Description: Each year fishermen take 700 million tons of fish from the sea, but over-exploitation by modern super-trawling techniques is presenting a threat to the future of the fishing industry. Documents some of the work being done by the Fisheries Service to avert future disaster through knowledge of the ocean's ecosystem and how it is affected by man and by nature. Charts and diagrams illustrate conditions that make certain areas highly productive, relating directly to the supplies of the various links of the food chain. Some fisheries are now using computers to plot where the fish come from and how to protect the supply. Technology has also turned to fish farming, but it is often an expensive process. Concludes that only careful regulation of fishing today will insure a future food supply from the seas.
