[Music] so [Applause] [Music] hi darling hi how's it going see how long does it take to write a phd thesis it's a good question why do you ask simple i just want to know how long it'll be before i can tell everybody that my husband is now a professor at the rate i'm going you'll be old and gray by that time what's trouble well i'm just not getting anywhere that's all the beginning's all right but may i hear it sure let's see here we are first imagine yourself looking at a sunset most of the time we think of it as just a beautiful sight but scientifically there's a picture of something more it's a picture of audacity for performing work it can be peaceful one moment and the next it can be as wild and unharnessed as a raging storm our very survival has depended on our ability to harness convert and make use of nature's energy one of our early discoveries was to convert the energy latent in wood to provide heat to keep ourselves warm [Music] we found that the energy of falling water could be put to useful work [Music] and we discovered that moving air could help us in our fight for life we learned to use all these energies in planting and cultivation to provide us with food but despite the fact that man was learning to master nature's energies found himself a slave to back breaking toil today labor-saving machines on the farm have helped him master these energies [Music] and in our factories he uses thousands of tools to do his work this progress hasn't been slow and steady measured evenly over the centuries on the contrary within a scat hundred years man has taken his greatest strides for it was little over 100 years ago that a scientist named michael faraday discovered that the energy needed to move a magnet through a coil of wire could be changed to electrical energy [Music] even more important this energy could be transported by wires [Music] in the space of one man's lifetime a whole industry has been developed based on that simple principle the electrical industry that sounds good to me yes but where do i go from here the trouble is the electrical industry has become so complex that i'm not sure myself of how it all fits together can't these books help that's the point what i want to write about isn't in the book yet hey i've got an idea i ought to go see rey my uncle ray the one in pittsburgh yes he's been in the electrical industry for years will you be gone long i hope not when are you leaving i guess tomorrow i'll miss you hello oh hello peggy everything all right at home sure but guess who just arrived our favorite nephew hank hank what's he doing in town oh he hasn't told me yet but he wants to see you when are you coming home oh i can be there right away all right goodbye dear you see peg i've been working on my phd thesis in sociology but i haven't been able to get anywhere with it so i decided to come here i'm sure ray can help me sociology what's that well you see johnny in sociology you study groups of people and their functions in relation to all people huh oh i'll explain it to you later dear but if you all will excuse me now i'd better get dinner ready ray will be home any minute [Music] well that certainly was a wonderful dinner yeah peggy's a good cook much too good for me but say what's the matter with you you look like you've lost a little weight been working too hard yes i have huh i've been working on my phd thesis you see what i want to do is to study the relationship between the electrical industry and social progress you mean what the people in the electrical industry are doing for society as a whole exactly oh but i haven't been able to get anywhere with it well that's where you come in you've been a westinghouse engineer long enough to know something about it well what's your trouble my boy well for one thing the industry seems so diversified the more i read about westinghouse for instance the more i think that your company isn't every kind of business well in a way it is but actually each product we make is related to the other you might say that energy is our business say i have a drawing here that'll give you the whole picture of our work in a nutshell one of our artists made it for our educational center are you're going to be here a little while and this will be a good reference guide for you now once you understand this you'll begin to understand the work of the entire industry look here a minute now here you have it the natural forms of energy falling water oil coal their conversion to electrical energy in the power station and transportation by these wires to factories homes and farms where we need it and much of our electrical energy is produced by releasing the energy in coal and oil by burning and our company's work starts right at the beginning in the oil fields and in the coal mines [Music] in a coal mine for example electrically driven continuous mining equipment lightens man's burden of labor and increases his productivity many times after the coal is mined it's burned to get high pressure steam at the power station then we convert the heat energy of the steam into the mechanical energy of a spinning turbine how much do you remember about turbines and generators from your high school days hank well to tell you the truth practically nothing all i remember is that you put steam in one end and get electricity out of the other well come on i want to show you something here's a model i made for johnny now this turban and generator light that bulb over there do you imagine this compressed air is our steam it hits the blades of this fan our turbine when it starts turning it makes our generator go now the generator is nothing more than cause of wire rotating inside a magnetic field and here the electricity we generate is transported through these wires to light this bulb well that looks simple enough simple yeah give this a try yourself all right see that's a lot of work just to light that little bulb well then just imagine how much work is done in a modern power station huge installations like these house turbo generators that furnish power for over 75 000 homes about three quarters of our electric energy is produced by turbo generators some of them gigantic in size let's take a look at the inside of a turbine under construction our plants at philadelphia and pittsburgh have been making these since the turn of the century the turbine weighs hundreds of tons and is built to run at such constant speeds that your electric clock keeps accurate time year in and year out the rotor is constructed of hundreds of individual blades a turbine blade looks simple enough doesn't it but the precision needed to manufacture it is typical of all the work that goes into the construction of this equipment while this turbine is being constructed hundreds of miles away the generator part of the unit is being manufactured yet the turbine and the generator fit together perfectly precision is attained by careful design and by using specialized swim in some designs such as for the stator of a hydro generator the work is so big that it has to be made in three sections so that it can be transported to its destination yes the equipment that converts heat energy to electrical energy must be accurate efficient and strong enough to last for years and years i can see why you're so wrapped up in your work well you've only seen the beginning of it let's go back after that drawing ray recalled for me the fundamental principle of changing heat energy to electrical energy he explained the most significant fact about it is that it can be sent anywhere to perform useful work in factories in homes and farms to make sure that not much electrical energy is lost before it gets there it is set at high voltage this is done by using transformers lots of them the first transformers in a transmission system are right at the generating station they step up the voltage of the generators 10 times or more this gives a push to the electrical energy strong enough to send it through hundreds of miles of wire [Music] transformers like these are built at sharon pennsylvania incidentally the larger the transformer the less it cost to transmit energy that's why westinghouse has broken world's records several times in the past few years building larger and larger transformers [Music] the next day i was taken through the east pittsburgh plant where i saw them making equipment that controls and protects the flow of electric energy as it is sent from place to place equipment like lightning arresters that guard against the tremendous surges of lightning storms large oil circuit breakers taller than a house small oil circuit breakers that interrupt the flow of electric energy in case of short circuits and compressed air circuit breakers too then i saw disconnecting switches that determine the path of the energy through complicated transmission systems and other kinds of equipment that makes it possible to have uninterrupted electric service wherever we need then john amory the foreman had me meet some of the workers bill meet hank locking glad to know you mr larkin thank you how are you fine he's interested in what we're doing oh maybe he wants to see if we really do any work around here say uh what kind of an insulator is this this is for a high voltage transformer they're pretty important eh they sure are i'd like to see any power system work without insulators and they've got to be made so you can depend on them if they weren't i guess we'd be burning kerosene lamps in no time that's right come on i'd like to show you some of the other insulators we make okay nice meeting you bill well professor how are you making out oh fine i've met a lot of people directly connected with this energy business and i'm beginning to understand their point of view they're aware of the importance of the work they're doing and they're pretty proud of it the foreman name told me that he's been working there over 30 years well this may be part of the reason they see the results of their work right in their own plants where the electrically driven machines make their work easier and more productive now to come back to this drawing over here you can see how that kind of help comes through the transformers and distribution systems to all industry so that in almost every factory in the country electrical energy runs the drill presses grinders milling machines punch presses and boring machines in the steel industry electricity is used in the heating and processing of metals incidentally our company engineers developed synchronizers in the oil industry electric energy is put to work pumping and drilling and piping and cracking in the lumber industry [Music] this sparker fast smooth powerful is operated by one man thanks to modern sequence control in paper mills automatic drives powered electrically make a million tons of paper annually in the transportation industry electricity powers public conveyances safely and dependably in the shipping industry electric motors run all kinds of cranes and winches and drive giant ships [Music] [Applause] [Music] huge mortar-driven ventilating fans like these bring fresh air to our underground tunnel systems so that thousands of cars a day can drive safely under our rivers in the aircraft industry electrical systems form the heart of the control equipment for our modern transport planes [Music] motors for moving stairs in department stores carry people to and from their shopping and comfort and luxury in radio city westinghouse elevators travel 3 000 miles every day to carry 250 000 passengers our company serves not only industry but the home as well in our divisions that serve industry sales and engineering departments coordinate the planning of electrical systems for industrial plants office buildings and hospitals for the application of industrial equipment to specific jobs is just as important as this manufacture [Music] and as part of the company branch that manufactures products for their home our distributors and our television and appliance retailers are located in every major city in the united states as well as abroad for without effective advertising distribution and selling energy conversion equipment would never have come to its widespread use here boys try some of these they're fresh from the oven ah don't tempt me he's the one who's lost weight what are you doing tomorrow i've got something in mind for him i want to send him more to see mr johnson johnson who's he i thought you might round out your picture by talking to one of our managers mr larkin yes sit down won't you please thank you it's very nice of you to give me your time not at all i'm very glad to see you ray told me about this uh thesis of yours now i would like to get your general impression of all that you've seen among other things i discovered how every member of the company is linked with the job of converting energy and take a real interest in their work too that's right and did you know the tens of thousands of our employees feel that their work is important enough for them to own shares in the company is that so now is there anything particular that i could uh clear up for you well i guess you can you see it's been like putting the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle together and now i find i have a few pieces left over for instance how does the manufacture of jet engines fit in with your work that's a good question let me get back to some fundamentals the jet engine was made to meet a need in fact the company's work was founded on meeting the needs of the public and the nation as a whole now in order to find if we're qualified to meet these needs we're constantly guided by scientific research now in the case of the jet engine it's a cute little model isn't it yes it is you must remember that from our research on high-speed steam turbines it was a logical step to the jet problem you see turbo jets present a similar problem in the conversion of energy but they change the heat energy of burning fuel into not electrical energy this time but into mechanical energy strong enough to propel airplanes at tremendous speeds and so after a great deal of experimentation we made the first all-american designed and built jet engine and cigarette oh thank you see i thought of something else that might arouse your curiosity it's a plastic that we call micarta my carter it resists moisture and wear and corrosion it was found by our research laboratory when they were looking for a better electrical insulator and now mccarter's used for many things like for instance control cable pulleys using airplanes like those over on the table there let me show you you see uh these are the pulleys here very important in the control of a plane and this is micarta too it's used for burn proof tabletops now for instance uh you can do this with your cigarette go ahead whatever do you think you see and it's used for coffee tables and uh even on that shelf over in the corner there oh is is that an atomic power plant oh yes our studies in this field go back as far as 1937. for a long time we looked for a fuel to help us generate electric power far from the usual sources of coal oil and water well the atomic pile which is nothing more than a furnace heated by the continuous splitting of atomic particles seems to be the answer for the present it just replaces burning coal and it makes the steam which runs the turbine and the generator in the power station so you see jet engines my carter atomic energy like all our other work are still in the field of energy conversion now can you think of anything else where i could help you i don't think so you've been of great assistance i'll be sure to call on me now if i can be of any further aid will you thank you very much mr johnson say there's one thing more this might give you an idea for your thesis what you have seen how the organization works is typical of thousands of other companies all over america and it's living proof of what free people can do working together in a free society [Music] i think my visit with mr johnson helped round out my understanding of the industry come on this will make you feel better oh thanks honey hmm black coffee good almost finished yeah i'm just checking my last chapter i'm talking here about how the electrical industry has helped us overcome the everyday drudgery in homes and factories sounds interesting may i hear it sure you'll have to visualize the details but i point out here how in a period of 30 years the use of power tools has increased the number of leisure hours per worker by 27 hours per week and in the home not so long ago either mother had to bend over an old wooden wash tub for hours to do the family laundry while today's housewife has modern automatic laundry equipment that saves hours of labor and all she has to do is turn a dial her house cleaning is done easily and thoroughly in a matter of minutes a great improvement over the hours of back straining toil of grandma's time and how many times was food spoiled in the old-fashioned icebox because it couldn't stay fresh and free of bacteria [Music] in grandma's time food waste presented a serious problem for the family budget today food keeps fresh and tasty for days and how many winters is grand park carried in a heavy load of coal for the stove today you can merely set the controls on your electric leave the house and when you come back your dinner is ready [Music] getting rid of food waste was always a problem until we learned to use local energy to do the work for us this same energy now runs water heaters dishwashers writing by candlelight used to be a tedious and eye-straining effort but today incandescent and fluorescent lighting systems for every occasion then there's the whole field of scientific and medical improvements think of the slow tedious blind probing and guesswork of yesteryear and the diagnosis of many complex diseases that is gone today we have high-speed portable x-ray equipment developed specifically for mass chest examinations with floricon x-ray equipment doctors are able to see moving organs in the patient's body clearly and distinctly with it the dim light of the fluoroscope is increased more than 100 times so that the vital workings of the human body like the heart are disclosed in brighter and more revealing detail other bodily functions can also be studied more thoroughly ultraviolet and infrared lamps now give us the benefit of the hidden energies in sunlight when sunlight itself cannot meet our needs [Music] energy has been converted for our pleasure as well it brings the magic of sight and sound into our living room and recreates masterpieces of drama and music [Music] funny how we take a lot of those things for granted and that brings me to my final thought which should be something like this the material progress made possible by man's conversion of energy lies a great hope for social progress for is upon our struggle for freedom from the drudgery of bear survival upon our ability to create more time for education upon our capacity to create comfort and dispel the primitive fears that lie deep within us yet upon all these our hopes for the future man's road to social progress lies in such hopes better future for himself his children and his children's children [Music] here is an industry working to fulfill those hopes hello i know it's made for westinghouse by somebody and i just have to do some digging and try to figure out what's going on anyhow um thanks for showing up for lunch to watch some old 16 millimeter educational films i've got over 27 000 with potentially another couple thousand showing up um by the end of the summer uh they won't actually belong to me but i'll be digitizing them on behalf of coronet films uh as part of a deal that i struck up with them but i'll be making many of those available for you to watch uh and also they do phoenix films they do bfa a couple of other things uh speaking of coronet um this next film is about georgia's new suit so thanks to coronet for telling us about that enjoy [Music] george is in a hurry this morning and no wonder the mail carrier is arriving at the farm where he lives george just knew there would be a package for him a really big package [Music] what do you suppose is in that package in just a moment we'll see it's a new suit a new wool suit that will help him keep warm in winter and there are two new cotton shirts that will look neat and cool in the summer and there's a new necktie george is pleased with his new clothes but suddenly he wonders where did my suit come from where was it made what was it made of then george had an idea he'd go to see mctavish maybe mctavish could help him find out now who do you think mctavish could be a sheep this is george's very own pet sheep mctavish and he is being sheared today with all the other sheep in the spring the long heavy winter wool of the sheep is trimmed off but where does the wool go after it leaves mctavish george doesn't know but he thinks he knows how to find out he's going to write a letter then he'll fasten the letter to the wool from his sheep mctavish this is what the letter says dear friend this wool came from my pet sheep mctavish please write and tell me what happens to the wool and how it is made into clothing yours truly george moore isn't that a good letter well george hopes it is now let's go along with george's letter and see what happened first a railway train took the wool and george's letter to a woolen mill in massachusetts here at the mill a man named michael flaherty found george's letter and read it he decided he would answer george's letter and this is what he wrote dear george the wolf from your pet sheep came to the factory where i work the first thing we do with wool is inspect it and sort it then we wash it in big vans because the wool comes to us very dirty and greasy the tangly wool is combed and combed in a carting machine until it comes out all smooth and fine spinning machines twist and tug the wool and spin it out into yarn the yarn is dyed different colors on this weaving machine the yarn moves back and forth until there's a big roll of new woolen cloth this is the wool cloth we make in our mill but we only make cloth here so i will send your letter along with the cloth to the clothing factory your friend michael flaherty newton massachusetts so george's letter and the wool cloth arrived at a factory in new york city where wool clothing is made this is david rubin who found george's letter and he was kind enough to answer the letter too dear george my job is in a clothing factory in new york city i take the wool cloth and lay out a pattern on top for cutting then i cut out the pieces for many suits all at once with a special cutter there are many expert tailors here in the factory who sew the pieces together these people work very fast each of them making a different part of the suit some of the machines sew button holes and other sew on cuffs and sleeves so suits are finished ready to go to stores and be sold your friend dave rubin 1358 clermont street new york city new york city my but georgia suit came a long way but how do we find out about george's cotton shirts where does cotton come from and how does it become a shirt this time george writes to his uncle howard williams and this is how mr williams answers dear george we raise cotton on my farm down here in alabama cotton is a plant you know a plant that has big white bowls of cotton fiber and seeds in late summer we pick the cotton here on the farm the cotton is sent to a cotton gin where all the seeds are combed out after the cotton is combed and carded it is spun into thread in another factory the cotton thread is woven into bolts of cloth the clothing factory the cloth is cut and sewn into shirts and other things we wear and sent off across the country to stores everywhere yours truly uncle howard rfd1 centerville alabama so that's where george's shirts came from but now the cloth in the necktie is different from the wool in the suit or the cotton in george's shirts where does the nylon in the necktie come from nylon is a new kind of fiber made from chemicals here the chemical is squirted out through small holes to make soft strong synthetic textile fibers for neckties and for stockings and underwear and other things now mother has a beautiful silk dress george knows where silk comes from from japan where silkworms spin very fine threads and japanese workers weave the threads into silk cloth like the cloth and mother's dress george knows where leather for shoes comes from too skins from these cattle are sent to factories where the skins are tanned pieces just the right size are cut out and then sewn together to make shoes there are other kinds of shoes too shoes made of rubber to keep our feet dry in the rain and george knows that some rubber comes from rubber trees in the east indies sap is collected from these trees and used to make rubber so many people help us get our clothing people from all around the world george is proud of the letters he has received from some of these people and now when he goes to town it's twice as much fun looking in store windows because george knows where clothing comes from do you [Music] george learns where clothes come from good good for him um hey i just wanted to say a quick shout out thank you to folks who've been buying me coffee um coffee is what makes av geeks run it's not nylon it's not wool um probably would show these films if nobody was tuning in but it feels better to have people actually acknowledging that they're watching the film so thank you for that uh so somebody uh said hey what about driver's ed film this is not a gory driver's ed film but this is uh a great one nonetheless uh has some car crashes in it um part of that study that we saw um that we shows up periodically uh there's a company that use that footage a lot in in their films and so this is broken glass enjoy quote unquote enjoy this picture at only 25 miles per hour you're traveling through space at more than 36 feet a second the crash stops the car [Music] but you keep going smashing against the car's interior it wasn't until recent years that anyone knew what went on during the split second duration of an automobile collision one scientific approach to the problem was begun in 1947 when the state legislature established at the university of california the institute of transportation and traffic engineering one of whose tasks is to carry on collision engineering research the people of the institute have learned that the study of road accidents after they had happened failed to provide certain essential answers and so they developed controlled impact experiments cars guided by tracks drawn by tow cables to collide at predetermined speeds and at predetermined points are beginning to provide answers to some of the previously unanswered collision questions but the most important question has to do with human safety in a collision what happens to the occupants of the car when the experiments were begun this in itself posed a serious problem who would the occupants be [Music] here they are anthropometric dummies [Music] they're more practical than real people for this job because we can insert instruments in their heads chests hips and thighs to learn exactly what stresses strains and forces they will face in the secondary collision the collision inside the car where dummies are damaged and human motorists injured or killed [Music] the only effective means of ensuring that the motorist forward motion is [ __ ] is the safety seat belt or shoulder harness [Music] everyone will agree that good brakes are a necessity for any car safety seat belts and shoulder harnesses are really brakes for the riders but motorists who are otherwise careful often neglect something important the children to find out what happens to unrestrained children during collisions lifelike dolls just about the size and weight of three-year-olds are included as passengers [Music] other dolls simulating babies will also ride during various phases of the tests now everything is in readiness and what you're about to see will be a unique experience [Music] in these experiments you will see deliberate accidents exactly as they take place 20 miles an hour is considered a very moderate speed but here's what happens when two cars meet at 20 miles an hour [Music] in slow motion the adults with belts or harness reveal by their motions that strong forces are at work here [Music] while the child with no restraint is thrown forward by the impact and may be very seriously injured [Music] at 30 miles an hour you'd still consider yourself to be driving at a moderate speed but not through a blind intersection [Music] even though you have the right of way [Music] in slow motion photography the impact situation seems to last minutes instead of a second or less the leading instant during which most of the damage is done in all of the low-speed crashes the babies would have been injured to some extent and in some instances injuries would probably have been critical the unrestrained child's injuries in the words of the technical report were indicated as being critical to fatal for the little girls it could have been the preview to long weeks in the hospital or perhaps their last ride forever we've been talking about accidents occurring at what we might consider moderate speeds in today's driving even 40 miles an hour may seem moderate but a speed of 40 miles per hour through street intersections indicates a reckless disregard for safety and human life [Music] you cannot control the speed or the actions of the other driver and he may run that stoplight for stop sign at 40 miles per hour you're traveling at 59 feet a second and if suddenly you have only the stationary windshield or some other part of the car's interior to stop you the inside collision could easily be disastrous [Music] equally disastrous would be a collision with the pavement if you were thrown out of the car in the 40 miles per hour experiment no seat belts were used and this shows what happens when your car is stopped by a collision and you keep going [Music] [Music] [Music] at the conclusion of each experimental impact the long careful work of data analysis begins a medical doctor makes an anatomical diagnosis of the damage to each dummy for its suggested relation to human injury pattern it translates specific data but betsy is more of a poignant reminder that it's all particularly whenever young writers become traffic statistics at the tight notes are made and photographs taken of every detail including skid marks [Music] and even the minor debris of the carefully planned collision side impact collisions sudden and unhappen at any intersection they're among the most common types events and cause serious injury and death even when they happen at what we consider moderate speeds of us live in areas where there are corners and cross streets or and the largest percentage of all automobile accidents happen within 10 miles of home it's the same route we travel every day to work to school to market sometimes we cover the ground several times a day we're so used to it that we become inattentive we don't concentrate the way we should and even though we never go over 25 miles an hour we're in particular at the in urban at the end of each block do it doesn't pay to take him for granted tons of the side impact experiments that the one factor injury if we do become involved in a collision is the safety belt you could wear this precautionary device in all your driving for years and never need it then in one split second it could save your life or prevent horrible injury or disfigurement but the most infallible safety factor can't be built into the car unfortunately it cannot be purchased as an accessory anywhere because the most infallible safety factor is you yourself when you devote all of your attention to being a really skilled and careful driver on the streets and at the intersections around home [Music] or out on the open highway or the super highway [Music] whenever your car is in motion and control of the driving situation is in your hands [Music] so uh charles cahill films uses a lot of footage uh from that those tests um the footage of the doll flipping around is used in seat belt for susie uh and then some other film that we showed i can't remember the name of it but they they said got a gold mine here and they just kept using it again and again and again um for making driver side films all right this next film we showed frank and his dog um this features frank his dog and his family and a goat here's flying a kite [Music] flying a kite the day an old billy goat almost spoiled the fun mr billy goat is watching us as we drive up we have driven out for a picnic a picnic in the country [Music] mr billy goat must wonder who we are there is penny our little dog and there is frank i am getting something out of the car for frank probably you can guess what it is yes it's a kite a red kite for frank and his sister jean it is a sunny day a good day for a picnic here is a spot under a tree for our picnic lunch this will be fine says mother we have our lunch in the basket and a blanket to sit on but penny is running he sees something why it's mr billy goat and mr billy goat sees penny but penny look here is something else frank and gene are going to fly their kite all right frank go out there and gene will hold the kite everybody ready go frank runs with a kite penny runs beside him oh my frank has fallen now penny you shouldn't get in the way says frank so frank and gene will have to try once again are you ready ask gene already answers frank and away we go and up goes the kite it's flying frank says gene but something is the matter oh the string is tangled and look the kite is falling it's falling frank it's falling right into a tree oh my the kite has fallen into a tree maybe penny can reach it try to reach the kite penny but it's too high so gene and frank call me to help them will the kite be too high for me to reach there we are and it's as good as new so frank and gene can try once again be more careful this time frank says gene we don't want the kite to fall into a tree again so gene gets ready and frank gets ready and away we go again and up goes the kite high above the treetops and frank holds it by the string see how high it is flying look mother says gene look at the kite see how high the breeze has taken it but now it is time for lunch gene has an idea so frank ties the kite string to a stone good idea gene now the kite will fly all by itself yes it is flying very well now we can all have lunch penny is hungry too how about a biscuit penny what do you say what a fine picnic for penny and for everyone but look the kite is almost above the old billy goat will jean see the kite yes she does and look it's really falling what will frank do will the kite fall the billy goat sees it it is falling falling and down it goes oh my says frank penny penny come here but look now the billy goat steps right on the kite after the kite frank go with frank penny that's a good boy penny save the kite where good work the kite is saved thanks to brave little penny penny kept the old billy goat away while frank saved the kite kite had a narrow escape but it's safe again and penny what would you like another biscuit of course for penny has saved the day and what a day it has been what a lot of fun we have had and what a narrow escape the kite has had but now it's safe and sound again but listen to what old mr billy goat has to say [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you penny um so occasionally people are like what is the point of that phil they they ask they you know it's like what is that teaching um and my answer to that is that this is something that would be shown in language arts which is the precursor to english classes uh or english literature classes and so these would be shown to young children and it's a way to get them to think critically about what they're watching and to talk about it so you use this as a way to stimulate discussion and then eventually you do activities based on this so what you do is the kids watch it then the teacher says wow so what do you think about that and get the kids to talk about it then you get the kids to write about it you know write like a couple of sentences or draw a picture or you know do something to where their brain is processing what they're seeing and then you know it's a stimulus to get them excited it's provocative um and films in the 50s are like this you know more a little bit more commonplace with a little slight variation uh to make it interesting um in the 70s they go crazy and i've certainly shown some of those where it's just like what is the point of that that's insane uh late 60s early 70s so yeah uh this is a musical 1980s very 80s film about iron enjoy this message during the film they actually talk about baby formula as a way to uh nutritiously feed your baby uh when they're not breastfeeding so it's an ad for baby formula really and it's talking about like like look we know how to um feed your baby we know about nutrition we're showing you about nutrition we made it we're the experts in nutrition here's some baby formula for you um so it's definitely a sponsored film but uh it's pretty great uh this last film is it's called i wasn't scared and it's canadian and it's about bombs we've shown a couple of films about bombs and this is one about some uh almost like if his sister was not there to say like no that's dangerous no that's dangerous don't do that like it's almost like it's goading the brother on to to do this and to say no it's okay and just making up things like oh yeah you know it's it's it's a it would have gone off by now or you know it's the it's just phenomenal to see that um that's it off my soapbox um thanks everybody for
