wow i click away for a second and uh film ends that's the thing about uh silent footage is i don't get an audio cue uh what's going on but uh that is part of the coronet stock film library i'm slowly scanning a bunch of the cornet films that i got from the company that owns cornette now and so that's a lot of outtakes and extra footage that they shot that they would often use in newer productions and unfortunately i don't have any somewhere there's got to be a master key that says what each is on each reel but i haven't found it yet so maybe it's in one of the hundreds of boxes that i have in a storage unit um i'm hoping uh i got 14 pallets of films uh each each pallet had like 20 boxes on it and uh and i don't even know what's in the boxes so you know every every time we go and and bust out a new box it's new stuff to find so there you go uh i'm skip alzheimer and this is the av geeks lunchtime streaming show and it's interesting like every day depending on what the i'm even though i'm in a basement i have windows and those windows will sometimes affect the color and the lightness of my webcam and then i have to adjust appropriately when it doesn't so it's cool it's cold and gray outside it is a normal january here in raleigh north carolina and uh so i had to augment with some tweaking some white balance and color uh this next film we're actually going to watch on film is uh something i think i got on ebay years and years ago i haven't bought on ebay in quite a while uh is how to uh fight a fire in the kitchen that's not right it's not right at all um we'll come back to that hold on that's that's not right okay here's america in space then the day begins quietly for some it starts early in a federal agency that today marks its first five full years of accomplishment this is nasa the national aeronautics and space administration as the day begins at nasa headquarters in washington dawn comes to the capital canaveral nasa's launch operations center begins a new day at other nasa stations far to the west it is still night signals from satellites in space are being monitored for later study nasa's anniversary comes quietly yet these five years have been memorable exciting [Music] most americans can remember the rockets climbing into the sky with their cargos of instruments or of men and a nation's pride in its new achievements in space and the tribute offered to that new man the [Applause] astronaut they remember anxious moments too as search planes under the capsule returned from space what america achieved in those first five years of the civilian space program was done openly a nation dedicated to freedom of inquiry could not do otherwise these were the years americans learn new words liftoff syncop tyros fly by wire if our successes were spectacular so were the failures [Music] failure itself was studied closely patiently progress into space must come step by step nasa facilities like goddard space flight center came research scientists americans and visitors from other nations they saw programs that investigate fundamental physical phenomena an indication of nasa's increasing role in the advancement of basic knowledge from these centers across the nation nasa's space program is guided and directed in five years the world has been dotted with a network of tracking stations that monitor space probes unmanned satellites and our astronauts in orbit the status and position of every space vehicle and a massive other scientific data are transmitted from the tracking stations to control centers [Music] all of these facilities are staffed by engineers scientists and technicians already veterans of the space age [Music] from these ingredients of knowledge and skill of facilities and equipment of a guiding organization america's achievements in space have been created [Music] they began more than five years ago when america's first satellite explorer one rose from its launching pad it carried into orbit the means for performing an historic scientific experiment one that first revealed the earth's belt of radiation it has been followed by well over 100 spacecraft launched by the united states satellites and space probes on scientific missions are the vehicles for experiments by the earthbound investigator here is the space probe mariner 2 shortly before its 1962 launching on an historic flight to venus for 109 days mariner transmitted back to earth continuous data on conditions in space then at a distance of 36 million miles it sent back important data on the planet venus a record-breaking achievement one of the scientific satellites the orbiting solar observatory has provided precise information about the sun and the effect of its radiations on the upper atmosphere the satellites and the space probes have given man new tools to study the mysteries of the universe where before he could only wonder and speculate [Music] other satellites some of them closer to earth are solving practical problems in the field of communications [Music] first to go up was echo a giant balloon it provided a surface in space from which radio signals were reflected telstar privately financed and nasa launched and relay nasa's own satellite heralded a new era in global communication their first transmissions dramatize the future a permanent system of communication [Music] [Applause] satellites sincom a satellite that maintains an almost fixed position over the earth represents another approach here messages are received from sincom hanging 22 000 miles overhead the weather satellite tyros mounting two cameras and a television tape system returns photographs to earth on command tairo's photographs of cloud cover are valuable aids in discovering the growth of storms and in plotting basic weather patterns but no satellite however complex has the power of observation and understanding possessed by man himself there is no substitute for manned flight into space in the famous x-15 nasa continued a development in rocket-powered aircraft extending back over 15 years over a hundred times the x-15 has climbed above our atmosphere it was the first craft to demonstrate that man can fly into space control his flight during re-entry and select his landing point within a thousand feet project mercury the manned orbital space flight program selected seven pilots after intensive screening of many candidates skin diving was one part of an elaborate program to train them for flight into space and a safe return they studied the navigation the engineering the physical problems of space flight [Music] they learned the sheer ability of the human body to withstand high temperatures [Music] and experienced other punishing stresses of a journey out of this world [Music] even zero gravity that peculiar property of space flight was sampled in an aircraft flying a controlled arc finally the long program of training development and testing was complete opening the major phase of project mercury there were sub-orbital fights by astronauts shepard and grissom then in february 1962 john glenn rode this atlas rocket into space for a three-orbit flight around the earth project mercury moved into high gear [Music] within three months another successful flight was completed by astronaut scott carpenter then a sixth orbit flight by astronaut walter shahrar in may 1963 when gordon cooper returned to the earth after a flight of 22 orbits american space flight reached a state of high precision project mercury was completed but it was only a first step toward the goal that now lay ahead a voyage to the moon and return by 1970 it would be an historic achievement with immense practical consequences but the technical problems dwarfed those solved in project mercury demanding absolute precision in orbiting and new techniques for rendezvous docking and landing first comes project gemini unlike mercury two men will fly gemini in orbit for up to two weeks practicing space rendezvous and docking gemini capsules are now being built and tested apollo the three-man craft that will actually go to the moon is also undergoing a long period of test this is saturn first of the family of giant boosters that will lift man to the moon and beyond product of more than five years of intensive research and development saturn undergoes a major flight test on this day we moved at least one step closer to the moon visiting cape canaveral are the new astronauts the men who will join the original seven and ride the gemini and apollo spacecraft they are the new pioneers of space but their path has already been charted by those who have gone before for these first five years have been a sustained effort an effort that has broken through the first barriers to man's exploration of space because of this first giant step the cosmos opens itself to man's investigation what will he discover on these journeys already he has seen the earth as never before in his history and viewed parts of the universe with new clarity perhaps now he'll discover clues to the origin of life itself and through them a glimpse of its purpose and his own these five years have seen the first bold steps forward today experienced tested capable we look with confidence toward the future and our path to the stars so that came out in 1963 um have a soft spot for uh nasa having uh digitized some stuff for one of the nasa centers there are many uh each of them seems to run under their own um level of leadership and they act actually actively compete with each other which was by design and so at one point i was going to take on digitizing a lot of the nasa film and video but the funding did not uh come through and um which is i was very sad because it was gonna be probably five years of my life uh dedicated to it uh what we had discovered is johnson space center had a bunch of money they were the most well-funded of the space centers and they had already started digitizing their stuff some places like uh kennedy space center had not and in fact they had just a bunch of boxes of stuff lying around and uh warehouses getting wet um but i got to digitize a lot of interesting things mostly what i did was stuff that was uh educational that was made by um john glenn space center i can't remember what they were called before they were john glenn but uh and then also by uh langley space center in uh virginia um but yeah it was fascinating it was really really fascinating i went to nasa headquarters um got to meet a lot of people it was i'm really bummed that it didn't work out um but i'm also probably pretty happy because i would be in a different state i think at this point probably super broke a different path but uh anyways so i was gonna show you a film that was actually on uh my film transfer machine my telecini uh but a plug had fallen on the back of my computer so now it's back so here it is how to fight a fire in the kitchen [Music] every day millions of us face this danger it could be you [Music] would you know how to put out a fire if it started in your kitchen every woman uses heat in some form to prepare the daily meals and fire whether it be from electricity gas oil coal or wood can get out of control you're continuously working with combustible materials such as fats and grease and generally without any previous training in firefighting [Music] most of the fires involve hot fats and greases they catch fire they burn furiously actually kitchen fires need not be serious if you know how to handle them first thing to remember is never use one the best way to fight a grease fire in your kitchen is to smother it when frying with hot grease or in deep fat it's always wise to keep a cover and long handled fork nearby it takes only a moment to put the cover on and put the fire out it works no matter what kind of pan pot or dish is being used you're using a fundamental principle of fire fighting choking the fire by keeping out the air sometimes the hot fat spills over and the fire spreads outside the pan now you need more than just a pan cover you need an additional remedy just as simple just as effective it's baking soda plain baking soda yes it's very effective so effective that it's used in many fire extinguishers the soda upon becoming heated forms a blanket of carbon dioxide again you are smothering the fire it's a good idea to keep a box of this near the stove but remember it should be baking soda salt or flour should not be used broilers are a frequent source of fire they're caused by hot fats spattering from the meat to the flame drops of water in the fat or meat turn quickly to steam and seem to explode some broiler fires can be extinguished by turning off the gas and closing the broiler door if it doesn't work try the baking soda again there that does it of course the best thing of all to prevent a fire is to keep the broiler clean the soda is harmless and usually can be washed from the meat without leaving any bad taste sometimes you have to use whatever is handy a damp towel will easily put out a small fire like this electricity is another common cause of fire frayed cords and broken down insulation will cause a short circuit here's a good example and so is this someone left the iron on if this should happen to you disconnect the appliance immediately better still prevent these fires by inspecting all cords and appliances at least once a year get rid of damaged equipment throw away worn cords oil the motors and help prevent all fires in all cases if there is the slightest difficulty in putting out a fire call the fire department at once [Music] so this didn't really have a beginning didn't have an end and i think it was probably edited out of something else um which is the case with a lot of things on ebay a person will try to maximize their investment in a reel by pulling out the commercials or pulling out different segments and selling those individually uh which is unfortunate because then you don't you're kind of lost you don't know what the context of the uh the film is when it was shown why it was shown um and so i think i've tried to do some research to try to figure out like who made that when was it made all those things and it's hard it's very difficult to do so all right it is time to learn about our good friend hoppy the bunny [Music] one day in class we all gathered around to hear a story [Music] everyone was eager to hear it because it was a story about a little bunny [Music] once there was a little bunny he lived in the woods right here in this tree his name was hoppy my what a beautiful morning he said of course we all know that bunnies don't really talk but it's fun to pretend yes it was a beautiful morning such a beautiful morning that hoppy felt happy from the tip of his long ears to his funny wiggly nose right on down to his powder puff tail he was going to have fun today so off he went to see what he could find singing hop hop hop i'm a funny little bunny and it's so much fun to hop hop hop through the woods all day it was nice to have such big strong legs for hopping then he saw his neighbor mr raccoon good morning mr raccoon said hoppy good morning to you said mr raccoon would you like to share my breakfast with me no thank you said hoppy i'm busy busy doing what i'm going to look for places i've never seen before you'd better be careful you might get lost no i won't said hoppy yes you will no i won't well we'll see said mr raccoon and off he went hoppy hopped on through the woods then way up in an oak tree he saw mr owl of course mr owl was sleeping owls sleep during the day and hunt their food during the night hoppy was glad mr owl was asleep you see sometimes owls aren't friendly to bunnies so off hoppy went soon he came to his favorite little brook it was laughing and splashing in the sunlight this is so good thought hoppy it made him feel even happier than he had felt before on this beautiful morning and off he hopped singing hop hop hop i'm a funny little bunny and it's so much fun to hop hop hop through the woods all day but then he stopped do you know what he had done he had found a place he had never seen before he had hopped himself right out of the woods everything looked so strange he had never been out of the woods before but he smelled something good and decided to hop through the fence and see what it was now hoppy didn't know it but he was going to visit a farm for the first time in his life there was a garden on the farm that's what smelled so good the cabbage reminded hoppy that he hadn't eaten breakfast yet and he decided to eat some then he tasted the green carrot leaves these are good he said then he saw something that would finish his meal just right fresh green beans they were delicious when he had finished eating he decided to have a look around my he thought this is a very interesting place i wonder what else i'll find here hoppy wanted to run and play with the chickens but the rooster said no it was time for the chickens to eat the chickens invited hoppy to eat with them but he had already eaten breakfast so he said no thank you and hopped away to see what else there was to see soon hoppy found another fence what would he find inside pigs that's what he found but do you think they wanted to talk to hoppy no they were too busy eating hoppy said to them if you eat too much you'll get fat the pigs just laughed one white pig said you silly bunny pigs are supposed to be fat they're not very friendly thought hoppy all they want to do is eat so he hopped off to see what else there was to see and do you know what he saw white bunnies inside a fence why they look something like me he thought except i'm brown one of the bunnies came over to say good morning to hoppy good morning said hoppy do you live behind the fence oh yes we live in these nice houses the farmer built for us they are nice thought hoppy nicer than his hole in the tree trunk and look at the baby bunnies with their mother they're trying to learn to eat the way big bunnies do where do you get your food said hoppy well the farmers children bring us good things to eat every day no one brings me food said hoppy i have to find it myself i like it here said hoppy may i move in with you yes you certainly may said the white bunny oh good hoppy said come out and let's play tag oh no the bunny said we have to play here we can't leave hoppy said you mean if i lived here with you i wouldn't be able to play with my friends in the woods anymore that's right the bunny said what was that oh don't let that bother you it's just old rover the white bunny said the dog said hoppy a dog chased me once and almost caught me now i'm sure i wouldn't like it here i'm leaving what do you think of that afraid of old rover but hoppy was afraid and he'd forgotten where he came in and the dog was getting closer the garden gate now hoppy knew the way home finally hoppy was in the woods and the dog was far away when he came to the brook he felt safe hoppy knew he was almost home when he saw mr owl still sleeping in the oak tree mr raccoon said well did you find any place you'd never seen before did i said hoppy come over to my house and i'll tell you all about it mr raccoon said he'd do that later hop hop hop i'm a funny little bunny and it's so much fun to hop hop hop through the woods all day i've had such a wonderful time this morning hoppy said to himself but i learned a good lesson visiting new places is fun but there's nothing quite like being back home again [Music] that story was fun wasn't it the children in our class enjoyed it and now they've all drawn pictures of hoppy pictures that show different parts of the story what part of the story did you like best wouldn't you like to tell about it and wouldn't you like to draw some pictures too pictures about hoppy the bunny that little rhyme that little uh it's not a song a verse i don't know what you would call it um hop hop hop i'm a funny little bunny and i know um anyways uh happy to have a the color on that's not so great but the every other copy i have that is kind of beat to hell um so that was from the coronet collection um as part of their preview print something that they would lend out to a school to see if the school would say like are we interested in this particular title um so all right uh i got another film uh set up here and this is uh so i showed a film a couple of weeks ago maybe a couple months ago at this point called me and me had kid and his interactions with other bigger kids and it was kind of about his self-image and there was all these crazy marionettes flying around so this is called you uh it's also made by phoenix films um so i don't i don't know what this is i haven't seen this so here we go here's you dinosaur 1 this is dinosaur 2 over dinosaur 1 this is dinosaur 2 over you can't we're about to attack our headquarters headquarters hey cut it out and get down that tree leg the fire bursts out of branches oh we were flanked got this dinosaur we're playing somewhere else we were first now you went i was here first no you were i'm gone got a bathroom this is your last chance surrender or we will destroy you and your whole army we who's we your whole army just went to the bathroom you have five seconds before we move in your destruction will be complete one two three hey paul what'd you get what is that grapefuse did you drink it all i'm not you john well i want some get it you you're closer to it you're the one that wants it why you never ever do anything for me i'm not your brother on the enemy remember enemy is right bomb brother he can't play captain dinosaur all he can do is paint paint you know what i think of your painting what oh stink yeah i got that fatty skinny curly hair blubber long-haired toad hippopotamus elephant nose fat freckles garbage can pimply pinhead i was there with my brother you know who's the worst brother in the world y o u u [Music] [Music] ah why don't you ever pay anything good i am oh yeah where's the waterfall i don't see a waterfall if you see a weather fairy must be married poppin what were you shooting your guy at outside i was playing captain dinosaur what were you shooting your gun at the enemy oh yeah where's heavy i don't see an enemy if you see an enemy you must be married poppins well well that hamburger skinny hot dog i'd rather be skinny than fat you are fat toad joey you go away you're gonna get now okay go ahead i dare you does this stuff come off yeah how do you know comes off with water can i paint the rest of your face i don't know i'll let you do mine if i can do yours okay what are you gonna make i think i'll make emperor gargantua you'll need green oh ha he isn't greed he's blue no he isn't he's green with blue stripes ha ha he's blue with green stripes oh ha it's my painting anyway it's my face well they're gonna let me paint it or not go ahead anyway how can you tell which stripes are which they're all the same like on a zebra i can tell hold still how come peeing is so fun i don't know it just is how come you like to play captain dinosaur so much i don't know it's just fun okay my turn i think i'll make a devil how come painting is so fun i don't know it just is i only i haven't played only in school did you like it kinda how come you like to play captain dinosaur so much i told you it's just fun wanna play okay just a minute there go look in the glass hold it there [Music] cool hey i'll go get your gun so i needed my fangs anyway you've got to crawl you can't stop they'll see ya what do you see i see four guys dressed in black clothes and they're running around and around saying enchantments with skulls in their hands and they're wearing fiery red masks where over there behind the bushes and they capture the princess and they're dragging her into the cave where they bury her alive we're walking over there behind the waterfall [Music] [Applause] you and i are rushing huh [Music] [Music] i'm not doing so well myself i never knew you could play that dinosaur so well where's the princess in the waterfall oh you know i got wet going through that waterfall me too i guess i'll just lie here and dry off you didn't really see a waterfall did you do you like clouds yeah i see shapes there's a horse where oh i see it how come sometimes i see things that you don't and you see things that i don't i don't know i guess it's because we're two different people larry always sees things the same way i do that's his problem are you sure he sees everything the same way you do he says he does maybe he does that so you'll like him does it hurt your feelings when i call you fatty sometimes does it hurt your feelings while i call you skinny frankfurter not much a little you're not really skinny well you are kind of fat paul i am not i just got big bones how do you get big bones you buy them at the grocery store some people have them and some people don't usually the person's bones big enough to hold the person together that's all that i care about do you mind your freckles i used to how was it to have allergies i'm used to it but you had to stick all those shots i hate shots i'm used to those how come all the questions i don't know i just wonder what it would be like if i were you instead of me what i like being you it has its good days and it's bad days sometimes i wonder what it would be like if i were somebody else if i were skinny or if i were a different color or if i had different color eyes or couldn't see at all you couldn't see the clouds i could remember them well this is important but if you never could see it all you couldn't remember what you never saw i guess i could imagine them is that like seeing i guess so and then if i said the cloud reminded me of a horse no one could really argue with me because they've known i've never seen a horse either or they could laugh at you some people do now i guess sometimes i wonder what it would be like if i were tall or poor or rich or old especially very old if y'all bent over and sick and crafted and hate children grandma is an audience of her crotchety sick and hate children even when she doesn't feel well she still likes children well that's because she's grandma but what if you were grandma i wouldn't hate children how would you know i just know i wonder what it would be like if i'm a captain dinosaur and walk through a real waterfall yeah i see clouds me too you horse that's kinda like a pig sort of i always thought everybody saw things the same way they don't or even like to do the same thing no or even feel the same thing uh-uh well that isn't a bad thing no can you fix your painting i guess i'll paint over it can i help you yeah i guess i wouldn't want mary for a brother why not because he doesn't believe in cutting dinosaur at least you try i see [Music] i need to see who made me um just to see if there's a common uh common writer or director but uh those this is very 70s film those kind of sit and kind of kids talking um it's more esoteric it doesn't have a set uh like mission of what it's supposed to accomplish um but it's it's fascinating film nonetheless uh and i like stumbling across films like this because they aren't you know this was made by phoenix and distributed by centron but it definitely has kind of this meandering feel to it that you wouldn't see in a cornet or encyclopedia britannica film and even like a real centron film it's not gonna have i don't think would have that kind of just like yeah we're just gonna have these two brothers talking um and so this is the type of thing where i wonder was this film made specifically for educational market or was it made and then they were like okay now we're going to try to sell it to the educational market um yeah that's one of those things that i would if i could find the filmmaker i would i would ask and find out um my friend uh film professor friend uh marcia gordon actually interviewed the daughter and the producer of film uh of the so the daughter of the filmmaker joan micklin silver and the producer of fur coat club linda gottlieb who later went on to produce dirt dancing uh and asked about some of these questions asked about like was this film just gonna be made or was it made specifically for this educational market and linda said this was made for educational market so um my friend's working on an article and so hopefully when that comes out i'll have her back on we can talk about fur coat club more in depth um but yeah i'll leave it at that but uh thanks for joining me today very much appreciated nathan thank you so much for buying me coffee coffee is one of those
