Description: Shows how modern engineering technology is now being used to perform structural analyses of ancient buildings and uses computer simulations to analyze one of the wonders of the ancient world--the colossal dome of the Pantheon, built in 100 A.D. by the Romans. Shows the effect of various stresses, such as the immense weight of the dome itself, and reveals how rings around the edge of the dome succeed in reducing such stress-induced strain. In contrast, modern architecture sometimes emphasizes architectural theory and aesthetics over structural considerations. Examination of ancient and modern buildings reveals how the interaction of structural and aesthetic considerations have influenced the style of architecture through the ages.
