Description: The purpose of this program is to present an assessment interview between Dr. Murray Bowen and the members of the Hillcrest family in a family counseling series. This is the first time that Dr. Bowen has met the family and he is unaware of their reasons for seeking counseling services. In this presentation the Hillcrest family arrives for the assessment interview and Norman and Carol introduce themselves and their children. Bruce and Sonia are Norman's children from his first marriage, Lisa is Carol's child from her first marriage, and Brian is their child from this marriage of two and one half years. Norman describes problems with Bruce which have led to difficulties in this marriage. He describes the first marriage and his ex-wife's lack of concern about the home or the mothering of the children, and readily praises Carol's concern for all the children and the home environment which she has tried to create. However, he realizes that the children "get on her nerves" as well as his own. He has tried many ways to discipline Bruce for stealing but Carol doesn't see these efforts as effective. Carol then describes her own teen years when her mother deserted her and her father remarried. During this time she was made to feel like an outsider. She would like to be more of a mother to the children and would like a more active role outside the home. Both indicate that while things are better for them individually in this new marriage, problems, particularly with Bruce, are creating tension. They feel that things are improving in their counseling sessions with Dr. Peachey, their therapist
