Description: This portrait of Rosa Luxemburg traces the personal and public life of the leftist leader, popularly known as Red Rosa. Luxemburg was closely involved in the major movements of 20th-century radicalism, including the rise of socialism and labor unions, the 1905 Revolution, pacifist opposition to World War I, and the ill-fated German Spartacist uprising of 1918. Director Margarethe von Trotta captures this turbulent period in European history during which Rosa battles the reactionary establishment and the timidity of her political comrades, engages in stormy love affairs and suffers frequent incarcerations. The film concludes with her murder at the hands of right-wing German militarists. (Circulates)
