Diegues fuses Afro-Brazilian folklore, history and traditional storytelling to present a historical saga concerning 17th-century Brazilain slaves who escaped to mountain strongholds and formed self-governing communities known as quilombos. The film chronicles the struggles of Palmares, the most famous of the Black Eldorados, which flourished for several decades under the reign of the legendary chieftain, Ganga Zumba. (Circulates)
