Oh, those ants. So busy getting stuff done. Um I uh yeah, this is so this was from the Mogul Brothers collection. So, this was a film library in uh uh New York City where you could rent or purchase films and you could show them at home or at school or wherever. Anyways, I'm Skip Alzheimer and welcome to the AV Geeks Lunchtime streaming show where we show you films like this. Uh, and that was probably from the 30s and there was no sound. And the film, the original film was probably it could have been from the late 20s. Um, not quite sure, but uh, let's see. Uh, what do we got going on? So many things today. So many things. So behind me is uh a film scanner, the Sintel Blackmagic Sintel uh and which we have hooked up to a computer right there which is then hooked up via HDMI to a box over here and it's going into this computer. And so we're kind of streaming as we digitize. Um it's it's kind of wacky. Um and there's all sorts of problems, but uh I'm happy that we're able to do it and allows us to watch films we haven't seen before. So this next film is called Cashmere. And uh I want you to notice at the very beginning, uh there is what we call a leader lady, uh or a uh sometimes they used to be called China Girls or China dolls. I'm sure that's not how we're supposed to pronounce it, but um there's a one called Bear and the Hunter. Um, and I think there's one called Grey Gall the Hunter. And they are these um kind of non-narrative looks at different uh cultures hunting. Uh and uh man, that was that was beautiful. So nice. Um let's uh wow. I I think I might need some coffee. I don't know what's going on. Um, speaking of which, and I don't, it's because I don't think I slept really well last night. So, uh, this film's about your sleep and rest. Maybe I can learn something. Pick up some pointers while I make some more coffee. Uh, enjoy. [Music] A new campsite and perfect weather for a vacation. After their long drive, Kathy and Rob are ready to explore their new surroundings. They might even ask Dad if he will take them on a hike. But Rob had better do his work first. His camp job is collecting the firewood. Rob is anxious to finish so there'll be time for the hike. Every camper should know how to light a campfire, and Rob is glad to practice while his father watches. When a fire burns, it uses up fuel and leaves ashes. So, Rob will have to add more wood from time to time. How is the energy of a boy like the fuel of a fire? Rob remembers all the things he did today. Even the drive after lunch used some energy, although he was only sitting in the car. Then he helped dad put up the tent and went exploring with Kathy. This morning they played in the woods and helped get gas for the boat. He played catch and helped with the dishes and fished and went swimming and collected the firewood and made the fire. Now he's glad just to sit and watch the flames licking at the wood. He's tired. What makes you feel tired anyway? What happens when you rest? Where does your energy come from? To know the answers to these questions, you have to understand the changes that go on inside your body all the time. If you could look inside, you would find blood circulating through your body. As it circulates, the blood takes fuel or food from your digestive system and oxygen from your respiratory system. Your blood delivers fuel and oxygen to each body cell, giving nerve cells energy to pass on signals and giving muscle cells energy to move. And all of your body cells need nourishment for growing. Every time muscle cells burn up fuel for energy, wastes are left. What happens when your cells make wastes faster than your blood can carry them away? You feel tired. What happens to the wastes in your cells when you rest? You feel better when you rest. Your body cells can use their food for repair and growth. After a long day, it's natural to feel tired. It's natural to feel sleepy at bedtime. But Kathy is too interested in what's going on. Perhaps Kathy forgets how tired she is. But if you don't get enough rest, does your body work properly? Why do children need more sleep than adults? Having a regular time for going to bed is important. Comfortable pajamas, light, warm covers, and plenty of fresh air help you sleep well. When you are sleeping, your lungs breathe more slowly. Your heart beats more slowly. And the blood can carry food to your cells for growth and repair. Rob knows that the best way to get to sleep each night is to have good bedtime habits. A regular bedtime, light, warm covers, and fresh air. How will Rob's rest help his body after such a busy day? [Music] Sorry. Sorry. Um, I was rewinding and uh got caught up and trying to find another film. Hope it wasn't uh um Yeah. So I was So what I normally do is like I show a film and then go, you know, set up for the next film and if I'm rewinding something, then I try to rewind it. And uh that was a short film. That was shorter than we normally expect, but uh let's uh make up for it by watching a film about school bus safety. It's been a while since we've watched one, and uh I think it's time uh safety on the school bus. Enjoy. [Music] It sure is a beautiful morning. What a wonderful day to be a school bus. I'm glad to see you. My name's Homer. I'm glad you're riding with me today. You'll learn a lot about school bus safety. Did you know I'm designed and built for safety? I have a lot of safety features. I use these arrows to tell people when I'm going to make a turn and in which direction. When I'm slowing down to make a stop, I can flash these warning lights. And when I stop to pick up or let off passengers, I can put out my stop arm and halt all passing traffic. These are things that I use to keep you free from danger or harm. This is another one of my safety features, my driver, Tom. He's part of my safety team. I wouldn't go anywhere without him. Tom is responsible for obeying safety laws just like you're responsible for obeying safety rules. Every morning, rain or shine, before we leave the busyard, Tom is required to make a safety inspection. He has a long list of things he has to check. Turn signals, stop arm, horn, lights, emergency door. Everything must be working right. If not, it's in the garage for me until I get fixed. I feel safe with Tom because he's a good driver. Not only does Tom know me inside and out, but he's been specially trained to drive a school bus. Before anyone can be a school bus driver, a law requires them to spend many hours in a classroom learning about me and the rules that keep you and me safe. Then hours more are spent driving a bus, on the road, in training. A good rule to start your day is to always be on time at your bus stop. That's a rule that Tom and I live by. You see, our bus route and schedule of stops is carefully planned by our school. That's so no one will have to wait for me for long. And so everyone I pick up along my route will get to school on time. If I'm late, then everyone is late. Waiting for your school bus with friends and classmates can be fun, but a bus stop can be a dangerous place. In games, safety is often forgotten, and you can always be hurt by the unexpected. Older children should always look out for younger children. No matter what the reason, no one should ever go out into the street. When you see your bus coming, stay back from the curb until it has come to a complete stop. Only after your driver has opened the door and waved you aboard should you move toward the bus. Take your time. Don't rush. There'll be a seat for you. And help the little ones up the steps. Paul always waits until his little sister is safely aboard her school bus before he walks to high school. If you miss your bus, there's not much you can do to be safe. Return home. Maybe your parents can take you to school that day. Not all school bus safety rules are rules to prevent accidents or injuries. A few are simple rules of good manners, like keeping your feet off the seats, helping to keep the bus clean by not throwing trash on the floor, and remembering to take with you what belongs to you. And sometimes there's no rule to obey at all. There's just a sense of responsibility. Like today on the way to school when Sally told Tom that one of my lights wasn't flashing. That was thoughtful of Sally. It showed Tom that Sally was thinking safety. Tom wrote that information in his log book and before tomorrow morning he'll have my light fixed. The ride to school or home may not be a long ride, but if it's a safe ride, it's that much more fun. The time can be well spent talking with a friend, singing a song, solving a hard problem, just looking out the window. At school, there's no dillydallying about getting off the bus, but having arrived safely. We don't want an accident now. So, every morning we're met by a safety monitor who oversees our unloading and helps our smaller riders off the bus. As soon as our kids are off, Tom and I usually head back to the yard. But today is a special day. We've been invited to take part in our school bus's emergency evacuation drill. I get to be the classroom and Tom gets to be the teacher. By law, I have to carry emergency equipment. First aid kit, fire extinguisher, emergency reflectors. Tom and I hope that we never have an emergency, but we do have to be prepared for one, and so do the children and the teachers who ride with us. So, our school holds a school bus emergency evacuation drill twice a year. In an emergency, everyone has to stay calm and follow the instructions of the bus driver. Sometimes it's safe to stay on the bus and sit quietly, but sometimes it's important to get out of the bus by using the front door or the emergency door. It takes courage to jump from the bus to the ground. Our evacuation drill teaches our kids that in an emergency, if they had to, they could jump to safety. After school today, Tom is going to review six important safety rules. You see, some of our kids are riding with us this year for the very first time. They may not know these rules, while others may have forgotten a rule or two. All they need today is a reminder. A safety rule tells us how to behave, what action we should or should not take to keep us from hurting ourselves or others. This is the way the center aisle of the bus should always look. Empty, clear, all the way to the emergency door. You should never leave your books or belongings in the aisle because that creates a safety hazard. So Tom's first safety rule is this. Keep the aisle of the bus clear at all times. Here's a safety rule that's printed on the wall of the bus. This is called a safe line. This line is as far as it is safe to lower a window. Of course, it's never safe to put your hands or head out of a window or throw anything from the bus. Now, here's a simple rule. Don't play with the emergency door. If you have an emergency, you'll be glad no one did. When your bus comes to a railroad crossing, do you know what to do? You should sit quietly and listen for a train. That's what Tom does. He opens the door, looks both ways, and listens for a train. If it's all clear, it's safe to cross the tracks. By doing all that, Tom's obeying a safety law. And by being quiet, you're obeying a safety rule. I'm sure Sylvia will never forget rule number four, which is to sit quietly so you won't distract the driver. Not after what happened last week. It was just a joke, but in a moment it had gone beyond mere fun. It had become a serious disturbance. One Tom could not ignore. He wisely pulled to the curb and stopped the bus. It wasn't pleasant for Tom or the kids, but an important safety rule had been broken. Do you remember what it was? Tom's last rule is this. When the bus is moving, stay in your seat. Your driver may have to make a sudden stop or turn unexpectedly. You could be thrown down hard and hurt more than just your pride. [Music] Safety rules are designed to fit a given situation. Just up ahead, some of my kids have to cross a busy street to get home. There's no single safety rule for that, but rather a series of small rules, safety steps if you like, that add up to a safe crossing. Here's what you should do to cross a street safely. When your bus is stopped, get off and stay to the right. Walk to a point at least 10 ft in front of the bus and back from the curb. That way, you can see the traffic in both directions. Now, wait. Wait until your driver signals that the traffic has stopped and it's clear for you to cross. Then, cross the road promptly. You'll be home safe. Our journey is almost at its end. It's been nice having you ride with me today. I hope you remember those six important safety rules. One, keep the aisle clear at all times. Two, don't lower the window below the safe line and never put your hands or head out of the window. Three, don't play with the emergency door. Four, when you come to a railroad crossing, sit quietly so your driver can listen for a train. Five, sit quietly so you won't distract your driver. Six, when the bus is moving, stay in your seat. [Music] [Music] Now that you've learned the safety rules, does that keep you safe? No. Just knowing the safety rules doesn't keep you safe. Remember, safety is a way of thinking and acting. By learning these safety rules, you've learned to think about safety. But to act safely, you've got to obey these rules. It's obeying these rules. That's what keeps you safe. [Music] [Music] So, um yeah, uh having I didn't get my license until after high school. Uh so I rode the school bus almost every day uh of my um elementary and high school career and I would basically do homework on the bus. Um, and so I wasn't involved in shenanigans, although I witnessed so many shenanigans, so many violations of what we just saw. It was it was uh yeah, it was outrageous. Um, so that takes me back. So uh on the scanner behind me uh I have a film uh and we talk a lot about magic powders. We talk about powders that have magical properties. um cocaine, sugar. Um what else? What are some other powders? Um write in the comments. So this one is uh I'm not going to give you the entire title. It's uh the magic powder called dot dot dot. So let's find out together. Enjoy. So the uh the film was laying on something that was inhibiting the sprockets. So let's let's go a little back a little further. It's live, baby. It's live. [Music] Try it again. [Music] This tranquil pond was once a hole in the ground where giant machines dug deep for its bounty of stone. [Music] These gardens hide the scars of years past when a young industry impatiently grow drew its sustenance from the earth and moved on. [Music] The bed of this lake once stood dry, yielding an abundance of the special stone that held the seeds of bridges and highways, buildings and dams. [Music] Once they were quaries which supplied the raw materials of Portland cement. Now their treasures depleted. They have been returned to nature as part of a nationwide movement by the cement industry to reclaim and preserve our natural resources. [Music] Wooded tracks are set aside for public parks. And gamefish thrive where once the big shovels dug. And dig they must. For under the soil lie the rich deposits of limestone and marl, clay, sand, shale, and slate that are the primary material. fresh water and carries away the waste. It waters the crops, controls floods. Whatever their final shape, all of these familiar objects started out as a mixture of a few simple, inexpensive materials. Sand, crushed rock, and water, plus Portland cement, a man-made product. When mixed in the right proportions, it can be cast into any shape or form desired in construction. The mix begins to harden almost at once and when properly finished and cured becomes the stone-like mass we know as concrete. The key to this transformation is that fourth ingredient, Portland cement. Finer than the most expensive face powder, Portland cement is the critical substance that binds the elements of concrete together. It is manufactured under rigidly controlled conditions from some of the most common materials in the earth's crust. It is called Portland cement because the English brick layer who patented it in 1824 thought the concrete it produced resembled natural building stone found on the island of Portland. Portland cement therefore is a type of cement not a brand name. Virtually all cement used in construction in North America today is Portland cement. In a concrete mix composed of large and small aggregates, water and Portland cement, the remarkable binding power of cement is released when it reacts chemically with the water in a process called hydration. The cement and water combine to form a new compound called cement paste. This paste completely coats every stone and every grain of sand and fills the spaces between them. [Music] Within the paste, the union of water and cement particles creates new compounds which grow together and strongly interlock. These new substances, known collectively as hydrated cement, adhere to the surfaces of the sand grains and stones and fill the space originally occupied by the water. Soon the entire mass is bound together in a solid rock-like structure. So strong is the binding power of hydrated cement that concrete specimens tested in a compression machine break right through the rocks, not around them. [Music] [Music] This strength will increase even underwater for cement will continue to hydrate as long as moisture is present, strength, durability, workability. These and other distinctive qualities of concrete are due to the nature of Portland cement and its extremely fine structure. It is in the manufacturing process where coarse and common materials are reduced to a microscopic powder that these properties are real. energy. Some plants route hot exit gases from the burning stage to the crusher and a rotary drier when the raw materials have a high moisture content. From the primary crusher, the material usually travels to a secondary crusher, which further reduces it to a size generally not exceeding 3/4 of an inch. The crushed rock is then conveyed to storage areas where each material is stored separately. In the plant laboratory, the raw materials are analyzed to determine the right combination of limestone, shale, clay, iron, or other materials needed to produce Portland cement. They are automatically proportioned, blended, and conveyed to storage for the next critical stage of manufacturer, which is raw grinding or preparation of the materials for burning. In the massive grinding mills, the raw material is pulverized to a fine powder. This model of a roller mill shows how heavy wheeltype rollers crush the materials against a rotating table. Hot gases from the kill or clinker cooler sweep the fine particles out of a top discharge port to a dust collector or storage silo. Raw grinding can also be done in rotating ball and tube mills. Thousands of steel balls carried up the wall of the cylindrical mill tumble back onto the material and crush it to the finness needed for the burning process. As this model demonstrates, we have been following the raw materials through the dry process method of preparation. They now enter a long rotary kill for the conversion by fire to new mineral compounds. Cement plants use the dry process when the available raw materials have a low moisture content or other characteristics which favor dry processing. Some plants use a semi-dry process in which the raw mix is fed into a large rotating pan where water is added. The mixture forms into small dust-free pellets which pass through a preheater before entering the kill. [Music] Where raw materials have a high moisture content, cement plants generally use the wet process. Here, water is added to the materials at the grinding mills, producing a creamy mixture called slurry. [Music] After grinding, the slurry is sampled and pumped into blending and storage tanks. The mixture is stored in tanks under agitation until ready for the kill. The rotary kill is the heart of the cement making process. a long sloping steel furnace lined with fire brick and with a burner at the lower end. The raw mix in the form of powder, pellets or slurry is fed in at the upper end and underos chemical changes within the fiery chamber as it slides and tumbles its way toward the burner. First water and then carbon dioxide is driven off. In the hottest zone, calcium silicates, aluminants, and other compounds are formed that give Portland cement its binding ability and strength. In the hottest stages, the materials can reach a temperature of more than 2700° F or 1,400° C. [Music] When the heated material emerges from the kill in the form of red-hot marblesiz glass hard balls, it is a new product called clinker. To save energy, a number of plants are now preheating the raw mix before it enters the Kill. fuel lowered fire brick replacement costs [Music] through the use of these highly efficient preheater systems. Many cement plants have more than doubled their production output while dramatically reducing their fuel consumption per ton of cement. [Music] The cement industry is converting almost totally to coal as the principal kill fuel to further conserve natural gas and oil supplies [Music] in the central control room. All phases of production from raw material crushing to kill operation from cement storage to pollution control are monitored and automatically regulated. Computer systems keep operators instantly informed on demand about conditions throughout the plant. They also provide automatic process control and operating and alarm surveillance. After the clinker leaves the kill, it may pass through a long cooling chamber where big fans force cool air through the hot clinker as it is carried along on a traveling grate. The heat removed is ducted to the kill or preheater as combustion air. [Music] Or the cooler may be the planetary or satellite type where the red hot clinker falls into tubes mounted symmetrically on the kill shell. Cooling air enters through holes in the tubes, picks up heat from the clinker, and then is 100% utilized as combustion air. [Music] Pollution control devices in the form of electrostatic precipitators. Batteries of fabric bag filters or gravel beds remove particullet from exit gases before they enter the atmosphere. They are found throughout the plant wherever air pollution might occur. This strict control of emissions enable the cement plants to maintain high air quality standards. After the clinker is cooled, it may be removed to storage, shipped elsewhere for grinding, or passed directly to the final stage of cement making, finish grinding. Before final grinding, a small amount of gypsum is added to the clinker. The gypsum controls the setting and strength development properties of the cement. Here in the finished grinding mills, the clinker is ground to a super fine powder composed of micronsiz particles as small as 125,000th of an inch in diameter. Though they may use different raw materials, machines, and methods, cement plants produce Portland cement of consistently high quality no matter where and how it is made. This is because cement is manufactured to rigid specifications which are carefully adhered to by all manufacturers. [Music] The great majority of Canadian and American cement companies are members of the Portland Cement Association, established in 1916 as a nonprofit membersported organization to improve the quality of cement and extend its uses. At its headquarters in Skoi, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, the association operates one of the largest and most modern research and development centers in the world devoted to cement and concrete. In specially built and equipped laboratories, engineers, scientists, and technicians carry on basic and applied research for the benefit of the industry and the general public. They search for ways to improve the quality of cement and lower its cost to more efficiently control industrial pollution and to reduce the amount of fossil fuel and electric power consumed by the industry. [Music] There is continuing experimentation with low-grade fuels such as processed refues and industrial byproducts. [Music] Much time is spent on contract research projects for clients in private industry and government. These have included investigations of the seismic designs of buildings, long span bridge designs, [Music] concrete railroad ties, [Music] and the fire resistance of concrete structures. The insulating properties of concrete, which conserve energy by reducing heat loss, have also been widely studied. [Music] The Cement and Concrete Center is also a clearing house for the latest technical information on Portland cement and concrete. Engineers, writers, editors, artists, photographers, draftsmen, and computer specialists translate technical information into bulletins, manuals, data sheets, audiovisisual aids, and computer programs for public use. A wide range of professional training programs for allied industries is available as well as government supported vocational programs to train workers for the construction trades. The association also plans and coordinates cement plant safety programs. [Music] Scores of companies have received awards for outstanding longtime safety records, and every plant is proud of its continuing record of accident-free days. And finally, the association maintains field engineers throughout the United States and Canada who work with architects, consulting engineers, contractors, and public officials on problems involving the use of cement and concrete in construction. [Music] Um, so, um, yeah. So, this is interesting. So, it's a it's in a film can, but it's got a it's got a hinge on it. It's very strange to have a hinge. I think it's problematic, actually. Uh, and then it's got a latch on this side. So, I don't know if this was meant to be mailed and then you would like tape it down. I don't know. Anyways, there it is.
