This film illustrates the scientific methods by which John J. Montgomery, a little-known west coast aviation pioneer, planned, constructed, and tested the tandem-wing glider, culminating in the April, 1905 public demonstration of the Montgomery Aeroplane, rechristened as The Santa Clara (in honor of Santa Clara College). Released from an unmanned hot-air smoke balloon at an altitude of 4,000 feet above Santa Clara College, the glider, piloted by Montgomery's associate Daniel Maloney, performed a series of pre-determined maneuvers and made a soft landing near the college grounds.
