Description: The protagonist of Sembene's satire is a half-westernized black businessman suddenly struck down by xala, a curse rendering him impotent. As he desperately seeks out witch-doctors and soothsayers for a cure, El Hadji's impotence becomes an allegory for African society and its dependence on white technology and bureaucratic structures.
