A circus troupe passing through a provincial town becomes a study in frustrated ambition and sexual humiliation. Albert, the ringmaster, is rejected by his wife and subjected to the jealous rages of his mistress Anne. Bergman's preoccupations with the artist's isolation and the wounds inflicted by sexual interplay are here revealed in complex imagery ranging from the overexposed pallor of the silent flashback to the expressionistic compositions of the theatre scenes.
