In this excerpt from The Human Comedy, Homer has an argument with a rich boy, and they are kept after school. The teacher explains that people are important for what they do, not who they are, but the track coach intervenes for the rich boy, who is entered in a track meet that afternoon. Homer, urged on by the teacher, goes in to win the race and proves that the rich boy has no head start.
