Description: Surveys the life and work of Claude Monet, the first and last great Impressionist. His 1874 painting, "Impression: Sunrise," gave a name to a new style that emphasized the fleeting effects of light and color on nature and everyday scenes. Close-ups of his paintings show how dabs of paint are mixed not on his palette or even on the surface of the painting, but frequently in the eye of the beholder, making the act of looking a dynamic and often demanding experience. Concludes with works Monet painted while living in Giverny, including the monumental series of waterlilies intended as a memorial to those who had died in World War I.
