Description: To film this portrait of Kao Shu-lan, a welder and union official, and her entire family, Ivens and his crew spent long periods of time earning the trust of the family of three generations and the neighbors who share a courtyard. The film pinpoints aspects of individual lives affected by the Cultural Revolution, aspects which the filmmaker feel have had positive results--improved living conditions and increased equality in men's and women's roles.
