Description: The recognition of Russia was mixed in its motivation and in its results. Western powers had gained the reputation of interfering in Russian affairs, having helped ferment the Russian Civil War of 1918-1920. The United States, in recognizing Russia, was moved by the fact that it was the last of the powers to do so, by fear of the Japanese, and by economic interests in Russia as a potential market. That the result was little more than an armed truce is not surprising.
