Contemporary artist David Hockney narrates this journey through a masterful 17th-century Chinese scroll by Wang Hui depicting an inspection tour by the Emperor of China in 1689. Hockney acts as a kind of tour guide unfolding the scroll's richly detailed panorama of 17th-century Chinese life. Drawing comparisons with a later scroll in which Western influences are apparent and a canvas by Canaletto, the artist offers a multi-layered discourse on the differences between Eastern and Western perception, the nature of space and narrative, and the metaphysical and ideological implications of the Western vanishing point perspective.
