. President Wilson's idealism combined with the more compromising nature of his assistant, diplomatic aide Colonel Edward House, to create a situation well suited to the exploitive minds of Europes's Realpolitik knowing how much Wilson wanted the League, the leaders of Europe made it to the condition of their bargaining for a punitive "divide-the Spoils" settlement which violated, in principle, the philosopy of having any league at all, and laid the foundation of the second world war.
