Description: Begins the chronicle in 1750 with the birth of Kunta Kinte in West Africa. Continues fifteen years later as Kunta and his friends are inducted into manhood, learning the skills of the Mandinka warrior. Shows the slaveship Lord Ligonier, its hold outfitted with wrist shackles, neck rings, and thumbscrews, nearing the African shore.
