Description: The purpose of this program is to present an assessment interview between Dr. Don Jackson and the members of the Hillcrest family. This is the first time that Dr. Jackson has met the family and he is unaware of their reason for seeking counseling services. In this presentation the family arrives for the interview and the father, Norman, introduces the members of the family. There are two children from Norman's previous marriage, one child from Carol's previous marriage, and one child from their marriage. Norman indicates that the reason they have sought help is because they are unable to deal effectively with Bruce, his son from the previous marriage. Dr. Jackson explores their method of dealing with the children and Carol indicates that she is having a problem adjusting to her role as mother to four children after only two years of marriage. She is unable to understand why Norman permits Bruce to act the way he does and feels he should "pulverize him." Norman then describes his reaction to her lack of discipline of his two children and feels that there are some things that are natural for children. Dr. Jackson tries to ascertain what interests the family has in common but this is met by excuses of Norman's long working hours and fatigue and the feelings that he has regarding spending any spare time with Carol. Dr. Jackson then tries to explore Bruce's feelings about his mother and Carol describes her earlier childhood when her mother walked out on her and her feelings about trying to be affectionate with the children. Since she is unable to be affectionate with them, she feels that their father should be and feels he is incapable of being demonstrative
