hello welcome i'm skip alzheimer welcome to our av geeks lunchtime streaming show i wasn't sure i was going to make it today um because as you saw um we were hello alzheimer welcome to our sorry i'm sure that's a feedback thing that's really annoying right now um so basically what i spent this morning doing with my assistant and my wife is we got this giant truck of uh from st louis that's my assistant uh k shawn um that's me with the pallet jack that you guys helped me buy because i saved some of the money that you gave me for coffee and um so we had 13 pallets each pallet had around 20 or so boxes and each box had at least 30 films in it and so what we had to do was the storage unit was actually downstairs um and so we had to offload the truck the 13 pallets then we had to go down that elevator that you see and it was very finicky elevator it's it could fit a pallet but not all those pallets were stacked neatly so there's a lot of overhang plus the elevator wanted to close its door any chance it got so uh very very frustrating uh the first attempt is a is uh it took multiple times and i kept going up and down floors just to try to get the the pallet off the elevator but we figured it out got it done in two hours so um after this uh streaming event i'm going to take uh take a nap because i'm beat but um yeah so the last film that we just saw is um kind of interesting it is a part of the stock library for coronet so basically it was a weird mixed bag of stuff i thought it was all going to be like oh this is peru no there was peru then it was like some maybe charleston west virginia then it was like some period piece where a kid kept picking his nose then it was a bunch of churches then it was over here there was a still image of abraham lincoln and so the only thing that i have is just there goes a can uh is this just this it says stock library can att there's no paper documentation uh hopefully we will dig it up we'll find some in a box but as it goes right now it's it's kind of like a magical mystery bag of stuff and there was no sound recorded so this was they would shoot stuff for a film and then they would keep all the extra stuff and they would reuse shots all the time uh for whatever educational film they were working on so um that's what you got to see uh i in this batch i pulled i took a couple of boxes home but i didn't take any that are actual prints what i took were the sock library and some original kodachrome uh a b roll so we'll watch a little bit of that unfortunately there's no sound but i'll give you some things to watch that have sound so you can sit back and enjoy your lunch so here's a gem handy film a safety film made for high school students or junior high students called take your choice [Music] in any average group of fellows in school there's always someone who feels he is far from average someone who feels he's different that's how it is with jeff carter he thinks he bears a charmed life jeff will admit that he's average in many ways he can miss a shot with the best or worst of them he spends about the average length of time in front of a mirror he has an average interest in girls one in particular patricia pat for short and he gives her an extraordinary amount of attention which is also average as jeff looks ahead across the years to come he figures that what happens to other people will also happen to him like the others he'll graduate like them he'll get a job like them someday maybe even get married [Music] but when it comes to the unpleasant things that could happen [Music] then jeff is somehow different he's not like the others he bears a charmed life pain suffering accidents as far as jeff is concerned those are things that happen to other people not to him [Music] well it's nice to be different or is it people like jeff don't have to think of the risks connected with what they do they can concentrate on the pleasant side like the sight of these dancing sparks if a fellow doesn't have to worry about danger he can get closer to his work he can look at the chips of brass that peel off the cylinder or the curls of steel that go shooting into space without being reminded constantly that those metal fragments are as sharp as they are shiny and those pretty sparks dancing off the tool are actually particles of hot steel they would sear the whites of any man's eyes except jeff's maybe [Music] a fellow who's immune to danger can be a lot more comfortable [Music] the rules in the chemistry laboratory call for safety glasses to be worn at all times at all times may sound kind of sweeping but how else can the eyes be protected it's obvious that safety glasses are needed while acid is being poured [Music] or while an experiment is being performed but how about the many times when nothing is being done that could conceivably harm oneself these times too call for eye protection because one's neighbor might do some unexpected thing that causes the acid or hot liquids to splatter but when a fellow is immune he doesn't even have to listen he just asks himself whatever could go wrong here [Music] jeff may have a point it looks as simple as mixing a malted and just about as dangerous but the safest things have a way of turning ugly because of carelessness and circumstance if the test tube is defective as once in a great while it might be it could shatter in the flame if the tube is okay but it's heated a bit carelessly the hot liquid could spurt and do damage who knows [Music] jeff look out [Music] [Applause] what happened what happened to jeff time seems to stand still at this moment nobody knows any of the answers and only the question remains what happened to jeff carter [Music] could it have been something that leads to this is this jeff's future is this where a fellow's luck and his eyesight finally run out is this where he realizes that a moment of carelessness can last a lifetime is this where it suddenly makes no sense to entrust two of the most precious things he has his eyes to a myth of immunity is this the choice jeff has made has he closed his eyes forever to all those things that add up to fun and excitement and make living more enjoyable [Music] [Applause] [Music] i [Music] is this world of color and action to be shut out forever is this the charmed life those are the questions how about the answer what did happen to jeff let's go back to the experiment and see jeff look out [Music] glasses wise guys [Music] [Applause] [Music] what really happened to jeff was fortunate he trusted in safety the very instant he could no longer trust in immunity [Music] plenty of others besides jeff have learned there's only one foolproof defense always to be ready for the unexpected [Music] imagine if the glasses had not been there to block the damage others besides jeff reached the conclusion that having the right skills and the right reflexes is not enough you also need the right protection against the one thing that never could go wrong but too often does molten steel left this signature imagine if the shield had not been there to block the damage it looks so cheerful but those sparks move with blinding force [Music] so it makes sense to let the goggles take the punishment not the eyes because of what happened to jeff the others in his school took a fresh look at themselves [Music] if the unexpected should happen again as it could at almost any time they'd be prepared because they'd be protected jeff proved pretty convincingly that acting as if you owned a charmed life could result in the loss of what charm you had glasses wise guy they made their choice each one of them cast a silent vote in favor of glasses at all times you might say the eyes had it how about you [Music] yeah um i was trying to figure out if that james handy film was sponsored by like ford or gm or coca-cola um i have another safety film that they did which was sponsored by coca-cola and there's some coca-cola stuff that shows up in it it's animated um but this one is by the detroit um blindness people um and i have quite a few films that deal with eye safety in workplace and lab environments and at least one of them is absolutely horrifying to watch although not as horrifying as a film that my friend um jay schwartz film collector who sometimes comes on this list uh we did a medical film symposium in philadelphia years ago probably like 10 years ago 11 years ago and um we were given a show like he and i as film collectors were like yeah let's show some stuff and he was like well how should we do it should we alternate should we and i knew his stuff was going to be absolutely horrifying and so i what i said is like hey this is what we'll do is we'll show my films first and we'll show they're all kids films about disease and germs and stuff like that and then you can show whatever you want so that worked out great because mine was like easy to watch you know nothing gory nothing horrifying his was absolutely outrageous um i can't stand watching eye surgery so there was a scene there was a film that he showed which was basically just eye surgery and i could not i just as soon as they kind of separated the eye i was like all right i turned around and i watched the audience watch it and people were shrieking in terror uh but the worst one was a film it was made for doctors about venereal disease and it was showing cases that were way bad and this was before really before they were using antibiotics or they were there were patients that didn't really have antibiotics that kind of came in looking like they did it was just and that was pretty horrifying i watched that but i was screaming the entire time and somebody in the audience got up and went to the like left because he was just like i don't feel good and passed out so i didn't make him pass out but uh yes so there you go there's your story um this next film is not anything related to safety at all um i'm trying to mix it up a little bit here uh i have so many films to choose from um this one is an amazing find i didn't find it until uh like much later in collecting and i got it i was like what is this um it's really a phenomenal film because it's almost like an ethnographic film about that's looking at this tribe and looking at their their rituals and you know their daily you know it's like an educational film but you'll see that it's it's crazy it's a very imaginative young adult who made this film and he made a couple of them and uh featuring uh these characters so here we go enjoy hank the cave peanut [Music] the guber family lives in a cave at the edge of a peanut village mrs guber rises early every morning she and her pet snake hunt peace for the family breakfast [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] hello [Music] [Applause] uh [Music] bye hank always gets up for breakfast with his family hank's mother cooks her peas and his father dishes them out after breakfast hank starts off for his job he is an apprentice canoe builder [Music] on his way to work hank passes through the village [Music] [Music] um [Music] [Applause] um the town council must decide how much to raise the taxes [Music] [Laughter] hank graduated from school last year this year he will be initiated into the tribe of peanuts in the initiation hank must lead a hunt to capture a wild fork forks are captured in the rough country far from the village it takes a long time to teach them how to help dig new caves the master canoe builder helped hank start this canoe a week ago it was important to choose the right [Music] tree um [Music] oh [Music] ready oh yeah [Music] hmm [Music] hmm [Music] after work hank does a chore to help his father mr guber is editor of the village newspaper you [Music] late every afternoon hank watches his favorite thing the fork tamers [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the day arrives for hank's initiation [Music] he is to lead the hunt to capture a wild fork [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] wow [Music] [Music] wow [Music] [Music] let's go [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] is it just me or that that that film's insane um the fact that you see uh hank uh making a birch canoe see this little peanut with an axe and you see the whole process of him making a canoe is it's just stunning um so much time on that that uh guy's hands um and he i think he's based he's based in uh massachusetts and he has much better versions of these films and he did too one of them is a peanut business a captain of a ship i think uh they're both available on amazon video um and so and they're much better quality than what i have here this is a very beat up print that obviously was shown a lot um but yeah i had no idea that such a thing existed um and was very excited to see it so that's one of the reasons you know i'm still actively collecting and still looking for stuff because i you know you find these gems that have just kind of fallen into obscurity and i'm sure that this was a favorite this was i got this from a school teacher in new york uh hudson valley um and he had him in his garage and he basically drove a bunch of them down and was like yeah this one's really popular all right well awesome um this next film features jay north uh narrating you don't see him in person but you see him narrating and uh talking about patriotism specifically the pledge of allegiance so jay north remember who that is dennis the menace on the tv show [Music] ready [Music] [Music] so so [Music] i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all [Music] [Music] [Music] me [Music] i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all so [Music] can stand one nation under god indivisible with liberty uh art evans uh did uh a couple of oxford films actually probably quite a few uh now that i think about it but he also did patriotism something i showed pretty early on featuring bob crane in person talking about what patriotism is and the fact that patriotism is love um all right so i'm going to show you another [Music] the these are boxes i literally just pulled off a palette as i was rushing back here to uh shower up and to change clothes and take some advil so i cannot do this show um so this is a kodachrome a b roll um it purports to be it says two reels so i'm not sure but i've already had a splice break and it's uh it's silent um and so this is original kodachrome shot of this film hygiene for girls there's no audio so we're gonna mute the audio so instead and one of the great things about this is this is like what they shot this is camera original stuff and even when you got like a beautiful color print um to show in a in a classroom setting um that's already been gone through a couple of generations of you know printing it to a negative and then you know doing this and back and forth so you're already losing this detail on this quality and this i gotta say this is pretty uh so and the thing is it's kind of annoying is it's like missing kind of sync information and since this is a roll it's possible that um we'll have what's in between which are called slugs and i'll talk more about this because since this is silent uh and it's also very possible a splice will break it already broke once so this is an adventure here we go um so right off the bat i can tell that uh those lockers are not made out of metal those are probably wooden lockers um that are props and you can often tell if you're paying attention to the coronet props um i'm typing in the name of the film as we as we talk um this is the a-roll uh and it's silent as i said um but you can see the paint dripping um i wish you could see my cursor i could point it out but here we go so i'm running there's no sound so i'm talking over uh the woman on the left the girl is uh was in more dates for k which i'm really hoping to find a decent copy of um so i'm transferring this on sd telecity but i'm really excited to be doing this on a higher res because the the details are just going to pop there's a school door oh oh boy oh that was crazy um yeah that's that didn't work there was a craziest place um that wasn't really a legitimate splice they shouldn't really have done uh a tape splice we're gonna i'm gonna run it a little bit longer and then if it breaks a couple more times then we'll i'll stop and show something else but um i did see some raw somebody said hygiene for girls on a slate maybe um good lord such stunning color and you know you can tell these cornet had like a sound stage i think they had it set up to where they could do two uh productions a week so they had like standard sets that were all lit really well and um you know so you had your classroom you had your hallway you had you know these other sets sometimes they would do location shoots i was told but you know they would pretty much do everything in their location in a suburb of uh chicago i know this is boring that you're not hearing you're not seeing me do this tapes plus but you know it's life all right let's see oh i see what's going on here all right yeah um gotta be very careful here there's yeah all right oh my goodness all right that's not gonna work um and i'll show you why in just a second um i gotta be careful now so um this has begun to to deal to vinegar um and because of that it's fascinating and i'll show you what that means you're going to learn a lot about film today whether you want to or not this is not all right so i'm gonna rewind this by hand i would probably put this on a split reel hindsight so i'm actually uh all right i'll i'll show you i'm going to show you another movie in the interim um here is uh coronet film hey what a surprise safe living at school enjoy election results for the junior safety council have been posted ted and ruth are pleased to find their names their experience on the council last year will be useful in their new jobs miss wilson the safety sponsor wants to discuss a plan of action with them first she wants them to look at a graph showing how effectively last year's council reduced accidents in the school building by helping the children learn to live together safely wouldn't it be splendid if this year's council could do as well or even better miss wilson's plan is for ted and ruth to start their work with an inspection to see what their school has done to make safe living possible and we're going with them with mr adams the school custodian as our guide we see first the fire extinguishers placed around the building each extinguisher has directions for use and an inspection tag showing it has been recharged within the past year fire extinguishers are inspected also by the local fire chief in various places throughout the school there are fire alarm boxes ruth wants to know how they work ted knows and he demonstrates do you know how to work the fire alarm boxes in your school besides fire extinguishers and alarm boxes the school provides fire hoses in an emergency the glass could be broken but mr adams unlocks the hose box in order to show ted and ruth how to turn on the water and how the fire hose is arranged so it can be pulled out quickly and easily of course fire protection is not the only kind of safety provided by the school the drinking fountains are safely constructed to reduce the danger of bumping your teeth while you're drinking and there are no sharp parts of the fountain sticking out in the way of people walking in the hall here's another safety feature the exit doors are equipped with special locks so they can be open from the inside just by pushing against the bar so we've seen some of the safety aids built into this school and mr adams wants ted and ruth to inspect the school often and tell him about any unsafe things they might find when ted and ruth tell miss wilson about their inspection she suggests that they make another inspection this time to find out what the children are doing to live safely in the safe school that is provided for them but first let's try to think of some rules that will help the children live safely ruth can use the rules keeping her record of the inspection certainly one rule is good housekeeping ted thinks there should be something about using tools correctly so ruth writes another safe living rule skillful and correct actions can you think of a third rule for safe living courtesy there those three rules should cover almost everything so now let's investigate how the children are living safely in school we can start in the hallway oh someone might slip in that spilled water let's see what the girl does about it that's good she wipes up the water right away don't you think that might be called good housekeeping ruth is keeping notes of what we observe but look here ted explains that everyone should keep to the right side of the hall just as automobiles do on the highway let's see now that sounds like courtesy there's a safe way to use the drinking fountain too see how this boy drinks without touching the fountain itself his mouth touches only the water that belongs under skillful and correct actions and see the line here waiting for the fountain everyone in the line is leaving plenty of room for the others wouldn't that make a good safety rule it's part of courtesy too at the stairway we learn a safety rule from a girl who changes her books to her left hand so her right hand will be free can you see why this goes under skillful and correct actions be ready to use the guard rail on the stairs now let's visit some of the classrooms here's a girl cutting pictures out of a magazine when she finishes yes she does put the scissors away in a box for their pencils and pen that makes a good rule that's good housekeeping don't you think but look at this boy's feet someone might trip over them ted suggests that it's just a matter of courtesy to keep your feet out of the aisle oh there goes a crayon well give him credit for picking it up before anyone can slip on it more good housekeeping safety for ruth to record in another classroom we find a group getting ready to do some construction work when they move the table they're careful to leave enough aisle space that no one will have trouble getting out of the room in an emergency let's call that skillful and correct actions and it's good housekeeping to close the drawer of the table now let's see if this boy knows the safe way to hold a nail here's a skillful and correct action that will help prevent smashed fingers fire drill everyone knows his part [Music] keep an orderly line teacher at the end close the door quiet quick careful blocked entrance that's using his head swing toward an unblocked entrance the lines move to a safe distance from the building and wait as the teachers call the role by knowing the rules and thinking quickly the students have emptied the building without mishap skillful and correct actions have made a successful fire drill from our investigations ted and ruth have made up a poster of safe living rules remember the school provides safety help such as equipment for fire protection this is on exit doors and fixtures designed to prevent accidents the students can live safely by following three rules first good housekeeping that means wiping up and cleaning up and putting things away especially sharp tools skillful and correct actions include such things as using tools correctly touching only the water at the drinking fountain knowing the rules and thinking for yourself the final rule is courtesy walking on the right side keeping your feet out of the aisle no pushing or crowding and so on these are the safe living rules that were adopted at one school they're just as important any school in you and now how many more rules can you add so um yeah i was going to show you why i decided to stop uh showing the that content so this was um this is original kodachrome it's okc i don't know what that actually stands for but it has a bunch of shots and so this is the original footage they shot for hygiene for girls so maybe some of this ended up in the film maybe some of it didn't so this isn't a b roll this is actually the original footage um and i don't know if you can see too is that weird warp and then you can see kind of light through the so this is this is very problematic um basically this is beginning to yeah it's got it it's got a vinegar smell to it as well um yeah don't do that actually supposedly you're supposed to do this so yeah that's i didn't do a good safety thing there with my nose um anyways uh yeah so this is you know beginning to decay and we can scan it uh we can this hasn't begun to shrink too much it's not curling it's just not lying flat so we can certainly scan this but we're going to have to put it on the bench and repack it and also because these are just shots they didn't splice them together really well they just kind of have these like masking tape splices so we're gonna have to go and clean up the splices and scan it there's no audio with this that would have been recorded separately um so this will be a lot of like outtakes and stuff um so this is fascinating i mean it's fascinating for people that are really into educational films you get to see some of the characters and you know the coronet set and all the you know the stuff that's not that great uh thank you melissa for uh donating coffee uh for us you could buy us coffee here um and uh thanks everybody for uh in the past uh donating enough coffee to get a t-shirt we've shipped out all but five shirts um and i'm working on those this weekend one of them is going to canada which is gonna you know that just takes extra whatever but um thank you for tuning in and thank you for your support uh basically the proceeds from the t-shirt sales paid for a pallet jack and paid for um rental on this new storage space and and all that stuff um and so thank you for supporting us uh what i will do probably uh next week on monday is i'll probably pull films uh they have a series of films they call library or insurance prints which are i think they're complete films but you know so we'll have complete films to watch and hopefully they haven't been ones that have been run through a projector like they will have been you know the colors might have faded but the they themselves might be in really good shape so um i'll probably end up showing those more because they have a payoff with narration and stuff and we don't have to constantly geek out about outtakes although if i find more of that stock library stuff um you never know i'm sure they the coronet people are like yeah we're not gonna use that footage of that kid picking his nose and constantly picking his nose at that but uh it's it's funny it's there uh it's pretty amazing so um thanks again everybody i hope you all have a really good weekend i'm giddy but i know that i'm gonna crash really hard very soon um but uh have a pleasant weekend you guys take care of yourself if you're feeling low realize you're not alone reach out to some folks um and don't be afraid to call people don't use social media to talk to people you should really like try to call people or see each other distant wise there's just something about that like social media is great for some things but really it's it's that personal touch where you're talking to people and you know spending that time and it's quiet and you're focused on each other you're not looking at your phone it's it's important it really helps heal and so my wife and i have been trying to do that with our friends so uh do that take care of yourself and we will see you on monday uh here's a final scene of um us loading into the storage unit enjoy so we didn't have enough space for 13 pallets we got nine in there so we had to break down four of the pallets and so i had to lift some boxes at the end just to make space it's not very well lit you can tell and these boxes are probably 20 years old if even that might maybe even older and some of them were really beat to hell so we're gonna have to probably re-box a lot of these we tried to be safe we were masks but um i'm gonna tune out and go to bed and deserve it i think thanks again everybody love you you
