Description: Examines several theories proposed to explain the causes of earthquakes and considers the feasibility of suggested methods for "defusing" potential earthquakes. Observes that nearly all earthquakes occur at the boundaries of the plates making up the earth's outer shell and shows scientists in the Middle East plotting positions of previous earthquakes to determine the direction these plates are moving. Records scientists on the drilling ship Glomar Challenger attempting to find the age of the ocean floor at various points in order to test a theory suggesting movement between the Pacific plate and the North American plate.
