Adapts the short story of the same title by Richard Wright about David, a black teenaged farm worker in the Deep South during the late 1930s. Dramatizes David's struggle for identity as a man as he persuades his mother to let him buy a gun, accidently kills a mule, suffers humiliation from his father and landlord, and hops a passing train with hopes of a new life. Features LaVar Burton as David.
