Description: Adapts the short story of the same title by Ambrose Bierce which explores the effect of war on human character and behavior. Opens with the capture of Parker Adderson, a Yankee spy, whose flippant comments on his impending execution seem to mock the Confederate general's somber respect for death. Contrasts the different perspectives on war: Adderson's cynicism about soldiers who are ordered into battle; the general's enjoyment of power that brings him little personal discomfort or anger; and a young lieutenant's idealistic belief in duty. Brings these beliefs into conflict as the general flaunts tradition and moves to execute Adderson at midnight. Presents the final climactic clash as the immediacy of death strips away Adderson's mask of fatalistic indifference.
