so so so so so so so so so hello welcome everybody um i'm skip alzheimer and this is the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we just watched a film called the use of token rewards in experiments with the chimpanzee where we see that amazing mechanism that feeds treats um and you know there's there's a lot to extrapolate from this study i don't know the specifics the title was clipped on this um but uh fascinating nonetheless um so anyways we watch old 16 millimeter films and this one was actually uh broadcast live via the telecity that's behind me um where a telecenter basically converts film into a video signal which i then run uh and stream online uh basically to convert film you have to go from 24 frames a second or 18 frames a second or 16 frames a second to 29.97 frames per second for the video feed and then i run it through a digitizing box and then it goes through software called obs studio and then it gets piped via restream.io to you folks so lots of pipes lots of tubes um anyways uh let's learn about uh getting sick and getting well [Music] here comes michael who's going to be in a track meet michael's strong and good at sports [Music] he enjoys being healthy michael enjoys everything like the flowers and the trees and the fresh air an apple looks good i can't wait to eat it i like apples but there's something on that apple that michael can't see what can't i see i mean german i'm right here on this apple i'm so small you can't see me but i can make you sick i'm not afraid oh my oh my you shouldn't have eaten that without washing it or your hand you should always wash first you don't want bad germs inside you ah well if you could imagine yourself smaller than a dot then go inside your body you'd be able to see all kinds of things you didn't know were there smaller than a dot smaller than a dot going inside myself you're inside now this tunnel is like your blood vessels and these are your blood cells they go all through your body take a ride on one and you'll see i'm gonna catch a ride on one of those and see what happens who are you who goes there oh it's michael thought you were a germ that didn't belong here when we find things inside you that don't belong we get rid of them who are you we're special helpers we stop germs that get inside you when you don't wash your food or hands all for one and one for all we're the cells that keep germs away inside we're the helpers that try to keep you well when that germs get inside you we get rid of almost all outsiders yes sir but you can go on through thank you i'm glad you're here oh who's that i'm the germ that was on that apple what are you doing here get out how'd you get inside here easy i was on the apple you wait i'll make you sorry you let me in i'll be all over everywhere because you didn't take care i'll soon be everywhere inside i'll go all around i'll go until i made you sit from head to toe we make you sick we make you tired we make you feel so bad we make you sick we make you tired we make you feel so bad i don't feel bad you may think i'm very small soon you'll see how much trouble i can be we make you sick we make you tired we make you feel so bad oh i don't believe it get out get out i'll make you sick watch me where there was one of me soon will be two three and then an army of me as time goes i'll multiply now there are enough germs to really make michael six they started as one but now grows stronger each minute that passes you sick by make you tired we make you feel so bad we make you sick we make you tired [Music] germs they don't belong inside people let's go let's go yeah let's get those germs germs that make people we've got to hurry and stop those germs we've got to knock them out bad before they multiply and make michael sick yeah stop these calling all good self michael's good cells are doing their job and it looks like he's going to be all right [Music] but they'll have to stop them quick before they spread their poison and sometimes your good helpers need help then's the time to call your parents or teacher so they can get the doctor or nurse to help send for help michael get your parents get the doctor oh [Music] all right let's see where else we could spread to we'll strike here and here we'll spread through all of michael continue to spread our bad poison and he thought we were too small to hurt him [Music] oh i don't feel good and now that you're sick you better tell someone so you can get some help i don't want to be sick i have to be in a track meet this afternoon [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] we'll help you get well michael hmm you're not too sick it's good you got help before the bad germs made you feel worse [Music] [Applause] [Music] sometimes medicines can help the good helpers in your body with their fight against the bad germs [Music] most of the time our bodies can take care of bad germs all on their own we rest and take care of ourselves but sometimes we're given medicines but only when parents and doctors give them to you they know what kind and when and how much to take so that it can help your own helpers inside your body [Music] so remember to wash your hands before you eat and wash food too and if you do accidentally get some germs inside with the help of your special helpers you get healthy again your helpers work until most of the bad germs are gone [Music] then you feel good again and enjoy being strong and good at sports and enjoy singing and dancing and being healthy michael now knows to wash his hands and food because germs like the ones that made him sick are still around we almost had him but then he went to the doctor no fair well there'll be other boys and girls we can attack don't wash your hands and you don't wash your food you give us a chance to get inside you if you don't wash your hands and you don't wash your food you'll give us a chance to get inside you but if boys and girls do what they should and wash their hands and clean their food we're out of luck what can we do if you don't wash your hands and you don't wash your food you'll give us a chance to get inside you if you don't wash your hands then you don't wash your food you'll give us a chance to get inside you wow that was really great um and as some of you pointed out that's a great toe tapper um for 2022 to take on a found footage festival uh with a exciting song jingle and i should say that uh they're probably going to be eager to compete with us again because behind me is the spoils of our victory from 2021 um the of course uh clown pilgrim thanksgiving then they uh had someone um paint from the club which is an amazing uh cable access show that i turned them on to um anyways so yeah i'm glad you guys are thinking with your ears about uh potential candidates um i'll have to approach them at some point about like when we can do this um even though the term eskimo is not really accurate anymore this is still a pretty good film about living in alaska alaskan culture and inuit tribes uh and this is part of something that was in the 70s called friends it was a little short series not like what was in the 90s 2000s friends but uh this is something that ran on saturday mornings and was educational content that um was to offset all the insane advertising that kids were being exposed to so here's eskimo friends hi i'm julius jessup let's be friends [Music] i'm an eskimo i live in the northwestern part of the united states [Music] in the state of alaska this is my school we learn eskimo dances at school [Music] [Music] i live in kotzebue katsu view is located north of the arctic circle on the chuck cheese sea [Music] so [Music] we don't live in igloos we live in houses [Music] uh [Music] we fish for salmon we sell some of the fish [Music] we dry lots of the fish in the sun so we can eat it in the winter dried fish looks like this it's good dip concealer eskimos used to travel by dog team and sled today we travel by snowmobile in winter and motorcycle in summer [Music] uh [Music] [Music] so [Music] um i should have caught before i um switched over anyways um yeah that was part of a series and we've been watching uh those over the last year and a half um and uh it's great to see distant friends and i should say as an aside it's also great to see you uh distant friends uh and unfortunately due to uh the delta variant it looks like we'll have to keep being distant um because in spite of vaccination um people are still spreading it and there's a bunch of kids that aren't vaccinated and i don't want them to get sick so i'm not going to have live shows anytime soon which is unfortunate but i just want to reiterate the fact that i truly enjoy seeing your you guys your faces quote unquote um via comments and um and so let's just keep that going um and you know i got plenty of films so i'm excited to keep going um you know that's the the silver lining the golden lining to this dark cloud of uh of a global pandemic um this next film is uh something that maybe half of you or a percentage of you uh would have seen in school whereas the other half would have been in another room watching different film this is a film about uh menstruation which means that it's sponsored by a feminine hygiene product company this is julie's story enjoy [Music] oh i gotta i forgot that beginning is uh it's okay for you to sleep over friday night and we can have the television all to ourselves my sister's going on a date with marty what's up who's thomas is still gonna let you as a lead in the musical isn't she that's not it it doesn't have to do with tryouts well what is it then i got it my period i got it i have it right now what are you gonna do dude we've gotta get you out of here i didn't just get it i got it during trial you're kidding did it show how'd you know what you do does it hurt did anybody else know julie i can't believe you got it and try out come on i don't want the whole world to know don't make such a big deal but how did you know i don't know i was dancing around and it felt like like my leotard was uncomfortable so i went to the bathroom and there were some spots on my underwear did anyone else know i didn't even know till i looked so i put some tissues in my panties and i went to call my mom to pick me up why didn't you get a pad from the school nurse well i really should have too excited i guess hi julie you're feeling any better i'm okay miss thomas she got her period for the first time today does that mean that she won't be able to finish try out tracy julie there's nothing to worry about and i'm not going to lose one of my best dancers either this just means that you're becoming a young woman how long will this last why haven't i gotten mine julie's only 11. i'm 12. come over here girls i think we have a booklet that will answer most of your questions miss phyllis can i please have one of those booklets that just came in thank you julie is just going through a very natural phase of growing up called puberty having her period is just one of the most visible signs of what's happening to her what else is going to happen well there comes a time somewhere between the ages of 9 and 16 when your body begins to change your hips begin to take shape your breasts become more full and hair will begin to appear on parts of your body like under the arms and between the legs and the pubic area but what does that have to do with having your period well at the same time that these changes are happening on the outside of the body things are also happening inside you see there are two areas here in the brain the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland they produce the hormones that control the development of your body in our early years they concentrate on our body's growth and as i'm sure you've noticed growth is different among each of us right some of us grow tall some short some thin some heavy at some point in a young girl's life these areas send out messages to the reproductive system to begin to mature it is not always the same time for each girl but it will usually happen sometime between the ages of 9 and 16. here this diagram will show you what happens then all girls are born with a place for babies to grow in this diagram you can see that place called the uterus located here in the lower part of the abdomen the ovaries are two small glands located here close to the fallopian tubes which are connected to the uterus when a young girl reaches puberty the ovaries begin to release eggs or ova as they are called which have been stored in them since birth each month one egg is released by an ovary you usually can't feel it happen but after it's released it will travel along the fallopian tube into the uterus this takes about three days and as the egg travels along the tube the lining of the uterus grows thicker why so that if the egg gets fertilized which is the first step that happens when a woman is going to have a baby it will have a nice soft place to live while it grows how big are the eggs oh very small so small in fact that they can only be seen with powerful microscopes but look they're enlarged here so that we can see them but what does that have to do with my getting my period i'm not going to have a baby am i of course not honey you see when the egg isn't fertilized it dissolves and then the lining of the uterus is not needed so along with blood and fluids it is passed out of the body through the vagina that's called menstruation i know you girls call it your period but the medical term is menstruation this flow usually lasts from three to seven days and then the whole menstrual cycle begins over again so what the menstrual cycle all of life is made up of cycles and menstruation or the time when there is a flow of menstrual fluid is just a part of the complete cycle which allows women to have babies each time you have a period it is the beginning of a new menstrual cycle the flow of menstrual fluid usually only lasts a few days but the complete cycle takes approximately 28 days this will occur regularly until a woman is in her 50s but like all other stages of life it may be different for different women here let's look at this diagram it will give you a better idea of what is happening during each month each menstrual cycle begins with the flow of blood and fluids when they leave the body through the vagina is there a lot of blood and stuff no usually only a few ounces and that flows out very slowly over the period of three to seven days this time is called the menstrual phase when the flow stops the next phase begins that is when the lining of the uterus is thin and one of the ovaries is getting ready to release an egg when the egg is released that's called ovulation now the egg makes its trip through the fallopian tubes to the uterus and as you've learned if it has not been fertilized it dissolves and the lining of the uterus leaves the body through the vagina and we start the whole cycle over again well i feel like this every time i get my period probably not some women may have some pressure in the abdomen that feels like stomach cramps but many don't girls who are physically fit seem to have less problems than those who aren't so it is a good idea to get plenty of rest and exercise eat lots of fruits and vegetables meats fish eggs cereals you know all those foods that are good for you you mean i can still dance when i have my period of course you sure can i menstruate each month and i don't have any problems you can and you should continue to get normal exercise remember menstruation is a normal thing for a healthy female i won't be able to go swimming though when i get mine oh well that's not really true honey some women prefer not to but with the wide variety of feminine products that are available today it is possible to do just about anything that you want to do this isn't any big deal then is it no not in terms of something to worry about no but it is an important stage in your life you are becoming a young woman and that is a big deal thanks ms thomas i have to go now cause i called my mom to come and pick me up here why don't each of you take a booklet and if you need another one they're available in the school nurse's office okay i think it may help answer your questions bye-bye i see a rehearsal tomorrow julie this is an excellent booklet that miss thomas gave you yeah sure explain some things i didn't know i'm sure it does i'm sorry that we didn't have to talk sooner but i just didn't realize you're growing up so fast that's okay mom miss tom has told us it happens at different times for different girls i guess it just happened a little earlier to me well i did stop by the drugstore today before i picked you up and i bought samples of several of the products which are available to help you stay clean and comfortable during your period can i use what you use well perhaps you can but you should see what works best for you in fact you may want to use different products at different times during your period for instance i noticed here in this booklet that there's a calendar where you can keep a record of your periods see each month when your period starts you mark the day then you mark off each day that you menstruate although your periods will probably be irregular during the first one or two years you will eventually be able to see a pattern to how many days you menstruate and how many days there will be between periods then when you know your next period is coming you can wear these thin panty liners for a few days before to help prevent accidents this would have been good on a day like today when i got my period during tryouts wouldn't it sure now here we have a mini pad it is thinner than regular maxi pads but more absorbent than the panty liner many girls your age have very light periods and many pads are all they need these regular maxi pads are used on days when you have an average flow this mini pad looks thin enough so that it wouldn't show when i'm wearing leotards or shorts that's true but look even these highly absorbent pads called thin maxi pads are thin enough so that they won't show when you're wearing most of your sports clothes you mean something this thin is as good as the thicker one that's right but you'll probably want to use that super maxi pad on days when you have a particularly heavy flow or for overnight protection that's good news i wouldn't want to have an accident when i stayed overnight at tracy's friday night there have been lots of improvements in these products since i was your age we used to have belts to hold pads in place and they were hard to fasten and rather uncomfortable i wish we'd had these adhesive strips when i first started it would have made my life easier how do they work well you simply peel the tape off and attach the pad to your underwear like this then when you change pads you just pull it off what do you do with the used pad just roll it up like this wrap some tissue around it and put it in the waste basket or in the special containers you see in public restrooms can i just flush it not unless you want to pay the plumber to unstop the plumbing okay i get the message but what about a smell i mean will everybody know there is an odor which results when the discharge leaves the body and comes into contact with the air but no one will ever note if you change pads at least three to five times a day maybe more often if the flow is heavy where will i get the pads you can get extra pads from vending machines in public restrooms or at school you can always get one from the school nurse you should also bathe or shower every day you know like you're supposed to anyway what about the flow oh it's usually so light during bathing that it's not that much of a problem that's good i just died if i thought i smelled that are you sure that's all you're supposed to do that's all i'm sure i've been doing it for years you know mom what about tampon heard about them but i don't know how you use them well tampons are just a different kind of protection they are soft absorbance cylinders that are inserted into the vagina to absorb the flow and they are removed and disposed of in much the same manner as a pad tampons are worn by women during the active daytime hours but shouldn't be worn by anyone overnight i think for now though you'll probably be more comfortable wearing the absorbent pads on the outside of your body maybe i should use both i don't think you'll need to do that although some women do use tampons in combination with panty liners for extra protection remember there will only be a few ounces of blood and it will flow out very slowly when you get a little older you can see what suits you best well mom how did you learn about all this stuff did grandma tell you no i'm afraid not back then people didn't want to talk openly about things like menstruation why not if everyone says it's so perfectly normal it is normal but it has taken a long time for attitudes to change people used to believe that women were unclean at that time of the month or that they were sick or couldn't do some types of activity but as you've learned that just isn't true well i'm glad things are different i was really kind of scared oh honey if you ever feel that way again let's talk about it okay okay do you think cindy's had her period yet yeah she told me she told you well she had to i'd lend her my extra gym shorts and gym one day when she got her period and stained hers i bet gail has had hers come on can't we talk about something else for a change hey fast home marty's pulling away you just don't want to talk about it because you haven't had yours yet that's not true i know we're all different it happens at different times it doesn't bother me to wait i'll get mine sooner or later can you stop that with the wreath hey youtube what's the racket i could hear you when i got to my room how was your date with marty be quiet or i'll tell his cute little brother that you have a crush on him you wouldn't do that please i'm sure to look pretty tonight beth i hope allah is nice when i grow up when tracy tells me you're well on the way to growing up tracy it's only my sister it's nothing to be ashamed of julie it happens to every woman okay i guess it's all right for you to know but no one else hey kids it's really a wonderful time of your life it's a big step to becoming a woman beth did you feel any different when it happened to you no at least not at first it's a part of growing up not the end growing up doesn't happen all at once you know i do remember though that i thought everyone would start treating me like an adult when my period started but now that i'm 19 i realize i'm still growing up but did having your period mean a lot more problems for you what did having your period mean a lot more problems for you not really you do have to do some extra things because of it but you can still do what you've always done like sports and dancing hey i heard you're in this year's musical at school she's got the leave that's terrific that i hear that after you get your peers your hair gets oily you sweat a lot more get pimples and all that stuff is that true well yes when you reach puberty you probably will perspire more but it's not just because you're having your periods it's all part of growing up women are different from little girls in many ways you have to be more careful about keeping your hair clean bathing using deodorant all that stuff but it's just what it takes to look your best at all times beth does anyone ever know when you're having your period i mean is there a smell no not if you change pads often and bathe every day it's just a matter of keeping clean what about cramps didn't i see you in bed with the heating pad one day well sometimes girls do have some discomfort but there are a lot of ways to make yourself more comfortable like using a heating pad what a pain not really and after all it's worth it being a woman is something special especially these days we have a lot to look forward to like going to college getting a great job having a family meeting new friends the whole world is open to us and we're free to make the most of it okay you two i've got to get up early so let's call it a night what time you want me to set the alarm for don't set it but what if we oversleep who cares it's saturday that's true wait a minute maybe i should set the clock i mean okay that let's really bug her now what good night good night good night [Music] so basically almost every film uh made has the same it made they talk about menstruation have the same kind of structure lots of questions and an adult or an older sister addresses the issues and then there's some wonderful uh product placement and you know ultimately that you know this we call this a sponsored film but i mean this is really an ad for kimberly clark and their new freedom uh line of feminine hygiene products and the thinking is that so they would pass out information um they would have this film and the idea was that um you know if i guess from the manufacturer's standpoint is like if we can get the accurate information out there and we can get our brand out there then we have new potential customers uh especially if um and i don't know this for sure i haven't asked this is all anecdotal and this is me kind of thinking about this maybe the women can chime in um i'm thinking a lot of girls would probably use the product that um that their mom recommended like hopefully mothers or a female older female guardian would say well here's the product to use and then that might be the brand but in the case where um that wasn't a strong recommendation or um for whatever reason the mother didn't give that information to the daughter then you have this potential of like marketing you know here's the brand this is the brand you'll be using for the rest of your life um that's again all supposition i'm just kind of making that up but that's why these films exist and um again uh ladies if you want to chime in about like how you figured out what product you were going to use was a film the condenser or um was it a family or a friend that recommended the brand um it's kind of like cigarettes you know people use the cigarettes that their friends use or their family uses because they're just used to it okay speaking of sponsored films this one is about free enterprise and just if you figure out who it's sponsored by i can't remember if it says at the beginning but at the end it's like really that's who sponsored it so here's enterprise usa like all the other boys they were anxious to get home town memories the waterfall that would be lit with rainbows after spring showers the bridge whose planks rattled as you hurried to the swimming hole what fun that old swimming hole the peach pie on the back porch baked mothers can give a magic touch to any food and can make the beautiful even more beautiful memories the memories summer the scent of new moon hay was sweet scuffing bare toes through soft dust of sunny roads fish in the crick always seemed so big the ones that got away memories driving with your best girl beside you riding over the sun spangled roads beside fragrant orchards out over the rolling hills remember how our teacher brought the class to this waterfall to explain that was a story of enterprise so many other stories enterprise that fired imaginations enterprise under the american system could do almost anything our town had a bright history cotton the finest cotton the very finest cotton had made buchanan prosperous for almost a century acres and acres and acres of rich soil and willing hands gave the good earth tireless care it had been generous for generations the good earth it had been generous giving cotton rich and full across our land and after the cotton was picked precious loads precious loads the price of cotton was high bales of the finest cotton sold to the highest bidder from warehouses because of cotton buchanan half a century ago had become the county seat this county building was prove its prosperity but times have changed cotton can no longer be counted on the worked out soil is no longer rich in such soil cotton will not thrive the qualities pour the yield is small for those who farm cotton here these days the work is discouraging even the hardest toil brings but small return and other crops are not too plentiful because buchanan depended entirely on agriculture they were worried about buchanan on their travels they had seen what could happen to a farming town when the soil failed and hard times came and cattle felt the pinch of want this ominous sign and when trouble struck the ghost town trail was ghastly [Music] home had once been bright with paint and warm with life equipment left to rot left to rot in a ghost town ghost town skeletons crumbling away you can't dream prosperity into a town prosperity doesn't strike like lightning or come like a jump on a checkerboard you can't whittle prosperity out of soft wood santa claus doesn't bring it from the sky the federal government can't present prosperity as a gift there is no substitute for hard work and enterprise yes they were worried about buchanan there were signs of trouble ahead young folks were leaving our town to seek opportunity elsewhere there were no jobs for them here they had to go where they could find work every goodbye to these young folks was a sharp reminder to the rest of us so done something must be done rich machine remarkable ways operations were speeded up by lines of machine cost even the airplanes speeded up and cotton from fine soil benefited people everywhere but some cotton towns which could no longer count on the soil were prosperous why small town factories had brought industry small town industry had made jobs jobs paid steady wages wages brought new prosperity why couldn't buchanan attract industries no the wheels of industry had never been heard in our time industry say we built a plant here industry would come and prosperity build a plant and invite industry could we raise the money right here in buchanan why not why every man woman and well that's how it started these two boys made the first contribution and started out to raise the balance for 36 000 door to door on the streets [Music] savings from the bank for investment in what we called the future of buchanan slowly the total claim to buchanan the young folks could find work here wouldn't be going off slowly the total climb wherever a group was talking you could be sure it had to do with fundraising securities sold to raise money would we ever make it this is an investment for your children's future here now the goal was close the youngsters shook coins from their banks this prospect finally said yes in the barber shop and then some checks and i'll never forget the cheer that went up we had collected 36 000 a bank loan swelled the total we could start building when our town mayor dug the first shovel full of dirt congratulations were hardy yes the building that would rise here would bring prosperity to buchanan for years building lines were marked out deep in the red gorgeous soil the foundations would be set the hopes of our people were built in with the stones and mortar as the structure rose [Music] soon the roof would cover the plant and then spring the buds then the blossoms ripe with promise our hopes were bearing fruit bright as the blossoms the new plant sixteen thousand square feet the first plant buchanan ever had [Music] but wait we had a more difficult problem we could not lease the plant the company we had counted on said no we tried others letters that came all said no no no [Music] no the situation became desperate folks began to avoid the post office at mail time we got to fearing the mail the way we did when our boys were overseas if no letter came it was bad news and if a letter did come still bad news bad news bad news bad news we all had the mailbox jitters had any possibility been overlooked wasn't there a company somewhere that would lease the plant a company interested in people who really wanted to work this factory manager in the nearby town of bremen talked to his home office in new york about that new buchanan plant and about the enterprise of buchanan people would his company lease that plant a few days later he arrived with his company's decision our committee was anxious as it greeted him the fate of our town depended on that deceit we soon knew his company was interested it was especially interested in the enterprise of the people of buchanan the good news spread quickly housewives disgusted not the final details but rather what it would mean to the young folks now they wouldn't it wonderful news they had prayed for this the good news spread rural lines were busy good news spread school children yelled and did cartwheels the way kids do to celebrate the good news spread all through the county but wait the matter was far from settled the whole town of buchanan including children had only 504 souls can we guarantee that many workers let's find out a house to house canvas of available workers total began to mount all through the county we sought workers the total grew [Applause] every possibility was double checked friends were solicited a total group [Music] letters went out to our young folks who had left buchanan there might be jobs in buchanan would they come back would they come back [Music] would you come back we were over the top what a cheer when the figures were posted down by the courthouse in big cities where people are counted by hundreds of thousands folks wouldn't understand how hard it was to gather 200 workers our letter to the company was a simple statement but imagine the excitement behind it willing workers ready to prove that a company should invest in a buchanan plant the day that factory opened the flag flew on the village flagpole [Music] a trademark was bright on the factory the band came over from cedartown in their new uniforms shots of school kids were as thrilling as the band music cedartown was glad to send over his band to help a neighbor celebrate yes it was as if those kids knew what all this meant for the years ahead [Music] the workers entered the factory to take their places when you give work to folks who want to work when you give it to them right in the town they love well that's it isn't it local officials cut the tape throngs of well-wishers had a look at the modern well-equipped plant all day the flag flew happily on the village flagpole to be born under that flag what a privilege in all the world how few are born into freedom freedom is a precious heritage freedom is not something that just grows in a particular soil freedom requires care and constant vigilance we spray our orchards to kill off insects and whatever else would kill the fruit and the trees liberty is the fruit of constant vigilance for those who come after us we must protect that precious heritage which includes opportunity in the free enterprise system of our country [Music] well the new factory hummed with work i wondered what went on in there so one afternoon i dropped in to see the plant manager a buchanan boy proud of his plant but prouder of the workers he showed me around what they were making is not important to this story how they made it is important the care the thoroughness [Music] attention to detail machines seem to sing as they stitched away but the manager kept telling me machines are not as important as the people with a product like this there is no substitute for human skills the skill of hand the skill of eye and teamwork people working together are like threads in a fabric if any one thread is weak the piece is inferior no fabric can be better than its weakest thread teamwork i saw new employees being instructed friendly instruction and friendly learning teamwork and every detail is carefully inspected not just once but at every step this inspection double checks many others stitches buttons threads seams and so many other details that only the experienced eye could catch and testing the finest precision equipment that science can invent is constantly testing testing the strength of fabrics [Music] testing the strength of threads testing dozens of other testing machines each helping to maintain quality and but this is a story of people not machines people this worker is a war veteran a veteran who had been seriously wounded in action he came back to buchanan why not he had gone off to fight for buchanan when he came back there was a job for him in his own hometown thanks to the enterprise of buchanan people teamwork craftsmanship skills care sewing on the label never mind what the label is the stitches speak for all those folks who do part to turn out a quality article as long as they do that the plant will prosper and as it prospers buchanan will prosper that's the american way and how buchanan did prosper buchanan is back on the map prosperity is evident everywhere a broad new highway to atlanta 30 new homes and others building real estate values increased 30 in one year and a fine new hospital with modern equipment a model small town hospital courteous capable personnel as you see the courthouse begins to look better than it has in a long a time new fire truck [Music] latest model the finest equipment police chief has a new uniform a new car and an assistant chief and we have a brand new theater our first at our new restaurant southern fried chicken is the specialty 125 new accounts at our town bank the weekly payroll makes cash registers ring at busy stores in our shopping streets let's watch and out on the farms effects of prosperity are evident and this is alta vista our community of new homes inside these homes prosperity has brought so many nice things for a silver anniversary he wanted the latest model this banishes old-fashioned drudgery housework made easy comfort in comfortable surroundings yes our folks are shopping as americans like to shop they had a right to enjoy fruits of their enterprise to enrich their living with those things that enterprise is producing everywhere in america prosperity brought uniforms for the local team the coach is whit wyatt a buchanan boy who won fame in a world series remember whit is explaining the fine points of the game baseball is the american game whether on a sand lot like this or inside a big league stadium this is where whit wyatt was a world series hero americans cheer the american game the keynote of that game is enterprise be alert advantage of every opportunity make every pitch count teamwork obey the rules play the game whether in the big league stadium or on the sand lot the american game after 12 busy months the first anniversary of the new plant a celebration at the plant company officials from new york to pay tribute to the spirit of our people to their enterprise i salute you as fellow americans this simple comment of the prominent new york official was the keynote of our celebration the largest cake ever see buchanan and members of the clothing workers union were hostesses as employees and guests were served as part of the anniversary celebration silver dollars were used we wanted to learn how much of the weekly payroll was spent in buchanan and how many local purchases were made with the same dollars so on payday a bag of silver dollars was given to each employee and the silver dollars were traced to points of use of the silver dollars were spent in local stores [Music] many were deposited at the local bank for insurance and savings so that dear ones would be protected one day i went to the plant with a question about the company the manager pointed to pictures on the wall of his office this plant is one of seventeen there are over ten thousand employees yes mark on articles at all these plants yes the same policy at all the plants the company had grown through almost 100 years you could trace its growth in those pictures of 17 plants it started in troy new york the first plant was even smaller than our buchanan plant but it grew that map shows how many states have the 17 plants when you make a better quality product and sell it at a price which more and more people can afford to pay you must grow i'd i watched the day's work is done employees are leaving for their homes to enjoy what their work has provided when you give folks work in the town they love and make that work have a meaning well that's it yes that's buchanan down there in a small town you can get a better understanding of how enterprise works can't you that building on the left of the blue roof is the plant that the enterprise of my hometown people built sure but the same kind of enterprise built america and keeps america great in the small town or the big city the site of the big city was once rock bound coast dandy look at it now here's marvel at the greatness of our country asking why is america great the answer is liberty and remember it is here our lawmakers see to it that in the lot so tobacco company i mean it seems like arrow shirts would be so i don't okay there's so many questions about this um well one is it's it's missing the the head and is missing the tail so you know the can it said enterprise usa on it but it might not be what this film is um now that i think about it and so you notice it was really spicy at the beginning and spicy at the end well that comes from someone one not knowing how to thread the projector and running the film and it just kind of losing the loop and then tearing sprockets and then those whoever had the film cut those out and didn't repair the sprockets uh likewise somebody probably rewound it back through and it was clipped um you know the more i'm thinking about this the more i'm thinking maybe this isn't a tobacco company like and maybe this isn't even really enterprise usa maybe this is some other film because arrows shirt company is all throughout that and i don't see any indication about tobacco so that's why we watch these films why you have to watch them you can't just rely on um you know what comes up it's really fascinating but thanks for tuning in today um we'll be back tomorrow one o'clock we'll watch some more 16
