Description: The purpose of this program is to present an assessment consultation between Drs. Murray Bowen and Ruth Peachey, the Hillcrest family therapist. In this presentation Dr. Bowen describes his reactions to the assessment interview with the family and to the family members. He is very explicit in his statement that while it is interesting to meet the children, he would not have them present in the counseling session. He notes that it is a very interesting and well motivated family. Carol, the mother, is seen as trying very hard to make things different for Norman's two older children but he feels that these two older children would prabably be better off if she was not quite so involved with them and feels that she is doing most of this as a result of guilt reflected from their father. He discusses with Dr. Peachey his impression that they have now become involved in a transference in their relationship with Dr. Peachey and Dr. Bowen describes how he deals with such transference in his own practice. In response to Dr. Peachey's question as to how he would treat this family, Dr. Bowen recommends that Dr. Peachey separate the couple in the counseling session and work with the one she feelswould make the most progress. The other partner would then be referred to another therapist. In this way he feeld they will be better able to work out their own problems
