Edouard Manet

Examines the life, work and artistic philosophy of the French painter Edouard Manet (1832-83). Discusses Manet's role as "reluctant role model and artistic godfather" for the Impressionists. Pays particular attention to the fact that while he never exhibited with the impressionists, his widely accepted style paved the way for the later acceptance and success of Impressionism. Presents many examples of Manet's more famous and stylisticaly important pieces.
