Description: This story of two brothers' coming-of-age is framed by black and white newsreel footage of Budapest in 1956 as Soviet forces crush the Hungarian uprising. In the film's introductory sequence, an Hungarian freedom fighter bids a frantic farewell to his family and escapes, just steps ahead of Russian tanks. Jumping ahead to 1963, the narrative eschews black and white for drab color as it measures the effect of Hungary's turbulent history on the man's teenage sons. Gabor, the elder and more conventional brother, is concerned that his father's past will prevent him from being accepted to medical school. Denes, on the other hand, finds escape in rock music, his adolescent anxieties mirroring the turmoil surrounding him. The boys' lives are further complicated by their father's return to what he hopes is a better society. (Does not circulate).
