Sisters, or the balance of happiness

Efficient high-powered secretary Maria shares a comfortable apartment with her younger sister Anna, a dreamy, introspective biology student whom she supports and dominates. When the emotionally fragile Anna can no longer endure her dependency on Maria, she commits suicide. Subsequently, Maria befriends Miriam, a woman who works in her office, and begins to replicate the destructive pattern of her catastrophic sibling relationship. Von Trotta's intimate study of sibling and mother-daughter ties also explores the implications of post-war Germany's materialism. (Does not circulate).
