so many ways to get into finance trouble it all comes about when people forget that there are many many demands for their money and they must use good judgment in how they spend it look at it this way everyone should decide what he wants out of life set some goals for himself goals you mean like completing your education when you get out of the service eating a good job yes and making plans for getting married and starting a family yeah and raising the kids and taking them on trips and sending them to college and then maybe retiring and taking it easy that's right all this takes money enough for you to have the things you will need enough set aside through insurance and savings so you don't have to worry about the future enough for doing the things that are fun chances are your goals will always require more money than you have at any given time but they give you something to plan and work toward no matter how much money you earn you should budget it so you know exactly how much you have to spend after essentials are taken care of for example suppose a family earns 500 a month gross income after deductions for social security and federal income tax they are left with a net of 450 then they have other essential expenses that must be met each month housing food [Music] clothing and transportation now they're left with two hundred dollars but they must consider such things as insurance cleaning and repair entertainment and savings too ideally about 10 of income that leaves 80 for buying the extra things they need or want they can't let their purchases exceed this figure or they're in trouble this isn't easy no matter how much a person earns that's why credit is used by so many people to help them buy the things they need today with the money they will earn tomorrow you mean it's okay to use credit after all i mean after hearing about all those financial troubles other servicemen got into i i felt kind of guilty about signing that agreement to buy this car as my daddy always used to say don't spend it if you ain't got it but using credit wisely is an important way of extending the money you have credit plays an important part in most people's lives in fact a good credit rating is one of the greatest assets you can have a department store charge account is another form of credit it usually requires full payment every month the problem comes when people forget to plan their purchases in advance and the total charges exceeds the income they have left over at the end of the month another form of credit is used by many people to buy big items like large appliances or cars almost no one can pay cash for them so they pay for them in installments plus an interest or service charge on the unpaid balance again they have to be sure their monthly installment payments are within their budget well that's the kind of credit i got buying this car and i do have enough money left over to make the payments well that's good yeah but i don't have any money left to get the car fixed every cent i had went for the down payment and now the repair shop says it's going to cost 295 just to make it run right is there any way i can borrow this well there is a third type of credit consumer or personal cash credit it allows people to borrow money to meet unexpected emergencies to make worthwhile purchases or to meet other financial obligations personal loans may be available from banks credit unions or consumer finance companies these organizations have no product to sell so they evaluate their clients ability to repay the loan good character and a reputation for financial stability are the qualities they seek for these are their only assurances the loan will be repaid a charge is also made for this form of credit say yeah sure i'm glad you mentioned this consumer credit maybe a personal loan is the answer to my problem you'd have to pay it back and i thought you couldn't afford any more payments yeah well maybe i think it's time you got some advice from your legal assistants officer before you get deeper into financial difficulty private under these circumstances i'm afraid no loan company is going to lend you the money you're simply a bad risk yes sir now i'm afraid you're gonna have to chalk this one up to experience maybe we can get the car dealer to take the car back but you know you're gonna lose money on it don't you it's better than nothing sir it's a tough way to solve a problem i know but the next time you get a car go to a good car dealer bring it to a mechanic let him check it out and then bring the contract back to me and let me see it before you sign it okay so they bought it back from you huh yep for a lot less than i paid for it at least this check will help me pay off the note i signed i sure wish that bus would come you've learned a lesson or two from this experience haven't you you bet i have i've learned everyone ought to have goals and he ought to use his money to help achieve these goals then everyone ought to itemize his income and find out how much money has after essentials to help achieve these goals of course you got to make sure you don't spend more than you have and that's where the wise use of credit comes in to extend the amount of money you have in order to enjoy things now and pay for them out of future income how am i doing so far so good but you gotta watch out for credit it's a great convenience and having a good credit rating is one of the greatest assets you can have but credit obligates your future income use it unwisely and you can be in financial trouble for months or years i you have to be sure the ease of credit doesn't tempt you into buying more than you can afford you gotta avoid buying things you don't need when you do buy it should be from a reputable merchant you should never sign any contract until you understand what's in it make sure anything the salesman promises you is included let your legal assistance officer go over it with you and you should think twice about getting married before you are ready for it financially i guess it all boils down to this wise money management is many things using good common sense not getting overextended looking at the full price of every item you want to buy as if you're going to buy it with cash right and be sure to include the cost of financing because borrowing money costs money yeah but how do i know how much it'll cost the place you borrow from is required by law to tell you the interest rate be sure they do well that sounds like good advice oh here comes the bus back to the base well it's been a rough day but you can be sure i'll never do anything foolish again come on i forgot i didn't have any money only this check well i guess i'll walk back to the base [Music] hey everybody welcome i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show that last film was a 16 millimeter film called a full in his money made by the marine corps so we live in raleigh north carolina that's where av geeks is based and we would always go to um fayetteville when we were looking to buy musical instruments because we knew that pawn shops were filled with guitars and basses and keyboards and stuff and basically what the situation was is like somebody a marine would like get super excited with his first couple of paychecks and he would spend it on some musical equipment and then realize he didn't have the time for it or the interest for it so then he would pawn it and then so all the pawn shops were glut with like all this equipment so it was a place that we could go and we could buy stuff um because marines were so eager we were so excited to get like a regular paycheck that they didn't have to pay for you know living expenses mostly and they could go spend it on stuff like this so um and driving to fayetteville where fort bragg was based there was all sorts of these like places these pawn shops and these these places that were trying to appeal to uh new marines so this is it still goes on today uh very much so marines are always being taken advantage of uh well just anybody in the military active military you have this concentration of young people who are excited to have money and people trying to capitalize on that so that has not changed um so thank you kevin for money for coffee um i needed it um so i did a show on friday after spending three hours uh unloading what we think was pretty close to thirty thousand pounds of film um i have very little recollection of what i showed so thankfully i wrote it down because i was like wait did i share this film i can't remember um but anyways i got a we got a giant batch of films from cornet films in st louis and we'll be watching those for a while for the next couple of years probably um but we'll also be mixing in other av geeks uh held titles um like this last one that we just saw i'll try to mix it up a little bit um but this next film is timely because for many people in north carolina it's back to school for their kids and back to school doesn't mean the same as it normally does um in north carolina most people are virtually going back to school so this is a film that was shown to new junior high students to kind of tell them about like what's the difference between the school you were just in and how we do things here in junior high so this is called your junior high days [Music] it's a big step or rather a lot of different steps you take when you make the change over from elementary school to junior high so much is different here in this new school that many young people need help in getting off to a good start in the next few minutes we're going to turn a lens on this institution called junior high to see which steps can help you get off to a good start the thing anyone notices on the first day at junior high is people lots and lots of people getting used to the fact that you are one among many and what that will mean to you is a part of making a good start and what does this much larger group mean to you it means happily that you will have many more opportunities to make friends than you had in the elementary school it also means that you will be included in something big a school with its own traditions its own teams its exciting long time rivalries with other schools for academic as well as athletic superiority you'll probably have your own cheerleaders wearing your school colors and maybe you'll even wear those colors yourself as you share in the fun of singing your school song or urging on the team with your school cheers but being a part of a much larger group also means that the competition will be tougher if you've been tops in your class before it can be a joke to discover that there are other people who are smarter or more attractive or more popular or more skilled than you are and if you haven't been particularly outstanding before it may be discouraging to find out how many more there are ahead of you now than there used to be but remember you are still you with the same abilities you had before in junior high there will be more competition for everything athletics scholarship friends and even for class offices where only one can win what you have to do in the face of this increased competition is hang on to your self-respect in some areas you may never be tops in others you may have to work hard to make a good showing nevertheless you are worthy of respect from yourself as well as others and more so if you face up to your limitations another thing you must do when the competition is increased is to become more responsible it's up to you now to get your assignment straight and not depend on the person beside you it's up to you to keep track of your gym clothes your books and your other possessions it's up to you to get to class on time prepared for the test or whatever else the teacher has said the period will be devoted to since you have a different teacher for every class it's up to you to look out more for yourself your teachers will not be able to spend as much time with each student as they did in elementary school when the day is over there won't be anyone who has been watching over you every hour to remind you that you better give some extra time and thought to a certain subject no your schoolwork in general and your homework in particular become your responsibility this is your chance to show that you are growing up and can accept responsibility going to junior high may also mean greater freedom than you've ever had before school is often farther from your home than ever before there is more time for you to be on your own and more chances to prove you're able to take care of yourself within certain limits the greater freedom of junior high will allow you to choose some of the subjects you will want to study but a word of caution here the course and the electives you will choose can have far-reaching effects on your future studies and even on what kind of work you do when you leave school you can get helpful advice from your school counselor who is anxious to talk with both you and your parents about a choice of courses and any other problems you may have and speaking of problems they're bound to come up maybe you have to check out a certain book or magazine from the library and you've never been taught or don't remember exactly how to go about finding it don't feel shy about asking for help ask the librarian to show you how to use the library i'm supposed to use the magazine index but i don't know where it is well tommy let me show you where it is maybe you've been given your first big reading assignment and you discover that you read too slowly to get all your outside reading done tell the reading specialist or your teacher you shouldn't be ashamed if you have a reading problem you only hurt yourself if you let it go on when there's help available maybe your best friend of elementary school days has taken up with a new crowd and you feel left out and lonely if this is a problem for you take a look at yourself to see why you're left out usually people group together because they have common interests if they have a common interest in talking about popular singing stars and that's not for you be yourself find out what is best for you broaden your interests develop a variety of interests and you will gradually become a part of a new group of friends you'll find many opportunities to develop new interests here at junior high maybe on the school paper staff or in the marching band or the orchestra or the photography club these and other extracurricular activities are open to people with common interests among people who like the same things you like you can make new friends friends are made remember there's no such thing as a magnetic personality which attracts others without effort but there are people who make the effort to introduce themselves there are people who make the effort to learn other people's names and use them so that even a quick greeting has a personal ring to it [Music] there are people who make the effort to go along with their friends in what they do what they wear and the way they talk and these are the people who usually earn a reputation for having that magnetic personality which is incorrectly thought to be an effortless thing of course nothing smooths the way for a good start like knowing the rules and regulations which apply in this new school here's where your handbook comes in study the map or the directions for getting to your classrooms read the school rules isn't it silly to get in trouble over an unexcused absence when the rules plainly tell what is expected of you why run the risk of being caught without a hall pass when the rules show you how to get permission to be in the hallways during classes how are you going to know cafeteria rules whether to bring your lunch or buy it unless you've read the handbook or listen to the teacher when she was telling you or asked someone the point is make sure you know what the rules are finding out the rules and following them is just common sense so is setting up goals for yourself at this stage in your development setting up goals means planning for your junior high years a well-balanced program of study work and play no matter what job you do after high school you will need to know how to work and get along with others you will need to believe in yourself and what you can do you will need to be an intelligent citizen in selecting subjects in junior high you should consider your talents interests and abilities those subjects which give you the most satisfaction may prove to be a lifelong hobby or more important they may become the basis of a vocation in any case making the most of an opportunity you have now will serve you well make the most of junior high this is a goal for you make the most of your chances to work with others in a group make the most of your opportunities to acquire information and self-discipline through study and homework make the most of your chances to have a good time with all kinds of people and by all means make the most of that source of information and sympathetic understanding the teacher teachers like you or they wouldn't be teaching they will help and encourage you if you give them a chance and if you show them that you are willing to try in focusing on this institution called junior high we have called attention to only one area which is spelled out in your handbook the rules and regulations learning them is one step in getting off to a good start another step is to prepare yourself for increased competition both by learning to live with the idea that others can be better than you are in some things and by making yourself as good as you can possibly be you can do this by becoming more responsible and realistic about yourself learn to see your own weaknesses and do what you can to correct them another big step in getting off to a good start is making as many friends as possible and that means making friends with your classmates and making friends with your teachers and the other adults at school thinking of them as people with families and interests and problems just like you however the most important idea of all is to set for yourself the goal of making the most of every opportunity to work to study to have fun do just a little bit more than you think you can and you will be off to a good start [Music] so many instructions and i'm sure it was like shown on the first day of school or maybe if somebody was proactive they like would go to the uh i don't even know what junior high is anymore i i've there's so many variations on i did not have junior high when i went to school i was basically k through eight uh in rural north carolina um but uh yeah maybe they go the the year before and say like this is what is going to happen when you go to junior high but um fascinating i love this is part of a show i did call rules for schools and uh basically it was you know rules of all the rules associated with school and there's a bunch um all right this uh next film i didn't change the title of it let me change it real quick um it's oops hold on it's have a wonderful evening and i think if i remember correctly it's a film for babysitters on fire safety so enjoy [Music] and see what happens um because i can't just leave you not knowing what happens in this amazing film of where a girl has lost her sense of smell and doesn't quite get the fact that there's a smoldering couch in the house all right um so this next film is uh a salesman film it's uh goodwill ambassador let's take a look at what wraps up the completely successful sale it's good when a customer is sold when the customer buys they're elegant you just love them and look at this isn't this a perfect gift for bill i'll take it's even better when a customer is sold all she needs and wants in both quantity and quality that's a good idea [Music] all right you've sold me i'll take the blue one and the black also we have some beautiful italian handbags that just came in i think you'll find them very unusual they're right here let me show you one for a sale that's 100 successful a customer must be sold on more than just the merchandise she must be sold on the store on the department [Music] and on you she must be sold every moment by the atmosphere of the store the attitude of the store people then she'll be sold on coming back and that's the deepest measure of success in professional selling [Music] let's play a little game and just sit back and try to become completely absorbed in this scene feeling relaxed peaceful [Music] feeling a little irritated or maybe amused [Music] how does this make you feel [Music] now let's see how a change in climate can affect you obviously your mood can be affected very quickly by what you experience at any given moment people are a big part of your day-to-day experience they too create a rapid impression produce a fast reaction invoke a frame of mind so to speak in a flash an expression on someone's face can create a whole new climate of feeling [Music] the point of course is that sales people make an instant impression on a customer how do you react to miss hodges no nothing in that color or how do you feel about jim no we've never had a wallet like that ours don't have any elaborate decoration of course jim could have said but we have so many beautiful wallets i'm sure we can find something that's just right for your husband from cold to chilly to warm we sales people set the climate control every moment the customer is in the store let's see what makes a warm climate in the store don't you think it has a lot to do with a warm personality genuinely trying to help isn't it a matter of the warmth and the spirit of the relationship across the counter the warm personal service actually the key is service the friendly gestures that are welcome anytime during the sale service is a big part of building goodwill and when goodwill is lost all is lost such service includes things like checking on delivery dates offering gift wrapping and thank you mrs logan now i'll tell you exactly when this will be delivered you'll receive it on thursday would you like the attitude case wrapped as a gift suggesting personalizing of purchases is another example of extra service wouldn't you like your husband's initials on this wallet i can have it done right away or showing real interest in the customer's interest i'll give you this booklet put out by the manufacturer how to get the most mileage from your luggage lots of good ideas saving wear and tear on the customer you have so little time before you leave on your trip don't forget about our personal shoppers they can save you so much time and trouble expressing a desire to continue to satisfy the customer i'd like to give you my card even better but is she so satisfied with her purchases so pleased with the way she was treated like a guest of the store that she's sure to return to a mrs marlow a mr edwards or to you if you sell each day to more customers if you sell more to each one who buys if you sell more customers with the old-fashioned virtues of friendly helpful service more and more customers are bound to come back to you only then are you a goodwill ambassador building loyalty for yourself and for your store only then are you a person-to-person selling professional [Music] all right i think you got it um so i don't know if you noticed like that goodwill ambassadors there were some common actors from those management films that we've shown um the ones made by calvin and this was another uh calvin production uh and so there's some women that were in there that were shoppers who were girls and also uh men who were management people or people that were a problem uh in those management films so calvin did a lot of industrial stuff uh there was another film i showed last week uh called help yourself to us uh to a smile and that was also had some calvin people in it uh and i think that that was a calvin film um anyway so i've spliced uh uh have a wonderful evening together and i think we got it um this is actually a technicolor film and i just think the film stock when i've run across the film that has it's a technicolor film it seems like it's a little bit more brittle um and it scratches because it's a thicker emulsion with lots of color depth and so it scratches easier and so you'll notice the fire department i'm gonna go around to the back of the house oh i was just going to bed when i saw the smoke sarah's calling the fire department the boy's room is up there on this side isn't it yeah let me go mr black [Music] [Music] get down the smoke isn't thicker the floor [Music] [Music] great dance line the children are asleep in the back room mrs barrel they'll be all right well i guess you got two calls i sent my girlfriend to the browns and mrs black here phoned as well but in the babysitter orientation course you said not to go into a burning building or wait in a burning building to call the fire department right you go to the nearest outside phone or street alarm box seems to me you did a good job instructing the boys billy tells me you told him to go out on the roof of the porch with his brother in case of fire and not to try to run through a burning house from what you said a few minutes ago chief we should all have escape routes figured out around our homes you're 100 correct that's one of the most important things we can do i was sure we'd never have anything like a fire you never think it can happen to you in the babysitter orientation course we're told there are hundreds of home fires every day you're supposed to close the bedroom door to keep smoke and hot gas out if you smell smoke or think there is a fire on the other side of the door don't try to open it until you have felt the door if it's hot to the touch don't try to open it at all if it's not hot open it carefully in case there is heavy smoke out there shut the door and take some other escape route where there is smoke crawl on your hands and knees heat and smoke rise air is nearly always pure and cooler near the floor more people are suffocated by smoke and hot gases that are ever burned and of course you don't ever leave small children home alone and don't go to sleep if there is a fire get them out first and fast don't wait to dress them just wrap them in blankets and get them all in one trip also if you think you smell smoke like you did evelyn it's safest to get the kids ready to go or take them to a neighbors so the smoke can be investigated it's really training for life or death situations when you think of it we all ought to have it the basic we missed is planning escape routes how do you get out of second story room safely chief well captain your children's room is ideal with windows opening on a low roof but where there's no porch or the like one solution may be a folding escape ladder pulling ladders have limitations of course you must be agile to use one and if there's smoke or flame coming from a lower window you must pass the ladder may not be usable but lacking a ladder you can hold the children at arm's length and drop in the ground or into shrubbery and there is very little chance of them being hurt after all it's only a drop of six or eight feet actually then when the children are safely taken care of you can hang by your hands and you'll find that that drop isn't nearly as bad as it looked when you were standing up i never knew there was so much to babysitting i think we can all begin to realize how important it is to have an accredited babysitter a girl like evelyn's in a pretty tough spot under these circumstances we're developing a city-wide and community babysitter program and anybody who takes care of small children should attend it i want to do it there are a number of times when i'm called on to sit with children i believe they mentioned something about this out at the base yes a good many military bases have programs like this and fire departments across the country have babysitting orientation programs well i think the next thing on our program is to get these girls home so they can get some sleep oh thank goodness everybody is all right [Music] all right um so here's a new uh leader lady or china girl or there's lots of different names for this but um these often appear before or after uh the film it's during the countdown uh and this is for uh the film labs to kind of make sure that they're hitting their color targets when they process film and there's lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of different ones and i don't know if you noticed like during the countdown at the beginning of the show i i have a real or i had like a short reel of a bunch of different types of leader ladies and leader lads leader dudes um all serving that purpose and this is a new one that i have not seen before so i'm gonna probably get a screenshot of this and send it off to um there's a couple of people that collect these i think north um northwest film folks do it i can't remember the names i'm very bad but uh if you look up leader lady or china girl on uh why is it called china girl i've never got a real answer for that but there you go um well thanks for bearing with me uh with the film uh splice is breaking i hope that it resolved itself in a way that was to your liking film communicators did a lot of fire safety films and i have ones made for people uh i have ones made for firefighters i have ones for first responders uh i also have ones for um ptas to guilt people into spending uh money and buying into building new schools that are fire safety it's called uh something called our obligation and it's a it's really intense it's an intense film where uh little kids die and i have not wanted to show that yet because i'm trying to offer a gentle uh time for your lunch one day maybe we'll get around to it um but we'll see uh in the meantime let's focus our efforts and our brains on lsd this is lsd [Music] peyote [Music] dmt [Music] stp masculine [Music] psilocybin [Music] hashish [Music] and marijuana that's right marijuana is also a psychedelic drug because lsd is so much more potent than the others about 300 times as potent as marijuana about 50 times as potent as stp about 130 times as potent as mescaline because so little is known about lsd let's talk about it first this is the head of a pin magnified 100 times what you see now is 200 micrograms of lsd that's the full dose to send a normal adult on an 8 to 12 hour trip more than enough to do the same for two to four teenagers there are some people who can have an lsd experience with only 25 to 35 micrograms we can barely see that with a naked eye [Music] this aspirin tablet it weighs 5 grams i worry to be made only of lsd there would be enough lsd for 165 000 people to take a real mind bending trip this much lsd would kill 20 people the lethal dose is 15 000 micrograms now that's one millionth of an ounce that's about what a particle of dust weighs hi i'm tommy rowe by now it must be obvious to you as it is to me that lsd is very powerful stuff and that's just what it is stuff it's not good it's not bad it's only a chemical a drug it's been around for about 20 years and people have been trying it for about the last five or six years there's some people who think that lsd is the greatest gift to mankind since tutti frutti ice cream but there are many others who feel that lsd is bad news to the individual and to the world he lives in for us to make our decisions we'll have to listen and understand both sides before we make up our minds while it would be very difficult to find people to tell you how good for your heroine is or speed or barbiturates it's very easy to find people who just can't wait to tell you how great lsd peyote dmt sdp mescaline and of course marijuana is i don't really dig dropping pills but you get the wildest highs on acid but the only way i think the only time i think i've been able to understand myself was on an acid trip then things were really clear i've taken lsd 42 times and it hasn't done me any harm why knock it some of our country's greatest minds drop acids they couldn't all be dummies but everyone says when you drop some acid the whole world becomes clear to you like an open book what if you you thought of it as a great adventure a great experience and you had someone with you for the whole trip i don't believe all that dumb stuff about chromosome damage we would have seen all them deform babies by now anyway that's basically what one side has to say in favor of lsd now let's hear what the other side has to say then we'll be able to make up our own minds let's hear from young people who've had their reasons for being down on lsd let's also hear from doctors psychologists and other experts who have tried lsd themselves who've had a great deal of experience with lsd and the people who have taken it but the only way the only time i think i've ever been able to understand myself was on an acid trip then things are really clear as a psychologist i have to tell you that the understanding you think you have gained just doesn't fit in with the facts here are the facts you've been on a number of trips and we're both agreed that you're having even more problems with your school your parents and even your friends perhaps what you think or feel on a trip just doesn't fit in with a straight world which you must return to and must learn to live in as far as understanding yourself is concerned the only real understanding you could gain would come from having a bummer and then analyzing it which would mean you'd have to want to try to have bummers and then attempt to understand them the way that psychologists analyze dreams which unless you are properly trained you cannot do by yourself [Music] i don't really dig dropping pills but you get the wildest trip on acid yeah but you can also get the wildest bummers and you can never really be sure which it's going to be but what do you mean nobody ever knows enough about the quality of the asset itself for their own hidden hang-ups that would make it to be a real trip for a real bummer yeah but you've dropped acid my search it was a real bummer enough to make me not to want to go on a fourth what if you were really cool when you did it this setting's just right you're not uptight or paranoid about getting busted what if you think of it as a great adventure a great experience and you have someone with you through the whole trip someone straight who hasn't had any acid well it could be a great experience and a great adventure if if you're really in the right frame of mind if you're sure about the dose in the cab if you could be absolutely certain there wouldn't be chromosome damage if you won't feel guilty about what your parents would think and if you're sure you couldn't get busted because it is against the law but how can you be sure that for the 8 to 16 hours the trip will take that your straight friend your babysitter will be reliable will stay with you and be able to handle any problems you might get into and not have a contact trip recurrence of his own just from watching you on yours lots of luck why not get some of our country's greatest minds drop assets they couldn't all be dummy who for example who's one of these great minds um uh you don't understand i keep explaining it but you don't understand lsd or masculine even if you just let it happen wow you find you can really love your fellow man even when you come down you can really love your fellow man no i don't agree with you i mean what kind of a person are you if you can only love your fellow man if you're taking drugs but lsd and masculine open your mind your feelings they make you feel you can just about love everybody but i always hear that laurie i mean i think kids would take a lot of acid let's have some really big hang-ups how can they be capable of loving anyone hey lori it's easy to say you love everybody but it's very hard to find just one person to love who says you can't love one person when you're on acid what is there to stop you i say you can't i mean it takes over 10 hours for an lsd trip right right so the kids that are involved in lsd don't have time for anything but themselves they don't have time for anybody whether it be just one person or everyone in their lives you guys are just not with it you belong back in the dark ages with the cavemen how do you expect to get on this world if you don't keep up with what's going on know what's wrong with the whole world but everyone says when you drop some acid the whole world becomes clear to you like an open book i've got news for you it would take more than lsd for me to understand what's wrong with the whole world or even our local politics honey you may think that you know things when you're up but you can't really know any more than you already knew before you took the lsd you may have feelings with lsd about what you know feelings you've never felt before but you could never know what you haven't learned yet evelyn i've been trying to tell you something but you never give me a chance i'm listening why don't you tell me what you're gonna say i've been thinking we should try smash it i hear it's a real cool trip sure sure and so is cocaine but where are we gonna find that kind of money besides if anyone finds out we'll be in a lot of trouble man like cocaine is a hard drug i'm talking about acid dummy lsd not cocaine don't tell me about acid i know too many kids around here that they tell me that they've been on bad trips on lsd they saw rats roaches in different sizes shapes and colors it was like a nightmare that stuff ain't for me no way [Music] but mrs andrade isn't it true that everybody's being uptight about those freaky chromosomes isn't it true that most scientists don't agree on chromosome breakage besides does it matter as long as i don't drop any acid while i'm pregnant if lsd won't kill my chromosomes the pollution in the air and water will so what's the difference the difference is we're talking about two different things we know that if we don't take lsd we won't damage your chromosomes all scientists know that it's too soon to know exactly what the damage will be especially to your children and your children's children but water and air pollution are killing us anyway well that could be but i don't agree that we should just sit back swallow some acid and say well man volition's gonna kill us anyway this time the whole country is worried about pollution and things are being done about it all the time how much are we doing about it if all we do is complain and swallow a drug not much better than bad people doing bad things about our water and air this world's in bad shape but it's the world that your generation is going to have to run in the next 10 to 30 years so what kind of preparation is lsd stp dmt piate mescalina marijuana for what you're going to have to do to straighten it out oh come on mescaline is a natural drug what could be wrong with someone this natural it's made out of cactus buttons or mushrooms or is that peyote well however it's made it's natural and you don't get chromosome damage from something that's natural maybe you don't get chromosome damage from masculine but are you sure there aren't any other kinds of damages like from a mental hang-up oh paula it never hurt the indians and they used it for thousands of years in their religious ceremonies sure i know but for how many ceremonies a year how many times a week and were their minds and bodies fully developed or were they still kids teenagers and do you know whether they would wander all over the place where they could get hurt or just sit there safe and stoned in their teepees and i'm sure they didn't have to cross 42nd street and broadway or sunset and vine when they were stoned of course not you know they led very simple lives that's the point it's much easier for one of us to develop a hang up on a drug like masculine like it can become a crutch there are too many people who just can't hack living in our very big and mixed up life you know a drug doesn't have to do damage to your chromosomes to do damage to you oh that's an old argument do you need a new one well you've seen two sides of the lsd psychedelic question but if you really think of it they've been about 20 sides to the question and we've had a chance to hear that many people speak their minds while it's possible that some things were left out we did hear from the most important and most strongly felt opinions about lsd now it's your turn now you have to decide based on what you have learned and what you already knew one is it worth the risk to your mind and body to drop acid for kicks or knowledge about yourself and the world you live in two are you sure you're the kind of person who will not get hung up on acid or won't go into other drugs and three can any of your personal problems be solved by lsd and last and not least will your dropping acid or other drugs do anything for
