Description: Bertucell's stark, documentary-like film, set in 1962 in an isolated Tunisian village on the edge of the Sahara, is the drama of a young woman unwilling to accept the subservient role that her people's ancient traditions demand. Her conflict parallels the community's awakening to the exploitive methods of an entrepreneur who has hired villagers to cut rock salt. When their wages are cut, the workers strike only to have the army suppress the rebellion. Amidst their struggle, the 19-year-old woman glimpses the possibility of life outside her remote birthplace.
