Teaching Film Custodians abridged classroom version of a Cavalcade of America television series episode, "Sunset at Appomattox" (season 2, episode 4) which originally aired October 20th, 1953 on ABC-TV. Recounts the events leading up to the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, signaling the beginning of the end of the U.S. Civil War. Based on detailed accounts of fourteen eye-witnesses, this film also depicts General Robert E. Lee's surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865. This meeting of Lee and Grant is completely recreated and shows that the surrender was accepted "with magnanimity on Grant's part, and with dignity on Lee's.", Describes the events at the end of the Civil War, climaxing with General Robert E.
